I had to replace the rotors on Mom's 2004 Classic (Malibu) this spring because
they were rusting and layers were flaking off the braking surfaces.
I had my choice of original style vibration damping rotors for $60-80 each or
the cheap solid ones for $30 each. The original rotors were very fuzzy on the
edges, with layers of metal rusting and expanding, looked like the edge of a
soggy phone book. Solid rotors just get some surface rust on the edges over the
years. I put solid rotors on the car, the brakes don't howl, and I expect the
rotors to wear out, not fall apart like the OE rotors did.

That is a steal. I paid $250 for my wheels but I got a NIB never mounted

As far as F wheel bearings. They typically have a couple of sounds -
one is like a roar that gets louder with speed - I can only describe it
 as
 a
giant fan spinning making a giant wind noise. You may also feel a
 looseness
when going around corners - almost like the wheel is tilting as you

 turn.

Replacing the WBs is not a difficult job - jack the front end up and
place securely on jack stands - remove the wheels/tires, remove the 2
 bolts
holding the caliper on and hang it to chassis with some wire. Then
 remove
the small grease cap and you;ll see the bearing nut and the outer
 bearing.
Remove the nut and wiggle the hub off the spindle - the outer bearing
 will
fall out so catch it to keep it falling in the dirt. Use a screw

 driver

 to
remove the inner grease seal (a new one should always be used) the
 inner
WB can then be removed, then, with a long punch placed into the center

 of

the hub, feel for the small ledge of the WB race (the solid part of the
 WB
that the bearings ride upon) that portrudes into the center of the hub
 and
slowly tap the punch and drive the ace out working your way around so
 it
doesn't become cocked. Keep tapping until the race falls out. When I
 say
tap, it may require more energetic hitting than that implies. Once
 done,
flip the hub over and repeat on the inner race.

Before reassembly, get a tube of appropriate grease fom the MB
 dealer -
it comes in a tube with exactly enough to do 2 wheels - fold the tube
 in
half to equally divide it and cut in half - you'll have a container for
 each
 wheel.

Start the new races (I like to use a piece of wood and a hammer) into
the hub and place grease into the center portion of the hub. Before
 putting
the WBs into place, pack grease into all the roller pins (that's the
 actual
WBs). Part of the grease goes into the WBs and part into the cap.
 There's
a small copper thingie that attaches to the axle to cut down radio
 static -
my WB kit came with new ones.(from Rusty).

Slip the bearings into place and snug the nut down. This is where
feel comes into play. Tighten it and test the tightness by using

 the

tip of a scrrewdriver to move the washer back and forth. A small amount
 of
force should be needed but you should not have to really put weight
 behind
it. Kind of like the force to move a 10# weight. Too tight will cause
 the
WBs to overheat and fail quickly. Next put the caliper (now's a good
 time
to replace the brake pads) wheel /tire and you're pretty much done.

  Now

you can do the other side ;-)

Now come back and visit Va again - there's a lot to see!
 ;-)Good luck -

Re: [MBZ] Bearing question - W123 300 turbo

2008-09-30 Thread LarryT

Hey Andrew --
We're in Chester, a small village near I95 about 20 miles S or Richmond.
It's a great place to live - although I liked Frostburg a lot - its big
problem was too little work. Once the construction project was done and the
engineering co I worked for didn;t have enough work to keep me so I was
stuck in Frostburg.

