Re: [MBZ] Oil analysis problem
Sorry about late response but mine is the non turbo 617.912 engine -no oil spray jets to cool pistons. I seemto recall that the oil pump thrust bearing that screws in at the top was quite worn when I overhauled the engine and was replaced with a new one. This thrust piece has a copper face that wears -perhaps this is the source of the copper? I think I will have to remove the current it and see if its worn On 28/10/2008, Loren Faeth [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Yes, and if the tops are not kept cool, oil can burn on the rings and in the grooves. The carbon on the rings certainly sound like a strong likelyhood. What kind of driving does this car see? Any long distance/high speed stuff? I do not believe it has anything to do with your rebuilding technique. I suspect you are right about the machine shop not having enough crosshatch to get good ring bedding. It's also extremely important to have a shop that is xperienced with MB - hopeflly yours was. When I rebuilt my 240D I replaced the sleeves and pistons/rings - I had to replace the pistons because several rings had broken and damaged the piston grooves/lands. Oil pressure is 2 bar at idle hot and it pegs at 3 immediately. Was thinking - what actually lubricates the bores? is it splash/leaks from the small end? What is also unusual is that when I overhauled the engine all the rings where carboned up onto the piston on all 5 pistons. I suspect the same might be happening again. I was not however my driveing that contributed to this as I had just bought the car when I overahuauled it. My other Om617's show now sighn of similar problems - I also overhauled my 300GD ( a crack in head that had been repaired by previous owner was starting to leak ) and thats going well. If it has white oil smoke whiledriving at a steady speed, rings are likely the problem - or something related to the pistons. A single oil sample is not as informative as several - preferably at intervals of 1500 miles or more. As Curt pointed out, results are best evaluated over time. Re: [MBZ] OT - home hot and cold water filters
Glad to get this information. I am interested in some sort of water filtration system. Our water smells and tastes like some sort of algae much of the year. I normally reuse gallon water jugs and take them to the store and use their reverse osmosis machine, then lug the four gallons up the hills on my bike to our house. Good workout. But when I dont have time, I fall back on the Brita pitcher. However, their paperwork only claims to remove taste and odor. Doesnt seem to claim to actually remove anything. Re: [MBZ] OT: Ever see 100 billion dollars?
It is really a bit more complicated than that. The system of malignant stupid policy decisions and favoring the folks in power [foreign or native] did not arise out of the culture all by itself. The shorthand version is that the colonial system stayed in place for the most part and the folks at the top [colonial powers with some experience in national affairs and international relations while raping the country] were replaced with locals who had worked for them and who kept most of the structure, but had none of the international or even national experience while they were raping the country. It is a mess now and can be blamed on them if you want, but the situation did not arise all by itself. Re: [MBZ] 85 300CD running on and on and on...
Well, the dealership diagnosed that a leaky vacuum servo for the shutoff under the dash near ignition switch. They need to remove the cluster to get at it. Has anyone ever heard of this? The _switch_ is behind there. They can go bad, especially if they've gotten filled with oil. Perhaps the dealership's standard repair is to flush out the lines and possibly replace the vacuum switch whenever replacing the shutoff actuator. The switch often fails if oil gets into the line from a bad shutoff valve. We had to replace the one on my brother's 76 W115, so it's not unheard of. Easy fix, just pop out the cluster, unscrew the switch, install new one, re-install cluster. Maybe an hour's labor. Re: [MBZ] OT: Ever see 100 billion dollars? Colonialism and such, still OT
Rich, I am far from an expert in the situation of pre-colonial Africa, and the 'nations' were divided up in a conference room [in London IIRC] without any consideration of topography or community relationships, but basically the situation in any area [don't think of 'nations' in pre-colonial times] was that if people could grow or find food they lived there, and when they could not get enough food they moved and found or fought for a new place to live where they could get food [you do like run-on sentences I hope]. Hunger was not as big a problem because there was no one forcing them to grow crops they could not eat so $$ could be earned by export. The taxes imposed by colonial rule were more to force people to become part of the system than to generate direct revenue, and people who could continue their traditional way of life had no need of money except to pay the taxes. A Kenyan friend who owns some land outside of Nairobi told me that if he were ever to plant an export crop [coffee and cocoa are the main ones there, I think] on his land he was legally bound to never grow anything but that, even if he were starving. The infrastructure was created to bring natural and agricultural resources to the ports for export [look at the rail system of colonial India and Haiti also], and the enforcement of export production left a lot of people without the means to support themselves - thus having to purchase food that they once could grow for themselves. Ghana is another interesting story [one of my professors was a tribal chieftain from there, with a PhD from NYU]. HUGE natural resources, but they were not of interest to the native peoples, and in many ways [almost every way] have turned out to be a detriment to the population. Colonial powers abused the population [to 'civilize' them, of course] and extract gems that were valued elsewhere. Is there some God-given right to do anything to native peoples so that