I'm not a  wizard at this, maybe some help out there?

I bought a new Hitachi 250GB hard drive from Tiger.  It came with no
instructions at all.
I want to use it as a slave.
I installed it, WinXP found it on the first boot, or so the little
pop-up said.

Now it's no where in my system, I can't find it ??

I can find it in Control Panel/devices  Looks good there.

I'm sure I have jumpers wrong, I can find no info.

Suggestions?

Search on Hitachi's website for the manual on the disk. That will tell you
where the jumpers need to be.

Shut down the computer and boot into your BIOS screen. Look for two disks
listed, one of which may be the Hitachi. If both disks show up, your
jumpers are correct.

Before XP will allow you to use it, you need to format it and then tell
the system where to mount it. I've done it in the past, but I don't recall
the steps. As I recall, the information about the steps was hard to
locate.

Feh, they're not *that* big. A 500kW standby set is
probably the size of a 300D. Get up to 2000kW and
you're talking small shed, maybe.

Block heaters are required by code on most stationary
standby sets, even if they are indoors in a heated
area. Because they have to come up to operating speed
(1800 rpm) and assume as much as 100% load within 10
seconds, having them close to operating temperature
(around 125F for most block heaters) lessens the wear
and tear on the engine when it starts up. It also
allows them to start faster.

Most cell sites (nodes) have battery backup that is
good for several hours at full load. Most of the
larger carriers, like ATT, Verizon and Sprint either
have small propane powered standby sets at their sites
or are putting them in. Because of the increased
subscriber base for phone service with many cable
providers, there is a push for them to have backup
power for their systems as well. I worked on a
project at Kohler that used a 5kW propane powered set
that provided battery charging to a cable system UPS
that was part of a distribution cabinet.

One of our biggest customers is ATT, who currently
has a national program through Generac that is placing
standby power at all of their sites. In Indiana alone
that is nearly 300 sites, and we maintain all of
them

Re: [MBZ] O/T Hitachi Hard Drive

2008-06-21 Thread dave walton
There are two places to try right-clicking under disk manager. The
larger block that represents that data portion of the drive and the
smaller square just to the left that represents the header info for
the drive. Try right-clicking on the header area and see what comes
up. You may get an option to Import Foreign Disk, if you do, click
it. You can then format or whatever. If not, let us know what you get.
You may also need to right click the data area to assign a drive
letter.

FYI - if you work with partitions larger then 2Tb, you need to convert
the disk to a GPT disk (right-click the header) or else you can't get
to all of it. Windows does not like to install itself to a GPT volume,
so you will need a separate boot volume. Most intelligent disk
controllers allow you do that via their firmware.

I think that's the case... I have noticed that the BMW and Mercedes

attract aren't the ones interested in cars too old to have a warranty.

From Kaleb's Carfax, it looks like it could be one owner who just

If they were V12s they were probably in the range of
1000kW to 1500kW. Oil circulation (prelube) systems
are just that - they maintain oil pressure in the

used on sets with very critical loads

8 or 10 exhausts are probably right - two per unit,
one for each bank of cylinders. They probably feed
into a Y pipe and then into a large silencer
(muffler) hanging from the ceiling.

Re: [MBZ] O/T Hitachi Hard Drive

2008-06-21 Thread LWB250
If you have a fairly new machine/BIOS and the proper
cable, leaving all the jumpers off should put it in
cable select mode, meaning the BIOS looks at it and
sorts everything out on startup.

Of course, if you were using a SATA drive this would
be moot

Re: [MBZ] June 6, 1944

2008-06-21 Thread LarryT
Sorry it took me so long to follow the link and see the photos - the 1st
photo that appears is an incredible view of what the men faced once the big
door was dropped - it looks like the German positions are a mile away - it's
amazing that *any* men made it across all that open land!

While the smoke probably helped the men avoid some enemy fire it also
made it tougher for the Navy ships to use their guns against the pillboxes -
destroyers finally closed near the beach and risked grounding to allow them
to fire nearly pointblank into the pilboxes. Surviving Germans said they
had no chance against that firepower - the pillboxes were designed to
withstnd bombing attacks and land attacks but having a 5 gun firing
firectly into the slits gave them *no* chance. Thanks to the destroyers
many enemy positions were destroyed allowing the ground pounders to advance.

