think the NA 606 was more like 134hp, with no turbo lag. (remember,
  we're comparing a 2.5L ten valve turbo with a 3.0 liter 24V engine with

So where can one find a list of what series engines and what series

Pretty much, except that I would check the injection timing before
pulling the pump in case it's still correct -- it's heavy!

Correct timing is 24 BTDC for NA engines, 26 BTDC for turbos.

[MBZ] OT More Cathey-inspired repairs

2008-07-15 Thread Kevin Kraly
Our lovely pool has been getting plenty of use both by us and my little boat
that's still running, but the performance of the filter pump has been
steadily decreasing. I noticed that starving for water sound, so I
checked the skimmer basket which was full of debris. When I first put it
back in, I noticed that it was sitting lower in the skimmer than usual. It
was still starving for water, and when I removed the now emptied basket
again, the water flow went back to normal. I inspected the basket and found
that the risers on the bottom of the basket were broken off causing it to
sit too low and too close to the suction pipe blocking the water flow! I
drilled two 1/4 holes (one in each side of the bottom of the basket), and
installed two bolts with nuts and tightened them leaving the 1/2 of the
excess bolt sticking through the bottom. It worked! I threaded some nuts
onto the bottom to make it more stable. It saved me from having to get a
ride to the pool store and buy a new basket!

I think you've experienced what happens to people when they put a car up for

though the ad said clearly Not Drivable Either they don't read the

over over.

When I sold my Lotus people called to ask What does it look like? Huh?
It looks like a Lotus - if you don;t know what a car looks like you probably
shouldn;t be considering buying it.

Besides, how do you describe what a car looks like to a non-car person?

The guy who contacted you about yourE430 probably thought you'd be happy if
someone showed interest in your car. Then, since he had no intention of
buying it found very minor things to make it look like the car was
unacceptable rather than saying he didn;t have the money.

I wonder what he would have done if you said the brake dust was gone and the
carpet had been replaced ;-) he'd find something else to nitpick about --

Hmm, a Ford Falcon I6 circa late '60s would get about 20mpg.

At least.  After a fresh tune-up I got 30-31 several times

on long cross-state trips in the '60.  Holley 1-barrel carb,

144cid.  Twenty-something was more usual, but about 20 meant

that something was wrong with it.  Seats six, comfortably.

Friend of mine has a Nissan Axxess.  Gets 30 mpg, and was in

a minor wreck.  As the car booked at about $700 according to

ins., they wanted to total it.  He looked around, and couldn't

find any van that was as small or got anywhere near that

kind of mileage.  They were all baby SUV's, huge and heavy.

So he ended up getting it fixed anyway, but less than perfectly.

If we could convince people they didn't need huge houses we'd use less oil

they don't need there'd be less shipping using oil, fewer factories in China

Well put Kaleb. The issue is the very small amount of slack capacity
in the worldwide market (about 1 million barrels / day). If you
increase that slack a bit, the prices will naturally lessen. The open
market (which you can't close down, no matter what the clowns in
Washington, DC think) will continue to set the price based on risk and
more supply means less risk. Less risk of someone blowing something up
that causes that 1 million slack to go away temporarily, less risk of
another dictator taking over some other facility, etc.

Kaleb is correct that what we need to do in the short term is to
remove some of that risk. During that time we need to free people to
come up with longer term solutions. Some folks seem to view the world
as a zero sum game. You can't have more because that means there is
less for someone else. That is flawed thinking that doesn't hold up to
the scrutiny of history.

The price of energy (and just wait until winter sets in and natural
gas, coal and electricity hikes hit) has become a pain point for many.
That will enable creative minds to find ways to lessen that pain and
create new wealth. We can't all go back to our agrarian roots. And I
don't believe in robbing the next generation of their turn to find new
and innovative solutions to the problems before them.

Subject: [MBZ] 300td deerslayer

Folks,

My 1982 300TD and i met a deer, essentially in downtown Washington,
Georgia. It was about dusk. It took out the headlight doors
(surrounds), the grill, bowed the a/c condensor and pressed the
radiator into the fan. And knocked the belt off the p. steering
 too.

I was only going maybe 30 or 40 mph if that.

The large doe, i think, did a flip and hopefully died in the ditch.

I turned up a dead end side road and there was a georgia state
 patrol
man hiding.

He was friendly and amazed when he realized that i was going to
 pull
everything out and continue on my trip.

