Re: [MBZ] This is a pretty car

2008-01-18 Thread andrew strasfogel
I know these cars very well (owned and restored two of them, plus several
111 coupes). The declining angle of the bumpers probably means they need to
be adjusted - relatively simply to do. I like the power windows although a
s/r would be nice. One wonders what's under the sheepskins

 It's a typical 280S W108 chassis - carburated version of the 280SE/SEL. I
owned one for many years - it was my 1st MB.

Big 6 cylinder that cruised effortlessly at 80 all day long - that was
 it;s
sweet spot - the suspension got firm and felt as smooth as glass - the
engine was running at the rpm it seemed to like - I guess it was into the
peak hp or peak torque rpm. It was a typical S Class sedan - MB offered
more powerful versions - like the 300SE/SEL 6.3 which was a true hot rod
 but
the 280S/SE/SEL was the S Class for the masses. Loved it.

My only complaint was the carbs (dual) which never seemed right altho I
usually for upper teens/low 20s gas mileage. I probably would have
 disliked
the FI even more since I knew nothing about FI at the time.

The price for this one is not bad - but I wouldn;t pay more that $2500 for
 a
very nice one. Also, this one doesn;t seem to have the typical rust
 around
the headlight buckets but the angle of the front bumper indicates rust on
the bumper supports - which can be pretty expensive to repair.

The 6 is more economical to operate and maintain that the 4.5 V8 common to
the 72-73 models. But nothing compares to a diesel for simplicity and
 economy.

Let ,me know if anyone gets serious about this car and Ill look closer at
the photos. Now that I think about it, I'd like to have one of these if I
 had the space.

 Take care --

Compare the $40 dealer price to $3.
The dealer one's I am told do not come pre bent.

You guys can yuck it up all you want, $3800 is a good price for this
thing regardless of engine problems.

FYI the OM617A swap in this is possible but non-trivial without athe
use of a special bellhousing andsome other odd bits.

These are not like cars... The bodies can rust away while the chassis
mechanicals can remain in pretty good shape. Sometimes you see
severe chassis rust on the agricultural models that have been used in
salty environments, but as a general rule the military models (like
this one) just have body sheet metal rust from sitting in a damp
military depot for 30 years. The mechanical parts are more than likely
fine. Trust me on this, I have seen a *lot* of unimogs up close and
body rust was never an indicator of mechanical condition...

As far as sheet metal goes, these are a very forgiving vehicle to learn
bodywork on. The military cabs are all hand-made to begin with, all
the panels are available and relatively easy to fit with simple body
tools, it is all sheet metal over a square tube frame.

Yup - it was me. I gave up on the 617 idea right after I got the SDL -
it HAS to be a 603 engine. The 603 is both lower, and much more V8
like than a 617. The difference is night/day.

I suspect the photog in that article thinks all Mercedes are Diesel
powered. Speaking of which, the book I'm reading now has a scene where
the WWII Germans are driving up in two Mercedes - they are identified
by sound because of the Diesel engines, then verified by sight. When
was the first Diesel put in a car by MB?

Re: [MBZ] speedometer

2008-01-18 Thread andrew strasfogel
My son's 1985 300D registered wacky speeds (too high) until I realized that
it had a replacement speedometer from a 240D that - surprise!! - also showed
a lot less mileage than was truthful. When looking for a used replacement I
learned that the 1985 300D speedometer was unique to that model year.

I'm thinking the drive cable is not turning fast enough. I think this
 cable
is gear driven, hence not adjustable.
The speedometer is steady at all speeds, not jumping up or down, so I
 don't
think theres slippage in the cable.

Have you recently changed the nylon input drive gear in the speedometer?
They come with different drive ratios.

Also, they make mechanical ratio changers that insert into the speedometer
cable. A miniature planetary drive adapts the cable speed to get the
 correct
 reading.

Yeah, who was it who wanted to put a 617 in a 107 chassis, with a big

Is this, in general, what speedometer repair shops do? Or does the
repair vary depending on the car? I have wondered about this for a
while. I know there are places that will put your car on a calibrated
dynamometer and compute the exact error in the speedo, but then what
do they do with the information?

Several years ago, somebody here (or mbz.org) claimed to have done the
measuring, and if you gave the engine the normal height above ground there
would be 2-3 inches of interference between the timing chain bulge on the
valve cover and the R107 hood. I don't know if that would also make the
air filter too high, or if a hood scoop over the valve cover would do the
trick.

I have seen OM617/R107 cars for sale, the last one I can recall was
on eBay UK a year or two ago. I don't know if they use different
mounting arms and give up oil pan clearance or how they do it.

The actual cars I've seen pictures of didn't have anything obvious
done to the hood. (except for the guy who put an intercooler on
top of an OM617 and dropped it all into a W115, he had a HUGE
hood scoop)
