Now I know why my Briggs Quantum push mower sounds like the governor is set too
slow. 3100RPM? I could swear my Quantum manual says 3600, but it sounds like
3000 or less when running full throttle.

Curt's job will get to be real difficult if the shaft diameter isn't the same as
the original, or if the shaft length isn't close.

If that Briggs motor really does make 6.5hp at 3100rpm with no exhaust or air
filter, then with some port work, a header, and an increase in rpm it might do
8-9hp. OTOH, if it's spec'd at 3100 rpm, it might have plastic cam lobes and
weak valve springs that would let the valves float before 3600rpm.

What kind of engine is on the Snapper now, and what parts can't you find?

something to do with the manufactuing scale of a giant like Ford and
relatively small fry like MB and Porsche? I guess I'm wondering why MB builds a
$50k+ sedan ($80K+ in the case of
a W140) and it's not perfect in every way? Same for Porsche - $80K + and
they end up with problems that their road tests and dyno tests should have
located. Perhaps Ford has major problems but they are relatively cheap to fix
and
thus we don't hard about them?

Its funny that you mention that because I am learning that the 1996-2001 Crown
vic/Grand Marquis did have a problem that came from the factory. It is not a
huge deal, but they have a plastic intake gasket that fails around 60-100K
miles. There was a lawsuit over it and Ford settled by extending a service
agreement (warranty) to refund the cost of repair or perform the repair free of
charge for 7 years and 80,000 miles.

Unfortunately, people don't think that way - except for all of us on this list
and the few other folks that have actually figured out, it is a LOT cheaper to
drive old cheap cars, then it is to drive new cars under warranty. Most people
don't think about how much maintenance, care, improvement they could do with
the same $200-400 they spend on a monthly payment. I think for most cars, the
point at which it doesn't make sense to keep maintaining an old car is one
single repair exceeds the total value of the car. Now, there are certainly
exceptions. I can see someone putting a $2500 transmission into a $2000 old
Mercedes if the rest of the car is in really good shape and they are reasonably
sure to drive the car long enough to justify the transmission cost.

Fair enough, I suppose it would either negatively impact the seating
arrangement or rear weight distribution... ;)

As to those two engines, the former is too small (I've got an 8hp now) and the
latter is more expensive than the 11hp Honda alternative...

a new lower passenger's side ball joint and front pads.

Right now? Nothing... Out in the yard is a totally clapped out (zero
compression) 1967 Briggs 8hp. No rebuild parts are available and while I could
pull the piston and measure it I bought a parts machine instead. The parts
machine has a Tecumseh TVXL 195, about '88 vintage I think. It needs a carb
rebuild which I bought a kit for yesterday and will install this afternoon. The
only worry right now is that I took the carb apart last fall and may have lost
a governor spring...

Now I know why my Briggs Quantum push mower sounds like the governor is set too
slow. 3100RPM? I could swear my Quantum manual says 3600, but it sounds like
3000 or less when running full throttle.

Curt's job will get to be real difficult if the shaft diameter isn't the same
as
the original, or if the shaft length isn't close.

Mitch.

Just get them a J-body (Cavalier, Sunfire) or N-body (Grand Am etc).
Everybody knows how to work on them, and salvage parts are everywhere.

There was a 2000 Alero 4 cylinder automatic one owner with 90k on it for $2600

It's summer, you need plaid short pants (belt and suspenders), striped
shirt, black knee socks, and sandals, with a funny hat and those huge
black shades that fit over your glasses. Put on your left blinker,
drive in the left lane at 50, and put it off before you change lanes.

I happen to have a very nice 1993 Cadillac Sedan Deville with only 124,000
miles for under $3000. It's a sweet car!

As far as cheap reliable cars from GM, I would suggest any of the W body cars
with the 3800 engine or the 3.1L engines. I would avoid the 2.4 liter engines
in the smallest GM cars. The W body cars are the Grand Prix, Monte Carlo, or
Olds Cutlass Supreme. The H body cars are also very reliable and some of
them can be had very cheaply. These are: Buick LeSabre, Pontiac Bonneville,
Oldsmobile 88. NOW, there is one caveat to the 3800. You need to buy one
earlier than 96 and later than 2000. The intervening years have a problem with
the intake gasket. It fails and you have to replace the upper and lower
gaskets. If that has already been done, then you are golden and those years
are excellent. I also really like the Oldsmobile Intrigue, but in that case,
you want the 3.5L (shortstar) not the 3800 unless you get a 2001 or newer.
The C body cars are the Oldsmobile 98, the Buick Park Avenue and the Cadillac
Sedan Deville. I don't really think you are going to buy a Cadillac, but if
you are, DO NOT buy a 96-99 with the Northstar - they have serious headgasket
and oil consumption problems that were not fixed until 2000). The 91-95 Sedan
Devilles had the 4.9L engine (trusty old pushrod). It was, in my opinion, the
best engine Cadillac made. Otherwise the Olds 98 (big Grandpa car) and the
Park Avenue are very nice cars.

