Yep!

I'd love to find info to compare that to the capabilities of a
handheld portabe device.

About the only change has been the amount of cycles available for BFI
(now everyone has massive BFI--no Cray needed!)

I guess you could argue that the SSE/MMX (SIMD) extensions bring a lot

I'm a big fan of the 944 Turbo and 968 - the 968 is rare enough to be
expensive while 944s are all over the place. They have problems that lack
of maintenance can turn into expensive nightmares - but for $5k or less you
can usually get a great 944 T. They handle great and have good AC systems.

Find one you like which seems to have been well cared for. Rust is the
biggest problem IMHO - mechanical stuff can be fixed - even engne work can
be done economically if theres no rush. Join PCA, email lists, PelicanParts
email list, watch craigs list for ebay and find parts at a bargain. There's
a couple of books by Wayne Dempsey - 101 Projects for the 911 and
Rebuilding the 911 engine The engine book came with a bonus CD full of
extra photos - it's an excellent step-by-step guide to a rebuild.

But before your eyes glaze over when looking at a great 911, have a PPI done
by someone who knows these cars are where the possible problems are. They
can prevent expensive mistakes - but get someone with a reputation of
knowledge.

I don't think fixer upper is really the way to go, with a Porsche, or a
Ferrari. The way to go is to save a bit longer, and get one that is well
sorted out. No way you can buy a fixer upper and put it right, for the same
money that buying a good example will cost you. There are a few cheap
porsches out there, old 924s etc, but once you get into the air cooled cars,
certain parts, if tired, are going to cost money. Remember too, these cars
are old, and even though made in pretty large numbers, parts are becoming
more rare all the time, and, and that's reflected in the going price.
I don't want to put you off getting a Porsche, they're amazing cars. I just
don't want you to get into something thinking you can save a bunch of money
going the fixer upper route. You may get lucky, but, I feel far safer,
going with a good car, AND a PPI from someone who knows these cars. I feel
it will give you and your son a much more pleasant ownership experience.
Besides, if you like to tinker, as most of us here do, even a good SC, is

G: I see your points, Ed. I'll bring them up with my son.

Lots of affordable front engined Porsches around, and many of them are
great cars. My advise with these cars is be extra careful, as they are so
inexpensive to buy, people buy them, and then are shocked at some of the
running costs, so put off maintenance, which is never a good thing to do in
any car, and especially in a Porsche. Remember, a 928 was Porsches top of
the line car, so expect parts to be priced accordingly. Yes, they are great
cars, and reliable when cared for, but like all cars, they have their
weaknesses that need to be watched out for. All front engine porsche cars,
with the exception of the new Panamea, are now old cars. 944s can be had
cheap, but if the balljoints are bad, you could easily pay the value of the
car replacing them. If you saw what it took to change

re the Porsches -

Those are correct comments - the 911SC of

83-87 are widely considered to

have bulletproof engines

with some going 300K mi with never being opened

up.
As

far as the Targa - the targa roof can be frustrating to get it to seal

properly. I rode in one recently that had supposedly been sealed by an

expert actually sounded like a window was partly open! It wasn't
raining

so I don't know if it was waterproof or not - but it

definitely leaked

The newer 911's are more

powerful, smoother, quieter and faster - but they

may also

require the more expensive.

Are you planning to buy one?

Apparently a lot of Porsche parts are interchangable with VW parts, same
part but different number and shipping box.

Wasn't the 944 supposed to be an Audi?

A 911, hands down. You can get any part from dozens of suppliers around the
country because of the huge enthusiast base. Find a copy of a recent
Porsche Panorama and look at all the ads inside. My Porsche is 26 1/2 years old
and I could order nearly any part for it tomorrow.

Further, a Porsche can be driven every day, all year, taken to the track
and run hard and it never notices. They are rugged machines when maintained
correctly and seldom break provided their performance envelope is observed.

You could never use an XKE or 113 SL in the same way without plenty of
repairs because they have no significant racing background.

Re: [MBZ] Porsche refurbishments

2010-03-20 Thread E M
I think the early 924 had an audi based engine in it, but the 944 were
probably more 928 than audi. There was a 924 turbo too, but not sure what
it was based on. I think it was the original audi engine, no intercooler or
anything. It was pretty early stuff. I remember people saying Porsche was
so confident in their turbo technology with that car, they didn't even
bother to put a boost gauge in it. I've taken a couple of 944 engines
apart, and a lot of the internal bits even share 928 parts code numbers.
It's more or less half a 928 engine. Porsche didn't skimp on the oily bits
with the 944 from what I can see.

[MBZ] Best Porsches

2010-03-20 Thread archer
Don't know what your budget is but is but I've always wanted to build a
289

Cobra replica. The 289 is preferable to the 427, BTW. Factory Five is a
industry leader - http://www.factoryfive.com/rdsterhome.html - offering a
basic kit starting at less than $13K. Add a engine (a few hundred or less
for a good used one) a tranny (same) and rear axle - then things like
wheels tires, batteries, etc.

They also have a 33 Shovelnose Ford that looks good ;-) if you like the
old American classics -

Anyway, it's an option --
Good luck -

Re: [MBZ] Porsche refurbishments

2010-03-20 Thread OK Don
A friend had 944 for awhile - it needed a new turn signal stalk/switch,
which was a VW part -- which is where he got the replacement. I don't see VW
contributing to the drive train in any way though, and no VW I drove ever
handled like the Porsche.
