Re: [MBZ] Euan

2008-10-04 Thread Jim Cathey
First, and most obviously, the engine is sensitive to low revs. Which
means that revs always have to kept high, especially in gears 3-5.

All your problems sound like they might be relieved somewhat
with a shorter rear end in it. Our 190D (manny conversion)
exhibits a mild form of this behavior. I believe that I also
need to swap rear ends with the donor as well. Whereas the
200D (115) is very grunty and has plenty of torque. Surprisingly
pleasant driving behavior.

Euan, any time you want to bore us with a post like that you go right ahead.
I find it much more interesting than the political pap we've had lately.
The juddering you describe interests me since it doesn't happen on my 240D or
190D both manual. I do get a shudder on the 190D first thing in the morning. I
don't know if its clutch trouble or the engine not having as much power when
its cold. I live with it as its gone within a mile. Could you potentially swap
in the rear end from a different car? I don't know if the wagon had a unique
rear diff but if not it seems like one from a 240D should get your gearing
down...

Rolf, notice Euan's email address ends in .nz. Loads of cool cars out there we
never got in the US. You did notice his is a 5spd.

This is dangerous, Rolf. I could bore you cross-eyed on this subject.

The wagon was manufactured with this transmission. The PO (a Brit padre
with an RAF Tornado squadron in Holland) selected that option at the
Dutch assembly plant he toured with his options tick-sheet. I bought the
wagon from him after he emigrated to the Colonies in 1987. It had 29000
miles on it then.

[MBZ] Euan's 5spd 123.190

2008-10-04 Thread Max Dillon
Howdy Euan, we had an exchange re: juddering several years ago when I also
owned a car like yours.

Mine would make an obnoxious noise at low RPM in 1st and 2nd, and keeping above
2000 RPM would eliminate it. The noise came from either the engine or the
transmission to my ears, and my mechanic declared it to be a problem in the
transmission. He said that incorrectly set-up clearances would cause it, that
it was purely an annoyance, but if I had $1600 for a rebuild he could probably
fix it.

However, I don't think that your problem is the same, unless it is a much more
severe case.

Another possible cause (that I learned about in intervening years) would be an
incorrect clutch disc - do you know if your's was ever replaced? The 240D
version can cause an intolerable juddering when installed in a 300D/TD (four
springs vs. five in the 5cyl clutch disc).

always do one pad at a time - using a large screwdriver wedged between the
old pad and rotor obviously being careful not to damage the rotor - although
that's unlikely.

Never remove both pads at the same time - you'll find a worn pad makes a
perfect place to wedge the screwdriver.

Don't forget the backing plates if fitted and put some anti- squeal paste on
the back of the pads and don;t put greasy finger

The new pads should slide in easily as long as the piston/s is fully

after the war, they were still vilified equally with the ss who ran the
camps, but i always found this to be incorrect, sort of the equivalent
singling out marines or rangers for special treatment. then again, such
subtleties were not really on anyone's minds as the winners were pissed off
and anyone wearing SS insignia was in serious trouble.

The SS stigma lasts to this day. I knew an old german guy, gunther, who
spent many years as a young lad fighting in russia for his country. being
the asshole i am and just loving to pick on germans, i would always tell him
he was amongst friends and can admit he was not just wermacht and was, in
fact, waffen SS. i most enjoy his shrill and hysterical denials for having
to do with anything ss.

After humble beginnings as a protection unit for the NSDAP leadership, the
Waffen-SS eventually grew into a huge force of thirty-eight combat divisions
comprising over 950,000 men. In the Nuremberg Trials, the Waffen-SS was
condemned as part of a criminal organisation, and therefore Waffen-SS
veterans were denied many of the rights afforded other German combat

Re: [MBZ] One down

2008-10-04 Thread Curt Raymond
Well that was to be the subject of my next post.
I didn't realize that the front rotors and wheel bearings were inter-related
the way they are and I'm not prepared...

In fact its terrible because in pushing the driver's side front caliper back I
pretty much destroyed the pads, it looked like they were delaminating anyway...
So I had to put in new pads but leave the old rotor which is really rusty. I'm
reasonably sure the caliper is retracted the whole way because the new pads are
flush to metal, I can't see how they could fit in any farther but they're
REALLY tight against the rotor. Like its hard to turn the wheel tight, like it
makes a horrible squealing noise when I move the car tight...

I know when I'm over my head, this'll go to my Indy for finishing. The rears
are done, one set of pads is replaced, I know the rearmost cables are not
stuck...

Here is another interesting article. It has a similar thesis, EXCEPT it
explores the role of Congress, finds the point at which Congress tried to
act (and then places blame on those for failing.

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchivesid=aSKSoiNbnQY0

It's a pretty interesting article. Here is the most important part:

What happened next was extraordinary. For the first time in history, a
serious Fannie and Freddie reform bill was passed by the Senate Banking
Committeehttp://banking.senate.gov/public/. The bill gave a regulator
power to crack down, and would have required the companies to eliminate
their investments in risky assets.

