Yes, here in Texas it is a requirement to furnish replaced parts on
 demant.
They have already made an excuse not having them (should have told me
 upfront).
I don't know what the legal consequences are, but if that goes to court it
 may be against the shop.
The biggest problem is that all this is done verbally and than it's my

My '96 Dakota has 210,000 miles. Other than the sticky valve back around
Christmas its just fine.

I never did follow up, the Lucas stuff worked good but made the trans shift
weird when it was cold.
A couple weeks ago it got a fluid flush and filter change (not a backflush, I
was quite clear on that) and now its nearly 100%.
It still keeps the TC locked up sometimes coming to a stop but strangely only
when my wife is driving, it almost never does it to me.
She's gotten pretty adept at shifting into neutral coming to a stop if the
engine starts to die...

So we're good for who knows how long. I'm starting to set aside money for a new
truck. Ideally another '96 Dakota with 1/2 the mileage and no rust.

Back in 2003 you probably didn't need it, but my Dad sold his '96 3.9 ex-cab
SLT 4x4 for a song with 62k on the clock and minor rust on the door bottoms.
The 2002 dwarfed it during the year they sat side by side. The only major
differences in the two were the V8 , power seats and electric transfer case
in the '02 and the electric moonroof in the '96. Dad even ordered the 2002
in the same color scheme. It's notably taller than the '96 was, so Dad
had to have step boards put on it just so he could get in.

BTW, my great uncle had a transfer case failure in his 2003 a couple of
weeks ago. Seems the wiring connector came unplugged at the xfer case, so
when you turned the switch to 4x4 it just blinked at you. Nothing like
watching a short tempered 96 year old try to turn around on a wet grassy
hill and find out his 4x4 won't engage. At least we know his LSD works,
he left a matched pair of trenches everywhere he went. My 190E's LSD

grass.

Re: [MBZ] Auto Taxes, etc.

2008-01-26 Thread LWB250
There are advantages and disadvantages to Wisconsin's
socialist ways. When we left in 96 the property taxes
were nothing short of horrendous. On a house with an
assessed value of $150k (market value of around $250k)
we were paying $5600/year in property taxes.

Ouch.

It was especially tough on the retirees and others on
fixed incomes.

That being said, the schools were nothing short of
being top-notch. To get the equivalent quality of
education here in Florida, they would have to attend a
private school at the tune of about $10k/year in
tuition.

There are advantages and disadvantages to Wisconsin's
socialist ways. When we left in 96 the property taxes
were nothing short of horrendous. On a house with an
assessed value of $150k (market value of around $250k)
we were paying $5600/year in property taxes.

Ouch.

It was especially tough on the retirees and others on
fixed incomes.

That being said, the schools were nothing short of
being top-notch. To get the equivalent quality of
education here in Florida, they would have to attend a
private school at the tune of about $10k/year in
tuition.

Re: [MBZ] Auto Taxes, etc.

2008-01-26 Thread Tom Hargrave
The property tax situation in Metro Milwaukee is worse now. My wife has
local friends who are making $700 / month house payments $350 / month
property tax payments.

Every weekend I'm up there, I hear of fixed income elderly being forced to
sell their (paid for) homes because they can no longer afford to pay
property taxes.

My house payment is about $700 / month and last year's property tax was $480
- and that was for the entire year!

Being from another Socialist state - NY state, and having lived a long time
in both environments, I could climb further onto my soap box but would
rather not.

The short story is that residents of the northern states are screwed because
they have to pay exorbitant costs for road repair and snow removal. And the
costs propagate all the way through the system.

We don't have these incremental costs in the south.

Good old Andy is correct.
I have not thought of him in quite awhile. He was my high school English

was the best teacher I ever had for any subject) favorite metaphysical poet.
I remember something about a Coy Mistress...I think Eliot refers to it in

Andrew rocks.

I think it should be no big surprise that the trans is on its way out, 210,000
is alota miles on an American type auto box...
But... Something was stuck and I had nothing but first and reverse. I put in
the Lucas stuff and drove it around some then let it sit overnight. The next
day I had first, second and reverse right off. Then as I drove it more it got
more normal until now its back to fully normal.
In fact its back to better than it was before this whole fiasco, shifts a
little smoother, engages a little quicker.

Is it on its way out? Aren't we all?

My '96 Dakota has 210,000 miles. Other than the sticky valve back
 around
Christmas its just fine.

I never did follow up, the Lucas stuff worked good but made the trans
 shift
weird when it was cold.
A couple weeks ago it got a fluid flush and filter change (not a
 backflush,
I was quite clear on that) and now its nearly 100%.
It still keeps the TC locked up sometimes coming to a stop but
 strangely
only when my wife is driving, it almost never does it to me.
She's gotten pretty adept at shifting into neutral coming to a stop if
 the
engine starts to die...