foreign desires can be satisfied? That is the $.25 answer, and leaves out probably 75% of the full story. Much of the same story can be told of our taking of land and resources from native American tribes [who did the same thing to other native American tribes, who had done it to others] to create the United States. I suppose the underlying question is always can we stop the process when we get what we want, or should we expect others to take over from us. We were the Taliban to native Americans, I guess. Do also realize that it is not just Africa that is affected with this sort of thing. Great quantities of the best agricultural land in Central America and the islands is owned by huge trans-nationals [I only use the term 'multinational' when I forget how misleading it is], and areas that once fed local populations can sit idle for years if the price for bananas [or other export crops] means the folks in the board room won't make enough profit planting. If you have another several pages of listening available you can investigate the role of the church in colonialism. Rather an interesting story there also, and does not exactly square with Christian values. Down from soapbox, but you sort of asked for it. [MBZ] Intermittent Temp Gauge
The Temp gauge on my 1990 350SDL sometimes jumps from it's normal 85C to being pegged past 120C. No a slow ramp-up, like the temp is actually rising, but an a instaneous jump. 1'st time it scared the crap out of me and shut her down quickly and checkednot hot all and plenty of AF. Just as fast as it jumped past 120C, it returned to 85Cafter going over a small bump in the road. Now, I can almost make it jump on command by giving the dash a short wrap with my knuckles. My thought was a loose connection, but I've been told that the gauges sometimes go bad...That true? Noware the instrument clusters (Temp, Oil Pressure, Gas Gauge) on the 350SDL's the same as the older 300SD/SDL's? You could probably fit a Lazy Boy in there, though it might not meet code. I don't think you would have to worry about it sliding backwards with the super acceleration I sure I will have ;-) , but forward could be a problem. Maybe you could use the footrest as sort of a swing up emergency stop so you won't hit the steering wheel in case someone pulls out in front of you. I'm sure the experience of getting it from when sits to road worthy will amply challenge your resourcefulness [and probably your bank account, but we won't talk about that]. Wish it could be me. Re: [MBZ] Intermittent Temp Gauge
Angelo, I had a similar experience shortly after I bought my 92 500E in '06. Turned out to be a loose connection at the back of the temp gauge in the instrument cluster. Tightened the connection, no more problem. If you have one of those laser temp gauges, when the gauge reads 120, point it at various hoses, etc., in the engine compartment to verify or discount what the guage says. The wires behind the gauges sometimes get pinched (like mine), come loose or the solder breaks. It's most likely one of those 3 or the ground wire connection. Re: [MBZ] OT - home hot and cold water filters
I suffered through several years of constant water softener breakdowns before the local water guru suggested a whole house filter at the point where all water comes into the house. The biggest part of this guy's business is doing water system for semiconductor wafer fabs, so he's inclined to over-engineer everything. What I ended up with was a big honkin high flow 1 micron filter ahead of the water softener. No problems since then. I live in an old part of town where the water lines are 80+ years old and self-destructing, so we see all kinds of particulates in the water. Course it costs me about $150 /year when I do have to replace the filter element. I'd say money well spent. Wish I'd done it years earlier. No no no, I have lots of fun winding you up Roger and it doesn't cost much. Anyway the problem I see with sporty cars is that the only place you can use them to their potential is on a race track, if you try to use em in anger on public road this is what happens http://www.news.com.au/adelaidenow/story/0,,24564978-5006301,00.html Even the Northern territory has placed a speed limit of 140k on the open road, too many drunks wiping themselves out I suppose. However if I was ever to get serious about motor sports it would be the two wheeled variety, racing cars are for girls. Although a challenge would be to see how cheaply a race car could be built and raced, as usually the team with the most bucks wins. I guess what I am trying to say is that I am all in favor of grassroots motor sport but a bunch of rich posers playing with their toys does not appeal to me. (For kaleb prices!) You could probably fit a Lazy Boy in there, though it might not meet code. Re: [MBZ] OT - cordless screw drivers
I purchased the Bosch screwdriver - it really is a very nice tool - LOTS of torque, great battery life (so far), very ergonomic, highly recommended, even though it is assembled in Malaysia. Rich was right on with his recommendation - Thanks! I looked on Lowes' web site, and yes, they do sell Bosch, but the site said that my local store didn't carry them. We went there anyway, to look at what they might have (and counter tops), and they they were - one on display, and another in a sealed box! Can't trust the web site - it's not tied to a real-time database. -- OK Don, KD5NRO Norman, OK There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely games. - Ernest Hemingway '90 300D (Rattled), '92 300D (Saber), ''97 Ply Grand Voyager (Vincent van-go) ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] OT - cordless screw drivers
Thanks for that. I was at Lowes today, they had 2 batteries on the cut-out shelf, originally $45 each for $10 each so I snagged both. Now I have enough power to run the thing about 3 hours and drive about 3000 screws. I'll be all screwed up now! --R OK Don wrote: I purchased the Bosch screwdriver - it really is a very nice tool - LOTS of torque, great battery life (so far), very ergonomic, highly recommended, even though it is assembled in Malaysia.
