[MBZ] Steering lock-ups - latest update

2008-06-17 Thread Euan
Hi folks

You might recall that I posted here a week or so ago, asking whether
anyone else had experienced occasional momentary steering lock-ups
(hesitations, really) while driving.

My MB fixer (an Indy I believe you would call him) is a great adherent
to the Occam's Razor principle (the simplest answer is likely to be the
right one). He has started off with the assumption that a loose fan belt
is to blame. So far so good. There has been no recurrence of the lock-ups.

I'll report back if there's any progression from this fix.

Cheers

So rather than lock-up, you experienced an increase in steering effort
when the hydraulic pump for the power assisted steering stopped turning?

Heck yes! It has happened to me a few times in the '05 E320 when going over

Very strange.
What the heck is this deal then?

I'm with Dan on that one. If you're a bit adventureous check out the Red
Victorian http://redvic.com/ a bed and breakfast in the Haight Ashbury area. My
wife and I stayed there 3 or 4 years ago. Its a neat little place in a pretty
crazy part of the city. Quite inexpensive too.

As a second I'm in Burbank right now, just outside of LA and all the movie

Can't go wrong with San Francisco.

So much to do/see along with easy day trips (if you
want them) it's hard not to have SFO at the top of
your list.

Re: [MBZ] What would you do if diesel/gas cost $10/g - various garden varmints

2008-06-17 Thread Bill R
I'll keep the rabbits. We had those very ugly faced ducks down South. I
didn't mind them drinking out of our small fountain by the front door, but
then they would hop in [no way they actually fit] and poop in the water and
all over the walk and porch every day. Learned to despise those critters.
At least the rabbits poop in the weeds and can't get their mouths through
the anti-rabbit fence on the grapes. Better the devil I know ... Now those
bushy-tailed rodents with the good PR firm are another story. I had to put
builders cloth [?? small squared wire] over the soffit vents around the
entire house to keep them out of the attic, then repaint the wood trim every
place they made or tried to make a 'door' through the screen. I am no
longer a fan of the vermin - except perhaps next to the mashed potatoes.

That's what ducks are for - great bug eaters. Of course, they also
like to eat most of the same veggies you do, and will think of grapes

 Maybe we could
engineer a rabbit to eat bugs...

Re: [MBZ] lizard update in florida

2008-06-17 Thread Tom Hargrave
I have owned 17 Mercedes to date and I have never gotten better than sticker
mileage with any of them. My latest - a 300SDL, gets a consistent 22 MPG in
town and 25 MPG on the road.

My oldest Son consistently gets much better mileage than sticker but he's an
extremely conservative driver. He would consistently get 29 - 30 MPG out of
the 77 300D we used to own where I would get 24 MPG. Problem is, I can't
stand riding with him!

If you are getting much better than sticker then I suggest that you are a
very conservative driver, the differential has been swapped out causing
mis-calculation or you don't know how to accurately calculate MPG.

Speaking of MPG, I noticed that even though gas diesel have been rising,
the spread between the two has not increased. If the spread stays the same
as prices rise, it will cheaper to drive the diesel again. I guess I'll be
putting the 300SDL back on the road.

Here's the numbers:
City
Jeep = 17 MPG highway = $0.24 / mile at $4.08 / gal
300SDL = 22 MPG highway = $0.22 / mile at $4.76 / gal

Highway
Jeep = 20 MPG highway = $0.20 / mile at $4.08 / gal
300SDL = 25 MPG highway = $0.19 / mile at $4.76 / gal

I'd get a job closer to home, I'm probably paying $5000-$6000 a year just to
commute now.
Enlarge our garden, we've got something like 60sq/ft now. I'm intensive
gardening so theres a lot less work since the garden plants crowd out the weeds.

I'd start keeping rabbits for meat. You can easily keep rabbits in a small yard
and grow most of their food.
We're already looking to switch grocery stores. The IGA around the corner from
our house is alot smaller and a little more expensive but we can walk there.

keep the house warmer in the Summer and cooler in the Winter, start charging

walk to shop, 3 blocks. Turn my south yard into an algae farm and make BioD

Negative on the very conservative driver, I flog the daylights out of my cars.
My 240D got its best tank at 65mph but it killed me to drive that speed for
that long.

Negative on not knowing how to calculate the mpg, distance traveled / gallons
used = mpg its pretty easy. I've got some fairly substantial spreadsheets.

