Agreed. In typical fermentation, the yeast does not make ethanol. It
makes an enzyme that converts the sugar to ethanol. I don't see how
that process would result in a diesel fuel.

The Nüvi 360 is a good unit. I was looking at that but decided to get the

My budget is 200 dollars. I would like to buy in a store so if it

The best prices I found were at Amazon.com.

I was told that the maps supplied with the units are not up to date.
That to update them it will cost an additional 70-100 dollars, not a
free update to the purchaser. Is that true?

The maps most likely will be out-of-date, but with the Garmin units, you
get one free map update in the 30 days after you register the unit (which
you should do to update the GPS' operating system).

Well, I have concluded that the only MB's I am comfortable in are the 124 and
126. I don't want a 126 gasser because of the gas mileage. I would love to
have another 300D 2.5 (want to trade me for a very nice Volvo?), but the prices
on them are crazy high. I can't even find one for the same price you paid for
mine unless it has over 300,000 miles and is in pretty crappy shape
cosmetically. The 124 gassers are cheaper right now, but I haven't found many
nice ones. I am still looking for a 124 or 126 that meets all my requirements.
But in the interim, I thought I might be able to get this Crown Vic cheap and
drive it for a while. I don't keep cars for very long. The longest I have ever
driven a car was your 300D 2.5 and that was for 3 years.

[MBZ] Rusty's boat payment

To make up for sourcing calipers locally I ordered UCAs and shocks for my 240D

I'm reasonably sure when I take it for inspection on Friday its going to fail.
The idea is to have the parts on hand to swap in so I can take it back Saturday.

The state of MA is really ugly about inspection. I registered the car last
Friday thinking I'd have time to get the brakes done and get inspection on
Saturday. WRONG. Now I need to get it inspected by Friday (7 days from the day
of registration) or they'll charge me a fine...
Once it fails inspection I have 60 days to try again but I can't legally drive
it an inch from the inspection station once it fails. In practice I'm sure I

Re: [MBZ] Camera Stores

2008-11-12 Thread LWB250
I consider myself a prosumer photographer, having shot medium format stock
work for a number of years. BH is good if you're OK with buying over the
Internet - they do a great job.

If you want to go the used route, KEH is definitely the one, as King has done a
great job with their reputation of grading very, very conservatively. I have
bought a fair amount of gear from them over the years and never been
disappointed. That being said, their prices for used equipment are a little
high.

If you want used stuff, consider buying off eBay from a seller with a good
feedback rating that allows you to return the equipment if not as described or
defective. The used market is literally in the toilet these days, and you can
get some incredible deals right now. I was just looking at the prices on
medium format Mamiya gear the other day, and was shocked at how low it was
going. The whole bag of Mamiya gear I own is worth about 10% of the new value
these days. Thank goodness I wasn't looking to sell!

I highly recommend the folks at BDC Camera Repair in Madison, WI for any
calibration, cleaning or repairs. They do a fantastic job, have a good
turnaround and are very customer oriented.

country home status symbol look to it. But, I think the 124 is better looking

Yes, and I checked all the fuses last spring when it was doing
this. If memory serves, these components are on different circuits,
but fail simultaneously. SO maybe it is a ground problem under the dash?

Last night was raining and near freezing. I want to try working on
it inside, in the dry, with light, and preferably when it is not freezing.

I found a couple of places on the MAS screen where the plastic was
broken, but hanging at an angle, which could cause turbulence. Also,
the oring to seal the MAS to the air filter box had been out of
place, which might also cause some turbulence. I am assuming that
turbulent flow might cause a false reading. We will try running it
today. When i worked on the car this summer, I did not remove the
air cleaner top from the MAS body. If I had, I would have found the
oring out of place.

Is there any way to test the MAS out of the car with simple
equipment? Ohmmeter or voltmeter...

[MBZ] WW2 Mercedes Aircraft Engine

2008-11-12 Thread LarryT
Hi all -
I watched a show today* that told about the famous ME109 of WW2 fame - they
said the ending was a MB Inverted V12

What's the logic behind using an Inverted V configuration? The Vs tend to be
pretty tight it appears.

Is it to give the designers a better shape to work with?

HP was quoted as being 1100-1400 depending on specific model -

Well,
I have concluded that the only MB's I am comfortable in are the 124 and
126.  I don't want a 126 gasser because of the gas mileage.  I would
love to have another 300D 2.5 (want to trade me for a very nice
Volvo?), but the prices on them are crazy high.  I can't even find one
for the same price you paid for mine unless it has over 300,000 miles
and is in pretty crappy shape cosmetically.  The 124 gassers are
cheaper right now, but I haven't found many nice ones. I am still
looking for a 124 or 126 that meets all my requirements. But in the
interim, I thought I might be able to get this Crown Vic cheap and
drive it for a while. I don't keep cars for very long.  The longest I
have ever driven a car was your 300D 2.5 and that was for 3 years.