Re: [MBZ] June 6, 1944

2008-06-21 Thread Wilton Strickland
One of my brother's men on Omaha beach, seventeen-year-old US Navy Seaman
Bob Guere, in less than 30 minutes after he had been drafted into the
infantry by an Army colonel on the beach, single-handedly destroyed one of
those pillboxes by crawling on his belly to directly beneath one of the gun
slits and tossing an explosive satchel through it. For his actions, he was
awarded the Silver Star. At the end of my interview with him on Sep 11,
'01, (yes, the day of the WTC destruction) he reached into his shirt pocket
and pulled out a photo while saying, Here I am standing in front of that
same pillbox on Jun 6 of this year.

I had the very distinct honor and pleasure of interviewing several of my
brother's men and several of the equally brave Coasties who delivered them
to the beach on that fateful day of June 6, 1944, the memory of which should
make all Americans, British, Canadians and other allies stand tall with
pride. I was also highly honored and deeply humbled to present the
Presidential Unit Citation to members of the unit, 6th Naval Beach
Battalion, who had not yet received it - 57 years overdue. I was ten years
old when those brave men stormed that beach. I'm appalled that it took 57
years and a 67-year-old RETIRED officer of the US Air Force to officially
tell them, Thank you.

Still and forever humbled, Wilton

But the brick of Remington subsonics I bought don't
seem all that quiet. They are strong enough to cycle the action in my
Marlin 60 and my friend's 10/22, but from a few feet away I can't really
tell a lot of difference between the subs and the high velocity stuff in
the Marlin, the Ruger, or even my 26 target rifle. They go bang
(unlike CCI mini caps, which go pfft), but there's no supersonic crack
echoing back from the woods like I'd get with full power 22LR.

I think he added a zero, after 100 yards .22LR performance drops RAPIDLY. I
forget the drop at 100 yards but its substantial. At 300 yards you'd really be
just lobbing bullets toward the target in a huge arc.

The CCI subsonics are vastly superior to the Remington or were 10 years ago the
last time I played with them a lot. In the early '90s when I was shooting a lot
Remington had something like a 10% misfire rate where other brands were 1% or
less. When I was shooting smallbore target competitively I was firing around
1000 rounds a week, 10% was totally unacceptable... CCI was selling some .22
rounds that were so cheap they were loose packed but were much more reliable
and accurate than more expensive Remington ammo...

For fun subsonic try

Thanks Mitch!  Those Remington 22 LRs look great!  One of the comments from

buyer says I have hit cow patties easily out to 300 yards

I never imagind using CPs  for target practice!  He goes on to dscribe the
splt being louder than the round firing!

Also, at $3.50 for 50 they're pretty inexpensive -

[MBZ] Still O/T Hitachi Hard Drive

You may also need to right click the data area to assign a drive

FYI - if you work with partitions larger then 2Tb, you need to convert
the disk to a GPT disk (right-click the header) or else you can't get
to all of it. Windows does not like to install itself to a GPT volume,
so you will need a separate boot volume. Most intelligent disk
controllers allow you do that via their firmware.

I can find it in Control Panel/devices Looks good there.

Re: [MBZ] dial tone

2008-06-21 Thread Tom Hargrave
I used to work on the Telco equipment at Browns Ferry Nuclear Power Plant.
Our main switch, a Dimension 2000 (we called it the Demented 2000) supported
1700 extensions. The system ran on a stack of Edison batteries that were
housed maintained in the next bay.

The phone system was actually powered by the batteries 24/7. The batteries
were kept charged by a huge charger that was backed up by a generator set.
This configuration guaranteed 100% uptime since a loss of line power would
just stop the batteries from charging.

The batteries were huge clear glass cells that were wired in series to make
48 volts. There were two banks of batteries so that one could be taken off
line while the other was serviced.

Our second modern system was a System 75 that supported an additional 750
phone lines. This system had a more conventional UPS that measured 4' square
by 4' tall.

Re: [MBZ] dial tone

2008-06-21 Thread LWB250
Understand that the holiest of holies, dial tone, was
a sacred thing to the telcos for many years. I'm not
sure where this came from, but working with a lot of
independent telcos years ago, I had it explained to me
that the worst, absolute worst thing that could ever
happen to you as a service provider was to not have a
dial tone. The level of reliability was 100%.
Period. Nothing less was acceptable.