Different World

If that bill had become law, then the world today would be different. In
2005, 2006 and 2007, a blizzard of terrible mortgage paper fluttered out
of the Fannie and Freddie clouds, burying many of our oldest and most
venerable institutions. Without their checkbooks keeping the market liquid
and buying up excess supply, the market would likely have not existed.

But the bill didn't become law, for a simple reason: Democrats opposed it
on a party-line vote in the committee, signaling that this would be a
partisan issue. Republicans, tied in knots by the tight Democratic
opposition, couldn't even get the Senate to vote on the matter.

That such a reckless political stand could have been taken by the
Democrats was obscene even then. Wallison
wrotehttp://www.aei.org/publications/pubID.22514/pub_detail.asp at the
time: ``It is a classic case of socializing the risk while privatizing the
profit. The Democrats and the few Republicans who oppose portfolio
limitations could not possibly do so if their constituents understood what
they were doing.''

Mounds of Materials

Now that the collapse has occurred, the roadblock built by Senate
Democrats in 2005 is unforgivable. Many who opposed the bill doubtlessly
did so for honorable reasons. Fannie and Freddie provided mounds of
materials defending their practices. Perhaps some found their propaganda
convincing.

But we now know that many of the senators who protected Fannie and
Freddie, including Barack
Obamahttp://search.bloomberg.com/search?q=Barack+Obamasite=wnewsclient=wnewsproxystylesheet=wnewsoutput=xml_no_dtdie=UTF-8oe=UTF-8filter=pgetfields=wnnissort=date:D:S:d1,

have received mind-boggling levels of financial support from them over the
years.

There has been a lot of talk about who is to blame for this crisis. A look
back at the story of 2005 makes the answer pretty clear.

Oh, and there is one little footnote to the story that's worth keeping in
mind while Democrats point fingers between now and Nov. 4: Senator John
McCainhttp://search.bloomberg.com/search?q=John+McCainsite=wnewsclient=wnewsproxystylesheet=wnewsoutput=xml_no_dtdie=UTF-8oe=UTF-8filter=pgetfields=wnnissort=date:D:S:d1

2008-10-04 Thread Euan

Hi there, Max

Yes, I remember our conversations. Thanks for your comments this time too.

Apart from a thrust bearing renewal last year, nothing has been touched
in the clutch. It's the original.

Another possible cause (that I learned about in intervening years) would be an
incorrect clutch disc - do you know if your's was ever replaced? The 240D
version can cause an intolerable juddering when installed in a 300D/TD (four
springs vs. five in the 5cyl clutch disc).

The flywheel explanation came from a diesel engineer acquaintance who's
been very keen to buy the wagon. This chap believes that the flywheels
in 300TDs of this vintage were too heavy. But what that implies for this
juddering feedback is beyond me, I'm afraid.

Were a lower ratio diff to be fitted, what would that mean for fuel
consumption on the highway, I wonder?

Cheers

Yes but where was the good senator when the good times where rolling? Did
he stand up and warn about the dangers of uncontrolled lending? Did he say
that whilst home ownership is a good thing it is not for everybody? Or is
he using this to further his own political ambition? If he is then he is
worse than the jokers who took their eyes off the ball in the first place.
However this statement underlines why there is a bailout, collective guilt
will be soothed with taxpayer money.
The other side of the coin is what would happen if there is no bailout?
Would there be big problems or are these problems perceived? The stock
market is largely made up of smoke and mirrors, people get spooked and a
stampede follows, even though there may not be any good reason to do so.
At least with this we sort of know what the problem is and can predict the
likely result.
My thoughts are that the bailout should be a long term loan, the
regulations should be tightened to ensure the idiots are weeded out and
taxes should be raised on the rich (best along the lines of a higher
luxury tax) to partly pay for all this stupidity. Far as I am concerned it
should have been the share holders of the greedy lenders who should have
said stop, as they have the brains.

bailout bill : (or Billionaire bailout bill if you prefer)

This bill does not represent a new and sudden departure from free market
principles as much as it represents an emergency response to
congressional actions that have ignored free market principles, and our
Constitution, for decades. If anyone in Washington should offer their
resignation it should be the members of Congress who peddled the fantasy
of free home ownership without risk. No institution in our country is
more responsible for the myth or borrowing without consequences than the
United States Congress.

As much as members of Congress want to find scapegoats, the root of this
problem is political greed in Congress. Members of Congress from both
parties wanted short-term political credit for promoting home ownership
even though they were putting our entire economy at risk by encouraging
people to buy homes they couldn't afford. Then, instead of conducting
thorough oversight and correcting obvious problems with unstable entities
like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, members of Congress chose to ignore the
problem and distract themselves with unprecedented amounts of pork-barrel
spending.

Taxpayers who want to ensure that this doesn't happen again should send
a very clear message to Washington that it's time for Congress to live
within its means and restore the principles of limited government and
free markets that made this country great. I will do everything in my
power to ensure that this bill does not lead us down a slippery slope of
European style socialism and slow economic growth. I will also promise
taxpayers that I will do everything in my power to block what I expect
will be hundreds of attempts by politicians in Washington to continue
business-as-usual borrowing and spending in the next Congress. In a time
of crisis, American families have to make hard choices between budget
priorities. So should Congress. If politicians want to create new
programs they should eliminate duplicative programs or reduce funding for
less important programs. The only way we can put this crisis behind us is
for Congress to rejoin the real world of budget choices and consequences
which, as we have seen in recent days, can be ignored for only so long.

