BTDT, I have the scars, 8 stents and 2 'Grand Openings'.

What is to be learned is that you do have cardiac disease, it is
treatable, it will comeback. Your mission is to take note and not deny

Bad things happen to good folks, one partner about 40 years old in my

group. For the last 10 years, the thrust by my Doc {Senior Partner} has
been to keep folks in a quality lifestyle consistent with their needs,

What will kill you for sure is ignoring the basic signs that are

I'll check it out, I know the light works in the on position but not

Other symptoms too, such as does the key-in or lights-on buzzer
work when the door is opened; does the seat adjustment work with
the door open and the key off?

You can open the warning module and repair the diode, if that's
the problem, or you can just replace the warning module. Depends
on how cheap you are, and whether or not you can solder and such.
(I: cheap as anything and a solderin' fool. Sometimes I regret it.)

The black tube is not connected to anything under the dash, so maybe it's
the atmospheric vent. Green tube will not sustain any vacuum. Found some
printouts from Marshalls time which state that I'll probably have to pull
the dash and replace a vacuum unit of which there are five. I'll replace
all five since pulling the dash was not much fun the first time I did it.

Can the climate control vacuum units be checked without removing the

Zero recollection. So I walk out to the car and
look. Odometer shows 229,xxx miles - but if I remember
correctly, I repaired the odometer on that car, so at least a
few more.

I don't think the engine was ever replaced.

The oil mostly leaked out above the headlight and for a few
inches along the hood/fender gap. The amount of topoff oil I
had to add never felt like more than proper - up till just
before I first notice the miss.

The engine ran and started okay, but cylinder 3 wasn't
doing it's fair share of the work. From when I first
determined indeed it has a miss to why is the oil pressure
gauge not at the top peg? was probably about 1000 miles.

I did make partner. They will not put my name on the door. The last named
partner has been with the firm for 52 years. None of the partners that followed
him have been named. In fact, once he dies, we will drop off the last three
names and just be McDonald, Tinker. It is too hard to say all five names, much
the other 11 partners. McDonald has been dead for 50 years and Tinker has been
dead for 10 years. The original name of the firm (founded in 1905) was Amidon
and Dale, but obviously they have been dead for decades.

As for the Expedition, yes, my wife has no desire to get rid of it. But, it
does have 145,000 miles. So, eventually, something major is going to go wrong
with it and she might part with it then.

[MBZ] Diesel availability WAS: 1989 300TDT with 4 Matic

2010-01-27 Thread Dieselhead
THere was a lot of press in 2006 regarding Diesels. Honda was going
to offer the ultimate Diesel. In their brilliance, they decided the
LA market was most likely to buy Diesels. It never occurred to the
New York marketing geniuses that people in the middle of the country
who drive long distances (and buy Diesel pickups) might be interested
in their piece of work. So the test market was declared a failure
ala GM 1984.

Daimler chrysler also announced Bluetec diesel engines would be
available in many models in the 2007 model year. These included
Cheeps, and a lot of Dodge models. With the shareholder revolt, that
never happened. I am not sure if any chrysler models were slated for
Diesels or not.

i am confused by that. didn't honda promise us some great diesel for the

You don't need to pull the dash, necessarily. IIRC you can

Then, at least, you'd know more about what's really leaking.

[MBZ] worst of its over

2010-01-27 Thread tom tomscat

Hi Curt,

Welcome back, glad to see you back in circulation, no pun intended. The lesson
here is if you feel a pain or something unusual... get it checked out.

I just went thru a similar thing at the end of December... had a nagging pain
in my leg, like a charley horse. It hung around for weeks, coming and going,
and moving to different parts of my leg. I mostly ignored it, thinking it was
just normal aches and pains from stuff I was doing. I justified it by thinking
I overdid the snow shovelling last month, etc etc. Finally my wife and I
decided to look up the symptoms on the internet, and discovered something
called DVT: Deep Vein Thrombosis a blood clot. So I called my doctor, to
get an appointment, and he told me to get to the Emergency Room NOW. Dont wait
another minute. Sheesh. So I did, and sure enough they found a clot behind my
knee. I am on blood thinners for a while, and hopefully it will diminish. The
ER Doc made a comment that I was lucky that I felt the pain and responded. Do
you know when we usually find the blood clots? At the autopsy. :)

I had no idea that this pain could have been caused by a clot, nor any idea how
one gets clots. But I got one. The danger is that if the clot gets above the
knee, it can journey to the heart and the lungs, and things can get real
serious real fast. I was lucky, but it was a close call. So for anyone else
out there with a peculiar pain, particularly in the leg, get it checked. You
never know.

I look forward to seeing back at the ChowdahQ!

Leg pain that feels like a cramp along with swelling means get to the
ER fast.

My mother did this a few years back while visiting my sister. I
called to see how things were and she said her leg was bothering her,
felt like a charlie horse starting the day before and it was swollen.

