Jim,

another data point in support of your suggestion - when the change in engine
tenor happened, I pulled over and took a quick look under the hood for
obvious signs. I puled the oil fill cap on the cam cover only for a second
and there was tons of blow-by. Hmmm. You might have put your finger on it.

Re: [MBZ] OT: 100 MPG is it really possible

2008-02-27 Thread Lee Einer
Blow off the assumption of 3,000 lbs vehicle weight. My wife's four-door
Jetta weighed about half that. And carbon fiber technology can build
sturdy vehicles that are MUCH lighter.

There are cars on the road now that get 80 - 90 MPG. Not here, our
gummint tends to keep them out, but in Europe, Asia and elsewhere, you bet!

VW built a prototype two-seater back in 2003 that was roadworthy,
traveled at freeway speeds and got well over 200 mpg. They scrapped it,
citing limited consumer interest.

OK, there's a finite amount of energy in a gallon of fuel.
Assuming perfect extraction of that energy (which is

ground what is the theoretical maximum MPG you could get?

On a flat road, not accelerating, the weight does not matter at
all - except that it can have an impact on rolling resistance.
The things that require energy are air resistance and rolling
 resistance.

Put steel wheels on a steel rail to make the rolling
resistance as small as possible. Air resistance is Cd
(coefficient of drag) times the frontal area (silhouette
profile as viewed from the front) times the cube of the air
 speed.

Wikipedia has a list of CdA for various cars.
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automobile_drag_coefficients

Cd but not frontal area listed for any MB cars.

 This site
 http://www.mayfco.com/mercedes.htm

 has data on a '77 280E. That's a W123, isn't it?

It list the Cd as 0.380
and the frontal area as 23.03 sq-ft (or 2.14 m^2)

This site has a formula for calculating the power needed.
 http://www.bobnorwood.com/300%20mph%C2%A0%20The%20Aerodynamics%20of%20Drag%20and%20Power.htm

This site has a couple formula
 http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner/bvillecar/bville%20-%20LSR%20Thoughts-1.html

 To move the '77 280E at 70 mph (112 km/h) requires aprox 25 hp

Just for comparison, one of the best production cars for total
air drag is the GM EVI. It requires only 10 hp to travel at
 70 mph. (CdA of 3.95 ft^2)

Meanwhile, the Hummer H2 (CdA of 26.5 ft^2) needs 65 hp.

 Okay, on to the fuel.
One horsepower equals 2545 Btu per hour
Our car needs 25 hp, so 63,625 Btu/hr
 At 70 mi/hr that becomes 909 Btu/mi
 Diesel fuel contains 130,500 Btu/gallon

So if all of the energy in one gallon of diesel fuel went to
moving the car forward at 70 miles per hour, no wind, flat road,
 constant speed - the 1977 280E would get aprox 145 miles/gallon.

Oops. I just put diesel fuel in a gasoline car!!

 Re-figured with 115,000 Btu/gallon for gasoline its only 127
 miles/gallon.

 I
think these claims of hundreds of MPG are either using cars
made of balsa wood or moving at 5 MPH, neither of which is
 reasonable for real-world transportation.

I doubt that more than 70 - 80 MPG will ever be achieved in a
real-world family car that is crash-safe and moves at normal
speeds. But, I've not worked out the physics -- I'm sure
someone has, anyone know of a web site that discusses this?

I have attached a spreadsheet I just built to play with it.

Gas prices hit record high
U.S. flush with supply, economy is weak, but a speculation-based rally

By many measures, this shouldn't be a record week for oil and gasoline
prices.

Fuel inventories are at 14-month highs, gasoline demand is down nearly 4
percent from this time last year and the U.S. economy is sluggish. The
country is so flush with gasoline it actually exported some to oil-rich
Nigeria this month

Recall the informal blowby test of a 617: you pull

[MBZ] OT LED Lighting

2008-02-27 Thread Harry Watkins
This is part of an article from USA Today. See all of it at:

http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/techinnovations/2005-04-14-led-lighting_x.htm

Harry

LEDs have been around since the 60s, but have mostly been relegated to
showing the time in an alarm clock or the battery level of a video camera.

They haven't been used as sources of illumination because they, for a long
time, could not produce white light — only red, green and yellow. Nichia
Chemical of Japan changed that in 1993 when it started producing blue LEDs,
which combined with red and green produce white light, opening up a whole
new field for the technology.

