Whilst they may wash out on site they usually don't tip out the waste
due to environmental regulations and as such have a bit of concrete and
water sloshing in the bowl, if they don't agitate this, the solid stuff
will settle on the bottom and makes it hard to get out.

Re: [MBZ] Adjusting the W123 injection pump dampener screw

2009-08-09 Thread Rolf Martin-Hoster

I adjust mine with the engine running.

The rack dampener is just a bandaid fix, uneven idle is a sign that it
is time to have the IP on the bench. Of course that costs money and
anyone can adjust a rack dampener :D

-Rolf

harry watkins wrote:

From Mac, Aug, 2008

The rack damper bolt is only part of the equation with respect to getting
the idle 'right', or as right as it can be.

First, the adjustment has to be done with the engine as hot as you can
get
it, so if you are able to work in a place near a stretch of highway
all the

better (mine have always run roughest right after a highway drive). This
means you have about 10 minutes in which to work, before the engine cools
off too much at idle.

Second, as these engines age (by which I mean at higher mileages) they
seem

to each have their own 'sweet spot'. Some run very well at low idle RPMs.
Three out of the four I have had did not. You have to adjust the idle
speed

as well as the rack damper - you may not be able to get a smooth idle at
your current idle speed point.

The third point is the injectors, but you have seen to that (I can't find
your original post now, but I am assuming you had them professionally
cleaned).

Good luck

Mac

2009-08-09 Thread Rolf Martin-Hoster

I'll be putting the finishing touches on my C300 tonight for tomorrow's
Seattle Section MBCA Car Show. I've already clayed it followed by polishing
with a Menzerna polish for nano-particle clears. Then a Speed Shine cleanup
(my favorite detailing spray from Griot's). After that I applied Menzerna
paint sealant followed by Griot's liquid Concours wax. I do this about every
six months with Speed Shine and spray wax in between when I think it needs
it.

Curt, These shippers are folks that stay on the move and follow these
internet sites like UShip.com. If they see something going their way, so to
speak, they bid low and save deadheading. The guy bringing my backhoe lives
about 80 south of me and right now is delivering north of the pick up
location.

BTW, they have ratings almost like Ebay with more details. This guy has 83
positives, which includes delivering a small dog.

'May be much worse and different. I have much trouble walking barefooted;
'possible same problem in soft sole moccasins. 'Big danger is catching a
toe on the floor/ground and tripping or turning toe under and stepping on it
with full weight like I did in my bedroom 'bout four years ago. I was just
out of the shower and nude, crossing my bedroom to my chest of drawers to
fetch underwear, caught left big toe on carpet, turned it under and stepped
upon it with my full weight on it; tore toenail off from the top - not the
outer edge - ripped it off from the meat/flesh at the top. I was here by
myself, bleeding and nude. 'Got a clean hanky out of the chest of drawers
and tied it around the toe to slow the bleeding. 'Called my former
daughter-in-law (podiatrist) to come doctor the toe, then realized all the
entry doors to the house were locked and couldn't get to one to let her in.
'Called son, who has a key, to let her in; by the time they got here, I had
dressed partially and was waiting on the bed with the left foot sticking out
the side ready for some repair. I was lucky to catch both of them at home
and immediately available.

Conclusion: most dangerous time/place for me is with bare feet in the
bedroom. I have to walk very slowly and deliberately and concentrate on
each step to clear the floor/ground when that rear foot comes forward,
especially when barefooted.

I had one of my employees laptop go down today, so I went by staples and
bought one of these Acer netbooks as they call it, for $299. It only
weights about 2 lbs and its got a 160gb hard drive and 1 gig of ram. WOW, I
cant believe how nice these little computers are. This is going to be
great hauling around on a car lot all day.

[MBZ] Tranny shifting problem!!