As a result of this thinking, the telcos were set up
years ago to run on 48 volts DC, the origin of this
being unknown to me personally. However, that's why
when you go into a CO (central office) or switch,
you'll find a large room, in some in a major exchange
the whole floor of a building, filled with nicad wet
cells set up in series-parallel on huge racks.
Utility power is used to run the inverters to keep the
batteries charged, and runs over the top of the
system during normal operation, that is, the inverters
provide the power while charging or maintaining the
charge on the batteries. Should utility power fail,
the load simply shifts to the batteries and there is
no interruption to the customer, or (G-d forbid) a
loss of dial tone.

If there are generators on site, they are set up to
provide power to the inverters, and will power them up
during an outage to keep the batteries from
discharging. In a lot of cases they will set up a
time delay on the generator start up so that it's not
coming on until the outage is sustained for a short
time, maybe 10-30 minutes. regularly discharging the
batteries is a good thing, and in some cases they'll
even have resistive load banks that can be applied to
the battery banks on a scheduled basis to load test
them. You certainly don't want to find a dead cell
when there's a power outage...

The telcos I have worked at typically had 18-24 hours
of run time on batteries alone, possibly more
depending on the load on the system. This gives them
lots of time to come up with alternative sources of
power in the event of a catastrophic event
(sometimes.) Look closely at the outside of the CO
buildings and in many cases you'll see a big
Crouse-Hinds connector for connecting a trailer
mounted genset. This is very common amongst the Baby
Bells, most of whom maintain a large fleet of
generators spread out across their service area, ready
to be dispatched in the event of an emergency.

[MBZ] Another reason to stay home...

2008-06-21 Thread RELNGSON
NEW YORK -- United Airlines said Friday it will start requiring minimum stays
for nearly all domestic coach seats beginning in October. It also is raising
its cheapest fares by as much as $90 one-way.
The second-largest U.S. carrier said the moves are among a number of changes,
including flight and job cutbacks, it is making to combat record high fuel
prices. The Chicago-based airline has been among the industry's most aggressive
in pushing fares and fees higher in recent months, and those efforts have
often been matched by other carriers. The industry is scrambling to raise
revenue
in a fight to forestall what is projected to be a record multibillion loss.
Starting Oct. 6, most of United's economy-class fares will require a one- to
three-night or weekend-night minimum stay, spokeswoman Robin Urbanski said. The
policy does not apply to fliers in other classes. The new rules are bound to be
unpopular with business travelers who prefer to catch a flight out early in
the morning so they can be back home in time for dinner.
They'll push back big time, said Mike Boyd, a Colorado-based aviation
consultant. It's one thing to simply raise fares. It's quite another to do it
by
imposing restrictions that appear to make it harder to conveniently fly. Major
carriers scrapped most minimum-stay rules at the start of the decade.

back in the day. You haven't lived until you have to clean up the mess
resulting
from some knucklehead upping the charge rate on the batteries causing them to
boil over. Took the paint off the racks, the floors and ventilated my pants.

The telco batteries and diesels I referred to were probably put in service in
the twenties since they were in the sub-basement of the then Pacific Tel
Tel Main CO which was built about that time. I saw it only a few times since
the
room was off limits but the engine was about twenty feet long and about eight
feet high with a walkway along the side for service. Much like the ship
engines of today. The masonry and concrete building was half a block on each
side
and ten stories high and when the diesel was started for it's weekly test, you
could hear it (and feel it, I thought) throughout the structure.

I did something similar - I had the engine completely disassembled at the
time for a rebuild put the new chain in the vise where I use hammer

This was after I had my wife stop by a MB dealer and ask a technician to use

connecting link on while it's on the engine and then peen the connector.

that I would have. It's irritating when something so simple gets twisted
because he didn't think I knew what I was talking about. I've probably
rebuild a *lot* more MB engines than he has!.

[MBZ] What gives with the idle control valve hose?

2008-06-21 Thread Peter Frederick
This is getting annoying -- while on my trip a couple weeks ago, not
only did the rear ffex disk give up the ghost (my fault, should have
checked it), but the car re-aquired that annoying sluggish off the
line performance and rough idle symptomatic of a vacuum leak.

