Re: [MBZ] Adjusting the W123 injection pump dampener screw
I adjust mine with the engine running. The rack dampener is just a bandaid fix, uneven idle is a sign that it is time to have the IP on the bench. Of course that costs money and anyone can adjust a rack dampener :D -Rolf harry watkins wrote: From Mac, Aug, 2008 The rack damper bolt is only part of the equation with respect to getting the idle 'right', or as right as it can be. First, the adjustment has to be done with the engine as hot as you can get it, so if you are able to work in a place near a stretch of highway all the better (mine have always run roughest right after a highway drive). This means you have about 10 minutes in which to work, before the engine cools off too much at idle. Second, as these engines age (by which I mean at higher mileages) they seem to each have their own 'sweet spot'. Some run very well at low idle RPMs. Three out of the four I have had did not. You have to adjust the idle speed as well as the rack damper - you may not be able to get a smooth idle at your current idle speed point. The third point is the injectors, but you have seen to that (I can't find your original post now, but I am assuming you had them professionally cleaned). Re: [MBZ] polishing
I'll be putting the finishing touches on my C300 tonight for tomorrow's Seattle Section MBCA Car Show. I've already clayed it followed by polishing with a Menzerna polish for nano-particle clears. Then a Speed Shine cleanup (my favorite detailing spray from Griot's). After that I applied Menzerna paint sealant followed by Griot's liquid Concours wax. I do this about every six months with Speed Shine and spray wax in between when I think it needs it. *writes that down* Wow. Rain is in the forecast. I prefer (and this is just my opinion and preference) to do a more frequent wax job that is less labor intensive. Specifically, I either apply the wax by hand or use an orbital buffer. Now, one thing that I am confused about on the terms is I use a low speed orbital buffer - the kind you can buy anywhere for $30. I am not skilled enough to use a high speed buffer (what I think of as the tool a body shop uses to buff a car). I have seen people not know how to use those and you can burn through paint if you are not careful. Also, if you are using a HIGH speed buffer, you should really be using a paint thickness gauge to make sure you have enough paint. Those are not worries when you are just using the simple low speed orbital polisher. I tried some wax called Gold Class that I thinks works very well. I just tried a new wax and think it is the best for the average carowner. It is called Ice Wax and you can put it on by hand or with a low speed polisher and you can go right over the black rubber trim without it leaving a white haze. It just wipes off with the rest of the wax and thus makes it MUCH easier because you are not trying to worry about not getting anything on the trim. It comes off very easy and leaves the slickest finish on paint that I have found. NOW, I agree for paint in bad shape, you need to really cut into it to remove oxidation and then you need some significant polishing that probably only comes from a high speed orbital. But, if your paint is okay or even good, a low speed orbital using the ice wax makes for quick work and provides a great shine. Just my 2 cents, feel free to delete if you don't agree. Donald H. If it's R134a, it's the same stuff that's in those 'canned air' computer dusting sprays. I wouldn't feel bad about venting a few ounces of R134 through the schrader valve on the low side. If it's R12, I suppose you could hook up an empty can to your gauge set, vacuum it out, and then put the can in a bucket of ice and water and fill it from the low side of your gauge set. Freon should stop flowing into the can in the bucket when the low side pressure equals the pressure at which freon boils at 32-34 degrees F. Then close the valve on your can tapper and plan on using that can fairly soon or taking it to a shop that can recycle it. High low side pressure and low high side pressure (250 is a bit low for the current outside temps unless you are in International Falls or the mountains in Montana) make me think there is air in the system. Air does not condense, so it raises the low side pressure considerably (no significant expansion, not heat required) and hence prevents the proper expansion of the Freon. Re: [MBZ] buffers
...Now, one thing that I am confused about on the terms is I use a low speed orbital buffer - the kind you can buy anywhere for $30. I am not skilled enough to use a high speed buffer (what I think of as the tool a body shop uses to buff a car) The discussion has mentioned random orbital buffers, not ordinary direct drive buffers. A random orbital's buffing head is not driven by the motor but by the off-center motion of the driven head which uses a counterweight so that it doesn't jump out of your hands. My Porter-Cable's motor is variable speed. The experts maintain that you can't burn the paint with a random-orbital but you certainly can with a direct drive unless you make a living using one. And, random orbitals cost far more that $30. I paid about $160 for mine which included a case and a bunch of attachments. At the MBCA car show today, a crew fom Griot's brought some of their products which they demonstrated on two cars. The first was a very dirty and neglected black SEC and they clayed, polished and waxed one side of the hood to a bright shine (except for the rust pits) making the rest of the car look even worse. I hate to see a potentially nice car owned by the wrong person who is too lazy to keep it looking good. RLE ** A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. See yours in just 2 easy steps! Re: [MBZ] Best wax?
Will probably get the good detail guy to wax it since it's being driven daily and I can't do much outside at this time of year. I'll buy the 3M Show Car Wax for him to use. Wife would get it detailed about twice per year AFAIK. Not sure if it got waxed that often but I suspect she did the way it shined. Since the car is inside or under a roof all the time except for trips to town, and since Florida doesn't really have any seasons as you know, twice per year would probably be enough to protect it and keep it looking good and as much as I could handle anyway. Thanks again for the good info, Dan, and thanks to Donald and the other guys for their info too. Gerry --- You should definitely wax 4 times a year, just like the seasons some of us have. My dissertation was for an annual detailing job if you're up to it, or what I would do when I first purchased a car. Don't think I did that *every* time I waxed the car! There's not enough time in the day for it And as Donald says, a random orbit polisher/buffer will really make quick work of a wax job. Money well spent, IMHO. Dan From: Donald Snook dsn...@mtsqh.com Larry T wrote: Ditto the 3M Show Car Wax - after I painted my 911, I used the 3M wax and was blown away by it. It seems to put a hard shell on the car -- and it lasts a very long time. Very thin coats work best but if the detailer is doing it I'm sure he will know what works. Also, it can be put on with hand or machine - but IMO using a machine is much better. I have tried the 3M wax and I agree it works well. I don't agree that a car should only be waxed once a year. I wax my cars 3-4 times a year and I think OK Don can attest how nice the paint was on my former 1990 300D 2.5. If you are going to wax only once a year, then Dan's very impressive and comprehensive detail workup probably is the best thing. Donald H. Re: [MBZ] 220D Head Removal - Epilogue
Finally got the head off. Had to remove water pump, etc. and fabricated a puller for the timing chain rail pin using a hose clamp and a bolt. The pin came out nicely and I removed the rail and lifted off the head. Everything looked fine...except that 3 pistons were at TDC! #2 piston was stationary. Oh well. I was looking forward to puttering around in the little 220 but I guess a motor swap with the banged up 240D is in the works. Cheers, Bruce -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
