Re: [MBZ] 124 windshield washer

2009-07-19 Thread Jim Cathey

The washer on my 300D has never worked. Bottle was pretty much holy.

That threw me. Holey?

I looked around and tried to figure out how to take the squirters off
the hood, but no luck there. Nothing in the 124 CD.

They press out from behind. I used a piece of tight-fitting
copper water pipe to push out the last set. The heaters unplug
from them, then you can see the mounting ears. You should be able
to blow compressed air through them from reverse. If you get them
out you can put vinegar down in them to dissolve whatever schmutz
is in there. Watch out when removing the squirters that you don't
chip the paint at the holes.

Take the hose off of both nozzle sets, then go to the do-it-yourself
car wash. Blast soapy water down the jets backwards -- they are
clogged with crud stuck in the rear of the nozzle, and poking
something down there will just push it off the nozzle until it pops
back up.

Also, check to make sure you have the correct wire to the correct
pump -- you also have headlight washers, and if the wires are
swapped, you are spraying your headlights instead. Try running the
washers with the headlights on -- you may get spray, and if you do,
swap the wires on the two pumps.

Yeah, well - I read Rodale 35 years ago regarding butter and
margarine. I haven't bought margarine since. Now, wax on and tell us
all about no science.

As to the shit down and shut up - yep.
Just think of the poor gov't - all we wanna do is think we know
something and complain and make their job hard to accomplish. I say -
just let them do what they do and agree - they are gonna do it anyway
and this makes it easier for them and less stressful for us. They
know more than me, so I just gotta trust them and let them do what da

Re: [MBZ] We're all gonna dieeeeeeee.....

2009-07-19 Thread Gary Hurst
i get more and more convinced everyday that EVERYTHING is just political.
All decisions are made in this simple algorithm:

A causes B
B is bad
A is bad
C is a replacement for B
C is good

This logic is horrible on many, many levels. mostly it is no logic at all,
but that isn't my subject here. there are two things no one ever cares to
talk about:

externalities
co-dependencies (i probably have the word wrong for this)

an externality is something that is created and put upon you as a side
effect of something else. like in my subdivision now the old biddies are
trying to kill off the snakes. these snakes have never hurt anyone as far
as anyone knows, but they are big and snakelike. the old biddies are
frightened from them. what do you think is going to happen to the rat
population if they succeed? get rid of DDT, hundreds of millions will die
from malaria. get rid of R12, send global warming through the roof. every
answer that is about prohobition of any sort works on the bad logic above.
and if you try to point this out to anyone making the argument, they will
shout you down.

what is called scientific research is nothing but regression analysis.
econometrics. it works under a limited set of circumstance, but it mostly
doesn't work. it's basically about drawing a graph. like, say you want to
know the relationship between fat intake and heart disease. to simplify
this model, say the only fat anyone in the usa eats is butter. so you see
how many sticks of butter a lot of people eat and whether they get heart
attacks. you discover that dudes who eat 10 sticks of butter a day are
dropping dead left and right from heart attacks. you also discover that
dudes who are eating 1 stick of butter a year seem to never get heart
attacks. so you make a graph and shows you how heart attacks and butter
correlate. and you call it "science". and anyone who disagrees gets
shouted down. and you start giving everyone margarine instead and every
doctor and government organization and school and whomever tells you to eat
margarine to save your heart. after all, it is science.

amazingly, everyone starts to live the scientific wisdom of the food
pyramid, only they are now dropping dead faster and from more things than
ever before. so now those with a vested interest in selling that margarine
need to make ptolemaic adjustments to preserve the gospel "truth proven by
science." only thing is that this isn't any science, but bullshit and the
gospels are all just so much politics. in the end it's just an orwellian
world and the government tells you who oceania has always been at war with
and you need to sit down and shut up or someone will hurt you. and all
discussion of politics, education, medicine, economics, society, race, et a
all just becomes pontificated bullshit and shit down and shut up. only the
ramifications get more and more serious every day as the sit down and shut
up technology increases, so much so that the 20th century can be viewed
really as just one wholesale bloodbath over bullshit.

and if anyone of you are interested, i'll explain why the correlation
between teh hearts attacks and the sticks of butter are no science at all.

Rick wrote: "My girlfriend has a '96 Buick Skylark and the Passlock anti theft

for these?"