Finally got a chance to poke around today, and damned if that hose
from the idle control valve to the manifold is split at the idle
control valve nipple. This is the THIRD hose I've put on there is
six years, no way they should fail in 12000 miles (or less, it's my
mother's car and she puts maybe 5000 miles a year on it).

This is the real PITA hose to replace, too. Easy to install the last
time, as I was replacing the boot on the throttle body, too, but I'm
tired of this.

I put a hose clamp on it for the time being, but I think when I put a
new one on, I'm going to use the clamp to start with.

The hose always splits down the mold seam, defective manufacture?

[MBZ] 240D manny tranny front shaft - clutch installation aid

I have the short, front section of the central shaft from the original manny
tranny that was in my '80 240D. It protrudes from the front of the tranny
through the clutch and into center of the flywheel. I used an identical
piece 23 years ago to quickly and easily align a new clutch while bolting it
to the flywheel. You can slip the front of the shaft through the clutch and
the short, front nub into the flywheel, bolt the clutch in place, slip the
shaft section out toward the rear and slip the tranny right in place very
easily.

If somebody'll send me a check for $10, I'll send ya this shaft section -
you'll literally get the shaft - no kidding.

[MBZ] Timing chain replacement/irritating twists

2008-06-21 Thread Wilton Strickland
Fifty years ago, I was at home from Nebraska for a few days and sent wife
into town coupla miles to buy a 12 flat bastard file - 'planned to sharpen
rotary mower blade. Guy at hardware store asked her, What's he gonna do
with it? She drove all the way back to say, He wants to know what ya
gonna do with it? After she heard my few choice words, she went back and
got the file.

Twenty years ago, using chain saw on a Sat afternoon to cut many trees,
bushes, etc., in our new-to-us yard, I asked wife (same fine young lady) to
go to a service station 'bout two blocks away any get the cheapest quart of
motor oil they have - 'planned to use it to lub chain. Wife came back and
said, They don't have any. I said, What, a service station doesn't have
motor oil!!?? She said, They said they don't have any .

I jumped in the car and rushed to the service station; walked in and asked,
Do you guys REALLY not have any motor oil? Service station guy said, She
said you're gonna use it in a chain saw. I replied, I AM. That's why I
want a quart of the cheapest you have - to lub chain!

The airlines, who have NEVER made money, even with the massive

The idea is to stabilize return trips and reduce the number of one-

less passenger makes a difference as the plane uses about the same

Sure, the important thing is to KNOW when the bullet hasn't come out of the
barrel...

For a cheap rifle, just about anything in a bolt action will do nicely. Single
shot rifles will tend to be less expensive... New England Arms makes a nice
break action single shot but the stock sights are ABYSMAL. Dad has one, the
front sight is really fat, I was trying to shoot a squirrel with it last month
and I could even SEE the stupid squirrel beyond the front sight. I missed him
twice before I switched to a Polish made training rifle with which I dispatched
the stupid squirrel on the first shot...

My Dad has been collecting boys rifles for a couple years now. He's
specializing in the very small inexpensive ones that could be bought like in
the back of a comic book. The spread in quality and features is amazing...

If the warning is ignored, and the Colibri CB bullet doesn't leave the
barrel of the rifle, couldn't you just push it back, or out the front
(depending on the rifle) with a cleaning rod? Then the only risk is
remembering to verify that the barrel is clear before loading the next
round (?).

The only time I had an MB dealer rebuild an engine [dealer in Jacksonville

much shot any feeling I had of how great dealer work might be.

I did something similar - I had the engine completely disassembled at the

continued with the assembly.

This was after I had my wife stop by a MB dealer and ask a technician to use

connecting link on while it's on the engine and then peen the connector.

Re: [MBZ] Another reason to stay home

2008-06-21 Thread Peter Frederick
Well, there is a solution (actually, the same one I've been
suggesting for 30 years or more)

Stop building roads, of any kind, at once. Spend the highway trust
fund money on de-suburbanization -- for an example, take a look at
any community near a large city built before 1948 -- a main street
with a commercial district and the mass transit line (bus, trolley,
etc) down the middle, with housing varying from inexpensive mulitple
unit near the main street to high dollar large lot single family at
the outside.

