Bad deal -- he'd either bring his Suburban or his fuel-guzzler pickup. You
couldn't give either away, unless it is for the price of scrap metal. You
couldn't cover the cost of his return ticket.

I am looking at an absolutely ridiculous electric bill for last month. I
used the same amount of electricity as the same month last year, but my bill
is much higher due a fuel surcharge. A normal Summer electric bill for the
house and apartment would be under $400, this year it is $525. I assume
everyone is getting some of this - but more than a 25% increase is pretty
steep.

You could bump that market up a bit by providing helicopter transport in to

it is also true for Atlantic Blvd. and Beach Blvd. I avoid all of them, but
my darling wife heads out JT Butler in the mornings and sees the clogged
roads on the other side heading each way.
Is that a full-time, seasonal or weekend rental you have? I would think if
it were near the beach or inter-coastal you should be getting some traffic -
and you can't get too far from either there, can you?

[MBZ] Transmission question

2008-09-21 Thread Wonko the Sane
The tranny slippage on my 240D (automatic) in reverse seems to be getting
worse and worse.

I still can't find that adjustment bolt that sometimes backs out -- maybe
Kaleb can point it out next time he is in Iowa.

But I checked the fluid level, thinking maybe it was low, when we got back
from a 30 miles drive. The fluid level is about an inch above the maximum
mark. This is probably because the last guy who checked it didn't know to go
an inch below minimum if the fluid wasn't up to temperature. I think this
happened with I had the transmission flushed a couple of years ago.

Would having too much fluid in the system have anything to do with slipping
going backwards? (Probably not but worth asking.)

[MBZ] Bearing question - W123 300 turbo

2008-09-21 Thread andrew strasfogel
We took our first long trip in the 1983 30TD - from D.C. to Barboursville
and Gordonsville in the Blue Ridge Piedmont country of Virginia. We drove
along country lanes and charming little untouched towns, viewing miles of
lovely open spaces. We visited James Madison's estate - Montpelier - which
was recently restored and now open to the public. Well worth the $14
admission charge. What was most interesting to me was the amount of work
they had to do to DEconsruct the mega-additions that the DuPont family had
put on the original house. Marion DuPont died without heirs, and willed
the property to the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Two decades
and multiple millions of $$ later, it is now another back to its original
1850 configuration and a Monticello -like attraction (Jefferson's estate).
En route, everything worked well with the TD except I was concerned by noise
that MAY indicate worn bearings. Can someone please describe the audible
(or other) symptoms of worn front wheel bearings? I haven't had a problem
with worn bearings for 20 years so have forgotten what the symptoms are.

Re: [MBZ] Transmission question

2008-09-21 Thread OK Don
I thought the issue with an over-full tranny was that the fuid gets
whipped up into a froth - then can't lubricate parts, resulting in a
tranny that grinds its self to bits. Maybe it starts with reverse?

Would having too much fluid in the system have anything to do with slipping
going backwards? (Probably not but worth asking.)

Re: [MBZ] '87 300D saga continues

2008-09-21 Thread OK Don
We measured the timing today - it's at 18 degrees ATDC, should be 15
+/- 1. It blows less (almost none) white smoke when it's at operating
temp, and idles smoother, though still not as even as it should. So we
drove it up to temp, and checked the timing again, thinking that the
injection timer might be sticking sometimes, and not other times. Got
the same result, 18 degrees.

FYI - the chain stretch measured 3 degrees. I would think that
injector timing would be less than the cam difference since it's
closer to the crank sprocket, if the 3 degrees off was due to the
chain.

The car will blow some black smoke near the top RPM, and does blow one
little puff when it starts.
I did notice when it's idling that there is an even stream of white,
until it stumbles - then there is a break in the white, followed by a
puff of black, then the white resumes. Strangest thing I've seen yet.

Peter didn't think that this difference would account for the smoke,
based on his earlier comment - see below.

however, unless you dropped the chain or took the injection timer
off, I don't think you are that far off on timing, it takes 10
degrees or so to make white smoke on these engines.

Re: [MBZ] '87 300D saga continues

2008-09-21 Thread Peter Frederick
The combination of late valve timing (low compression) and late
injection timing will get you into trouble.

If it were me, I'd roll in a new chain,as the 60x engines appear to
be rather sensitive to chain stretch and usually don't show much when
well maintained (mine had no stretch at all at 270,000 miles,
although I cannot swear the chain was original).

