Why did you choose a dome versus one of the passive solar designs, or did
the energy equation not enter into the decision?

[MBZ] Ceramic brakes question

2009-10-26 Thread Curt Raymond
So I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with Akebono pads on my Ranger but its
brought up a question I can't answer.
Ceramic pads are supposed to wear like, well ceramic right? They're also
supposed to stop better, don't those two factors together mean they're going to
eat rotors?

Vacuum pump/injection pump timer are no longer working as the engineers
intended. Both cam on pump and wavy-face of IP timer are really chewed up.
Vacuum pump appears to be complete with no parts missing.

So, time to get a new pump and timer, and learn how to R/R the timer.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Dome

2009-10-26 Thread MG
No it wouldn't be by itself. What they do is not bring the
concrete all the way to the outside edge of the triangle when
they manufacture the triangles. They cut part of the foam off at
an angle which when two triangles butt together forms a trough.
the 1x1 inch welded mesh embedded in the concrete coat extends
past the edge of the triangle and therefor overlaps with that of
the neighboring triangle. This overlap is linked together with
hog nose rings and then the trough is filled with concrete up to
the level of the rest of the existing concrete. When everything
is done you end up with a geodesic framework of concrete ribs and
a stressed skin of concrete between the ribs. Look up
http://www.aidomes.com they have a lot of information on the
domes on line. It's not always the easiest site to navigate but
it is possible to find the stuff on all of this.

If I were to do it again I would probably go with nice wooden
beams bolted together with a wood plank cover on the outside.
Then cover the wood on the outside with 9" foam triangles and
finally cover that with concrete. I really do like wood beam
construction on the inside because of the looks but the concrete
with a polymer sealing is to me a more attractive look on the
outside. I guess I could always add the wood inside later.

The one I helped build had wooden triangles that were bolted
together and

then sprayed on the inside with foam. I'm not sure how the one you
describe would be put together, since 1" of concrete is not
self-supporting.

Hi Gang -
Once again, I need help identifying some parts I bought from Rusty,
etc.

2 sets of wheel bearings - pn's
211 405 645D
211 405 625

Just need to know if these are for a W123 240D or a W124 300D.

BTW, I tried to find these part No's on Startekinfo.com but didn't see
a pn search box.

Is there a place where I can look up these pn's?
Thx -
LarryT

Re: [MBZ] Febi Parts

2009-10-26 Thread Rusty Cullens
FebiBilstein is the name of a company that is owned by Ferdinand Bilstein.
It has nothing to do with Bilstein shocks. Febi has been is business for at
least 50 years and does indeed manufacture parts. They do repackage as well,
but make no mistake, they are manufacturers also. In 33 years, I have found
their products to be of very good quality.

When ordering my W124 Motor mounts I bought the ones priced "in the
middle". The least expensive were ~$35, (was told they are cheap Chinese
MMs) the next were $72 and the top were ~$82. The $72 were made by Febi -
a name totally unfamiliar to me. The box says Febi with Bilstein written
below the primary logo. It's reassuring to know these MMs are made by a
company I think of as a premier supplier of parts. But, IMO it would be
helpful for the website to list Webi/Bilstein as the manufacturer rather
than Febi alone.

Not sure which websites we'll use - Rusty's or Gary's, but if you guys
will take my suggestion I believe it will remove a lot of concern over
buying parts with unknown manufacturers names. But maybe it's just me -
perhaps everyone has heard of Febi and knows they are a Bilstein company?

Have a nice weekend -

which runs the gamut from chinesee cheesy to gloriously germanic. as
always, i'd like to be able to make an apples to apples comparison.

the best way to do this in my estimation is to find a genuine hose and an
oem/aftermarket hose that seem to be made by the same company (say, both
from CRP) and then compare those

Re: [MBZ] Dragged home my new '95 124 diesel yesterday

2009-10-26 Thread Curt Raymond
I got 2 hand me down cars from my parents who were smokers at the time. In both
cases I found that a vinegar/water solution works wonders for removing the
smoker smell. My '84 Ford Tempo was worse because it had cloth seats. With that
car I soaked the seats in the vinegar/water and sopped it out with a sponge. It
took 2 horrible days (I was in highschool and had the time) but after 3 days of
drying the car smelled okay. These days I'd do the same thing but suck it back
out with a wet/dry vac.

No brakes, car won't shut off with the key, doors don't lock, etc.
Barely runs at idle, we had to push it up on the trailer with him
goosing it to help out a bit.  Might have boogered fuel or filters or
something, it has been sitting awhile.  It was clicking up at the front
of the valve cover, not sure if that was timing chain or bad injector or
clog or what.

Very nice car, dark blue, good paint and body with a few little dings,
tan interior in fairly decent shape, good tires.  He can get it sorted
fairly easily I bet, will have an excellent car for cheap money.  He'll
need about a gallon of Febreze though.

Re: [MBZ] Diesel bargains on Portland CL, OM603s and more

The Red one looks like one that was for sale in the Oakland CA area for a
long time. I think the price was $1300. Never went to see it though.

Here in the biodiesel-crazy PNW, good W123s seem to be as coveted as
always, but for some reason the prices for all other diesels have
fallen through the floor:

http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/cto/1434719263.html - This guy has
been trying to sell this diesel Heckflosse for the past year or so,
slowly lowering the price (I think it started at $3500). I wonder if
it's a lot more rusty than he lets on?

http://portland.craigslist.org/wsc/cto/1434989367.html - 300SDL seems
like a steal with a new head, etc. - what's the catch?

http://portland.craigslist.org/clk/ctd/1434873494.html - Ready for a
Curt-style brush paint job or just an afternoon with a flat-black
rattlecan - I hear matte colors are the fashionable thing on Ferraris
and Lamborghinis.

http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/cto/1435917170.html - Well, here's
a cheap W123 after all. "Needs transmission" = just "massive vacuum
leak"???

http://portland.craigslist.org/clc/cto/1435725037.html - Kaleb-style
bargain, an '87 300D with a trashed interior. I have a spare 124
interior... hmm...

http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/cto/1435350134.html - Ponton that
"looks kind of like a London cabbie." The mind boggles.