When you say the passlock is failing, do you mean, the security light is coming
on and sometimes it won't start? if so, the first thing (and cheapest and
easiest thing to do) is to go to the dealer and get a new key. Sometimes it is
the little chip in the key. BUT, most of the time, it is the problem is
related to the small wires running through the column that feed into the back
of the ignition switch. As the wheel turns and the tilt wheel gets used, the
wires tend to fray. USUALLY, this is the problem. and you have to replace the
whole ignition switch lock tumblers and all.

let me know if that is the problem you are having, I may be able to give you a
better diagnostic procedure.

Take a bread tie wire and bend it over a quarter to get that radius,

Re: [MBZ] 124 windshield washer

2009-07-19 Thread Loren Faeth
You sure? We are talking 124. What about the heaters? is there a
plug that comes off the squirter, or do you take out a pigtail with
the squirter? The hole in the hood appears to be slotted, with the
front being smaller I didn't see any king of "legs" to clip it
in. I could slide the squirter front to back some, but nothing came
loose. I figured out how to get off the V connecter between the
squirter and the hose.

There is no wax in the nozzles. I can stick a pin 1/2" into each of
the 4 nozzles. there does not appear to be any obstruction there.

They have two "legs" that stick out, one forward and one back. If
you have a pair of long needle nose pliers, remove the hose from
each carefully, then use the pliers to compress the "legs". If you
get one loose (above the hood) the other one is easy to free
up. You can also use a flat blade screwdriver and do one side at a time, too.

Use a fine needle to clear them out along with some air
pressure. I'll bet they're clogged with wax.

Replacements are cheap - I always kept a couple around just in case.

Just a guess, but if you are satisfied there is no leak along the
stem, then I'd guess a head gasket next for doing flaky things, like
leaking less when the ambient temp is warmer. Could be a crack in

This is a bit dated now, but in college I had one of the only
personal computers in the dorm. It was something of a shared
resource/toy, and one day I flanged up a 'face' program that
mimicked the usual ROM-BASIC interface, except that it just
acted weird. It'd let you type in a program (or so you thought,
but when you typed RUN I forget what it did exactly, but it wasn't
what you thought. When you typed LIST to see what was going on,
it would change the on-screen text to LSIT and then report SYNTAX
ERROR, just like you would get if that's what you'd typed into it
normally. Most of the basic commands were intercepted to do
something a bit odd.

Eventually the victim would figure out that there must have been
a program running and type ^C to break it. The face program had
trapped that, but printed out the same message it would as if it
had broken, and then would go into a _different_ set of antics.
When you LIST-ed it would list something, but not your program and
certainly not itself. Something insulting like a dice-roller or
the like. The only way out was to reset or power-cycle it.

I was particularly proud of LSIT. The fun was seeing how many
times they'd type it before pecking it out one character at a
time and looking at it before hitting RETURN to ensure they
hadn't fat-fingered it. As many as ten, as I recall.

Endless hours of entertainment! Ahhh, college

I can attest to the cleansing power of pure biodiesel. Back when I had a 1990

main filter. I never had so much that it stopped up the fuel filter, but it
was noticeable when I removed the filters. But, the Bio-D did its job. The
funny thing was it cleaned everything out on the first tank and I never noticed

[MBZ] 560 SEL HVAC

2009-07-19 Thread Jim Cathey

My wife's been complaining of wacky AC vent behavior,
often going to defrost, and/or losing center vent
output. Since I was fooling with the radio I pulled
the PB array and had a look at its solder joints.
I touched up the switches themselves but didn't see
anything there. (I didn't really expect to, but I
was in the area.) I then ran my checklist and found
that three of the seven switchover valves had high
impedance. I poked around at its body, and found
that one of them 'came back', and then went away
again. Huh. The U-Pull had a 300 SEL listed so I
went there and found it nicely exposed already, so
it was easy to pull out. I'd brought my meter and
found that it also had several open valve coils,
largely the same ones IIRC. I bought it anyway, it
was cheap enough. (I got its cable plug too.)

Now, a new one is fairly expensive so since there is
some room in there I figured I could just use both of
them together to get seven good valves. (We'll see
how that works out today. Takes a Y connector for
the vacuum source and some splicing into the cable.)

The question: Is this a common failure? I've not
noticed that individual valves in the older cars have
had much of a problem, but this integrated valve block
perhaps is not so reliable? (Made by Eaton.) These
two cars were both 1990's, for what it's worth.

Re: [MBZ] Spork plugs (380 SL)

2009-07-19 Thread Jim Cathey

This thing on? Been awful quiet lately.

So I've noticed something of a correlation in that my
oil-fouling #7 plug problem gets _much_ better in hot
weather. Given that I think I've eliminated a stem
seal problem as a possibility, would this be indicative
of a head gasket or a ring problem?