I got my sister on the phone and told her to get Mom to the ER AT
ONCE, don't play around, she has a clot,.

Sure enough she did -- I should have gone to medical school when I
was young, I suppose.

I'd rather spend the time and $ to find out I was OK than end up with
a massive stroke or pulmonary thrombosis -- I can earn more money if
I'm still alive!

[MBZ] Fuel line vs. brake line

2010-01-27 Thread Alex Chamberlain
As a general rule, is hose sold as fuel line, i.e. resistant to gas
and diesel, also likely to be resistant to brake fluid? Do the two go
hand in hand?

I need to replace the hose that runs from the brake fluid reservoir to
the clutch master cylinder on one of my Saab 900s (the one reservoir
is shared across both hydraulic systems). It appears to be 7mm ID,
the same size as the soft fuel lines in a lot of Bosch FI
applications. I thought I would save some money by ordering a length
of metric-sized fuel line (I can't find any locally) and using some of
it here and some of it there.

Thanks,
Alex

Re: [MBZ] Vacuum Leak Under Dash

2010-01-27 Thread archer

From: Jim Cathey j...@windwireless.net

You don't need to pull the dash, necessarily. IIRC you can
access the vacuum valve cluster behind the ACC pushbutton
unit, and you can do some further MityVac diagnosis there.
Then, at least, you'd know more about what's really leaking.

Re: [MBZ] Adjustable shocks - Koni?

2010-01-27 Thread David Bruckmann
Some points apparently require additional clarification:

-6cyl / 8cyl: it doesn't matter, they can all be converted to a spring. The
hydropneumatic compensator has a variable spring rate because of the nitrogen
gas, but its purpose was mostly levelling, not damping. The variable spring
rate is not that different from a steel spring, witness the rear suspension on
a TD (different devices but the same gas doing the work).

-the compensator is still available from MB for about $1700. I verified this
directly with the Classic Centre. They cannot, however, identify the production
date of the part. Since at its core it is a nitrogen-filled bladder with some
hydraulic fluid, it has a lifespan of 5 years before enough gas has escaped to
begin compromising its function. That gas escapes whether or not the device is
in use. I don't feel like handing over nearly $2k for something that might have
been sitting on a shelf for ten years losing its gas charge.

-the spring included in the conversion kit (which I bought from Rusty, but it
is the same Febi kit sold everywhere) is too firm for the application (the EPC
lists the included spring as being for increased ground clearance/HD). This is
confirmed by checking the Febi numbers against the EPC.

-the proper compensating spring, which I got from MB, is MUCH lighter gauge
steel. The ride improved a bit with the softer spring, but no major change.

-the only shocks available from Bilstein and from MB are HD. This is confirmed
in the EPC, which shows the OE shocks being superceded to HD. I have bought and
installed a new set (from Rusty) and they are in the car, and they suck.

-the car is measured to be at the correct height. The springs are OK.

If MB or Bilstein or Sachs still sold the original comfort shocks, I would not
feel compelled to find an alternative. The point is to achieve a suspension
behaviour that is closer to the original; one that is comfortable and well
controlled, without being harsh and unyielding.

Re: [MBZ] Adjustable shocks - Koni?

2010-01-27 Thread Gary Hurst
dude, butchering the car with the spring damages the ride. people seem to
complain about this a lot more the 8s than with 6s. this damage is done and
the only real question is whether or not the consequences are acceptable to
you or not. to my knowledge, no one has yet formulated a solution.

i agree with you about spending that kind of mine on a compensator that
might be largely spent to begin with is not a very happy plan. i couldn't
see myself going for it.

i am still contending, however, that if you did find softer shocks, they
still will not be satisfactory to you. so far, all of the people i have
spoken to with the experience and expertise to formulate a solution have
been in agreement with me on this.

i'd like to see a solution to this problem as i am a fan of these cars. i
will keep looking and maybe i will get lucky and come across something
worthwhile. as of right now, though, there is nothing i know of or anyone
else here has been able to say that offers much optimism.

[MBZ] W123 seat travel (or, my wife's legs have become shorter)

2010-01-27 Thread Euan

UPDATE

After putting the seat back in the wagon, the bloody problem has become
worse! So obviously all the messing around, shoving the seat back and
forwards on the garage floor, has altered something. I noticed that the
height adjustment would sometimes result in the seat skewing sideways.

Mumblef*k, this is annoying me.

Euan

Original posting

Colleagues

Here's an odd thing.

My wife (not the odd thing at all) has been complaining for a while that
she can no longer reach the pedals in our 300TD, even with the driver's
seat fully forward.

I've taken the seat out and checked the tracking channels for coins,
obstructions etc, but there appears to be no problem there. Lubricated
everything. No change. However, the passenger seat has an extraordinary
amount of travel by comparison. This may be normal, of course, since
there is no steering wheel limiting the range of movement.

Have you guys encountered similar problems? And do your W123 seats have
similar or different degrees of front-and-back adjustment?

Thanks
