[MBZ] 1985 300SD Primer pump leaks .
I ordered a new primer pump from Rusty. The new one is different in that it does not appear to 'lock down' . The old one to use I would turn the plunger to unlock / unscrew) so it would pop up to be used. It was a light colored nylon looking thing. The new one is sort black and a bit 'squishy' it does not appear to lock. Plunger stays 'up' and can always be operated. Anything I need to know before I replaced it. ( the old one is bad enough that it may not survive removal and I don't want to have a dead car because of inexperience on my part.) Re: [MBZ] Post Falls SL
Yesterday's gluing of the door pocket came out well, it looks good and seems nice and strong. Time for round two. I cut two thin strips of metal (stiffening spines from a wiper blade) to nestle into the ribs at the top of the pocket and glued them in place over the break there. (Shoe Goo, of course.) I also ran a bead over the few remaining minor cracks not covered by the metal sheet, and beaded over the metal's edge anywhere it was still exposed. This was set aside to dry. The vinyl repair on the door panel looked good too, so I used weatherstrip cement and a bunch of tiny spring clamps to put back the edge I'd peeled loose. I then fixed the door check. I found a 1.5 bolt with M8x1.25 threads that fit the roller perfectly. When in position half the roller would be on the non-threaded part, so that was good too. I threaded one of the two rivet holes in the spring-loaded arm in the check and drilled the other hole out to fit the non-threaded shank. I then greased the roller and assembled it, using a lock nut to secure it in place. (You can't tighten it into the check because the roller wouldn't spin if you do.) Then I greased up the other roller and the hinge joints and assembled it with the arm extended, as you do for the other cars' door checks. There, that's $170 I don't have to spend! OK, what I _don't_ like about the 107 door check is getting it into and out of the door. What a PITA. It came out with only moderate difficulty yesterday because it was in two pieces, but today... I had to take the check back apart and assemble it with the arm retracted, then dismount and shift the window lift mechanism in order to get enough room to twist the thing through the tiny maze of access holes to get it into place. Then I had to he-man the arm back out in order to get it into the frame hinge. However, once it was all installed it worked well. It took longer to install the check than it did to fix it. Inside the door bottom I found another one of those plastic shields, to go along with the window slider I'd already found. So much for using this door as a pattern for the other! I put another dab of weatherstrip glue on the torn passenger-side soft top window seal, since it was up, and took another stab at headlight adjustment. Some fool had managed to get some kind of plastic material glued into the screws at the top of one of the headlights, I had to take them apart and use a propane torch to soften it up enough to dig it out. Sheesh! I left the headlight bezels off until I can finish the dialing-in. (And I really need to do some paint touch-up under there too, both sides.) -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] W124 blowers (was: this looks like it might be a hell of a deal)
On 8/31/07, John Robbins [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Crap. Every time I get any kind of heat out of the vents it reeks. So what is making the smelly mess? The melting foam? Sure smells like burnt plastic now that I think about it. Yes. I spent months off and on chasing red herrings before I figured it out. One way to tell is to run your finger over the slats in the side dash vents. They will have a black, powdery build-up. That's the foam. There is (more like was) a sheet of it glued to either side of the recirculation flap, which closes off the blower box from outside air. You can't miss it once you have the blower out. I scraped off all of the rotten foam and much of the adhesive with a putty knife and heat gun, then reglued a piece of some sort of surplus compressible insulation material I had lying around---forget where it came from, but it was supposed to be heat- and oil- resistant, so should work OK. Without something to replace the foam you remove, the flap won't seal and the recirculation feature won't work very well (as well as closing off outside air when you press the dash button, it is also activated by the ACC brain to speed up heating or cooling when an extreme outside temperature is detected). Looks like I'll need to do this job then... At least I'll get some coil cleaner on the A/C as well :) Good idea. I scrubbed my evaporator off gently with Simple Green and rinsed it repeatedly with water until the drains below the car ran clean, which seemed to get rid of a lot of buildup. The smell is much better now. I'm hoping it will attenuate over time since the source of the foam is gone. My theory is that particles of the foam pass through the evaporator whenever the fan is on and are lodged in the heater core, then melt there when the heat first comes on (which is when I have noticed the strongest smell). But there's no way to clean the core without removing the dash. They are not the same. The coup windshield has a steeper slope the car has a lower roof line, but they used the same piece of glass. Also, the back window is slightly shorter because of the lower roof the seats sit lower to accommodate the lower roof line. I'm sure they also did some juggling around the rear of the engine compartment to accommodate the windshield since the bottom edge would sit slightly more foreword. The only auto miracle chemical that ever worked for me is NAPA's engine seal rejuvenator. I've fixed several cars with it that went tens of thousands of miles afterworlds. The blower motor going out is what quickly lead to my evaporator giving up the ghost. I wouldn't be surprised at all if his evaporator was leaking big time as well. I've been three summers without A/C now just waiting for the nerve to undertake an evaporatectomy. Problem is that since I sold the 300D for a song a couple of years ago I have no backup wheels. Once I tear this thing apart I'm grounded until I get it back together. There was a guy here in Austin trying to sell a 1995 E320 without air for $2900. Of course it also had 197K miles on it. Makes me cry to see these things cheaper than a 1979 300D... Re: [MBZ] this looks like it might be a hell of a deal
I once purchased a 1976 300D that was missing its AC pulley belt. After purchasing the car, I had the belt installed but it immediately broke because the rotary AC compressor was seized! If the belt is missing, that's the first thing I assume! -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

On our W123, the driver's side door check door frame pin bracket has broken loose from the frame. Since it's a U-shaped piece of steel whose long, flat section is on the other side of the metal frame from the pin, it's hard to repair. I think I've heard of people drilling a large-ish hole right between the eyes and then welding through the hole (so to speak) to tack the hinge bracket back down. I'm not sure where the spot welds are officially supposed to be, inboard or outboard of the hinge ears.