That said I don't have working AC, I don't idle the cars much at all. I don't
putter around town. I keep tire pressure on the high side and don't carry alot
of stuff with me. I go someplace and then I come back, theres very little

I have owned 17 Mercedes to date and I have never gotten better than sticker
mileage with any of them. My latest - a 300SDL, gets a consistent 22 MPG in
town and 25 MPG on the road.

My oldest Son consistently gets much better mileage than sticker but he's
an
extremely conservative driver.

Speaking of MPG, I noticed that even though gas amp; diesel have been rising,
the spread between the two has not increased. If the spread stays the same
as prices rise, it will cheaper to drive the diesel again. I guess I'll be
putting the 300SDL back on the road.

Here's the numbers:
City
Jeep = 17 MPG highway = $0.24 / mile at $4.08 / gal
300SDL = 22 MPG highway = $0.22 / mile at $4.76 / gal

Highway
Jeep = 20 MPG highway = $0.20 / mile at $4.08 / gal
300SDL = 25 MPG highway = $0.19 / mile at $4.76 / gal

my uncle came to america as layos helmeci in the early 60s. he was a
doctor working out of mt sinai hospital in nyc. another doctor there
advised him that if he didn't change his name to something people could
relate to, he would be hindering his career. my uncle, an ambitious man,
couldn't stand the idea of having to live on the 22nd floor instead of the
penthouse of his building on the east side, asked the more senior physician
what name he might suggest. at the time, the other man was reading a book
by lillian hellman and thought that was a good name. henceforth my uncle
was dr larry hellman, and even though he did move up to the duplex penthouse
on the east side, he never got out of the habit of shopping the fur

Yes. As a matter of fact that would be the type of case we defend - IF by
type you mean someone suing an municipality or other governmental entity.
This case sounds very strange. I don't understand why the city would have
this policy and I certainly don't understand why they would announce it as
their policy. But, if I was defending it, I don't get to consider my own
values, I represent the client. I am not very impressed with the
 complaint.

Did you notice that the plaintiff's attorney is from a firm called Nelson
 and Lawless?

I think if my name was Lawless, I would not be a lawyer. Just think if he
was a Judge? Judge Lawless, sounds like a Batman villain.

2008-06-17 Thread Jim Cathey
 1) Can someone please advise me on how to remove the driver's seat
 center
armrest on a 1983 300TD? Does the large button that releases the
 armrest pop/pry off?

Some of them come off from the inside of the seat frame. I don't
think I've ever removed one with the latching button, the ones
that just pivot have a pry-out plastic cap that covers the big
nut.

 2) When removing a power window regulator on the same car, does the
 glass
need to be completely or partially lowered?

Yes, in order to release the bolts that hold the glass to the
regulator frame. Then I think you have to push the glass back
up out of the way.

Re: [MBZ] OT: suing government

2008-06-17 Thread LarryT
At last count I believe 40 states now have Shall Issue regulations
meaning the govt must issue if the applican passes the background test and
takes the training course. BTW, the training course is very helpful for
someone not very familiar with guns. My wife for one. Although she had
fired guns in the past she was surprised to find how difficult it is to hit
a target at ~20' with a handgin small enough to be easily concealed. Her
past shooting irons had 6 or longer barrels which are much easier to aim.
But she passed the test -
;-)

The latest numbers are :
Thirty-six states have shall issue laws, requiring that carry permits be
issued to applicants who meet uniform standards established by the state
legislature. Three have fairly-administered discretionary-issue carry permit
systems. One, Vermont, respects the right to carry without a permit. Alaska,
one of the shall issue states, has its permit system for the purpose of
permit-reciprocity with other states, and also adopted a no-permit-required
law in 2003.
. There are 10 non-RTC states. Eight have restrictively-administered
discretionary-issue systems. Only two-Illinois and Wisconsin-have no permit
system and prohibit carrying.

The above quoted from www.nra-ila-org/issues/factsheets/read.aspx?ID=18

Re: [MBZ] Steering lock-ups - latest update

2008-06-17 Thread R A Bennell
We had a similar situation with a Honda Accord when it rained hard and the
power steering belt got wet. I guess it
would slip when wet and leave the driver with the feeling that something was
wrong with the steering.

I also recall driving an old Ranchero that belonged to an employer many years
ago. I was turning from one street
onto another when I thought something broke in the steering. Good thing I was
not going very fast as I cut a really
sloppy corner but did not hit the curb. What happened was that the engine
stalled so of course I did not have power
brakes either. A bit disturbing at the time.

So rather than lock-up, you experienced an increase in steering effort
when the hydraulic pump for the power assisted steering stopped turning?

