Because it's a W196, not a 300SL. Even if the caption didn't give it away,
it's obvious. When was the last time you saw wire wheels on 300SL?

You may be right, that does look like a W196 GP car. Especially that ram air
intake sticking out the right front like a backwards exhaust pipe.

http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/car/362/Mercedes-Benz-W196.html

But the caption calls it a W194, which was the racing gullwing before the 300SL.
Above: A naked W194. Note the massive inboard drum brakes (the two cylinders
between the front wheels), then-uncommon fuel injection (the small lines snaking
over the engine) and outboard coolant tank and battery. The frame's steel tubes
and high sills — note the proximity of the tubes to the driver's seat — also can
be seen.

[MBZ] A not so good snowy morning

2011-01-21 Thread Peter Frederick
We got a snowstorm yesterday, leaving the roads covered with ice (we
don't do plowing here until the snow stops, huh? -- and no salt), so
I wasn't looking forward to driving to work today.

However, the 300D kicked a couple times but didn't catch, and on the
second crank didn't even do that (forgot to hold the key over long
enough, it usually fires right up even at -10 and it's only 6F out
there right now).

So I dug the 300 TE out of the snow and tried it. Dead battery.
It's on the charger right now, but I don't think that's gonna help
much, it's charging way too fast and the starter quits before I get
fuel (møm hasn't driven it in a couple weeks, and I forgot to).

Guess I'll be making a trip down to the parts store when my brother
gets off work and buying a pair of batteries. All my spares are
shot, too -- won't charge.

Oh well, I have plenty of things to do at home and need to use up my
MLK holiday since I worked on Monday.

Buy batteries online, one at a time.
Use $40 off coupons at Advance Auto. (I think BIG40 still works)
If you use Paypal for one battery and a credit card for the other, you can use
the same coupon for two orders.

Oops, they want $137 for a group 49, so $97 isn't as cheap as I'd hoped. I
wonder if it's equivalent to the $135 or the $95 battery at Autozone?
(for fatwallet.com members, you'd get 5% cashback on $137, which would bring it
closer to $90)

AFFAUTO should also get $40 off on $100 at Advance.

Too bad you can't just walk into Autozone and pick up a 7 year battery for $60
any more.

*   300SL (production Coupe) - 198.040
*   300SL (aluminum Coupe) -- 198.043
*   300SL (roadster) -- 198.042

From: http://www.silverstarrestorations.com/300SL.htm

I can understand it. SBC are very common and there are lots of good
aftermarket parts to make power. Once the hood is closed, no one really
knows what is under there unless you tell them.

So, if you like the car but need an engine, I can see swapping to a SBC.
There were kits available to put them in Jags - that was probably an
improvement in most cases.

If you are driving what amounts to a beater Benz, why not add some
power? Esp late model Vortec engines - pretty reliable etc.

I bought an old Ford wagon, with a V6 in it off a lawyer friend. Had really
low miles, something like 50,000 km. Guy stops while I'm in the driveway
one day washing cars, asking if I want to sell it. He had the EXACT same
car. Colour and all. He said he wanted it for the carb, as his was not
working as it should. I asked his mileage, and he said something like
750,000 miles! I asked, why not just transplant my whole engine and trans.
He said the engine and trans in his are fine, just needs a new carb. lol.

Many guys running cabs here with small blocks say they retire them at
700,000 miles.

American's make great engines and transmissions. The old joke about the
difference between a Ferrari engine, and a GM engine was, with the GM
engine, it makes more power, is lighter, and does the same job with 1/3 the
parts. And contrary to what many think, a small block Chev will go
hundreds of thousands of miles, with little more than oil changes and
 pouring gas in it.

I've yet to meet a guy who's owned or driven one of these so called million
mile Mercedes, that hasn't had the heads rebuilt 3 times, new bearings in
the bottom engine, and a trans overhaul or two. That's not a million mile
engine, that's a 350,000 mile engine, which a small block will do with
 little problem.