Anyway - Chester is a wonderful place to live - it's grown unbelievably in
the last 20 years just like everywhere else. They keep getting closer to
widening some of the great little sports car friendly roads - I send a
letter objecting to it but I doubt that has much effect. I have a theory
about making existing roads wider/nicer - when you do that it attracts more
traffic, which neccesitates wider/nicer/more roads - in an endless circle.

have a nice day -

Most rotors I've worked with have not been machined on the O.D.
No real reason to do so, purely cosmetic IMHO.
I've long since considered most rotors to be expendable. Fleet Service company
that had my companies contract a few years ago would never authorize turning
car drums or rotors, they didn't consider it cost effective.

they were rusting and layers were flaking off the braking surfaces.
I had my choice of original style vibration damping rotors for $60-80 each
 or
the cheap solid ones for $30 each. The original rotors were very fuzzy on the
edges, with layers of metal rusting and expanding, looked like the edge of a
soggy phone book. Solid rotors just get some surface rust on the edges over
 the
years. I put solid rotors on the car, the brakes don't howl, and I expect the
rotors to wear out, not fall apart like the OE rotors did.

 Great instructions - thanks.
I recommend Pomme Resaurant (www.restaurantpomme.com) in Gordonsville

 and

 a
visit to Barboursville Winery. Old Culpeper was charming as well.
 Can't
recommend our BB, as the proprietor was a bit too loony and the

was strictly self-serve and mostly nonexistent!

As far as F wheel bearings. They typically have a couple of sounds
 -
one is like a roar that gets louder with speed - I can only describe
 it
 as
 a
giant fan spinning making a giant wind noise.

Use a screw

 driver

 to

remove the inner grease seal (a new one should always be used) the
 inner
WB can then be removed, then, with a long punch placed into the
 center

 of

the hub, feel for the small ledge of the WB race (the solid part of
 the

 WB
that the bearings ride upon) that portrudes into the center of the
 hub
 and
slowly tap the punch and drive the ace out working your way around so
 it
doesn't become cocked. Keep tapping until the race falls out. When
 I
 say
tap, it may require more energetic hitting than that implies. Once
 done,
flip the hub over and repeat on the inner race.

  Before reassembly,

Probably because you can now buy new from China for less than the labor
of a machinist to turn the old ones. Of course they warp and rust out

Re: [MBZ] Bearing question - W123 300 turbo

2008-09-30 Thread LarryT
You're absolutely correct - we drove rt33 from Richmond to Elkton a while
back - gorgeous country as you said - huge farms, small towns. etc - I made
ther mistake of letting my wife drive part way - I had a new Porsche
magazine I wanted to read ;-) Bad idea. We drove to the top of the
mountain - which wasn't bad, then we started down - switchbacks, one after
another. And while I enjoy driving fast - I soon found out I *don't* care
to be driven fast! All those years I put my wife through - me driving at
times like a madman - and she was quietly calm - claiming she trusted me.
Now the shoe was on the other foot and I wasn't nearly as calm. I trust her
driving (I taught her when she was 16) and she's a great driver, but being
driven down a mountain road filled with switchbacks at 45-55mph is not my
cup o tea! We were in our 93 Olds - not exactly a sports car and the turns
could be better described by nautical terms than road racing terms. We
wallowed and heeled from one turn to the next ;-)

Oh well, we both survived but it taught me a valuable lesson - and showed
how much my wife trusts me.

Back to Rt 33 20 - one thing that amazes me about most Va roads is the
cleanliness - very few McDonalds wrappers and alum cans - I was rudely
awakened to the fact not all of USA is like that - flew into Laguardia and
drove to Ct - saw so much trash it looked like a landfill. Everything from
cars (stripped pretty quickly) to furniture - *big* furniture like sofa's
and beds - amazing.

I have long wanted to go back to the Blue Ridge Pkwy following small country
roads and do some searching for antiques and sports car lanes. The trip is
planned for the 3rd week of Oct but that may change. Hoping to take the
911 - weather should be very pleasant by then.

Will report if we make the trip --

BTW, the Va State Park system has cabins for rent inside the parks - some
are more rustic than others and most are spoken far way in advance. No TV,
no phone, etc. Might try to get into one -

still has both cars and is willing to take $2500!

So here are my notes. No affiliation, just a guy I've talked

 * tailpipe falling off
 * power sun roof

 * evidence of water on floor ( I don't remember which one...)
 * complains that the engine vibrates

So 2500 for both or each?