Yes. As a matter of fact that would be the type of case we defend - IF by type
you mean someone suing an
municipality or other governmental entity. This case sounds very strange. I
don't understand why the city would
have this policy and I certainly don't understand why they would announce it as
their policy. But, if I was
defending it, I don't get to consider my own values, I represent the client. I
am not very impressed with the
complaint.

Did you notice that the plaintiff's attorney is from a firm called Nelson and

I think if my name was Lawless, I would not be a lawyer. Just think if he was

What the heck is this deal then?

Interesting... My E320 has never done any such thing. When making a
high speed turn it seems to stiffen up though. ie, making a left across
a 4-lane intersection without slowing down. Other than that it is nice
and smooth.

The 2.5T had this problem when I had the wrong PS pump on it. The
original went bad, and when I got one off of Kaleb it was for a
different chassis. Long story short, the different chassis have
gearboxes that have different operating pressures. The pump I got from
Kaleb was for W126 which had a ~80 bar operating pressure. The one for
the W124 was ~110 bar. You would usually only notice when turning into
a parking spot... the steering felt like you were trying to turn the
tires with the engine off and in a parking lot. Proper PS pump fixed
the problem.

I really doubt thats the problem with your E320 though ;)

2008-06-17 Thread andrew strasfogel
Thanks, Jim.

I don't look forward to messing with the seat frame, but that does sound
more logical. On my 111 coupe one simply pries off the cover, and there is
a circular brass compression (adjusting) nut with four slots that requirees
a special tool to remove/tighten.

Some of them come off from the inside of the seat frame. I don't
think I've ever removed one with the latching button, the ones
that just pivot have a pry-out plastic cap that covers the big
 nut.

  2) When removing a power window regulator on the same car, does the

Yes, in order to release the bolts that hold the glass to the
regulator frame. Then I think you have to push the glass back

City

Jeep = 17 MPG highway = $0.24 / mile at $4.08 / gal

300SDL = 22 MPG highway = $0.22 / mile at $4.76 / gal

Highway

Jeep = 20 MPG highway = $0.20 / mile at $4.08 / gal

300SDL = 25 MPG highway = $0.19 / mile at $4.76 / gal

[MBZ] Antenna replacement

2008-06-17 Thread Curt Raymond
Has anybody bought one of those Hirchman OE replacement antennas on eBay?

The guy says OE but not OEM replacement ie its a generic fit from an OE
manufacturer.
A new OEM replacement from Rusty is $197ish, the guy on eBay is like $50
shipped.
I took the antenna from my 240D apart but its in tough shape so I figured I'd
replace the one in my 190D and use the parts from both of the bad ones to maybe
make one good one...

So I got the antenna, its nice enough and the guy sent instructions on how to
add it to my car. I'm gone for 8 more days so I'm just trying to figure out the
installation in my head before I do it...

[MBZ] 124 evapectomy

2008-06-17 Thread Wilton Strickland
Here are a coupla post op photos of interior.

Still to do: Hook up water and Freon pipes and RR dryer and compressor
manifold.

'Had only one little mishap that I know of so far: When I was trying to
press one of the little spring clips (~1/2 X 1/4) back in place on outside
of the evap/heat exchanger box, my thumb slipped, and clip went flying;
'heard it hit the carpet (real Persian rug) somewhere behind me. 'Looked
for it quite a while, but the color patterns on the rug make it hard to find
little things like that. Sometimes it helps to lay a flashlight down on the
rug and sweep it slowly back and forth like a RADAR beam to be able to find
something like that, but no luck this time. 'Probably find it when I hear
it in the vacuum cleaner hose. 'Used a tie-wrap/zip-tie in place of the
clip.

Good point, Jim. Apologies if I caused confusion.

These lock-ups are certainly detectable but only momentary. So, it's
hard to describe precisely what's happened. For that fleeting moment,
the wagon is operating independently of my steering intentions, in a
fashion not dissimilar to hitting a patch of ice on the road while
turning. In this case, there is no loss of traction, of course.

A brief failure of power-steering input would produce an effect similar
to a momentary lock-up. 'Hesitation' is a more ambiguous term for the
phenomenon.

Some rental car companies are now charging $8.00 a gallon if you

Be warned! Do not turn a rental car in without topping up or having

I was wondering if that might be another 1602 or 2002, when did they change
the tail lights, 1975? Certainly older than that.
The orange Ghia looks pretty promising, certainly more solid than most of

Do you think this first picture is a Stude?

