He was hanging the dog in midair from the leash at the time. I don't think
the article I linked contained that detail.

It's against the rules of common sense at least.
When I called the local sheriff's department to report a woman
who assaulted me with a pickup truck, the deputy made darn sure
I couldn't see his computer terminal when he ran the plate. He
was a friend of the family, but he clearly thought it would
cause trouble with his job if he let me know who the woman
was or where she lived.

On the subject of 'lying cops': It's a crime in all 50 states
to lie to a cop, and apparently standard procedure for them to
lie to the serfs. Special rules for the ruling class, ya know.

2008-03-15 Thread Zoltan Finks
That's pretty sad.
Not to belittle the incident, but it is actually really weird to me that the
dog would hold still for repeated kicks from a guy who, by judging by his
appearance, could not move that fast. Also weird that the dog would be
mortally injured by such. I mean, dogs tend to be so tough that you could
drop bricks on their heads and they barely seem to feel it. Guess that
doesn't mean their brains are necessarily protected from impact. I'm
guessing that the dog in this incident (and it almost makes me want to cry
thinking about it) was submissive enough to just hold still and take the
beating.

Also: I really with I knew that it was against the rules for an officer to
release personal I.D. information to another citizen. That's exactly what
this lying cop did to me.

Re: [MBZ] Painting a fender $???

2008-03-15 Thread E M
Depends to what quality level you want to go. I find, painting a part off a
car, (old paint going next to new) you will never get a perfect match and
you'll see it at 20 paces. I've had fenders painted on cars, and they
"feather" the paint in, and you can't tell. And I'm really really fussy.
If it's just a quick paint fender off to make it look presentable, I would
think $150-200 should do it, maybe less as some discount places. You could
probably be careful and wet sand it down a little yourself after painting,
and get some of the orange peal out. Just watch when you're near the
corners and edges, easy to go through. maybe think about having it painted
while on. It's not a new finder, so all the hidden bits are already painted
and protected.

2008-03-15 Thread LWB250
Easy.

If you look closely at the headlight wiper where it is
mounted on the motor shaft, you'll notice that the
metal cover that matches the arm is hinged. If you
carefully pry the cover up, you'll find a 10mm nut on
the end of the motor shaft. Take the nut off and the
arm will come off, much like a regular windshield
wiper arm does.

2008-03-15 Thread E M
It happens. years ago, I had a chevette. I gave it to a friend, and he was
later looking for a couple of parts too. He was told he just missed them,
all went in the crusher. I even tried to take a few friends here into
getting W124s or W126s. If we could all decided on the same car, buy a 4th
and keep it for spares. Take what we want or need off it, and throw a few
bucks in the jar for the next one. Their argument was, we'd probably all
need the same parts. So, I'm the only guy driving a benz. Oh well. Guess
I'll just have to start buying them in pairs as many of you guys do. ;-)

[MBZ] 1983 380SL, Anyone?

2008-03-15 Thread LWB250
Just looked at one in Indianapolis this week. Belongs
to a neighbor of a friend, who's dad is the original
owner.

A cursory glance indicated around 90k on the odometer.
Body is near perfect. It's that nasty gold color,
but all appears to be original. Interior is black,
and is in good shape as is the wood and glass.

Don't know if it has a dual chain or not - I left
instructions on how to check.

If you are interested, let me know and I'll get you in
touch with the owner. I don't know if they are
interested in selling, but it's a possibility they
are.

[MBZ] Sign of the times? 123 chassis

2008-03-15 Thread OK Don
I went to the local salvage yard with the most MBs in the area - I35
Imports - this morning to get a left front fender for a 124 (wrong
color, but $50). The kid at the counter looked out at the 240D I drove
up in, and asked if that wasn't a 240D. I replied that yes, it is, but
it's a 123 chassis, and I need a fender for a 124 chassis. The manager
overheard only the 123 part, and told me that they'd crushed all the
remaining 123 cars 6 months ago, and won't be buying any more. The
majority of the MBs they have are 124, and 126 cars.

SO - Kaleb might be cornering the market on 123s in the OK area

Re: [MBZ] One of the finest sports cars ever made

2008-03-15 Thread LWB250
It's probably on the web somewhere - there was a
commercial for the Karmann Ghia back in the late 60s
where they were tracking along side while one drove
across the Bonneville Salt Flats, with a voice over
about it being the sports car of the VW line, etc.
Suddenly the car comes up on a big banner similar to
the ones they had in those Shell commercials where the
car blows through the banner.

Instead, the Ghia runs up to the banner, and you see
this "bulge" in the banner from the nose of the car,
while in the background you hear the engine revving.

[MBZ] 300SDL, How is the headlight wiper removed?

2008-03-15 Thread Harry Watkins
I have looked in every section of the FSM that I thought it would be
covered. There are three pages discribing how it works. I need to replace
my headlight doors and those instructions only say to remove the headlight
cleaning wiper.

I would never drive nor ride in a car that did not have wipers to clean the
headlights, would you?

If you know the exact pitch (original length of a link) of the chain,
you could place the old chain under tension and measure 100 links and
compare the distance to 100 x pitch.

We used to check motorcycle drive chains for wear by laying them stretched
out flat, measuring them, and then pushing them together and measuring
again. It works better if you degrease them first so that you don't have
oil taking up the slack in the pivots. For a motorcycle chain, 4% is
considered worn out. I would imagine allowable wear for a cam chain is a
lot less than that, perhaps an imperceptible amount when not under tension.
Did you check to see how far behind the crank the cam was before you
took the old chain out?

Is that why nobody lifted a finger to stop this?

Re: [MBZ] Another leaking PS pump

2008-03-15 Thread barry Stark
I went through and replaced the seal and other soft parts on my pump on my
'81 SL. Pretty straight forward. The only real problem I ran into was
removing the big Aluminum plug. I didn't have a socket big enough so I tried
a big Cresent wrench. That's when I found out how soft the flats on the big
plug are. Kinda rounded off the edges but I finally got it off.

The tandem pump is tricky, but unless you have hydraulic suspension,
you have a single pump. I don't think a single pump is that
difficult. I've only done the tandem pump. I know someone on here
has done the single pump, but I don't remember who.
