I also

occasionally back up the complete system image to my NAS or external USB
drive. This really saved my bacon when the hard drive puked and died in
my

notebook machine. Instead of days of finding and loading software, I just
restored from the last image to a new hard drive. That took less than an
hour.

Which program did you use to back up the complete system to your external

for an amateur.

Re: [MBZ] Leaterique - was 91 350SDL Sat fun

2010-09-19 Thread Lwb250
It has never required more than a quart of each (Prestine Clean and
Rejuvenator) to do a single car for me. If you get some spray bottles you don't
use it up as quickly, either.

I know you can use Prestine Clean on MBTex, but I don't see any value in using
the Leather Rejuvenator. Of course, whatever George says goes, since he's the
guy who makes the stuff.

I would add that in my opinion, this is one of the few car care products that
consistently exceeds the claims of it's maker. Great stuff!

[MBZ] W123 300TD wagon with noisy AND inaccurate speedometer (part II)

2010-09-19 Thread andrew strasfogel
So I finally swapped out the speedometer in my 1983 300TD. You all may
recall that 1) it made a nasty grinding noise at higher speeds, and 2) mph
was consistently 10 - 15 percent too high. I swapped in a used speedo with
a higher (newer) part number. The bad news is that the grinding noise is
still there but the good news is that the mph gauge is now accurate. Also,
the new speedo stops counting at 2.9 miles on the trip counter and the main
mileage reading doesn't move at all.

So here is the question: How do I lube the speedometer cable, and with what
lubricant? I assume this can be done by disconnecting the cable from
beneath the dash after removing the driver's side kick panel, and then
spraying or applying some substance into the end of the cable that will
cause the noise to abate.

Thanks in advance,

Andrew

Get a new cable, there is absolutely no point in lubricating a bad one, they
stick because they are worn out, not because they are dry. Save yourself the
hassle.

Use the red loctite repair on the odometer.

thorium as a cheap, clean and safe alternative to uranium in reactors
may

be
the
magic bullet we have all been hoping for, though we have barely begun to

Dr Rubbia says a tonne of the silvery metal - named after the Norse god

Any suggestions?

Except for the mil-spec laptops, the ThinkPads are arguably the most
durable. The keyboards are reputed to be the best of laptop keyboards. The
other nice thing about the ThinkPads is that a maintenance manual is readily
available, and they are designed to be easily repairable. There is a great
online community, ThinkPads.com. They are the Mercedes-Benz of the laptop
world.

One caveat: the early T4x units have chronic problems with the ATI video
processor losing SMT integrity with the mobo. I believe this is not a
problem with the Intel video processors, and was solved with the later
series. My personal preference is for the T43. I am working on replacing
the T40 that I'm typing on now with a T43.

That's what the electric coop is for. And doing a fine job.

bordering on abusive. Anyway, what laptop manufactured in the last several
years can take a beating, specifically the jacks for power and headphones? I

 Any suggestions?

Until you spend $30,000 to have the cable run, and then neighboring houses will

How true! When we lived south of Calhan, Colorado, we had an option to
have the cable run, but because of that very reason decided against it.
The folks who bought our place did have electricity run, and now there
are quite a few houses up there.

I'm sure some of you already knew it, but I'll bet some others did
not know: RR intake manifold is a lot easier with 1/4 drive
ratchet and extensions than with 3/8 drive stuff. Removed it with
3/8; put it back with 1/4. ;))

My wife's 300SD (unfortunately not an SDL) in ivory was parked out front
of the house today, and I was sitting on the porch looking at it, and
came to the conclusion that this car is about the most perfect styling
design of any car I have ever seen. Not sure what it is, but it just
works and is very pleasing to the eye. I recalled that in the early
80s I was walking in downtown Boston one day, and a new 126 of some sort
appeared rapidly in front of me as I was walking past some building at a
corner, the car came to a stop at a light and I just caught the glimpse
at first of the front end, and I remember thinking wow, that is an
awesome car -- I want to have one. At that time, $40k or so was a bit
beyond my means, but I thought... someday. BTW that car I saw, and I
remember very clearly, was in ivory as well. And there I sat today
looking at that ivory 126 and thinking the same thing I thought when it
just appeared in front of me 30 yr ago

I use Acronis for full image backup, which can be full, incremental, or

but the whole system takes too long so I do that manually only when I know I

 I also
occasionally back up the complete system image to my NAS or external USB
drive. This really saved my bacon when the hard drive puked and died in
 my
notebook machine. Instead of days of finding and loading software, I just
restored from the last image to a new hard drive. That took less than an
 hour.

Which program did you use to back up the complete system to your external
HD? I once used Retrospect on a friends office system but it was not easy
for an amateur.