The Pontiac Grand Am isn't bad if you get the 6 cyl.

The only thing I know about Fords, is that you can find a used Taurus cheap.
They made millions of them, so the prices are down and the parts are cheap.
1998 was a body style change and engine improvement. If you can go as new as
2002-03, the 6 cyl engine was once again improved and the reliability is pretty
high.

It is hard to go wrong with a Honda. I prefer the Accords for size and resale
value. 1990-92 was my favorite body style and they were very good cars. That
is probably too old for what you want. In 1996 or 97, Honda improved the
timing belt, and gears/tensioners and the maintenance schedule was bumped up to
105,000 miles. So, that might be a good model year to start with.

I have heard good things about the Mazda 626 for several years.

Camry's are nice, but boring and they hold their resale value that they tend to
look like crap, by the time they are cheap.

[MBZ] OT: I hate small engines

2009-07-02 Thread Curt Raymond
Got the carb on my Tecumseh today, took me about 5 tries to get it on with all
the linkages on and the fuel line hooked up right.
Gas poured out when I first fueled up, I hadn't gotten the nut on the bowl
tight enough, its hard to tell. Tecumseh gives a torque spec but I don't have
an inch pounds torque wrench. I did the old torque it 'till it stops leaking
trick.

Now it'll start but won't idle. I can fiddle with the choke and throttle and
keep it going but it spits and pops. After spending some time with the manual I
think I've got an idle fuel passage thats plugged (imagine that!) but the
bastard has a restriction rod in it that doesn't come out and its absolutely

Go down to FLAPS and buy a can of carb cleaner. I soaked the 60

paint underneath. A word to the wise, after you are done, store the
carb cleaner in a glass jar or antifreeze jug. It eats through the tin can.

But I agree, small engines are a pain. something like a chinee

The wiper arms are held on by a nut that is underneath the cover. You have to
leave the blade/arm against the lamp and pry the cover up (towards the hinge
and arm) to uncover the nut that holds the arm on the shaft.

The blade just snaps into the arm.

Re: [MBZ] anyone know anything about 600 limo (w100) parts value?

2009-07-02 Thread LWB250

I've dealt with these guys with two former MBs, and Todd's quote is spot on:

I know what the M-100 secret handshake is: The rare and elusive US $1,000
bill. This is just like the secret Masonic handshake. You come up to someone
that you suspect may have an M100, and extend your right hand with a $1,000
bill cupped in your hand and smoothly pass it on. If the person looks down, and
says WOW, I've never SEEN so much money in my LIFE, you immediately grab it
back and continue on. If they say Huh, this is what I spent on my turn signal
repair, you embrace them warmly. - Todd Knutson

I kid you not, the prices for the parts on these things are nothing short of
obscene, and if you've got NOS stuff, you're sitting on a gold mine. Hold out
for every penny, 'cause eventually they'll cave, as this stuff cannot be had
unless they go to the factory and pay out the bottom, if it's even available.
And rest assured, these people have the money - it's just difficult separating
it from them, and they prey on those who don't understand the value of these
parts. I would opine that the person who offered you $600 for the pair already
had a buyer at a (much) higher price.

I'll reserve my opinion somewhat, suffice to say that the few dealings I've had
with M100 people were not pleasant.

Re: [MBZ] OT: I hate small engines

2009-07-02 Thread Curt Raymond
Oh man, about a 6hp diesel with a nice heavy flywheel would be awesome...

A carb soak is just what the doctor ordered. My friend that owns the snowmobile
shop used to have one, I need to head over and see if he's still got it.
Otherwise I'll take a can of carb cleaner and a small container and dip just
the tube, it sticks down from the carb a quarter inch or so.

The $400 Honda looms!

Go down to FLAPS and buy a can of carb cleaner.  I soaked the 60
years of crud off the International H carb, and found OE factory
paint underneath.  A word to the wise,  after you are done, store the
carb cleaner in a glass jar or antifreeze jug.  It eats through the tin can.

But I agree, small engines are a pain.  something like a chinee
Diesel would be a better choice, or a Putter diesel, if  you can find
one.  But those are all horiz. shaft as far as I know.
