I wish it was , with all these electrical devices failing the cost
advantage of the fuel saving is negated by all these electrical
failures. Your can buy fuel for 4000 km for the price of a heater valve
! At least I still have vehicles that have no Intel inside .

Re: [MBZ] Aluminum

2007-10-03 Thread Robert & Tara Ludwick
I was working in a machine shop then, and everytime someone brought a
vega engine through the door, we'd tell them right off that the head was
most likely going to be trashed beyond repair. Every one that came in
was either warped or cracked, most were too far gone to fix, and it was
generally cheaper and faster for the customer to just buy a new head.
It's funny, as many of those things I fooled with, I can't , for the
life of me, remember what they looked like. Was that some of that
useless GM injected molded aluminum that looked like styrofoam?

[MBZ] The wierdest seals I ever saw ...

2007-10-03 Thread Craig McCluskey
Passed up a pair of seals at the local NAPA, made by Chicago Rawhide,
which is owned by SKF, because they didn't look like the ones I had gotten
earlier from Rusty.

Today I got these from Rusty. Interesting concept, to seal the seal to the
backing plate as well as to the large part of the stub axle. But one
cannot use a flat seal driver as is shown in the factory service manual,
since that will press on the raised rubber lip and bend the flat metal
portion of the seal, just as I have already done.

Thanks for the explanation of EBay, Ernest, I might try that. Hemmings is a
(monthly?) very fat magazine with hundreds, maybe thousands of classified
type ads of cars for sale as well as larger ads for used car parts of all
kinds. It's been around for years. Usually the best place to find it is in
bookstores, newsstands, etc. Occasionally supermarkets will have them.

Re: [MBZ] Gear Indicator Light - 1991 300D 2.5T W124

2007-10-03 Thread LarryT
Thx Peter,
Finally got around to the bulb - removed the screw under the front edge
of the carpet and got that out of the way. Removed the trim around the
shift indicator and was able to wiggle the wood piece back and rotate it
upward to reveal the leading edge of the gearchange indicator. There's a
couple of wires that disappear into the front edge - pulled them out to
expose a light bulb socket - after much wasted time trying to remove a
non-existant cover -- Duh.. The socket contained a little Grain of Rice
bulb which looked bad. Retreived a replacement from my toolbox and Viola'
we now have light on the gearchange thingies. ;-)Spent some time
cleaning things as I put it all back together and was all done in less that
40 min or so.

Thanks for the guidelines - could find absolutely *nothing* about this
bulb in the WSM. Of course, since the WSM is written for pro mechanics I
guess that's understandable. While it was intuitive once I was close, I
prefer to start with a *little* info --

It's the same stuff.

The expansion tank is inside the trunk, and the vent itself (on a W115
chassis) is hidden by the rear bumper on the right side.

On the W123 chassis, there is another hose that comes down to a flared
rubber valve fitting near the rear axle.

It would be a tail wagon. On the rare sunny day in Seattle I could
cruise the junior colleges and troll for arm candy

Re: [MBZ] w109 seals

2007-10-03 Thread LarryT
I have some parts someone might need - they are felt pieces with a small
chrome strip that go around the window openings. I think I have 8-10 pieces
so let me know how many you need. The nes I have fit W108, 109 and 111 IIRC.

[MBZ] Bosch Injector Testing tool

2007-10-03 Thread Peter Merle
I have just bought a Bosch injector tester after the the Chinese one I
was conned into buying packed up after 3 years. Now the handbook
indicates that you should use the calibration fluid with a reference or
test injector but that you can use "pure diesel" for nozzle checking. Is
there any advantage in using the calibration fluid ? Is it perhaps less
aggressive on the internal seals of the pump?