2009-08-09 Thread John P. English
Need a little info regarding a problem with the transmission in my 1985 300SD.
Changed to the Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic ATF about a year or so ago.
Everything running smoothly up until last week. All of a sudden, the
transmission won't shift into its highest gear without my taking my foot off of
the
accelerator. In other words, I get up to about 50-55 mph running at 3500 rpm,
at which point the last shift is suppose to occur and drop the rpm's back to
about 2500 running at 60 mph. This just won't happen unless I disengage the
accelerator. Question: Does anyone know the cause and cure for such
a problem???

[MBZ] OT Air - Overcharged

2009-08-09 Thread Peter Hertzing
Hello All

I just purchased a new Limo, and the air sucks. I put my gauges on it and
they are way high. The low side pushes 55, the high side is around 250.
The cooling fan works fine. I am almost positive that someone has
overcharged the system. Is thier any way to discharge a small amount of
freon without a vacuum pump? Into an empty can or something? Thanks for
the help and suggestions in advance.

Re: [MBZ] Best wax?

Larry T wrote: Ditto the 3M Show Car Wax - after I painted my 911, I used the

lasts a very long time. Very thin coats work best but if the detailer is
doing it I'm sure he will know what works. Also, it can be put on with hand or
machine - but IMO using a machine is
much better.

I have tried the 3M wax and I agree it works well. I don't agree that a car
should only be waxed once a year. I wax my cars 3-4 times a year and I think
OK Don can attest how nice the paint was on my former 1990 300D 2.5. If you
are going to wax only once a year, then Dan's very impressive and comprehensive
detail workup probably is the best thing. I prefer (and this is just my
opinion and preference) to do a more frequent wax job that is less labor
intensive. Specifically, I either apply the wax by hand or use an orbital
buffer. Now, one thing that I am confused about on the terms is I use a low
speed orbital buffer - the kind you can buy anywhere for $30. I am not
skilled enough to use a high speed buffer (what I think of as the tool a body
shop uses to buff a car). I have seen people not know how to use those and
you can burn through paint if you are not careful. Also, if you are using a
HIGH speed buffer, you should really be using a paint thickness gauge to make
sure you have enough paint. Those are not worries when you are just using the
simple low speed orbital polisher. I tried some wax called Gold Class that
I thinks works very well. I just tried a new wax and think it is the best for
the average carowner. It is called Ice Wax and you can put it on by hand or
with a low speed polisher and you can go right over the black rubber trim
without it leaving a white haze. It just wipes off with the rest of the wax and
thus makes it MUCH easier because you are not trying to worry about not getting
anything on the trim. It comes off very easy and leaves the slickest finish on
paint that I have found. NOW, I agree for paint in bad shape, you need to
really cut into it to remove oxidation and then you need some significant
polishing that probably only comes from a high speed orbital. But, if your
paint is okay or even good, a low speed orbital using the ice wax makes for
quick work and provides a great shine.

Just my 2 cents, feel free to delete if you don't agree.

If it's R134a, it's the same stuff that's in those 'canned air' computer dusting
sprays. I wouldn't feel bad about venting a few ounces of R134 through the
schrader valve on the low side. If it's R12, I suppose you could hook up an
empty can to your gauge set, vacuum it out, and then put the can in a bucket of
ice and water and fill it from the low side of your gauge set. Freon should stop
flowing into the can in the bucket when the low side pressure equals the
pressure at which freon boils at 32-34 degrees F. Then close the valve on your
can tapper and plan on using that can fairly soon or taking it to a shop that
can recycle it.

Re: [MBZ] Best wax?

2009-08-09 Thread LWB250

You should definitely wax 4 times a year, just like the seasons some of us
have. My dissertation was for an annual detailing job if you're up to it, or
what I would do when I first purchased a car.

Don't think I did that *every* time I waxed the car! There's not enough time
in the day for it

And as Donald says, a random orbit polisher/buffer will really make quick work
of a wax job. Money well spent, IMHO.

you need to really cut into it to remove oxidation and then
you need some significant polishing that probably only comes
from a high speed orbital. But, if your paint is okay or

quick work and provides a great shine.

High low side pressure and low high side pressure (250 is a bit low
for the current outside temps unless you are in International Falls
or the mountains in Montana) make me think there is air in the system.

