Re: [MBZ] WW2 escape tunnel

2008-03-23 Thread LarryT
Thanks for that link - I guess I assumed the movie tunnel was full of
extra stuff to make it look better than it was - a little rail track to
carry men and dirt in/out with electric lighting every few feet - all seemed
a bit more than a bunch of prisioners would be able to scrounge while inside
a POW camp! All the wood needed for reinforcing the tunnel must have been a
huge challenge. James Garners character, The Scrounger, must have been
true to history as well - getting a 35mm camera from the guard, etc - it's
an inspiring story of mans ability to overcome challenges. I wonder if S
McQueens character really escaped in order to find out what the surrounding
area was like?

There's a program shown on History Channel from time to time about a
group of Air Force POWs who were held in concentration camps instead of POW
camps - as bad as a POW camp was, the concentration camp was much worse -
obviously. A german air force officer eventually had them transferred to a
POW camp which saved their lives. Cannot imagine what it must have been
like in a concentration camp. So many people exhibited amazing courage back
then and many of their stories are lost forever - many of the French
resistance fighters who were captured endured lengthy torture before being
executed.

The website is really well done - explaining every aspect of the escape
tunnel. Thanks again for the link -

I guess everyone has seen The Great Escape at least once. This is about the
tunnel. It is awesome. The interactive map is also creative, but not nearly
as
much as the fortitude it took to engineer the escape itself. The animation
alone is worth looking at, but the story of the tunnel is amazing.

This was the inspiration for the Steve McQueen movie in the 60's. It is a
fascinating look at a tunnel that was built in a German POW camp. The tunnel
allowed 76 Allied POWs to escape. Check it out. Run your cursor over each
number
and it will tell you about it. Click on the link:

[MBZ] WW2 Escape tunnel

2008-03-23 Thread wilton strickland
I was in USAF aircrew survival training at Stead AFB, NV, in 1962. The POW
museum there had a short section of Harry's track, a trolley, a radio, a
lamp and assorted tools Luft III's prisoners made - truely amazing and
inspirational. 'Show's what one can do when he has to and really
concentrates on it.
'Wonder what happened to the items I saw.

I used to work with and am still in touch with a guy
who was one of a handful of Marine Corps officers that
saw duty in every major battle in the Pacific theater
during WWII. He had buddies that were interred by the
Japanese in the Phillipines and participated in the
death march. I love to sit and listen to him talk
about the battles and what he saw.

Some years back there was a guy on one of our lists
that was a Marine stationed in Japan. He participated
in an annual visit to Iwo Jima where they climbed the
mountain and raised flags to be given to veterans. I
was lucky enough to get one for my buddy, and was
honored to be able to pass it along.

Needless to say, he was really impressed and moved by
the flag (it had a picture of Iwo Jima and the Marines
raising it) and from what I understand it now occupies
a prominent place in his home.

It's guys like this and his buddies who didn't make it
back that we owe much of what we have today to.

Perhaps. If the switch is broken all bets are off as to
whether or not the rest of the system is OK. The lever
actuates four switches: resume, accel, and decel are closed
momentarily to perform their functions, the cancel switch
is opened momentarily to perform its function. If cancel
opens at any other time (like at neutral center) then
the cruise won't work. You need to run the diagnosis
to be sure, but if it _is_ mechanically broken you're
going to probably need a new switch assy. (I fixed one
once, but as I recall it was a tedious thing.)

 See:

Glad you like your SDL, we've really enjoyed ours. (Which is

Re: [MBZ] Given enough time and space, this would be my future

2008-03-23 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
How did I get into Mercedes? Well I have been messing with them for
about 20 years. This got started one time when I went with my
grandmother to look at a then not that old 115 76 240D for sale in the
parking lot of the Walmart. The guy who was selling it was the 2nd
owner, who bought it for his daughter, then she decided she didnt want
it. Anyway, she had it for many years, I took my drivers test in that
car. Then she sold it or let some relative use it or something, anyway,
to make a long story sort this relative ran it out of oil and locked the
motor. He also hit something and damaged the LF fender. So I bought it
from my grandma in '97 and let it sit about a year and I located a parts
car (my first parts car purchase actually) and pulled the locked engine
out of the 240D. The car sat without an engine till about 2 years ago,
when I finally pulled the good engine out of the parts car. Now the car
has been sitting without an engine, waiting for me to drop the good
engine that is sitting in my garage. So basically, I have had the car
11 years now but still have not completed the project. How is that for
being lazy about doing a project!!