So we're good for who knows how long. I'm starting to set aside money
 for a
new truck. Ideally another '96 Dakota with 1/2 the mileage and no rust.

Dwarfed, do you mean better or just bigger?

Has he had trouble with ball joints? I think mine has has 2 in the 150,000 I've
owned it.

Is his the 4.7l v8? 1mpg better than mine is listed at, the same as the '96 v6,
thats not too bad.
The '07 is 1mpg better than that...

Strange to me that it goes from a 5.2l v8 to a 4.7l v8 and we pick up 1mpg. I
suspect its a big gain in HP though.
Wiki says mine (5.2l) makes 235hp.

*Groan*

Wiki says the 4.7l from 2000-2004 was 230hp...
The 2007 and later makes a mind bending 302hp, the v6 makes 210!

Interestingly it also lists a 114hp (221 lb/ft of torque!) 4cyl diesel that
unfortunately is noted to have overheating/self destructing problems.

Good read the Dodge Dakota Wiki.

Back in 2003 you probably didn't need it, but my Dad sold his '96 3.9
 ex-cab
SLT 4x4 for a song with 62k on the clock and minor rust on the door
 bottoms.
The 2002 dwarfed it during the year they sat side by side. The only
 major
differences in the two were the V8 , power seats and electric transfer
 case
in the '02 and the electric moonroof in the '96. Dad even ordered the
 2002
in the same color scheme. It's notably taller than the '96 was, so Dad
had to have step boards put on it just so he could get in.

BTW, my great uncle had a transfer case failure in his 2003 a couple of
weeks ago. Seems the wiring connector came unplugged at the xfer case,
 so
when you turned the switch to 4x4 it just blinked at you. Nothing like
watching a short tempered 96 year old try to turn around on a wet
 grassy
hill and find out his 4x4 won't engage. At least we know his LSD works,
he left a matched pair of trenches everywhere he went. My 190E's LSD
clutches are totally shot (215k) I can't even spin both tires on damp
grass.

Re: [MBZ] Auto Taxes, etc.

2008-01-26 Thread LWB250
Actually, the bulk of the property taxes go to
schools. At least they used to. I lived north of
Milwaukee, right on the lake, in Port Washington.
Over 80% of our property taxes went to fund local
schools, and we didn't have a problem with that. That
being said, the mil rate that was used to calculate
taxes was the killer.

And yes, I have vivid memories of when our little city
of roughly 9,000 people was re-assessed in the early
90s. Property values had skyrocketed due to suburban
crawl from Milwaukee, and there were little 1950s 1000
square foot bungalows in older sections of the city
that had their assessed values go up 5x-7x or more.
Most of these had the original owners, or owner who
were older and if not retired, closely approaching it.
Many of them challenged their assessments and won.

The city had hired an assessment firm that had their
heads up their asses. For example, they had two
additional rooms in our house and another 400 square
feet in it (it was a two story cape that was a touch
under 3,000 sf.) We challenged and won as well.

That didn't help the older folks, though, because
their property values had still increased
substantially. It did some major damage to the
demographics of the city and drove a lot of people
out, unfortunately.

I would still go back.

The situation in Florida is rapidly approaching that
of the northern states, mainly because the tremendous
growth has overwhelmed the infrastructure, forcing
local governments to inflict substantial increases in
property taxes.

Our assessed value is around $168k. Our market or
just value is around $275k. 2007 taxes were $3500.
The house next door to us, which is nearly identical
in lot size and square footage, and has changed hands
twice since it was built, is assessed at $283k, with a
just value of $283k. Their 2007 taxes were $6300.

If we move and stay in the state, we lose our
homestead exemption and pay higher taxes. Not a lot
different from Wisconsin.

[MBZ] 300cd no-start hell

2008-01-26 Thread Lee Einer
Well, I went out to replace the glow plugs on my wife's benz, in front
of our home where it has sat for two weeks because it would not start.
Special-ordered glow plugs from auto-zone x2 because they got me the
wrong plugs the first time out. Discovered to my dismay that some
asshole hit the car last night and took off.

Anyway, reamed all the glow plug ports, replaced the glow plugs, and
reconnected the injector lines. Cranked three times, no start due to air
in the lines, fourth time, a click and nothing else. Brand new battery.
Tests as having a full charge. Jumpering the battery cable to the
solenoid also produced nothing but a click.

WTF? What is the next step? and howinthehell do you get at the starter
on a 300CD? Looks fairly inaccessible from both top and bottom of the
engine compartment.

[MBZ] '84 300d problems....