He even gave me a hand and pulled on the bent radiator support with
  me

Anyway, I pulled it out and the holes in the radiator were only
 about
1/3 of the way down, so i was able to make Tybee Island with a
number of water fillups. It was a nite trip so it was fairly cool.
 No
overheating.

So, here's what i need.

Grill complete from 300D (decent looking with installation bolts if
possible

most important I need a radiator for 1982 300TD (i assume the 300D
 is
the same)

mine is a behr and has oil cooler (removable on the side ) and
transmission lines attach to the bottom

please contact me off list [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you have any of
 this

thanks,

xx rick

Re: [MBZ] poll -- just for my own curiousity

2008-07-15 Thread Rich Thomas
(1) He *should* be a muslim per his father's choice of religion, but
he has supposedly renounced or ignored that, so he is an apostate in the
eyes of the true believers, and as such should be killed (per their
beliefs). I think that being an apostate is worse than being a dog,
pig, or Jew, but I'm not sure on that fine point. (I'll have to check
the latest fatwas.) Kindy scary, huh?

(2) Whether he used a Quran, a Bible, or a Sunday flyer from Walmart, it
doesn't matter anyway -- he's a slick politician (not as slick as
BJ though) who will say and do whatever he needs to say and do to get
someone's vote.

Re: [MBZ] A Bit O.T. Acura AC Comp Lock Up/add oil

Mr. Jim typed:

As Jim said, it may release itself when cool, but don't run it again until
you have added some oil. 2 to 4 ounces should do it.

This requires evacuation, oil add and then r12 refill, right?

Rich Thomas wrote:

Why put father's in quotation marks? Are you talking about Barack Sr. or Lolo
Soetoro (his stepfather)? It's my understanding that he went to a muslim public
school (AKA terrorist training camp) in Indonesia for a while, then his mama
stuck him in a catholic school. When he was ten, he was shipped off to a
private
(non church) school in Hawaii, according to what's currently on Wiki. That
whole
thing about living in Hawaii with maternal grandparents seems way off, didn't
they always live in Iowa?

My favorite father story about Barack Jr:
When he won the NC primary, his victory speech included a line about upholding
the principles behind the flag on his father's coffin. So apparently he's
working for Kenya while drawing a paycheck from the USA government.

Mitch.

Re: [MBZ] poll -- just for my own curiousity .. Gary sees sooo many gay women

2008-07-15 Thread Bill R
Gary, you shouldn't talk about your mother and daughter that way, though I
suspect that is the way you feel about your ex. Could be one of the reasons
for that status. So, more than half the population shouldn't have a say in
leadership because they look at things from a different perspective than you
do. I didn't realize so many of the women I know were so preoccupied with
sex - maybe I should get a new GP because she is secretly turned on by old
pudgy men. Interesting, but not as interesting as the huge number of women
who wanted Hillary to win... I didn't know so many women were gay. But then
you do like to stir things up, don't you?

if not for women's suffrage, we wouldn't even need to worry about this freak
(or, for that matter, most of america's woes). women vote solely based on
who they find sexually attractive and obama is a heck of a lot hotter than
mccain.

Re: [MBZ] Totally OT poll -- just for my own curiousity

2008-07-15 Thread Rich Thomas
I don't think BHO Sr was a father in the proper sense of the word, he
was more of a babadadduh. Not that BHO Jr has any responsibility in
that regard, it was his mother's responsibility (or lack thereof), but
I am sure it has had a significant effect on him. The way he has
bounced around, it is probably hard for him to feel a part of much of
anything. I don't put much into that early schooling business, I can
barely remember what school I went to when I was 6 or 8 yr old, and what
if anything I was taught.

An article in the NYTimes quoted his (half) sister (of the Indonesian
father) as saying he took on the black identity at some point in high
school in Hawaii (where he was the only, or one of the very few, kid who
was darker than the others), sort of a self-identification, which she
had no particular feelings about one way or the other as it was his
right to be who he wanted to be. Then I think after college/law school
(and probably during), in Chicago, that (and that church aspect) became
an expedient element of his political aspirations. It is interesting to
note too that his mother was white, his father was 1/4 black African and
3/4 Arab (he had one black grandmother I think), making BHO Jr 1/8 black
African. I guess if he wants to be black that is his right -- I want
to be a 24 yr old buffed stud with a, well, I won't go there, and I
suppose if enough people believe I am then I can believe that I am and
present myself as such.