[MBZ] WW2 Daimler Benz Aircraft Engine

2008-11-12 Thread Loren Faeth
The USAF museum at Dayton O had a German ME109 engine sitting on the
floor when i was there 20 some years ago. It was an amazing engine
to look at. Compared to the contemporary engines from other
countries, the engine was a work of art. The engine is NOT Mercedes
Benz. They were built by Daimler Benz, and the engine tag clearly
said Daimler Benz.

They are indeed a narrow inverted V design. There was no comparable
HP US engine/airframe combination, until later in the war: 1943 to
1944. The (GM) Allison was also a v12, and it was contemporary,
first being used on a large scale on the Curtiss P-40. The English
had the Rolls Royce v12, as used in the Hurricane, the Spitfire and
several other airframes. These engines did not have the power/weight
ratio or the HP of the DB engine until late in the war, as I previously stated.

The Germans used the DB v12 engine and a lightened version of the
ME109 to set altitude and speed records form 1937 to 1939. Many of
those records stood for many many years.

Most of these three V type engines used a dry sump system to provide
positive oil pressure in any position I know the Allison and the DB
did. I am not sure about the RR engine, but I believe it was also dry sump.

MB content: the MB 6.9 used a dry sump oil system.

I can't remember the M number of the aircraft engine. I do remember
that it was one of the most amazing and beautiful works of industrial
art I have ever seen.

We have no inspections here in Kansas for yearly licensing (I wish we did,
there are some very unsafe cars on the road). The only inspection we have is
if you bring a car in from another state, it has to be inspected. But, it is
not a safety inspection, they just check to make sure it isn't stolen and they
check to make sure the various vin plates all match.

In Missouri (where I am from), they do have safety inspections. But, there was
a system (at least in Springfield). The crappier the place looked, the more
likely you were to pass. When I was at the dealership, we did inspections and
I felt like the guys really did them. I remember failing people who just went
to the bad part of town and got an inspection. I had a car when I was 17 that
I knew wouldn't pass, so I went to one of those places. Inspections were only
$7 back then. The guy asked for my money, gave me the sticker and told me to
honk the horn before I left. That was the extent of his inspection.

Mercedes' T80 land speed record car, designed by aircraft engineer Josef Mickl
with assistance from Ferdinand Porsche and top German Grand Prix racing driver
Hans Stuck, incorporated the third prototype DB 603. It ran on pure alcohol
with MW injection and was tuned to 3,000 hp   enough, it was believed, to
propel the aerodynamic three-axle T80 up to 750 km/h on the Dessau autobahn in
January 1940 during Rekord Woche (Record/Speed Week). Due to the outbreak of
the war in September 1939, the T80 (nicknamed Schwarz Vogel, Black Bird)
never raced. The DB 603 engine was removed from the vehicle for use in fighter
aircraft.

Interesting.

There are a couple advantages to an inverted V engine -- the cowling is easier
to streamline with the widest part of the engine closer to the centerline or
lower, as the shape can fair into the wings better. You can easily get hot

There are disadvantages, too -- induction can be a real pain (the DB used fuel
injection which fixed that -- and a family friend of ours made the parts for
the original system in the late 30's -- his father died before he got the
patents and RR took it over, then let the Germans at it!). Oil handling is a
problem as there have to be recovery channels along the cylinder banks to get
the oil out (they are all dry sump systems) and locating the propellor gearing

If the Nazis had developed high octane fuel, we'd have been in much worse shape

Wish my '87 300D had THAT kind of 603 under the hood!

I've read about this before. It is absolutely amazing. Sometimes they use yeast

Agreed. In typical fermentation, the yeast does not make ethanol. It
makes an enzyme that converts the sugar to ethanol. I don't see how
that process would result in a diesel fuel.

2008-11-12 Thread dave walton
If the yeast is consuming the sugar and storing oil in it's cell
structure, then we are not talking fermentation. That's basically what
the Algae people are working on. There are better/cheaper things to
feed microbes than sugar. If they are using the yeast to produce an
enzyme that converts sugar to diesel, they are competing with
foodstocks, which is political suicide. Technically interesting, but
not a solid business plan. Don't get me wrong - we need more research
like this. Just don't count on it to solve the problem any time soon.
Hopefully someone will stumble across a process that actually works in
the real world.