2008-01-26 Thread trey daugherty
hello, my name is trey. i'm from ardmore, oklahoma and just happened to
come across your website while looking around on eBay for some parts to
my mercedes. i bought my '84 300d from a guy in edmond about 6 months
ago and have been somewhat pleased with it since then. the only thing
that has me unhappy is what i'm assuming is a vacuum problem. about 2
months ago i noticed that my car wouldn't die when i turned the key off.
so i began popping the hood and just killing it like that. well over
time this got more and more annoying so i ended up ordering a vacuum
pump from the guy that i'd purchased the car from and had my dad help me
to install it. this seemed to help somewhat for a little while. however,
within the past month i've noticed that the problem is back. along with
not dying when i turn the key off, i've also noticed that the locks are
hesitant to lock and unlock when the key is turned in the door, the air
conditioner / heater tends to go from blowing really hard to hardly at
all and that braking has become very hard to do. but the only thing is,
sometimes these problems exist and other times they don't. so i didn't
know if there is possible a vacuum line leak or what? anyway, if you
have any suggestions or advice, i would greatly appreciate it.

thank you,
trey

[MBZ] Fuel vacuum again?

You might want to get a spare cap and drill it, or take off the cap
gasket until you get this fixed. (if you don't want another crumpled tank)
You should not be able to pull a vacuum on the tank via the fuel lines
under the hood. As long as you can do that, so can the engine.

You might want to pull up the carpet in the trunk and take a look,
it would be a pity if the new tank has a crease in it already.

The brake circuit *SHOULD* be protected from vacuum leaks in the non
essential circuits like the locks, climate control, engine stop, etc.
I'd check for vacuum at the pump and work my way down to the brake
booster. It is possible that a cracked brake booster could cause
the whole mess, but you'd want to be very sure about that diagnosis
before going to the expense and bother of replacing it. (OTOH, the vac
pump was probably a great deal of expense and bother too)

The W110 had 13 wheels stock, yeah they are small. Hard to get
proper tires for them too.

know if there is possible a vacuum line leak or what?

You have an intermittent (and getting worse) vacuum leak.
Classic.

If you do not have a MityVac (or equivalent), you need to
get one, then start dividing and conquering the various
vacuum systems. Start with the locks. As a test, remove
the yellow hose from the vacuum supply cluster under the
hood and put a golf tee in the rubber to cork it off.
Then get back to us.

The suction in the tank was such that the fuel cap was difficult to
remove. I mean, tug hard and then a huge woosh sound of sucking air.

So, exactly what did you do to CURE the original problem? Did
you replace the vent valve?

 ...remove the yellow hose...

I suppose I should mention that this will take the
vacuum door lock system down! It's usually the
first culprit to check, well before you replace
a vacuum pump.

Yeah I was amazed when I moved to Minnesota and first saw this - amazed that
it's legal!

I would sometimes, on my drive back from school, see a mail carrier doing
about 60 down a curvy mountain road driving from the passenger seat.

Re: [MBZ] Fuel vacuum again?

2008-01-26 Thread Timothy Robinson
Jim,

Just purchased the car last summer and didn't even drive it until about
September. The fuel gauge didn't work. No big deal as I just made it a habit
of topping it off regularly. Average one leg of day's commute is about 27-30
miles.

I ran out of fuel... but was suprised when it only took 8 gallons to fill
the tank. Repeat of same... I discovered the tank was imploded to like 1/2
it's volume.

The previous owner admitted that he thought someone had used the car at
one time to smuggle drugs (seriously, that's what he thought as he'd
discovered the tank had been crushed in to make room for a big ole sack of
dope.)

Anyway, it was obvious that vent was clogged. I wound up replacing the tank
and broken sending unit. Was good as new. Indie said the vent was clear.

It was only this afternoon when filling the tank I discovered the great
vacuum in the tank and became concerned could the vent be stopped up again.

T

(Told you the long story... because as I'd written before, I got the care
super cheap 'cause the previous owner had discovered the tank which he
didn't disclose at sale.)

Yes, I am required to drive on the wrong side of the road to deliver papers.
If I refused, I'd be fired.
As for unsafe: I do it as safely as I can, unlike almost every other paper
delivery drive I have ever seen - maniacs. The fact that they are paid by
paper delivered, and not the hour adds to the problem.

Who requires you to drive in an unsafe manor?

Who will be responsible for any accident you are in or cause?

Your employer has at least attempted to distance him self from
 liability.

Do you have a whole bunch of insurance?

Have you notified your insurance company you are using the car during
the course of business? In an unsafe manor?

I have heard stories of wasps mudding up the vent on diesel fuel tanks,
could be repeatable because some bees home back to the same place again and
again.

Or if you drive over freshly irrigated ground, you might be clogging the
vent, which hangs down at the front center of the tank and has a little screen
unit on it about 3/4 inch diameter.

Good luck,

I even considered if water might have gotten into the vent line and perhaps
frozen. Was in 20s tonight when I fueled.
