2009-03-03 Thread Rich Thomas
That's another analog/digital issue for cable -- there are still a lot
of analog channels on cable, even many old TVs can "tune" those channels
in, but to get the digital you need a box, and many people don't want
the box, and the digital "premium" channels are scrambled or compressed
to keep from bootlegging it. New TVs can tune in the digital and HD
broadcasts that are sent in the clear on cable (e.g., your local
broadcast channels), but for some reason not many (if any) TVs have the
ability to accept tuner cards (cable companies resistance). And no
computer tuners with cable cards

The cable companies would like to go all digital to use that analog
spectrum too, but that is a whole nuther bag of worms.

Satellite all needs a box to decode their digital scrambled transmissions.

I have yet to see in print any details regarding who initiated and who will
be benefitting financially from the conversion to digital TV in the USA.
Being not much of a reader for many years, I made a promise to myself that I
would rectify this once I retired. I had cable TV many years ago but gave
it up as I found I wasn't watching much of what wasn't already available on
network TV stations. Now that I'm retired and living somewhat in the
mountains where TV signals are rather weak and the housing development where
I reside does not permit outside antennae, I decided that I would live with
the two watchable TV stations I could receive using my indoor amplified
antenna as my primary purpose for TV is the evening news. Surprise, both of
these TV stations were worse-totally unwatchable when the digital TV
converter box was hooked up (Note: This is something that they do not
advertise), so I had to resort to obtaining cable TV. The nasty part came
when I attempted to return the digital TV converter box to Radio Shack as I
got a "that's impossible" and "rabbit ears are for rabbits" argument from
the owner. It wasn't until a lady cashier interceded and indicated that
she'd handle the return that I was actually able to return the digital TV
converter box. I wonder if a portion of the monthly bill all of us who are
forced into either Dish or cable TV are paying is going to whoever is
responsible for this conversion? I previously would shop very seldom at RS,
but now will go purposely go elsewhere.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Programmable Remote Reviews?

2009-03-03 Thread Redghost
I have a Harmony. It works fine, but being an older model is sort of
wonky to get control over multiple device usage.

Example. You can set up so that multiple devices power up together -
Watch TV - which powers up the HDTV, DVR, Sat Box, Sound system - All
fine and good, but to change channel, you have to swap back to DVR or
Sat Box. Volume up needs swap to that. No good integration on the
older remote. Maybe the newer LCD remote will do.

Cool thing is that you just go to the web site, enter you hardware and
how you want it to link together to do things. It sucks all the
codes, pops them in line and you can do one button launch.

Example - Master bath video - TV, sat box, DVD, lighting - Can tell it
I want DVD, so it powers up only TV and DVD, lowers lighting. Want
TV, same thing but Sat box, no DVD. Music, just DVD player through
speakers.

One of my partners has a HUGE AV system at his house that was
installed several years ago - stereo, DISH network, HDTV
(projection), DVD, VCR, etc., etc. Along with all this hardware are
about 20 remotes, or so it seems.

When we go over there to watch a movie or something on TV, I think
it's just serendipity that he gets everything working together, or
so it seems. He's not a techie sort of guy either, which just
compounds things.

I told his wife that I would research these things for her and
recommend one (that I will no doubt be setting up and installing,
I'm sure.)

The 400W seems to work just great.

Not sure if Rusty has both cords.

I know the sound you're talking about and I listen for it too.