Think oil-eating microbes used to clean up oil spills...sort of in reverse.

Agreed. In typical fermentation, the yeast does not make ethanol. It
makes an enzyme that converts the sugar to ethanol. I don't see how
that process would result in a diesel fuel.

Great story. Usually people can get along pretty well, but governments have
problems. I suspect it is much like the difference between meeting/passing
someone on the sidewalk and passing the same person in a car. People are
often much nicer in person than when they have some anonymity and are
surrounded by sheet metal or 'policy.'.

Subject: [MBZ] flare tool

'Reminds me of a night in Greenland in 1978. I was Director of Engineering
at Sondrestrom Air Base, now known as Kangerlussuaq. Early evening I was in
my room reading and listening to classical music; phone rang; Base Commander
asked me to go over to Officer's Club and talk to a NASA guy about a problem
with one of their aircraft. They were there with a Cessna Citation and a
Boeing 707 doing high altitude atmospheric research with National Science
Foundation.

At the club, Base Commander introduced me to the NASA guy. Base Commander
knew that I had also been an aircraft and engine mechanic (maintenance crew
chief) before I was commissioned and went to B-52's. NASA guy had just
discovered a problem with the braking (or steering - can't be sure which
now) system on forward landing gear of their Cessna Citation. A small,
U-shaped piece of stainless steel 3000 psi hydraulic line was cracked and
leaking. They needed to fly one more mission with the Cessna to be finished
for the season. If they couldn't find or make a replacement for the part
locally, they were going to fly the 707 to Los Angeles and back over the
next coupla days to get a part. After the NASA guy described the problem, I
told him that I may be able to help - I'd certainly try - I don't give up
very easily.

We jumped in my truck and went to the hanger to look at the leaking part.
It was a U-shaped piece of 1/4 inch stainless steel tubing with each leg of
the U less than 2 inches long with a flare and a compression nut on each
end. I vaguely remembered that I had seen some 1/4 inch stainless steel
tubing in a hanger that was used by the NY Air National Guard for their
summer C-130 operations on the Greenland ice cap. We removed the offending
part and took it with us to the National Guard hanger. In the hanger, I
could see a bundle of the appropriate stainless steel tubing several feet
away on the inside of a shop secured by an 8 feet tall chainlink fence
topped by strands of barbed wire. We drug a work table from across the
hanger up to the fence; I jumped up on the table and went over the fence
onto another table inside the fence, walked across the shop, got a piece of
the tubing and stuck it thru the fence to the NASA guy. 'Back up on the
table inside the shop and back over the fence.

Still not sure we'd be able to make a proper part, I stopped by to ask my
Danish civilian contractor chief engineer if he may like to help. Years
before, he'd been chief engineer on Danish sea-going merchant vessels. He
was VERY enthusiastic as we rushed to our Base Civil Engineering ground
equipment shop, hoping to find the tools to help us make the appropriate
part. When we walked into the shop, we interrupted a card game of several
Danish civilian contractor workmen/mechanics. When they realized what we
were doing, they were all anxious to help and rushed to find three or four
plumbing flaring tools in this shop and the plumbing shop nearby. These
tools were for copper tubing, of course, but we forged ahead.

Soon, there were at least half a dozen well-experienced mechanics in
friendly competion to make, bend, flare, etc., the perfect replacement part
for the Cessna. Special problems, of course, were: the 180 degree bend in
such a short piece of stainless tubing, short sides of the U leaving little
room to form the flare on each end and have the compression nut in the right
place on each side also. The replacement had to be exactly like the
original - couldn't be longer because of landing gear retraction
restrictions (space in the wheel well). After several tries, we had an
acceptable match visually. 'Rushed to the aircraft and installed it for a
PERFECT fit. The aircraft flew its mission the next day and flew home to
Los Angeles the next.

'Just a small part of my very enjoyable foreign relations experience and an
excellent example of Danish mechanics' innovation and desire to excell.
'Much like our Jim Cathey.

Wilton

I had a nice snap on that would do normal and double flares. They
only have double flare dies for us sizes, not metric, but I was able
to make double flares with practice.

The last time i needed double flares, I used my cheap flare tool and
just bought the 1/8 double flare die from snappy. it worked to make
double flares for MB 110 brake lines. I have never seen a tool that
makes 37degree JIC flares. The only place I have seen the JIC flare
used is hydraulics, and you don't want

My advice for everybody who hasn't yet driven an MB wagon is to make sure you
get the opportunity. I've never driven a 124 wagon but the 123 wagon is by far
the smoothest car I've ever driven. The 300TD is a bit pokey off the line, the
turbo (on mine anyway) took a second to spool but what a wonderful highway car.