Air does not condense, so it raises the low side pressure
considerably (no significant expansion, not heat required) and hence
prevents the proper expansion of the Freon. If the system was
charged by pressure, it will be somewhat low on capacity due to the air.

You should also check the adjustment of the kickdown cable from the
accelerator linkage to the tranny. If the plastic screw fitting has
broken, the cable may not be operating correctly. Also verify the
condition of the tranny shift modulator on the left fender (blue
plastic do-dad that looks like a horn). Broken vac/pressure lines
will result in very strange shifting behavior.

The discussion has mentioned random orbital buffers, not ordinary direct
drive buffers. A random orbital's buffing head is not driven by the motor but
by the off-center motion of the driven head which uses a counterweight so
that it doesn't jump out of your hands. My Porter-Cable's motor is variable
speed. The experts maintain that you can't burn the paint with a
random-orbital but you certainly can with a direct drive unless you make a
living using
one.

And, random orbitals cost far more that $30. I paid about $160 for mine
which included a case and a bunch of attachments.

At the MBCA car show today, a crew fom Griot's brought some of their
products which they demonstrated on two cars. The first was a very dirty and
neglected black SEC and they clayed, polished and waxed one side of the hood to
a
bright shine (except for the rust pits) making the rest of the car look
even worse. I hate to see a potentially nice car owned by the wrong person who
is too lazy to keep it looking good.

Will probably get the good detail guy to wax it since it's being driven
daily and I can't do much outside at this time of year. I'll buy the 3M
Show Car Wax for him to use. Wife would get it detailed about twice per
year AFAIK. Not sure if it got waxed that often but I suspect she did the
way it shined. Since the car is inside or under a roof all the time except
for trips to town, and since Florida doesn't really have any seasons as you
know, twice per year would probably be enough to protect it and keep it
looking good and as much as I could handle anyway.
Thanks again for the good info, Dan, and thanks to Donald and the other guys

Wife and I were sitting at a Quiznos (Carroll IA) having lunch this
afternoon.

Jeep CJ-7 pulled into the parking lot.

Suddenly started thinking about how cool it would be to stuff a 616 and
matching transmission into a Jeep.

I drove the 30 miles home cataloging all of the gotchas that would be
involved, but also thinking about what a nice and unique vehicle it would
be.

I wonder if anyone has pulled this off?

With 2WD, you'd only need a custom driveshaft, motor mounts, hydraulic clutch
pedal, some work on the instruments, etc...
With 4WD, you'd also need to find a way to hang a divorced transfer case behind
the mbz tranny.

How did Brian Roth do the Toyota Hi-Lux drivetrain on his 300TD?
Did he adapt the Toyota 5sp to the 617, or did he adapt a divorced transfer case

 harry watkins wrote:

 From Mac, Aug, 2008

The rack damper bolt is only part of the equation with respect to getting
the idle 'right', or as right as it can be.

First, the adjustment has to be done with the engine as hot as you can get
it, so if you are able to work in a place near a stretch of highway all
 the
better (mine have always run roughest right after a highway drive). This
means you have about 10 minutes in which to work, before the engine cools
 off too much at idle.

The third point is the injectors, but you have seen to that (I can't find
your original post now, but I am assuming you had them professionally
 cleaned).

 Good luck

 Mac

You should also check the adjustment of the kickdown cable from the
accelerator linkage to the tranny. If the plastic screw fitting has
broken, the cable may not be operating correctly. Also verify the
condition of the tranny shift modulator on the left fender (blue plastic

Re: [MBZ] 220D Head Removal - Epilogue

2009-08-09 Thread B Dike
Finally got the head off.  Had to remove water pump, etc. and fabricated a
puller for the timing chain rail pin using a hose clamp and a bolt.  The
pin came out nicely and I removed the rail and lifted off the head.

Everything looked fine...except that 3 pistons were at TDC!  #2 piston was
stationary.

Oh well.  I was looking forward to puttering around in the little 220 but I
guess a motor swap with the banged up 240D is in the works.

Cheers,

Bruce
