[MBZ] How to start a very dormant W123 turbodiesel
I'm negotiating to purchase a scrap-grade 1985 300TD that was totaled back in 2004. The car is virtually complete, although all I really crave is a decent 300TD engine to transplant into my 1985 300 pseudo-TD. Transport on a flatbed would probably be under $300. The vehicle ran well at the time of the collision (so the story goes). As the other driver was clearly at fault, the owner received a generous settlement and also kept the car in his yard for the past 6 years. Unfortunately, he cannot jump-start it now. I am wondering whether I should take a chance on the car - what could I do differently to get the motor running? Is there a procedure to follow to start a long-dormant turbodiesel? Would fuel flow have something to do with it? Would a new battery potentially get it started (as opposed to a jump start)? In a worst case scenario it will NEVER start due to low compression, but given the low price he's asking Ihe would not want to take the time to perform a compression test for me. If I could get the car down here I could probably recover some of th cost from another guy who wants other parts from the car, but if I can't use the engine it would be quite embarrassing to say the least, not to mention that SWMBO would never let me forget what an idiot I was (am). So what are the odds I could get it running? Do I want to take this gamble?. The mileage is around 300K. Yes, windows. Probably about 1400-1500 files. They are photos actually of vehicles, the file names are the VIN of the vehicle, followed by a -1 for multiple photos of the same vehicle (-1 -2 -3 etc) followed by the letter c. Re: [MBZ] How to start a very dormant W123 turbodiesel
You only REALLY need the head though right? Jump starting w/a 6+yo battery thats probably totally ruined isn't going to work, at the very least you'd need a new battery (borrow one from your other car). Run the fuel line to a can so you don't drag crap from the tank which is almost certainly full of algae. Do an oil change before trying to start. Make sure theres some coolant and that mice haven't taken up residence in the air intake, maybe also jump the battery with a big charger or car as it'll probably take a bit to get things going. How much are we talking? I got my 190D parts car for $250 the body was in good condition but the engine was broken on a 165,xxx mile car. For the inverse on a 300,xxx mile car I wouldn't pay much more. -Curt Date: Fri, 16 Jul 2010 10:49:20 -0400 From: andrew strasfogel astrasfo...@gmail.com To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: [MBZ] How to start a very dormant W123 turbodiesel Message-ID: aanlktikwtkhp5df7rurkhj6vuhhd7umirmn7mpdxm...@mail.gmail.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 I'm negotiating to purchase a scrap-grade 1985 300TD that was totaled back in 2004. Should be possible with some work, as already covered. I also agree that price should be very low ($200 or less) unless the seller wants to pay for all the work (start/run, compression test) to prove its worth. Does seller have all service records? Re: [MBZ] OT, mass renaming of files
I have a dealership that has an overlay on all their photos of their vehicles. We have a new overlay to replace it with. In order to do this, all the photos have to be reprocessed by our program called photolink. In order to get the photos back into the program, they either have to be actually reshot by the rep, or there is a tool in our inventory management software that will export all the photos in a zip file, but they all have the c at the end. In order for the photos to be able to be seen by the photolink program, they have to be named the vin of the vehicle -1, or -2 etc for multiples. As of now, they have the vin -1c for example. With that c, the program will not see the photos as matching a particular vehicle. Clear as mud? Re: [MBZ] OT poodles
