[MBZ] A not so good snowy morning
We got a snowstorm yesterday, leaving the roads covered with ice (we don't do plowing here until the snow stops, huh? -- and no salt), so I wasn't looking forward to driving to work today. However, the 300D kicked a couple times but didn't catch, and on the second crank didn't even do that (forgot to hold the key over long enough, it usually fires right up even at -10 and it's only 6F out there right now). So I dug the 300 TE out of the snow and tried it. Dead battery. It's on the charger right now, but I don't think that's gonna help much, it's charging way too fast and the starter quits before I get fuel (møm hasn't driven it in a couple weeks, and I forgot to). Guess I'll be making a trip down to the parts store when my brother gets off work and buying a pair of batteries. All my spares are shot, too -- won't charge. Oh well, I have plenty of things to do at home and need to use up my MLK holiday since I worked on Monday. That is good to know. Apparently Mazdas came with turbos as well, as did Kia's? All cars to look at in the junkyard. With a fully charged phone I should be able to find part numbers and look up specs. I would like to keep it in the Benz OEM family though (bosch). Re: [MBZ] Anyone want a butchered 300D
I can understand it. SBC are very common and there are lots of good aftermarket parts to make power. Once the hood is closed, no one really knows what is under there unless you tell them. So, if you like the car but need an engine, I can see swapping to a SBC. There were kits available to put them in Jags - that was probably an improvement in most cases. If you are driving what amounts to a beater Benz, why not add some power? Esp late model Vortec engines - pretty reliable etc. Randy On 21/01/2011 9:16 AM, Rolf wrote: I dont understand why people choose to do these swaps. Put a benz engine in American car, sure. You're right, that is what it says NOW. I was right, with what it said THEN. Whoops. That's our mistake—the shot is actually of a W196, an eight-cylinder car and one of the 194's successors. I included it to illustrate the 194's frame design (the two cars shared a construction philosophy), and because images of naked 194s are actually quite scarce. The caption text was my error, and has since been changed. Thanks! I bought an old Ford wagon, with a V6 in it off a lawyer friend. Had really low miles, something like 50,000 km. Guy stops while I'm in the driveway one day washing cars, asking if I want to sell it. He had the EXACT same car. Colour and all. He said he wanted it for the carb, as his was not working as it should. I asked his mileage, and he said something like 750,000 miles! I asked, why not just transplant my whole engine and trans. He said the engine and trans in his are fine, just needs a new carb. lol. Many guys running cabs here with small blocks say they retire them at 700,000 miles. I think a 124 with that kind of power, a sorted-out suspension, and fatter tires than stock would be a blast to drive! If you have a 300E with a blown M103 that would otherwise go to the junkyard, why not? I think a lot of these kind of engine swaps aren't really planned, but just happen because someone has too much time on their hands and has the parts laying around. (Hmmm, I need to do something with this Benz... I wonder if this 350 I pulled out of the kid's Nova after he wrecked it will fit.) When lots of people were doing clones, they butchered lots of 400i's for the V12 engines. I'm sure there was a time with lots of bodies floating around, and if you don't mind an auto, that car came with a GM sourced auto, so bolting up a small, or big block no problem. The old W.O. Bentley's have a great following. Really active drivers club, and it's amazing how much remanufactured stuff you can still get for most of those early cars. Prices have really got kind of crazy over the past 15 years, but a lot of the guys who own those old cars, still get them out and enjoy them. Not sure how much enjoyment anyone would get trying to muscle one around London, but they are a devoted bunch who drive them. Re: [MBZ] tail heavy
Actually I knew the guy that first did that. This had to be in the mid 70's. His name was Duncan Blundrett and he was the service manager at Bill Yates VW/Porsche in San Juan Capistrano, CA. As I remember the first car to receive this conversion was one of a couple of 912's that Duncan got for a song from the insurance company. Someone had stolen them and pulled out the engines, most likely to put in a v-dub. I think that the Toronado engine was also out of an insurance settlement from a wrecked car. The neat part of this kit, yes Duncan was selling kits for the conversion for a while, was that there was no cutting involved. I heard him tell folks more than once that he could pull out the Olds mill/transaxle and have it back to stock Porsche in a matter of hours. The only thing you would notice standing next to the car was the radiator showing through the engine hood and the one large exhaust pipe out the back that sure didn't sound like a 6 cyl. Boxer engine. Also Duncan bought a stack of large suitcases and glued them together then hollowed out the bottom of the stack to use as an engine cover so it would be a real sleeper otherwise you would have seen the engine in the back seat. I never did get to go for a ride in the car but I was told that it was somewhat limited because it was geared for a big heavy car. If you stomped on it from a start it would pin you back in the seat like a drag racer but the top speed was very limited as the gearing would cause the engine to redline way before you ran out of horsepower. That was the one Porsche body. The other one he had a pretty much stock 140HP Corvair engine in it. Crown manufacturing made the conversion kit for that as I recall. The only rub was that the Corvair engine ran the wrong direction for the Porsche so you had to flip the pistons over on the con rods and change the distributor drive gear on the camshaft and the distributor drive shaft so it could run backwards. I think the stock cam still worked ok with the new gear but not sure. I had also heard that Duncan had varying parts of a couple of M/B gullwings, though I never saw them.