And the industry has been quick to exploit it. LEDs are based on
semiconductor technology, just like computer processors, and are increasing
in brightness, energy efficiency and longevity in a way that's reminiscent
of the way each year's new crop of processors is faster and cheaper than
last year's.
Just this week, researchers at the Lighting Research Center at Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., said they had boosted the light output
per watt of a white LED to almost six times that of an incandescent light
bulb, beating even a compact fluorescent bulb in efficiency.

The current generation of mass-produced white LEDs is not as effective. It's
about twice as good as a light bulb of the same wattage, but the energy
savings aren't enough to overcome the major drawback of being expensive.

It's hard to convince consumers based on energy savings alone, said
Nadarajah Narendran, director of lighting research at Rensselaer. If you
look at compact fluorescent lamps, they're four times as efficient as
incandescent lights, and how many homes have those? It's less than 5%
penetration.

But development is brisk, and the Department of Energy has estimated that
LED lighting could cut national energy consumption for lighting by 29% by
2025. The total savings on U.S. household electric bills until then would be
$125 billion

Re: [MBZ] A puzzler worthy of CarTalk

2008-02-27 Thread Peter Frederick
Turn the engine by hand and see how stiff it is, also note any strange noises.

There are many possiblities, including bent rods (although that usually causes
vastly increased oil consumption very quickly).

Trashing a running engine can do all sorts of stuff -- in your case, I suspect
a spun bearing (probably #2, the thrust bearing) - it knocked (low frequency
sound, deep in the engine, thunk thunk thunk, not a snapping hammer on a nail
in oak noise of a bad injector).

If the oil pump shaft sheared, you'd have had no oil pressure -- you DO watch
that guage, right?

Plan on a rebuild or replacement engine, when they won't turn, you will need
pistons, sleeves, bearings, and possibly crank and/or rods plus the valve job
to make it right.

All part of the global redistribution of waste. For all the waste we cause
by having products made offshore, (and I know it's all our fault, nothing to
do with their own lack of regulations and quality control), we import a
large amount of that waste back into our own country in the way of pet food,

children's toys, and other products.

Dave M. posted at some point a link to a Japanese (?) site selling
non-open diffs of some kind for the 201 and 124. I think they were
Torsens and fairly reasonably priced. My experience with used LSDs,
whether already in a car or acquired at a PnP or similar, has not been
good---after a while they all need to be rebuilt by a specialist for
$$$, so you might as well just buy new.

Hey, didn't the AMG Hammer come with a Torsen diff? How'd they do it?
Yeah, I know, extensive hand-fabbing that wouldn't be worth the time
and effort to duplicate...

You see the problem is that nobody refers to global warming anymore as
 that's a misnomer. It's not just the warming that's a problem, is a large

Weather patterns are changing and that is what is responsible for
things like Katrina and the
colder winters in some warm places.

Is it ocean currents causing this? Change is water salinaton levels?

Who knows...but to use the term global warming is to date oneselfso to

[MBZ] W124 uneven heat on acceleration

2008-02-27 Thread Alex Chamberlain
Gentlemen,

Lately I get a burst of hot air from the vents on acceleration from a
stop, which corrects itself after a few seconds as the ACC adjusts.
Isn't this exactly what the auxiliary water pump under the washer tank
is supposed to prevent? I thought the usual failure mode with that
part is to freeze up and short out, but I have a fuse installed inline
with it per Marshall's recommendation (to protect the ACC switch panel
if the pump does short out), and that fuse is not blown. Could it
have failed in some other way? How do I test it---take it out of the
system, put it in a tank of water, apply 12V and see if it goes?

for eons, and whatever humans do will not stop it. Get over it.
Humans are insignificant in the face of nature, or God, whichever way
you choose to view it.

Where I live has been tropical, arctic and temperate over the long
term. All that was without human input.
Read the scientific data. The proof is there.

Is it ocean currents causing this? Change is water salinaton levels?

Who knows...but to use the term global warming is to date oneselfso to

Car and Driver has the Challenger on the cover, too - AND I am in LUST. I
think that is a VERY cool car. I like the old MOPAR hot rods and this one is a
pretty good retro recreation. I showed it to my wife last night and told her
if we win the lottery, it will be one of the cars I want to buy (I need to find
a new house with a 10 car garage).