Are you recommending that I find a Ferrari with a blown engine and swap a

When lots of people were doing clones, they butchered lots of 400i's for the
V12 engines. I'm sure there was a time with lots of bodies floating around,
and if you don't mind an auto, that car came with a GM sourced auto, so
bolting up a small, or big block no problem. Well, not as much of a problem

James Bond had an old supercharged Bentley. I always imagined it something like
this.

http://www.vanityfair.com/style/features/2011/01/ralph-lauren-garage-slide-show-201101#slide=11

From Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bentley_4%C2%BD_Litre
This is the car author Ian Fleming first chose for James Bond. It is featured in
three of the 007 Novels, Casino Royale, Live and Let Die and Moonraker. In the
book, Bond drives one of the last blower Bentleys built, a battleship grey
Convertible Coupé, with French Marchal headlamps and an Amherst Villiers
supercharger. Interestingly, Ian Fleming himself owned a 'blower' from whence
the inspiration for Bond's car came. Even more interesting is the fact Fleming
bought the car from Amherst Villiers after it was produced for him by Bentley.
The car was recently to be seen in the Yorkshire Motor Museum, Batley but since
the museum's closure it has passed into a private collection.

Re: [MBZ] Anyone want a butchered 300D

2011-01-21 Thread R A Bennell
I recall a mag article where I believe they installed the 455 cid engine
and drive out of a Olds Toronado into a 911. They put together some old
suitcases and cut out the back side of them to act as a cover for the
engine so you could see the suitcases in the back part of the car behind
the seats.

I was in England on business quite a bit in the 90s, I usually stayed in
Richmond Hill (my hotel was just a few doors from Mick Jagger's place,
or his [ex] wife's). It is an upscale suburb of London, lot of money
there. I was walking to the train station one morning through some back
streets, and what might have been a blower Bentley came roaring up the
street. It looked like that in RL's collection, was dark green and made
wonderful sounds. Looked like a handful to wrestle around though, the

This is the car author Ian Fleming first chose for James Bond. It is
featured in three of the 007 Novels, Casino Royale, Live and Let Die
and Moonraker. In the book, Bond drives one of the last blower
Bentleys built, a battleship grey Convertible Coupé, with French
Marchal headlamps and an Amherst Villiers supercharger. Interestingly,
Ian Fleming himself owned a 'blower' from whence the inspiration for
Bond's car came. Even more interesting is the fact Fleming bought the
car from Amherst Villiers after it was produced for him by Bentley.
The car was recently to be seen in the Yorkshire Motor Museum, Batley
but since the museum's closure it has passed into a private collection.

The old W.O. Bentley's have a great following. Really active drivers club,
and it's amazing how much remanufactured stuff you can still get for most of
those early cars. Prices have really got kind of crazy over the past 15
years, but a lot of the guys who own those old cars, still get them out and
enjoy them. Not sure how much enjoyment anyone would get trying to muscle
one around London, but they are a devoted bunch who drive them.

Re: [MBZ] tail heavy

2011-01-21 Thread Barry Stark
Actually I knew the guy that first did that. This had to be in the mid 70's.
His name was Duncan Blundrett and he was the service manager at Bill Yates
VW/Porsche in San Juan Capistrano, CA. As I remember the first car to
receive this conversion was one of a couple of 912's that Duncan got for a
song from the insurance company. Someone had stolen them and pulled out the
engines, most likely to put in a v-dub. I think that the Toronado engine was
also out of an insurance settlement from a wrecked car. The neat part of
this kit, yes Duncan was selling kits for the conversion for a while, was
that there was no cutting involved. I heard him tell folks more than once
that he could pull out the Olds mill/transaxle and have it back to stock
Porsche in a matter of hours. The only thing you would notice standing next
to the car was the radiator showing through the engine hood and the one
large exhaust pipe out the back that sure didn't sound like a 6 cyl. Boxer
engine. Also Duncan bought a stack of large suitcases and glued them
together then hollowed out the bottom of the stack to use as an engine cover
so it would be a real sleeper otherwise you would have seen the engine in
the back seat. I never did get to go for a ride in the car but I was told
that it was somewhat limited because it was geared for a big heavy car. If
you stomped on it from a start it would pin you back in the seat like a drag
racer but the top speed was very limited as the gearing would cause the
engine to redline way before you ran out of horsepower. That was the one
Porsche body. The other one he had a pretty much stock 140HP Corvair engine
in it. Crown manufacturing made the conversion kit for that as I recall. The
only rub was that the Corvair engine ran the wrong direction for the Porsche
so you had to flip the pistons over on the con rods and change the
distributor drive gear on the camshaft and the distributor drive shaft so it
could run backwards. I think the stock cam still worked ok with the new gear
but not sure. I had also heard that Duncan had varying parts of a couple of
M/B gullwings, though I never saw them.

I saw that car decades ago. The 911 was a Turbo, maybe about '79. Can
 you
 spell oversteer?