When my wife and I make our cross country drive a 300TD is the #1 preferred car
by both of us.

I think you can use those lenses on the digital models but they won't be
autofocus and all that, so you will have to fiddle with them. Old
Minolta lenses fit the Sony DSLRs, as the Sony is a remake of the

Subject: [MBZ] WW2 Mercedes Aircraft Engine

 Hi all -
I watched a show today* that told about the famous ME109 of WW2 fame -
they said the ending was a MB Inverted V12

What's the logic behind using an Inverted V configuration? The Vs tend to
be pretty tight it appears.

Is it to give the designers a better shape to work with?

HP was quoted as being 1100-1400 depending on specific model -

This sort of thing is all too common there are tons of people who have been

Lesson #1 If it seems to good to be true it probably is.

Lesson #2 When dealing with a new company do a little research first. I bought

cheaper than profeel.com where I usually buy. A quick Google showed that the
other retailer (might have been fotoconnection for that matter) had tons of

Re: [MBZ] WW2 Daimler Benz Aircraft Engine

The MBCA Star magazine had a nice article with photos and diagrams on this
engine some years back (maybe about 2002?). I was impressed with the method
for installing/removing the cylinders. The outside base (which was on top)
of the cylinder was threaded and a BIG nut held it in place. A special
wrench turned a worm gear to rotate the nut.

These engines did not have the power/weight
ratio or the HP of the DB engine until late in the war, as I previously
stated.

Algae plant to open on S. Ute land Organisms will be used to make fuel for

Green energy - literally - is coming to Southwest Colorado.

Solix Biofuels announced Tuesday that it will start construction on an algae
fuel plant early next year near Ignacio. The plant will be built in two
phases on a 10-acre site on the Southern Ute Indian Tribe reservation.

That is just a stepping stone to building large-scale production, which is
our ultimate goal, said Solix CEO Doug Henston.

Henston did not say how many jobs the plant would bring, but the number will
be small at first.

Gov. Bill Ritter greeted the news and said the next generation will consume
energy in ways current Americans can't imagine.

Fortunately, the creative, ingenuous and determined researchers at Solix
can not only imagine those ways, they are making them a reality. This is
also great news for Southwest Colorado, demonstrating that the New Energy
Economy is benefiting communities all across the state, Ritter said in a
news release.

The Solix operation will be different from the biodiesel plant operated by
San Juan Bioenergy in Dove Creek. That plant uses locally grown sunflower,
safflower and canola, and it currently produces oil for human and animal
food, but not motor fuel.

The Solix-Southern Ute operation will produce an oil feedstock that can be
refined into diesel fuel.

The market for diesel feedstock is huge, Henston said, and Solix and its
Southern Ute partners hope to grow hundreds of acres of algae some day -
possibly at the Ignacio site.

The plant will use high-tech photobioreactors to grow algae - essentially,
pond scum.

We don't refer to it as that. We refer to it very affectionately, Henston
said.

Biodiesel plants that use canola oil can get about 150 gallons per acre per
year, Henston said. But algae grow much faster. Solix is producing 1,500
gallons per acre per year at its prototype site in Fort Collins, and Henston
hopes to double that growth rate.

The Solix plant will capture carbon dioxide from a natural gas-processing
plant near Ignacio. Algae need plenty of carbon dioxide and sunlight to
grow, and both are available on the Southern Ute reservation, Henston said.

Henston doesn't call Solix's technology carbon-neutral. But the plant will
capture carbon from the gas facility that would have gone straight into the
atmosphere and give it a second use as a motor fuel. Also, some studies show
that biodiesel emits fewer greenhouse gases than regular petroleum diesel,
Henston said.

Southern Ute Alternative Energy LLC provided some of the $5 million
investment for the Ignacio plant. Other investors include London-based I2BF
Venture Capital, oil refiner Valero Energy Corp., and Fort Collins-based
Bohemian Investments. The same investors also committed $10.5 million to
fund Solix operations Tuesday.

Solix was founded in 2006 as a spinoff from Colorado State University. Its
headquarters is in Fort Collins.

There just isn't enough info in the article. Annoying. Reminds me of an

Technically interesting,

Re: [MBZ] junker

2008-11-12 Thread Rich Thomas
It's just another form of revenue generation in MA, gotta cover all the
graft and corruption. I got yelled at once when my sticker was expired
by a cop who was monitoring a bunch of phone company picketers who
decided it was a good idea to take their picketing to the road leading
out of our office park at 5PM (there was some kind of phone company
office in the park, why they decided to PO a bunch of other people there
never made sense to me, I guess it is a union thing, like the phone
company isn't hated enough).