The first one would be the E320 Diesel. That way, I can save fuel while
driving over to pick up my new Hemi Challenger.

yards from their back door). They got 7 feet of water in their house. The House
is 4 feet above the level of the Bayou. I would stay away from any used car
purchased from an individual seller. My father's Avalon and my stepmother's
Mercedes were completed flooded in the garage. There was not a water line
because the water was over the roof of the cars.

Here is a little plug for USAA insurance. They sent somebody down who spent 15
minutes in the house. Then they wrote them a check for the full flood coverage
including contents. They also had the regular homeowner's coverage which
covered damage to the second floor because the chimney on the house collapsed
and wind driven rain damaged the second floor. They also had separate car
insurance which not only paid them (what I thought was FULL retail value), but
they towed the vehicles away the same day.

Re: [MBZ] OT: 100 MPG is it really possible

2008-02-27 Thread Rory
Blow off the assumption of 3,000 lbs vehicle weight. My wife's four-door
Jetta weighed about half that. And carbon fiber technology can build
sturdy vehicles that are MUCH lighter.

I don't think there has ever been a Jetta much below 2000lbs. this
chart of 99-05 models show about 2500-2800:
http://consumerguideauto.howstuffworks.com/1999-to-2005-volkswagen-golf-jetta-4.htm
My brother drag raced his 65 Galaxie which weighed in a 2900 lbs. and
newer Accords are close to 4K

After a brief search the data I found on MK1 VW's showed a curb weight
if about 1800 lbs for a rabbit, the Jetta would be heavier.

I would specualte, that 3000 lbs is on the low end for a 4-5 seat car
these days, and not an unreasonable starting point for real world
mileage target.

doesn't matter if there is 1 or a dozen LED being driven. And no
heat from a resistor that's wasting 118V.

Howdy -
Should I clean the swtch with some contact cleaner and put Deoxit on it?

IIRC the flasher switch is below the hazard button and is removed by pulling
it up from the console - I don't think the console cover needs to come up -
right? I'm 99% sure the window switches come up the same way.

The turnsignals in my 78 240D are only working when they feel like it.

Cycle the hazard switch a bunch. It gets dirty. All flashing
is done by a single flasher whose output is routed both by this
 switch and the stalk switch.

Bayou. I would stay away from any used car purchased from an
individual seller. My father's Avalon and my stepmother's Mercedes
were completed flooded in the garage. There was not a water line
because the water was over the roof of the cars.

My parents live about 20 miles inland of Bay St. Louis/Waveland
(Kiln)... so all they had were a few missing shingles, and insurance
took care of that no problem. My former in-laws got 7ft of water in
Ocean Springs, and insurance didn't cover a bit of it.

Here is a little plug for USAA insurance. They sent somebody down
who spent 15 minutes in the house. Then they wrote them a check for
the full flood coverage including contents. They also had the
regular homeowner's coverage which covered damage to the second floor
because the chimney on the house collapsed and wind driven rain
damaged the second floor. They also had separate car insurance which
not only paid them (what I thought was FULL retail value), but they
towed the vehicles away the same day.

Wish I was eligible for it!! Sounds like a good company. That is all too
rare in insurance companies...

Next time you come down and visit your parents let me know, and we can
meet up or something.

Exactly - the Autobahn is 27 thick - made up of asphalt concrete and is
less likely to crack than the US interstates that are not nearly so thick.

They also credit the safety with the more lengthy licensing requirements -
and more costly at ~$2000. The fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles is
.72 for the Autobahn and .84 for US Interstates.

It's really an interesting show - they also show all the design features we
see everyday - cloverleafs, divided highways, banked curves and miltiple
lanes to make passing safer which were developed in ~1913.

Of course the people doing the construction didn't find it so exciting -
many were laid-off office workers not used to manual labor - and there was
very little earth moving equipment available. They built some beautiful
bridges though - many built using stone.

I am pretty sure I saw that crash on youtube a while back.
The design philosophy of the autobahn sort of runs parallel with the MB
design philosophy, build it right and then you only have to maintain it.
That's the problem I have now, my 300TE yearns for the autobahn and
every time I put my foot down it leaps forward in anticipation of going
 200K's +.

 Kind
of says from the start that they won't be any good and then hobbles their
final term with lame duck status.

If you get a good candidate doing a good job, why not let them stay
in? It doesn't do harm to other countries.

Again though, it relies on a populace that's actually interested in
the political process...( or at least willing to vote)

And would it be possible to shorten this process?? It goes on for far too
long. You guys must get awfully tired of listening to their
rhetoric...especially as it changes with the wind so much(as they all

while they do it. So the answer is never. That article says there is
no good (or any) reason (based on the usual factors) why oil is $100/bbl
and gas shot up $0.30 overnight or in a couple of days.

