Re: [MBZ] Thermostat behaviour

2009-12-09 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310
Regardless, once you peg the temperature gauge, the odds are high that the
thermostat needs to be replaced, UNLESS you had an air pocket in the top of the
head. The late Dieseling Doctor used to say that the wax pellet in the t-stat
would deform to the point that it no longer worked correctly.

I like the idea of an air pocket in the system, especially if you recently
drained/filled the coolant. Need to have the nose of the car elevated, begin
fill at the upper radiator hose into the engine, keep heat setting on full heat
and patiently fill in as much coolant as possible. I like to burp the system
by squeezing the upper radiator hose until air no longer bubble up into the
expansion tank and I don't hear air gurgling around when I squeeze the hose.

A good sign that you have an air pocket is a gurgling sound under the dash upon
hard acceleration.

Thanks for the help everyone.  The coolant temp nearly pegged out, then after I
played around the HVAC buttons it dropped to normal and the heater started
blowing warm.

Re: [MBZ] ALTERNATOR LIGHT WOE

2009-12-09 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310
As described, the job was too easy. The VR seemed to be just fine. I
noticed that the bail was off, it holds the plug into the back of the
alternator, so I pulled the plug out and cleaned the contacts up with
some Radio Shack contact cleaner. Reinstalled plug and its bail,
checked voltage at the battery with engine running at idle (13.8 volts).
This a.m. there were no issues with the light coming on, so I may have
just had some dirty electrical contacts. Also checked the belt, tension
was fine. I did not have time to T/S any of the noises, which seem to
be mostly loose and rattling stuff, maybe this weekend I'll be able to
take a look.

Having done this job on both Diesel and vergasser versions of the 124, I
can verify that they are in the same relative position.
That being said, I've also learned that when the brushes have been too
short for awhile, the rings in the alternator are often black or burnt,
or both. A little fine sandpaper cleaned up mine so the alternator works
again.

Hope this isn't a trend or epidemic, but my '92 300D 2.5 wouldn't start
this morning - just figured out that the battery is dead. Don't know
whether the
2 1/2 year old (84 month) battery is toast, or if the alternator isn't
charging yet. This is the only alternaotr in my collection that doesn't
have a new VR/brush pack yet. As it will be 20F in the AM, I hope
charging the battery out of the son's parked 190D will cure the
situation.

changed in the last few years, but I'm wondering if low pressure caused

Does anyone have a gauge set for measuring fuel system pressure in a

Yeah, there can definitely be coolant in there you can't see, but I'm

Thanks for the help everyone. The coolant temp nearly pegged out,
then after I played around the HVAC buttons it dropped to normal and
the heater started blowing warm.

2009-12-09 Thread R A Bennell
OK, that part I do understand. Seems a lot of effort to swap an engine though
before finding out what the damage is
on the one in there.

However, I do understand. I have a boat in that situation. Loud knock from the
lower end and I am guessing it will
need the crank and the whole works so I just bought a small block Chevy short
block assembly used that should swap
in quickly. Will see what the damage is in due course but likely going to be
bad. Boat is a bit easier to swap
however as once the doghouse is removed, it is pretty much wide open.

I could leave the car sit all winter and deal with it in the spring but I've

The engine could just need a couple valves sure but it could also have a

Talked to my Indy today, asked him how he felt about an engine swap vs tearing
down the engine in the car which had
broken its timing chain.
He said he really preferred the swap and figured it'd be cheaper too.

I agree, so now I need to see about an engine...

So, the labor unions committed career suicide?
Reminds me of the union shop I worked in the summer I was 18.

The guys I worked with complained that they were inefficiently putting out crap,
but didn't seem inclined to actually work harder, and I got leaned on a bit
because I was putting out good parts too quickly until I slowed down. It was
almost as bad as the Brit factory stories of the 1970's, the only thing missing
was deliberate sabotage. (I guess it was more like the Soviet Union than
England, nobody cared to do any more than they absolutely had to)

Soon after, the company (Johnson Controls by then) told the union how far wages
would have to go down to get the bottom line out of the red, and refused to
negotiate any more than that for the new labor contract.
The union went on strike, and Johnson closed the factory, because they were
unwilling to run a factory with negative profit and the union was unwilling to
do anything that would result in actual profit. I drove past it this afternoon,
still empty. I think the 25th anniversary of the plant closing was this year.

After all my playing in the snow today...

Kid across the street parked his RX-7 on his parent's lawn (said kid is
probably 25 and has a kid of his own) because of the snow (where he
normally parks is where the snow goes).
Now at 9:10pm he's decided he wants to go somewhere but his
high-performance (or cheap copies of same) tires have NO traction on the
1 of snow and wet grass he's parked on and while the lawn is basically
flat he's totally stuck...

Well actually he's stuck because he can't work the throttle less than
halfway so he's putting too much power to the wheels and they spin. Now
that I think of it with the big tomato can exhaust he's probably go no
back pressure and thus no low-end power... Anyway its pretty entertaining
to watch. So far he's twice gotten out and half-assed kicked snow away
from the tires. Other than that he's just making noise and ruining the
grass.

Ahh its wonderful to be reminded that I actually have some sense. From
where I sit I can SEE the boards he could put under the tires for
traction...

If nothing else driving 110 miles a day gives me time to think about things...

When we rented the tow dolly the kid wouldn't rent it to me because Uhaul

quickly tried to convince the kid we'd take the dolly and put it on an F150. He

I was actually towing an MG B. That (surprisingly) flew just fine.

Dwight complimented my quick thinking but actually I'd anticipated the problem.

The reason why you see it everywhere you go lately is because the state of
Georgia just started getting the stuff about 6 months ago, so it's probably
all the rave down there. I know this because a college buddy of mine now

Kinda like how NC never had Sweetwater 420 until I tasted some at the

[MBZ] Yuengling

2009-12-09 Thread tom tomscat

Hi Gary,

I have known Yuengling as a Philly beer, and the oldest brewery in America.

http://www.yuengling.com/distrib.htm

Looks like they are still Mid-Atlantic/ East Coast regional beer.

I did find this note in their history:

1999 Yuengling purchases former Stroh brewery in Tampa, Florida. Florida market
begins selling America's Oldest beer.
I don't know if that explains what you see, but is that in your general
neighborhood?

when i was a kid, yuengling was a strong regional beer. if you happened to
be in certain areas, the beer at any bar was yuengling just as in certain
areas the beer was genesee. there were sure signs you were out of the
city and someplace completely else.

lately, everywhere i go i see yuengling, like it has exploded in
distribution. it kinda tastes like what i would expect, so it isn't just
relabeled bud light. anyone know what's going on here?

Except it has the cells locked with a password.

And OpenOffice3 has some new options for locking each sheet -
with the result that if the document was locked under earlier
versions none of the cells are selectable!!

Making it real pain to use. Right click on a cell, then cancel
the contextual menu in order to select a cell.

Oh well...