I do admire his tenacity and trajectory, it shows a lot of dedication
and intelligence and hard work to get as far as he (or anyone in a
similar position) has. I just don't think any of it really particularly
qualifies him to be president, and I find his political leanings far
from mine.

Why put father's in quotation marks? Are you talking about Barack Sr. or
 Lolo
Soetoro (his stepfather)? It's my understanding that he went to a muslim
 public
school (AKA terrorist training camp) in Indonesia for a while, then his mama
stuck him in a catholic school.

When he won the NC primary, his victory speech included a line about
 upholding
the principles behind the flag on his father's coffin. So apparently he's
working for Kenya while drawing a paycheck from the USA government.

[MBZ] Crushing classic cars

2008-07-15 Thread Wilton Strickland
Story in Raleigh paper last week: classic car enthusiast/mechanic had seven
restored, classic cars. At his garage, he got a call from a friend
asking, Where you takin' the '73 Chevvy? Answer, Nowhere, whaddaya
mean? Friend said, Just saw it go past here on a truck. Suspicious, the
owner/mechanic rushed to auto salvage yard nearby. They had already crushed
his restored, showroom-condition '73 Chevvy with 59 kmi and his equally
restored '60's Chrysler!

Oughta hang the thief AND the salvage yard guy!

this one has the first double overhead cam diesel engine so it
does not need a turbo. It will out run my previous Mercedes 2.5turbo.
This car also has the more diserable 4 speed transmission that does not
cost $4500 for repairs like the newer 5 speed unit.

 Are these three statements true?

The OM606 that is in the car does have similar horsepower numbers to the
earlier diesels (may even be faster than an '87 300D). If you are at
any altitude above sea level though it will get slow fast. Personally,
I wouldn't buy a non-turbo unless it was a W115 or similar vintage where
one wasn't available.

The five speed transmission is in the W210 chassis. It is about twice
as expensive. Most likely to do with the fact it is computer controlled.

My 2.5T is still for sale ;)

I'm a bit late on this one - Among all of the other things we wouldn't like,
one of the things that does make some sense is to have more food produced
and consumed in the same area, and get used to eating what is local and in
season. Do we really need fresh fruit/flowers/fish grown half a world away?
Just some sensible changes would help the amount of waste in the system.
IIRC the small farmer is more productive per acre than the mega-farm. Don't
know for sure about that in our mid-West, but I am sure it is true for third
world areas.

Scott Thompson, co-owner of TTE, said he gets about 20 police inquiries a week
about metal theft.

There have just been a rash of incidents, he said. Unfortunately, there's
not
a great tracking system in place, so there's only so much we can do.

If a car is less than 10 years old, Thompson explained, the person bringing it
in must have a notarized title. But for older cars, all a person needs is the
make, model and vehicle identification number.

We just try and use common sense, Thompson said.

Well when I talked to the guy on the phone he said at that time he
really was not looking for a 124 etc, and what would I take. Well, I
told him its a very clean low mile 124 for 5 grand or less, probably not
going to be a whole lot of room to drop but he is more than welcome to
make an offer. The things he described as wrong with the car sounds
like he is looking for a new car or perhaps a car that is a year or 2
old. Not one that is 14 years old and not certainly one in this price
range. Geez. Would have been one thing if he would have just said he
was not interested, but he made it out like Im hiding things about the
car, and its just a total beat up piece of crap. At this point, I would
not sell the car to the guy even at full price. He is the type I prefer
not to deal with because they are a pain in the ass later. If the do
buy something, later the bitch and want you to fix this or fix that, or
pay them back because they took their 500 240D to the dealer and spent

I suspect that there is more to this story.

Some municipalities have a strict limit on the number of cars you have and
if you exceed the limit, they will haul them away and crush them at your
expense after a reasonable number of warnings are sent to you.

The actual start of injection is still 26 BTDC using the drip method, but the
locking tab on the IP comes up at 15ATDC due to the need to locate it on the
side of the pump and the design of the governor.

The locking tab is more accurate, I think.

A few years ago, there was a discussion of the subject on the list

with the locking pin is set to lock in the pin at 15 degrees AFTER
TDC. can anyone verify that I have this right. I am used to the old
26 BTDC on the 621 engines. I admit to being behind the times.

