Re: [MBZ] Rear seal/yes it is tough to replace
Mobil 1 was magic on the rear main seal on my Dodge Dakota. It was leaking pretty bad too, a quart in 500 miles maybe worse. Now 5 years later its more like a quart in 3500 miles. I can live with that. 190D is up to a quart in 2500 miles. Thank goodness I was starting to worry about my track record with Mobil 1... -Curt Date: Wed, 29 Aug 2007 21:34:22 EDT From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MBZ] Rear seal/yes it is tough to replace To: mercedes@okiebenz.com Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Jim is correct, as I recall, it is like three nails sticking up into the seal that hold it from turning, The crankshaft must be lifted away from the seal to remove/install it. In my younger days, I pulled the engine on my 65 300SE, over a weekend, just to change the rear seal. I would let it drip now! It really does little harm, though outdoor cats will come in with a coat full of the dirty stuff once in a while. Now some people have had good luck trying different oils like Valvoline's hi mileage oil, which is designed to swell up seals. Even Mobil 1 is said to have some benefits for stopping seal leaks, though it will run out of crack that would stop conventional oils. Re: [MBZ] Post Falls SL
I began gluing up the driver's door skin and pocket. I peeled back the door skin at the bottom, first removing some staples, and then slid a sheet of mylar (floppy disk) coated with weatherstrip cement behind it. That should close up the small tears that are in the lower rear corner. I then washed the shattered door pocket plastic with acetone and glued a large sheet of thin sheet metal (from a tin can that was in the trash fire) to it with Shoe Goo. This metal was thin and malleable enough to conform to the curve, yet not quite so thin and weak as beer can material would have been. Clamps were used to force it to conform more-or-less to the correct shape imposed by the pocket's plastic. Several sessions will be required in order to restore this pocket to good condition, there is also a chunk out of the corner where the (missing) attachment screw should go. I then removed the door panel on the passenger side. As expected, the missing lock knob piece is not to be found. However, inside the bottom of the door was what looks like a window channel slider, and the roller from the broken door check. The spring-loaded lock coupling is bent, and the springs (typically) are broken. I should be able to come up with something from the junk box to fix this. Neither door had any of the vapor barrier left. Fools. I then removed the broken door check. That was, as is often the case, very difficult as the pin in the door frame was frozen. Much work with the BFH and prybars was required. Some more work with touch-up paint will now also be required. The check assembly itself was held in the door with only two 5mm Allen screws, unlike everything else I've seen which uses three 10mm hex bolts. Oooh, I _like_ the 107 door check! It's steel, with real coil springs and two rollers that roll over the thick shaped aluminum arm that's attached to the door frame. Eminently repairable, in other words, no wonder it's so expensive! The axle pin, a long rivet, for one of the rollers has disappeared. I should be able to replace it with a bolt or something and it'll be good as new. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

I made it about 2 blocks before the hood came up, whacked the windshield (at least a million pieces) , bent the hood hinges (about $700 new from the Benzes) and corners and the cowl top panel below the windshield. I was sick. I had to go back and buy some bungees right before the convenience store closed to tie the hood down so I could drive on home 50 miles away. 40 mph tops, and then the bungees would start to stretch. The wounded hood would bob up and down. A day later I though maybe there was coverage and called. No problem. Cost about a grand to fix the car. Shop took too long to fix car, but otherwise OK. there really is something sweet about old diesels in this regard. one thing you can be sure about any old neglected gasser is that it will be full of ignition issues. and any marginal but functional ignition will leave you stranded once it rains on an old car. once it is lit and warm, the old diesels just keep on firing fine. my old decrepit wagon is leaking everything out of everywhere and is mostly trashed, but just keep firing perfectly. Re: [MBZ] OT: Centerstands, was pillory!