A couple months ago I looked a a couple W123s. The guy wanted
$5000 for the tired wagon I was interested it.

I'm out of the market (for now...), but he contacted me and
still has both cars and is willing to take $2500!

So here are my notes. No affiliation, just a guy I've talked
 to a couple times.

Located south of St. Louis, MO near the town of Hillsboro (just
up the road from the Goldman covered bridge park)

His email address is [EMAIL PROTECTED]

 He has a '84 300D
  * practically rust free
  * fair red paint
  * broken/missing air filter mount pieces
  * tailpipe falling off
  * power sun roof
  * power steering leak - occasionally driven dry
  * evidence of water on floor ( I don't remember which one...)
  * complains that the engine vibrates
  * new motor mounts

[MBZ] W115 radiator?

2008-09-30 Thread Tim C
Hi,

I'm hunting a w115 automatic radiator for my '74 240D, I've got a pinhole
leak in mine somewhere. None of my usual radiator dealers carry this, the
dealer says there's one in America and quoted me $1355.25 (not a typo,
parts girl was shocked but double-checked the part number). I don't know
many MB-specific parts dealers, but the ones I Google'd up don't stock the
radiator itself.

Is my best course of action to take out the existing radiator and try to
find+solder the leak, ship one from a parts yard and hope it's in good
condition, or can anyone suggest a place that might have one? The car gets
use pretty much daily so I would strongly prefer to replace with a known
good one and get the existing one recored at my leisure, but I can deal with
doing it quickly if that's the only way.

Thanks,

That can be true if you rely on somebody else to fix your car for you.
If you cant work on it yourself, you really have no business buying one

the RE list to a certain point. Dont be dumb about it, but cheap cars
can usually be fixed quite cheap especially if you have parts cars
laying around.

I think the saying comes from the idea that if you want a Condition 2 car, it's
far better to buy one than to buy one in Condition 4 and then replace
practically the whole car to upgrade it to a 2.
I think what you are saying is that if you want a 3 1/2, you can make it from a
4 1/2 and a couple of 5s. JimC seems to be good at making 3.5s or even 3s out of
crap and labor.

[MBZ] W115 Radiator

2008-09-30 Thread tom tomscat

Hi Tim,

I have an auto radiator out of a 1976 300D sitting in my garage. It appears a
little different from the one
I currently have in my 1975 300D, seemed to fit a little tighter as I recall.
Not sure if it is original equipment
for the '76 or not. Previous owner may have swapped it from something else.
It's been sitting for 5 or 6 years, so
I'm not sure how good it is, but it came out of a running vehicle. You are
welcome to it for the cost of shipping.

A whole bunch of benz to be had in town this month. Must be all the
folks out of work getting their stables down to a manageable size.

Re: [MBZ] W115 radiator?

Heck, just take out the one you have and put a small weld on it. That
will plug the hole and allow you to not lose water out that way. Does
not really reduce your cooling enough unless the car is used in the
desert or hot hot summers. I have seen the radiators with holes the
size of baseballs soldered up and running around Seattle. Not that I
would want to do that myself.

Hi,

I'm hunting a w115 automatic radiator for my '74 240D, I've got a
pinhole
leak in mine somewhere. None of my usual radiator dealers carry
this, the
dealer says there's one in America and quoted me $1355.25 (not a
typo,
parts girl was shocked but double-checked the part number). I don't
know
many MB-specific parts dealers, but the ones I Google'd up don't
stock the

radiator itself.

Is my best course of action to take out the existing radiator and
try to

find+solder the leak, ship one from a parts yard and hope it's in good
condition, or can anyone suggest a place that might have one? The
car gets
use pretty much daily so I would strongly prefer to replace with a
known
good one and get the existing one recored at my leisure, but I can
deal with

doing it quickly if that's the only way.

Thanks,