And reserves keep being found that expand the potential supply of the
stuff, might cost a bit more to get it, but its there. So, when you
figure out the answer, you can become a trader and make millions so you
won't ever have to worry or whine or have any sorts of concerns about
the price. In the meantime you can buy stock in the oil companies.

 Gas prices hit record high
U.S. flush with supply, economy is weak, but a speculation-based rally
 driving costs

By many measures, this shouldn't be a record week for oil and gasoline
 prices.

Fuel inventories are at 14-month highs, gasoline demand is down nearly 4
percent from this time last year and the U.S. economy is sluggish. The
country is so flush with gasoline it actually exported some to oil-rich
 Nigeria this month

The politicians sort of mean well. They want to please people so that they get
re-elected. Unfortunately, there are
lots of soccer mommies and people like that with the opinion that the
government needs to enact all sorts of laws
to protect us from ourselves. They tend, for whatever reason, to get heard. The
politicans want to appear to be
doing something about these percieved problems and so we get new laws. In
Canada that included the silly gun
registration laws that cost a fortune and did very little good. The bad guys
have more unregistered guns than ever.
The rest of us are looked upon as criminals if we express any interest in guns.

You forgot EGR that clogs or sticks open and can't be disabled by
hand because the engine computer will detect it and cut turbo boost.
The only advantage of the '86-'87 603 cars (besides the obvious extra
cylinder's worth of power) is that they are less electronic and thus
more easily hotrodded w/ EGR delete, intercoolers, water injection,

Somebody w/ embedded systems savvy needs to come up with a hack to

The signal you'd have to hack would be the airflow meter... you'd have
to figure out whatever airflow MB wanted based on throttle position,
RPM, etc... which would be a royal pain.

Dave M. has sourced Garrett parts to replace the vacuum actuated

Replace the monovalve (no repair kit for these, you have to swap the
whole thing). This fixed that exact problem on mine this week. It
will get worse, you will eventually not get enough heat to defrost
the windshield!

Mine was stuck nearly closed -- no flow until the engine rpms were
above 2000 or so, which means on the highway.

You should also probably check the resistance of all the temp
sensors, as one way out can do strange things, too -- I need to get
into the dash and replace the evaporator temps sensor this weekend.

Inadequate sleep is related to weight gain, ADD symptoms, and
narcolepsy. With sleep apnea, one doesn't in fact sleep well at
all, even though you don't really wake up completely. You instead
have the sleep cycle disrupted several to many times an hour, and
don't get any REM sleep to speak of.

Headgasket, as noted. Not known for cracking unless overheated,
otherwise the normal W124 stuff -- tie rods and drag link plus
steering damper around 200,000 miles, rear suspension links and
mounts about the same milage. Broken sunroof lift angles can be
expensive, but you may have the new ones in a 93.

No wiring problems, that started in 94, although you may find some
dead ones.

Cracked evaporator cores aren't unknown, and are a deal killer so far
as I'm concerned (although I may actually have one -- that would make
2 out of three cars so far). The seals on the compressor go bad,
expect to replace the front seal, the manifold o-rings or seal plate,
and all the o-rings in the AC system when it blows out. Should have
you set for another couple hundred thousand miles then.

Is that a decent deal? I'm thinking 2k instead of 2800.

I'd like to know how sleep apnea could contribute to major weight gain.

we know that. bill is arguing that sleep apnea is a major contributing

Sure sounds like somebody got cause and effect backwards, unless I'm
missing the point here.

Replace the monovalve (no repair kit for these, you have to swap the

above 2000 or so, which means on the highway.

Thanks, Peter. Yeah, now that I think of it, I never get much hot air
at idle regardless of the ACC temp wheel setting. IIRC that's
consistent with monovalve failure. Makes sense.

I am overdue for a coolant flush, anyway, so I don't mind opening up
the system---but is there any way to test the old monovalve before
springing for a new one? (I don't have the FSM handy, so for all I
know there may be a procedure in there---apologies in advance for not
RTFM.)

You should also probably check the resistance of all the temp
sensors, as one way out can do strange things, too -- I need to get
into the dash and replace the evaporator temps sensor this weekend.

Did that a couple of years ago, but I suppose they could very well
have failed since then.