Intermitant idle fluctuations can be a sticking control rod -- have
you put a full bottle of RedLine diesel injection treatment in a tank
of fuel and run it through, or done the Diesel Purge thing? Either
will usually cure the idle problem, and probably clean up the
injectors and pre-chambers, too.

[MBZ] Trek to Starfest 2008

2008-09-21 Thread Loren Faeth
If anyone is within driving distance of Ames, IA tomorrow evening,
you are invited for some good bbq and a chance to meet the folks
driving coast to coast for the Starfest 2008.

MBCA crosscountry drive from East coast to the West coast to arrive
at Starfest 2008, in SF. Tomorrow night's supper is at Hickory Park.
Werner said there are 5 cars so far... If I had insurance on the
E320 and Don drove over, we could double their numbers tomorrow
night. As is, I think we will have the 300D, the 200D 2.4 and the
380SL there, along with the (dog de) van.

Don, Are you coming over for some BBQ tomorrow night? Hickory Park, 7 PM.
Dan, where are you?

[MBZ] Alda Shimming, 124

2008-09-21 Thread Loren Faeth
I finally got around to shimming the alda today. The 300D would
barely get to 80 floored before the fix. I have read a lot of
accounts of the job, but there were a lot of details missing, so I
felt i was flying blind

It takes a 24 mm thin open end wrench. I had one from my HF 1/2
shaft router. I did the job without taking off the intake manifold
or injection lines. I did take off the electric idle control plug,
the temp sensor from the intake, and most of the vacuum lines.

Parts needed: I used a new oil drain plug copper seal. I have lots
since i use an oil sucker. I took a dremel with a diamond grinder
wheel and removed about half the crosssectional width of the ring. I
was holding the ring with needlenose. THe ring was distorted some in
the process, so when I was done, I tapped it down on my big punch to
make the inside round again. It works like a ring sizer, if you have
ever seen one of them. I made sure the ID would fit over the parts
sticking up on the IP, then made sure the OD would fit inside the
ALDA, then figured I was ready to re-assemble. Dave M has the shim specs at
http://www.w124performance.com/images/OM603_injection/ALDA_shim.jpg
he says ID is 14.3 mm and the OD is 17.9 mm. Maybe someone has a
source for the actual part. I like making what i have work.

Tools needed:
Thin 24 mm open end
thin 27 mm open end. (I used a 1 1/16 and got the job done, but a
thin 27 would make it a lot easier.)
screwdriver to remove vacuum line from ALDA.
13mm box wrench to remove vacuum fitting from ALDA
10mm to remove inj line clip from the outside of the manifold
telescoping magnet to help maneuver the ALDA back in place
long straight screwdriver to help maneuver the ALDA back in place.
Dremel and some wheel to abrade the outer surface of the ring.
needlenose pliers
large punch

Remove the washer bottle. I didn't do this
until re-assembly. Taking it off earlier makes the job easier.
Remove the vacuum(pressure) line to the ALDA, and the fitting it
attaches to. Be careful with the aluminum washer for the fitting. I
lost mine even though i was being careful. Hold the big nut with the
27. Use the 24 to loosen the ALDA. Turn it CCW facing from
above. There is a 24mm hex at the bottom of the ALDA body, even
though you can't see it without a mirror.

When the ALDA is unscrewed, you can get it out by tipping toward the
engine, then moving it back.
When you are satisfied with your grinder job on the washer, drop it
on the stuff sticking up on the IP, and put the ALDA back on. Be
careful not to crossthread. Tighten the ALDA down with the hole for
the fitting pointing out as before. Finish reassembly in the reverse order.

The road test:

The car is probably still not as quick as my SDL was, but it is much
improved. Now at 75-80 the pedal is barely down. I can mash the
pedal at 80 and it has 'go and that is a big improvement. Before
the shim, the pedal was pretty much floored at 80. Dave's spec says
the shim can be up to 1.5 mm. If I could find that shim, I'd put it
in. I saw no signs of smoking, so I think I am only part way
there. If I take off the manifold sometime, I will turn out the
screw a turn or so and try that. The seal was still there, so I
think it is safe to assume the ALDA is un-messed with before I got
to it. My guess is that the oil plug washer is 1mm, and if a turn is
.75mm, I think one turn on the adjustment screw will finish the job
at 1.75mm cumulative. For now, it is reasonably well performing, so
I won't monkey with it more unless I am in there anyway for something else.