None of the politicians has a plan that makes any sense at all. On the left you
get the no drilling all conservation, likes all drive hybrids. On the right you
get drill drill drill, we'll figure out alternatives later, drive an SUV now.
Neither side is going to ever get anywhere because both plans have holes the
size of Mars... If either of them wanted to really get something done they'd
compromise. However out idiot-in-chief has his if you're not with us you're

Re: [MBZ] question for people who know about music - still no MB

2008-07-15 Thread Gary Thompson
My younger brother discovered just what competition was when he got to
North Texas. He thought he was a pretty good sax player until he
started meeting these guys who were from families of 2-3 generations
of jazz musicians and got their first horn handed to them in the
cradle. (Our Dad can't carry a tune in a bucket) He ended up in one of
the reading bands on tenor his Freshman year. Switched to bari after
that and made it as far up as the 4:00 band.

He realized pretty quickly he didn't want to teach and you don't need
a degree to performed. Switched to business for his degree. Of course,
no way to explain how he ended up as a pilot instead...

Me, I was a journeyman trombone player. Spent a couple of years in the
University of Texas Jazz Orchestra until I got too short on practice
time. Still ahve a couple of horns in the closet.

None of the politicians has a plan that makes any sense at all.

As ususal.

Politicians have trouble with anything more forward-looking than the
next election, which is 2 - 4 - 6 years.

Some businesses often have the same problem, limiting their vision to
the next quarter or fiscal year, but many are used to dealing with
investments that take years or decades to bear fruit (e.g. drilling for
oil).

You won't find the answers to very many problems from a politician.

This just does not make any sense at all. WHy would a salvage yard
crush a car without parting it out first? Unless they are talking about
somebody who just took the car directly to the crusher (not a salvage
yard)

Tom Hargrave: I suspect that there is more to this story. Some municipalities
have a strict limit on the number of cars you have and if you exceed the limit,
they will haul them away and crush them at your expense after a reasonable
number of warnings are sent to you.

OR perhaps they were not showroom restored cars and he just wants to collect
the insurance on them as if they were perfect. I could see someone overstating
the value of their car in order to collect insurance.

[MBZ] Porterfield Brake oads

2008-07-15 Thread LarryT
Howdy -
I ran across an ad for some Porterfield brake pads which supposedly
leaves no brake dust and yet still
brake very well. At $110 for a set of pads that will do the front I would
certainly hope so ---
;-)
Anybody try pads such as these? Even if they work as advertised $110 is a
bit much - but I'd love to
get rid of brake dust ---

I have tried dust shields but they never fit properly and end up squeaking
or worse, an edge will catch and rip the
sheetmetal to pieces --

no, it's just the feminization of america

when i was a kid, the neighborhood was our small town. there was a good
sized hardware/department store called wainrite's. me and my friends
would roam around there as we had nothing better to do. they would throw us
out.

they had a security guard who looked like a giant to us. he'd see us, grab
us by the neck, carry us to the door and literally throw us out. we would
then wait until he was out of earshot and give him a few choice racial slurs
and discuss how lucky he was that we didn't want to get in trouble or his
ass would be kicked.

this was just life. we weren't upset or traumatized, but just had to move
on to another playground. if i went him and told my dad what happened, he'd
go down to the store and congratulate the guy for not putting up with our
punk kid bs and commend his restraint for not beating the tar out of us.

today this would be a national scandal, especially if peanut dust was
present.

the rise of women has created a faggotized nation of whiners and
allergetics.

this was just life. we weren't upset or traumatized, but just had to move
on to another playground. if i went him and told my dad what happened, he'd
go down to the store and congratulate the guy for not putting up with our
punk kid bs and commend his restraint for not beating the tar out of us.

today this would be a national scandal, especially if peanut dust was
 present.

There is a correlation between the rise of the nanny state / loss of our

isn't that awfully cheap for 87 300D with only 80,000 miles? I wonder how
long it would take me to get from Atlanta to Wichita?

Probably has the bead head it would crack somewhere in Alabama.

When they have a rally in Michigan's capital, the gov't builds a tall chain

local newspaper does a dozen or two articles vilifying them, which amounts to
about a million dollars worth of free advertising. What a waste.

Let them protest it's their right. Its not their right to receive that

Nope, they don't pay for it.
Now, if the Lung Association wants to put on a 5k for a fundraiser, then the
city of Lansing will provide a couple of dozen cops and send the association
the
bill for overtime.