He was gonna give me a hard time or a ticket or something, until the guy
behind me got tired of waiting for the picketing morons and the equally
ignorant cop (making his $40/hr on detail work, min 3 hr) to let him get
home, did an end-around and almost ran down a couple of the oppressed
workers (most of whom seemed to be rather obese and nicely dressed, as
well as Filene's Basement and Lane Bryant could do anyway). I saw my
opening and bolted when they all scattered. The path opened up for
everyone else at that point too.

Terak,

It got banged up (again) in an encounter with a Jersey barrier.  The front
inner fender wall was crumpled in about 6 in at the bumper mount and the local
shop said it would be $$$ to put in on the rack and pull it out.  I considered
just mounting a new outer funder over the bent inner fender but decided against
it.

It was an incredible car, I hate to see it go.  Will keep the motor however to
put in the 72 220D.

I can do it at the switch itself, but then the reverse light switch won't

Yeap around here in NC they are not nearly as bad, my truck has not been

Note it is not that my cars won't pass inspection, rather I am pretty anal

I'm reasonably sure when I take it for inspection on Friday its going to
fail. The idea is to have the parts on hand to swap in so I can take it back
Saturday.

The state of MA is really ugly about inspection. I registered the car last
Friday thinking I'd have time to get the brakes done and get inspection on
Saturday. WRONG. Now I need to get it inspected by Friday (7 days from the
day of registration) or they'll charge me a fine...

I used citric (bought for cleaning the MB cooling systems) on more old
brass fitting today - it removed all the white 'lime' deposits in half
an hour - leaving the fittings looking better than the additional new
one I bought while they were soaking. This solution was probably
rather strong, but it left me with no doubt that the stuff will remove
any lime deposits in our engines..

Another $100 lesson:

In 1958, I was a B-47E maintenance crew chief (USAF E-3) paid a grand total
of $220 per month. I had a '51 Chevrolet; 'saw a nice-looking, excellent
condition '56 Chevy 4-door sedan on stealer's used car lot; 'made a deal one
day to trade; 'told salesman I'd bring 'im $100 down payment next day. I
worked all night that night getting my aircraft ready for very early morning
launch. Problems with the aircraft delayed launch 'til midafternoon. By
the time I stopped by the stealership I was very tired, had not eaten since
the night before, 'had a headache, etc. As I pulled into stealership yard
near late afternoon, I saw the salesman with whom I had made the trade deal,
pulled up beside and handed him a $100 dollar bill and said, Down payment
on that '56 Chevrolet. I'll stop by tomorrow afternoon to pick it up. He
replied, OK, I'll have it ready. Next afternoon, when picking up the
new car, I saw that the $100 I had given the salesman the day before was
not on the bill of sale. I asked the salesman, Where's the $100 I gave you
yesterday afternoon? The SOB replied, What $100? 'Learned my lesson
well.

The 126 market seems to be in the toilet. $2000 looks to buy a pretty nice
car.

Totally true! My 1983 300SD isn't worth too much more than the $1300 I paid
for it even though it now has a new lower right ball joint, all new brakes,
new exhaust header, and way better front seats. I would have to spend more
to fix the pached-up non-leaking radiator, dead AC compressor, and dead lock
pump than I would get back from the sale of the car.

My experience is with 80s diesel Rabbits, I had three. I did struts many times
and only needed the cheap (maybe $25) spring compressor. You don't use it
until the strut is off the car. I clamped it in a vice, chained the spring,
compressed a few inches and changed the shocks.

Easy to get of and on and easy to RR the shocks. One of the two bottom
mounting bolts is eccentric and is adjustable. I always made a precise scribe
mark for reassemble and got away without an alignment.

The Jetta may not be the same, if it is, go for it.

A friend at work as an '01 Jetta 1.8T. Nice car but the shocks/struts
have had it. Today doing the bounce test it failed miserably.
Rusty has shocks for $62 apiece, Bilstein Touring class or
Sport for $20 more each and HD for more than that. I'm thinking
Touring class is correct but my buddy is nervous.

I'm also thinking struts require a spring compressor and neither he
nor I want to mess with that. He's even more novice at mechanicing than I am
but I'm thinking the shocks are something we can accomplish. Any guidance
from you crowd?

My wife had to do a rotation at the Manchester VA hosp (The Manch), it
gave her considerable insight into NH culture. And the Manch isn't
even upstate too far. Between that and Boston City Hospital you get a
very good view of the wonders and promise of socialized medicine.