Poodles are very smart, and my LabraDoodle definitely got a lot of it from his Mama Poodle! He can distinguish cars! The other day, I took a trip into town to meet my parents who were riding in their Purple HHR. When I came out of the hobby shop to meet them, there was another car parked right in front. I knew that it wasn't their car since they were parked down the block. Quincey went up to the car, and no matter how many times I told him This is not our car!, he wouldn't leave it. My mom saw what was going on and tooted her horn. That got Quincey's attention, and off we went to the right. I found out that the other car in front of the shop was a black HHR! I want to test this theory out in a parking lot where there is at least ONE other HHR. If I still had a Diesel Mercedes, I would try to get him to recognize the sound too. You'll have to remove the pushbutton module and pull the buttons off. Give me a few minutes and I'll upload some pictures to my web site. I've documented the complete RR of a pushbutton unit for the later (horizontal) ACC system. In that tear down you'll see how to remove the buttons and where the lamps are located. Did they put the eco-diesel in the Golf? Much as I like the Rabbit the diesel version is pretty pokey, if the Golf got a turbo in ~1990 I'd be real interested. Surprisngly the Golf doesn't get much better mileage than the Jetta and the Jetta not that much better than the Quantum/Passat I'd dig a chance at another Quantum. -Curt Date: Fri, 16 Jul 2010 20:54:29 -0500 From: Wonko the Sane don.b...@gmail.com To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] my 300E is now for sale Message-ID: aanlktin67cxcyf_ciybrm_zirmymbkzf5glycnsoe...@mail.gmail.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 86. Re: [MBZ] my 300E is now for sale
Funny how the Rabbits hold their value isn't it? I was thinking, we really need to replace Hammie the 240D, he's getting pretty tatty. My wife has declared that we should always have at least one manual trans in the stable which can have no more than 3 vehicles. The red 190D is an auto as is the pickup so Hammie's spot needs a manual. So lately I'm thinking another 240D would fit the bill. I'd love to find one that was way stripped down. Right before I bought Hammie I looked at another 240D, manual windows, manual sunroof, no AC, no extras at all. Cool car but the dude didn't meet my price (I forget now) until after I'd already bought Hammie. -Curt Date: Fri, 16 Jul 2010 22:03:27 -0400 From: Allan Streib str...@cs.indiana.edu To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] my 300E is now for sale Message-ID: m1fwzi27bk@cs.indiana.edu Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Wonko the Sane don.b...@gmail.com writes: 86. [MBZ] Strange Craigslist buyer
So I finally had somebody seriously interested in my 190D engine. I spoke to him on the phone and he sent a deposit and everything... Then the weird starts. He's coming to get it with his friend's truck and doesn't want to scratch the bed up so he wants me to drive 45 minutes from my house to a place with a forklift. Ooooky, well I'm not doin' that for free... He works out a price to placate me which is fine I guess. So I call the place today for directions (so I can get there tomorrow) and fortunately leave my number for the guy who will be helping us who calls me back because he doesn't know whats going on. They're not open on Saturday, the dude buying the engine was supposed to get back to him on how we were going to work this and suddenly it occurs to me that what has happened is the dude has tried to push them into being open on a Saturday which they don't do and just assumed they'd do it... So I'm pissed, I call him and he doesn't answer so I leave voicemail and I email him. He emails me You will need to take the engine there Monday and leave it for me like I've got nothing better to do Monday than drive 45 minutes in the opposite direction from where I work... Thats when it occurs to me, whats to stop him from writing me a bad check or something for payment? He hasn't explained how he's going to pay for it at this point... Anyway his deposit goes in the mail back to him tomorrow, washing my hands of this weirdo. If he shows up with cash I'll still sell him an engine but otherwise no. -Curt ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
[MBZ] '85 190D engine etc for sale.
Speaking of which, does anybody want an '85 190D 2.2l? 310,xxx miles, runs great. I think it'd had some head work at some point as it starts really easily even when cold and basically leaks no oil (IIRC a quart in 3-4,000 miles). Ran the last 90,000 miles on Mobil 1 5w40, I've got some oil analysis on it but not all the changes. I've also got the 5spd manual trans and, well the whole car really... Yeah, I know all that, but it just seems like an awful lot of work compared to an engine swap. Also, there are high risk opportunities to screw up royally in a head R/R. * * *If the engine will turn over, you should be able to get it to start, following what has already been written.* I thought that a tired engine would turn over but wouldn't start in cold weather due to weak compression, so I'm not sure what you mean by this.