Also I did not think they changed wheels and headlights on the W126 until 86

Exactly. As power to many of the more electronically-filled items
goes _through_ the OVP relay, and as the OVP gets flakey inside, you
can have problems with any/all of these subsystems. When the OVP
actually does its job it blows the fuse that's on top of it.
Nothing subtle about it.

I was wondering if that might be another 1602 or 2002, when did they

The orange Ghia looks pretty promising, certainly more solid than most of
 the cars depicted.

Re: [MBZ] Steering lock-ups - latest update

2008-06-17 Thread Jim Cathey
A brief failure of power-steering input would produce an effect similar
to a momentary lock-up. 'Hesitation' is a more ambiguous term for the
 phenomenon.

Unless you've actually experienced a steering lockup.
Then you wouldn't be confusing the terms at all.
Without power assist a PS steering system will still
let you steer, but with a lot more effort. With a
lockup, you can't. And you could well die as a result.

[MBZ] vacuum pump assembly question

2008-06-17 Thread Allan Streib
So -- I took my vacuum pump apart to install the repair kit parts.

In the main pump body there is a brass adapter for the connection of
the vacuum line. Behind or in this adapter seems to be some kind of
check valve mechanism.

I have three parts that came out of the bore where that adapter
threads in. A small disc with three little tabs spaced equally around
the perimiter, a small spring, and a small piston-like piece.

I can't see any way to reinsert these and have them stay in place.
They seemed to just be sort of loose in there when I took the pump
apart but that sure does not seem right. Can anyone describe the
correct order of assembly of these pieces?

That's it. And a fuse on top. And, occasionally, crystallizing

BTW, I've read a coupla reports that the ducts on each side of the center
console were very hard to RR. I found them very EASY to do. Each is held
by 2 screws - one on the floor about midway the duct, the other on top of
the duct under front edge of seat. Remove those 2 screws and pull up on the
end of the duct under front edge of the seat, and duct detaches from the
section of duct under seat. Then unplug top end of duct from evap box. On
re-installation, plug top end of duct into evap box, and push/jiggle rear
end of the duct downward back into place (meshed) with duct under front edge
of seat and re-install the 2 screws. Ya don't need to loosen the duct under
the seat.

Re: [MBZ] vacuum pump assembly question

2008-06-17 Thread Allan Streib
Hm, that was supposed to have the following text as well

It has been a year or three since I rebuilt my vacuum pump, but it
sounds like a fallen-apart check valve? Didn't the kit come with
 new valves?

The old valves are all intact. These parts came out of the bore where
the threaded adapter for the main vacuum line attachment is. I've
attached a picture, sorry for the lousy quality but a cell phone is
all I have at the moment.

Re: [MBZ] 91 350SDL tac

Oh - one more thing.. The idle speed changed when it kicked in or out.
Don't recall which was a higher rpm. If you were stopped at a light
with the brake on when it changed, you could feel the car hunkering
down or releasing a bit as the engine put more or less umph to the
transmission.

If it helps - when my overvoltage relay was acting up the tach went to

The tachometer signal goes through the overvoltage relay - at least it

am curious why the overvoltage relay needs a tach signal and what it
 does with it.

It doesn't use it at all. But the (expensive) electronics involved
with the tach signal are powered through the OVP.

Inside the typical OVP relay (such as found on Ethelred, the 380SL)
is the expected relay, a heat-sinked power Zener diode, and a resistor.
That's it. And a fuse on top. And, occasionally, crystallizing
solder joints. That particular relay will blow its fuse at 25 volts.

Well this photo from Rusty's catalog seems to show that little
three-tabbed disc inside the body of the adapter...

Guess somehow mine came apart. I'll see if I can get it back
together. Perhaps this was really my problem all along

Don't recall which was a higher rpm.

It would have gone higher during the malfunction. The car's set
to idle very high as a fail-safe, and the idle control system
(powered through the OVP) drags it down to where it should be.

Re: [MBZ] What would you do if diesel/gas cost $10/g

2008-06-17 Thread MG
Bill, all you have to do is get a chicken and it will eat the bugs. As
for getting the rabbits, the only really quiet way in a neighborhood is
to use live traps and then tell people that you are releasing them in
the country.

Hi Manfred - If you can do it quietly and while my granddaughter is in
Alaska you are welcome to the ones around here. Next door neighbor is
growing a small farm in his front yard and the rabbits love it. I
  fenced
them away from my grapes, but now the bugs are getting them. Maybe we
  could
engineer a rabbit to eat bugs...