Require banks to quit financing new construction at better rates than
existing homes (if you haven't noticed, the vast majority of
subprime loans are for city housing)

Stop zoning for parking. Anywhere, any place, any time.

Nationalize the railbeds (not the railroads, just the rails
themselves -- note that the Railroads currently pay property tax on
the roadbed) and build a rational one (sorta like the interstate
highway system instead of the hodge-podge we have). Set up a
national passenger service that actually moves passengers for transit
instead of an excursion service. This requires high speed, concrete
set (not wooden crossties in gravel) rail bed. Another use for the
highway trust fund money.

Start taxing fuel use, increasing it rather steeply until it's $5-6 a
gallon.

Require zoning law changes so that new construction MUST be
contiguous with current mass transit. No more isolated suburbs, no
more way out in the country businesses -- we ain't gonna be driving
to work any more, we HAVE to be able to use mass transit.

A very large and annually repeating severance tax for converting farm
land to any other use.

I'm hoping that the severity of the fuel crisis will finally persuade
people that one should NOT take advice about zoning and community
development from people who make money off urban sprawl.

Probably not a snowball's chance in the bad place any of this will
happen, though, we all worship the free market

Peter

[MBZ] OT Seating A New Lawn Tractor Tire

2008-06-21 Thread Rick Knoble
How the hell do you get one of them fat lawn tractor tires to seat on the rim?
I am clueless here. The rim is like 8 inches wide and the tire beads are about
four inches apart. I have tried putting a ratcheting strap around the tire, but
I need to figure out how to get the beads apart so it will hold air and

Re: [MBZ] OT Seating A New Lawn Tractor Tire

2008-06-21 Thread mlh

Keep cranking that ratchet strap. The more you tighten it, the wider the
beads get. I use a locking tire chuck so I can wiggle the tire on the rim
while the air is rushing in. Sometimes it helps to remove the valve core
so the air flows faster.

Are you using the same size tire that
the factory intended for that rim?

If all else fails, inflating
an inner tube inside the tire is a great way to spread the beads.

[MBZ] Diesel Primer Pump

2008-06-21 Thread David Hemsley

Hi folks,

I have an 84 300DT, it has a long history of air in the fuel line challenges.

I have replaced the tank strainer, the filters and the fuel lines. It ran
great for about two months. (Can anyone tell me the logic/engineering
reasoning behind a cigar hose by the way?)

Now, I am having the same challenges again. I am thinking that perhaps it is
the primer pump that is bad.

I notice that this primer pump is one of the newer types. I don't care for it
and want to go back to the older type.

Can I revert back to the old type by simply changing the pump or do I have to
change out the entire primer pump assembly as well?

For those of you that provided information concerning the fuel types and
quantities for my 85 300CDT I surely want to thank all of you.

Re: [MBZ] Diesel Primer Pump

2008-06-21 Thread Peter Frederick
The cigar hose is designed to dampen the fuel pressure surges from
the lift pump and smooth the flow of fuel back to the tank. It also
keeps the steel line from drumming on the frame and driving you nuts.

The whole assembly of the hand pump simply screws on. I suspect
you are missing the copper seal, or it didn't seat properly when
installed. What's not to like about a pump that works when you need
it and doesn't dump fuel oil all over you (and leak, usually
instantly) when you unscrew it? Besides, you will have to install a
used one, only the improved type (sealed with o-rings instead of a
leather piston seal) is available new.

Take it off (a crow-foot works best, at least on the W115 chassis,
you may have more room) and replace the copper seal before tossing
the pump. The thumb pumps rarely leak.

Correction: May 4, 2006

A front-page article on April 25 about seating options that airlines are
considering to accommodate more passengers in economy class referred
incorrectly to the concept of carrying passengers standing up with
harnesses holding them in position. During preparation of the article, The
Times's questions to one aircraft manufacturer, Airbus, were imprecise and
did not make it clear that the reporter was interested in standing-room
seats. As a result, the article said the company would not specifically
comment on the upright-seating proposal. The company now says that while
it researched that idea in 2003, it has since abandoned it. A correction
of the article appeared on this page on Tuesday. It should have
acknowledged that if The Times had correctly understood the history of the
proposal, the article would have qualified it, and would not have appeared
on Page A1.

