I wish we could buy these economical3 series diesel models in the US:

4.5 l/100km corresponds to about 52 mpg.

At the end of last year, I rented a BMW 318d while working in Europe.
I consistently got 5.0 to 5.2 l/100km with that car. And it was NICE to

I think they use pictures taken by the lunar orbiter in the mid 60's, so it
may not have any of the stuff left behind by the Apollo missions, which
according to some did not actually occur, or should I say they went into
Earth orbit for a few days and then came down again. Probably just as easy
to go to the moon, jump around and come home, than try and keep a big
secret, involving thousands of people. Like the say, the hard thing about
space travel is lift off and re-entry, the stuff in between is relatively
easy.

It does have an LT1 engine. Unfortunately, when the LT1 was installed in the B

factory rated at 300 hp and 330 lb*ft . The 96 Corvette was rated at 300 hp and
340 lb*ft. The 93-95 F-body Camaro/Firebird were rated at 275 horsepower and
325 lb*ft. BUT, the the 96-97 cars were rated at 285 horsepower and 335 lb*ft.
Then the 96-97 WS6 and SS Camaro/Firebird were rated at 305 hp.

Unfortunately for the B/D (the various big wagons and the Cadillac Fleetwood
were only rated at 260 horsepower and 330 lb*ft. SO, if you really want the
screaming power of the LT1, you will have to find a Corvette or F-Body LT1 that
was not factory detuned OR you figure out how to undue the detuning.

Re: [MBZ] hp

2009-07-22 Thread Peter Frederick
The change was in the early 70's, and GM grossly over-estimated hp
before that. Ford and Chrysler weren't much better, but GM was the
worst (no alternator, no oil pump, no water pump, etc).

Actually, 300 hp from 327 ci isn't all that good anyway -- my 72 280
SE gets 232 hp from 276 ci, after all, and the 3.5L M117 got the same
hp from 215 ci. And that's as installed, with all accessories
including tranny.

Not to say the 327 was a slug by any means, but not record output per
cubic inch!

[MBZ] Door Won't Close

2009-07-22 Thread Bob Rentfro
The latching hook on my drivers door ('77 300D) has seemingly frozen in the
closed position with the door open. The door locking mech still feels like
it's working by pulling up/pushing down on the latch.

What's wrong? I can't close my door.

Lube it up, and it'll un-stick and start working right again.

Re: [MBZ] Door Won't Close

2009-07-22 Thread Peter Frederick
The door latch has been triggered with the door open. The latch sort
of rotates over and will not pop back up by itself when you operate
the release (either inside or outside).

To fix it, hold the release open and use a large screwdriver to flip
the latch lever open (it closes over a round bar, and opens when you
pull on the door). May be a bit stiff, in which case it needs shot
of white lithium grease into the mechanism (but NOT the pin that goes
into the tapered socked on the body, it will stick terribly!).

What happened was that the door was pulled almost closed and then
pushed open without using the release, allowing the latch to close.
This happens most often when the mechanism is binding from lack of
lubrication, otherwise it would have latched.

Poor lubrication will also cause the door to bounce rather than
latch, too.

Yabbut - it was a memorable ride - i.e. no airbags, no ars, atb, att, etc.
I was given a ride in a classic vette onetime - engine on rails, that
was all that beast was. No real creature comforts - built to move
fast. Kids these days...

1972 I believe. A few engines were actually under-rated, during the sixties.
The Camaro 302 in the early Z-28 was rated at 290 hp. The L-88 427 was rated
at 435 hp. Both engines produced more than their rated power.

Re: [MBZ] hp

I learned to drive in the parental units' 66 Pontiac Bonneville, 389
4bbl. Stomping the pedal on that thing would push you into the back
seat and lay a coupla strips of rubber as far as you wanted. Of course
it wallowed like a pig, had no steering to speak of, was big and heavy,
but did it sound good and make you feel good. The 64 Pontiac I got to
drive mostly was very similar, also a 389, but not quite as beastly.

Fellow I worked with a couple decades ago just got disbarred. Seems
he was upstanding while a cop and going to law school, but in the
intervening time he sort of went astray.

Clients were major drug lords in the area. He took payment in cash.
first mistake. Second was to put it in his home safe. Third was to
forget to put it on the books as income. Went downhill fast after that.