This is one of the most coherent things I have seen coming out of the
general vicinity of the District of Columbia.

[MBZ] Upper ball joints

2008-10-04 Thread Jim Cathey

I've just finished doing one (of the two) in Ethelred, the '82
380 SL. They were both bad and you could rattle the wheels back
and forth when jacked up. (Chunka-chunka.) It's been worrying
me, and I finally got time to address it.

It's actually not that hard, a 4 grinder is the secret weapon.
A carbide burr in the Dremel helped out. It can be done on a
jack with no more disassembly of the front end than removing the
brake caliper. (And that only for clearance.) Then it all just
bolts back together. It took me about four hours, I expect to
halve that on the other one. I used the TRW bolt-on joint, the
official procedure is to replace the upper control arm, at a
significantly greater expense and with a lot more trouble.

I recall that being the case but the HVAC worked fine without it.

Come to think of it, there was a second vacuum reservoir in the left
 fender
near the hood on my 79 300TD. A PO had disconnected it and everything
 still
worked fine so I never gave it a second thought until now. Is that
 the one
 that troubles you?

That reservoir is for the HVAC system. It was insufficient to
handle the locking system so a different one was added for that.

Re: [MBZ] Weird attack of sluggishness - W123 300TD

2008-10-04 Thread andrew strasfogel
I have a can of Biobor algaecide that came with the car but the directions
are quite complicated, not to mention hard to read, as they are printed in a
twisted way around the can. Has anyone used this stuff? I currently have
about 5 gallons in the tank (1983 300TD), or about 1/3 of a tank.
Otherwise, I started it up today after a couple days rest and it ran very
sluggishly for the first minute, then eased into normal operation (all flat
roads). I ordered a tank strainer and install that after the Biobor
treatment, if i can figure out how to do it.

Incidentally, the inline fuel filter is sparkling clear - not a speck of
crud in it. Another question - is it normal for there to be a release of
air (or vacuum) when I remove the fuel filler cap?

Thanks to all for your great ideas and input.

Yes but where was the good senator when the good times where rolling?
Did he stand up and warn about the dangers of uncontrolled lending?
Did he say that whilst home ownership is a good thing it is not for
everybody? Or is he using this to further his own political ambition?
If he is then he is worse than the jokers who took their eyes off the
ball in the first place.
However this statement underlines why there is a bailout, collective
guilt will be soothed with taxpayer money.
The other side of the coin is what would happen if there is no
bailout? Would there be big problems or are these problems perceived?
The stock market is largely made up of smoke and mirrors, people get
spooked and a stampede follows, even though there may not be any good
reason to do so. At least with this we sort of know what the problem
is and can predict the likely result.
My thoughts are that the bailout should be a long term loan, the
regulations should be tightened to ensure the idiots are weeded out
and taxes should be raised on the rich (best along the lines of a
higher luxury tax) to partly pay for all this stupidity. Far as I am
concerned it should have been the share holders of the greedy lenders
who should have said stop, as they have the brains.

to Quote Dr. Tom Cobern, Senator from OK regarding the millionaire
bailout bill : (or Billionaire bailout bill if you prefer)

This bill does not represent a new and sudden departure from free
market principles as much as it represents an emergency response to
congressional actions that have ignored free market principles, and
our Constitution, for decades. If anyone in Washington should offer
their resignation it should be the members of Congress who peddled
the fantasy of free home ownership without risk. No institution in
our country is more responsible for the myth or borrowing without
consequences than the United States Congress.

As much as members of Congress want to find scapegoats, the root of
this problem is political greed in Congress. Members of Congress from
both parties wanted short-term political credit for promoting home
ownership even though they were putting our entire economy at risk by
encouraging people to buy homes they couldn't afford. Then, instead
of conducting thorough oversight and correcting obvious problems with
unstable entities like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, members of
Congress chose to ignore the problem and distract themselves with
unprecedented amounts of pork-barrel spending.

Taxpayers who want to ensure that this doesn't happen again should
send a very clear message to Washington that it's time for Congress
to live within its means and restore the principles of limited
government and free markets that made this country great. I will do
everything in my power to ensure that this bill does not lead us down
a slippery slope of European style socialism and slow economic
growth. I will also promise taxpayers that I will do everything in my
power to block what I expect will be hundreds of attempts by
politicians in Washington to continue business-as-usual borrowing and
spending in the next Congress. In a time of crisis, American families
have to make hard choices between budget priorities. So should
Congress. If politicians want to create new programs they should
eliminate duplicative programs or reduce funding for less important
programs. The only way we can put this crisis behind us is for
Congress to rejoin the real world of budget choices and consequences
which, as we have seen in recent days, can be ignored for only so long.

This is one of the most coherent things I have seen coming out of the
general vicinity of the District of Columbia.