hey Clay! there's no actual handle on my GS, but there's an exposed portion of the frame that's conveniently perfectly located for a grab with the right hand... and you're right that standing on that foot-pad on the stand while lofting the machine up and back is key. getting it down isn't difficult either; standing on the machines left side, both hands in bars, clutch in, brake lever covered, a solid body lean and push on the bars will roll it right off, and the front brake can be (gently!) engaged if necessary to keep it from rolling away from you. for additional safety, doing this while it's still in 1st gear (as it should be when it's parked) will also ensure that if it were to somehow get away from you and you were to lose coverage of the front brake on the right grip you would still be able to stop it by just letting out the clutch lever. if concerned about the machine falling off to the far side from you, keeping the handlebars very *slightly* turned to the machines right will ensure that any tipping of the machine is *towards* you rather than away from you. (of course, having it fall over *before* it's started is highly preferable to having it go over when running and in gear,...!) i find this easy enough with my GS even when loaded for touring and even though it's the Adventure model and has a taller stand than the standard GS; doing it with the standard GS is a breeze. cheers! e Redghost wrote: Hmmm, The beemer has a foot spot and a hand spot so that all you do is flip the center stand down, engage foot position, move right hand to hand grip, left on bars and yank it onto the stand while exerting pressure with foot. There is a battery clamp on the side of the tray that pushes a lip on the batter under the side of the battery tray. That being said, I've found that lifting straight up doesn't work all that well. Hi Todd, If the wrong sized battery was installed it can be *really, really* tough to get out. If the correct battery was installed it willl be merely *really tough*. The batteries in W123 cars all seem to be more difficult to change than is neccessary - The lip of the cowl sticks out a little too far and as you noted, the air filter assy interfers as well. It's been a while since I changed one but will removing the air filter housing help? Otherwise it's a matter of tilting and *coaxing* the battery out. Not easy for sure. Re: [MBZ] Ultra low sulfur diesel and old Injector Pumps
After a very short drive my daughter was sitting at a traffic light in her GL320cdi SUV when she noticed a big white cloud of something that looked like it may have come out of her exhaust. There was no other car close by that could have produced it. The car has just had it's first major service since she bought it. She says she may have gotten a tankful of less than the ultra low sulphur fuel. She hasn't seen any more white clouds behind the SUV since then. Does anyone have an idea what could have caused such a cloud? The only thing I could think of would be a headgasket letting water into a cylinder. The dealer is 60 miles away, so driving it there could be risky if there is something seriously wrong. Those sulfur containing molecules provide most of the lubricating qualities of diesel fuel, and are in fact quite good high pressure lubricants (much better than the paraffins or linear hydrocarbons, which make up 90+ % of the bulk diesel). pretty much SOL if you can't get it to turn I had a similar fate with an 85 SD after trying for over an hour and giving myself blisters trying to turn it I finally decided to try a more drastic solution I inserted the key and then took a screwdriver and pounded it in with a hammer so the screwdriver was alongside the key and in the tubler maybe 3/4 inch...I then took vicegrips around the screwdriver and twisted after a couple of trys I finally got it to turnpromptly drove to my indie left the key in the on position.killed the engine with the kill switch and unhooked the battery and had them order a new switch keyed for the car. seems like I paid 100ish as opposed to the 500ish they said it would have been. [MBZ] Type II ACC Amplifier Wisdom?
I concluded that the ACC amplifier on my 1979 300TD suddenly went bad. (but only after complete teardown and reassembly of the servo, which was my original suspect). VOM readings indicated all the inputs to the amp were OK and when I opened the amp, it was clearly bad with heat marls on several resistors and one resistor (I think) totally lose at one end (guess solder melted). But the servo, itself still runs nicely when I manually apply voltage to the appropriate pins. Question: What's the right fix? Does Jim Cathy have a trick for fixing these? Should I just buy a new $$$ one from Rusty? Does Kaleb have a stack of cheap used ones available? Any inputs would be appreciated. - Original Message - From: Alex Chamberlain [EMAIL PROTECTED] I don't know what kind of reputation the dealer service department where you live has, but around here I'd immediately suspect them of breaking something. Alex Chamberlain '87 300D Turbo kept far from the hamfisted clutches of dealer service True. They just bought the car and it has a very long warrantee on it, so they don't have much choice. Their main problem is the distance from a dealer. Re: [MBZ] Type II ACC Amplifier Wisdom?
Question: What's the right fix? Does Jim Cathy have a trick for fixing these? I don't have any of those, nor do I ever intend to. But I would myself, barring an easy/cheap used one, start by pulling any cooked components and testing them out, replacing any that failed the test. Re: [MBZ] ignition switch
Am I BONED? and need to get it drilled if I can't get it to turn? Eventually. But if you haven't spent at least an hour teasing it in a couple-three sessions you aren't ready to go there yet. Don't get so efficient at trying that when/if it DOES turn on you don't just turn it back off again 'cause you're in the groove. BTDT. Once you get it turned, immediately remove the ignition tumbler and use a screwdriver to start the car until you get a new one.

WOW, I can RR a 123 battery in less than 10 mins. I much prefer the pull out drop in of the 126. Remove the air cleaner. Have new rubber air cleaner mounts handy if yours are bad.