Peter,

Thank you for the great information. Yours is the first explanation of the
cigar hose that makes sense to me.

I was thinking about changing over to the primer pump as presented at
MercedesSource here:
http://www.mercedessource.com/node/4773

The current primer pump does leak diesel on me when I am attempting to prime
the fuel system, which is why I think the primer pump is the latest culprit in
the air/fuel challenge. Lastly, I just feel more at ease having to turn
something on or off (turning the dial knob) when either using it or not doing
so.

Let me know what you think about this possible replacement primer pump please.

[MBZ] California

I had to go to California on Thursday, just got back this morning. While I was
there, I had to fill up my rental car. Gas was $4.68 a gallon. Premium was

My rental car was a 2008 Toyota Camry and I have to admit, I really enjoyed

I was in Orange County and it seemed like there were Mercedes everywhere old

Re: [MBZ] Diesel Primer Pump

2008-06-21 Thread Peter Frederick
The new style is a vast improvement. It is a tube within a tube
sealed with 0-rings and contains a spring. You just push down on it
when you need to prime, no unscrewing, etc. The check valves in the
lift pump (which is really just a close fitting rod in a hole with an
o-ring seal that moves in and out) work like normal so the fuel
pushes through the filter.

If your hand pump leaks fuel out, it's leaking air in when seated.
Replace it. The fancy pump shown is not an improvement over the
thumb pump, which does NOT have a shaft seal as it doesn't screw
down. Mine has never leaked, although I've only had ti for 12 years.

Toyota has always made nice cars. Hondas get better gas milage for

The only real drawback is that they really don't have the longevity

There USED to be a reason. I think that for the last 10 years, more

the 80s and 90s but that the actual differences in quality and
reliability have largely vanished, at least with respect to Ford.

I think a Ford of this decade is as good as a Toyota, it's cheaper to
buy (especially used), and parts are also cheaper and easier to get.

Not so sure about GM, I don't have any experience with any of their

So the government should step in and solve all our problems?

Peter Frederick wrote:

Probably not a snowball's chance in the bad place any of this will
happen, though, we all worship the free market

mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] Diesel Primer Pump The new style
is a vast improvement. It is a tube within a tube sealed with 0-rings and
contains a spring. You just push down on it when you need to prime, no
unscrewing, etc. The check valves in the lift pump (which is really just a
close fitting rod in a hole with an o-ring seal that moves in and out) work
like normal so the fuel pushes through the filter. If your hand pump leaks
fuel out, it's leaking air in when seated. Replace it. The fancy pump shown
is not an improvement over the thumb pump, which does NOT have a shaft seal
as it doesn't screw down. Mine has never leaked, although I've only had ti
for 12 years. Peter ___

Wonder if they'll get around to stand-up seating?

It should have
acknowledged that if The Times had correctly understood the history of the
proposal, the article would have qualified it, and would not have appeared
 on Page A1.

Originally read about it in one of the flying magazines IIRC. Had pictures
showing oriental people in the stand up arrangement. Seem to remember that
the Chinese or Japanese were considering it.

Re: [MBZ] California

That's what they say, but I'l wait a decade or two to see how they
hold up. GM still has problems -- one of my co-workers bought a nice
Buick recently, and it's been back to the dealer for warrenty work
half a dozen times, including a leaking GPS antenna seal. Better
than they used to be, for sure, but then we all know how easy it was
to be better at quality than GM in the 80's.

My brother in law rented an Impala a couple weeks ago when we were in
Livonia for my nieces high school graduation, and it seemed quite
nice. Lousy rear seat access for my mother, but that's not unique to
GM (I really liked my Volvo 740 in that area), but a big improvement
over my 86 Buick Century.

That is the reason we HAVE a government. We elect them, we should
hold their feet to the fire and get some things fixed for US, not
just the rich people who fund their election campaigns.

Government is NOT evil, it's what makes the difference between
civilization and plain chaos.

I'm sure you get a strong difference of opinion about that with some

The function of government is to restrain evil (provide for the common
defense and all that ...), not to take care of us.

there are not many problems with our society that do not have government as

You could use a punch and a backer just as
easily, but the tool doesn't put any force on the cam sprocket.

Neither does the hammer, if the pin is backed properly
