I have a 90 mile round trip > communte with some rolling hills but all at 55 or a little > more MPH. The gearing and torque/boost curve mean 55 MPH (88 km/h) is almost too slow. The turbo cars usually get better fuel mileage at a bit higher speed. 65-70 (105-110 km/h) is often better. If the engine is in good shape - which means chain not stretched, injectors working right, good compression, max boost pressure up to spec., ALDA behaving, no EGR - 28 to 30 is to be expected. But even an stretched chain, mis-matched and low pop pressure injectors, not enough boost wagon can get 24 or 25 MPG. -- Philip ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] DIY W124 sunroof repair
First thing to do is see if you can move it with the motor. if not, it gets a bit complicated (as does the W126, they are quite similar). If it is reluctant to move, unclip the headliner panel and shove it back -- may have to dislodge the clip on the rear, too. This will let you deternine what the problem is (usually broken lift angles that have the translation bridge cocked and stuck). If you can get the bridge to move back, this is good. If not, remove the roof panel, remove the chrome rails. and then remove the headliner up wards. it will come out the bottom, but it's likely to be bent up, the side rails are very flimsy. From there, get the bridge back up far enough to remove the broken lift angles, replace them (were $95 each ten years ago). If you cannot move the bridge, remove the roof panel and the lift angles. Once the broken bits are out of the way and the cable has been unbolted, you can get the rest of them off the bridge and replace them properly. Getting the roof panel back on is the hard part. I found that since I don't have the factory tool, it was necessary to retract the cable a bit manually so that the roof panel fits up against the gasket at the front properly. If you don't, it won't close or tilt. Have fun! I strongly recommend you do this in garage Peter ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

I think the pop-up sunroof (double-acting) is the same. It's reputedly a real bear to work on. Yup, that's me. Still about 30 mpg, but I cheat -- I drive 35 miles or so in about 50 minutes, over half the distance on winding country roads at 45 mph or so, and the rest at 60 on a nearly flat four lane. I nearly always get better milage than most people in any given vehicle for some reason. This isn't really typical driving for most people. I have 7 stops before I get to town, probably six stops there at 30 mph. I'm also a poky driver these days, believe me, once was enough for getting hit by an 8000 lbs vehicle at 60 mph! Re: [MBZ] 1983 300D
Regarding the disappointment that an OM617 diesel will turn in only mid-20s on MPG... it always helps to put it in perspective. a) That's better MPG than you'd get with all but the smallest SUVs and close to what you'd get with any car of equivalent size. b) If you're comparing it to something like a modern VW TDI (40MPG+) you have to consider what you'd spend to get that car, what the insurance would cost you, etc. and how long would it take you to make up the difference on that 12 - 15 extra MPG *at best* that you would get. Assume you drive 15,000 miles/year. At 25 MPG that's 600 gallons. At 40 MPG that's 375 gallons. At 3.75/gallon for diesel that's about $2250 vs. $1,400 per year or $850 savings. For what you'd need to spend to get a 40MPG car I think that would take quite a while to recover. And, in the meantime, are you driving a car you ENJOY??? Then you want a 240D, with 45 miles of mostly highway running I got my '83 240D to do 32mpg a couple times when I kept myself to no more than 65mph. I suspect if you could keep a constant 55mph on fairly flat ground you might go to 35mpg but that'd be a stretch. I averaged right on 28mpg with that over about 50,000 miles. You have to remember these are fairly large OLD heavy cars built on day-before-yesterday's technology. They're inexpensive to buy and not all that hard to keep going (I drove a $400 240D 25,000 miles remember) but super fuel efficient they are not. A 190D 2.2l 5spd is the mileage maker, best I got with mine was 43mpg, averaged more like 38 over about 90,000 miles. -Curt Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2011 09:53:47 -0600 From: Peter Hertzing To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] (SPAM?) 1983 300D Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 I'm a little disappointed in what I hearing about mileage. Re: [MBZ] (SPAM?) 1983 300D
Peter, You won't know what kind of mileage the car will return until you drive it, but it almost certainly could fall between 25 and 30 mpg on a highway commute at 55 mph or so, and I think it possibly could do better if all the planets align. Remember that diesel fuel is more expensive than premium fuel right now, and I don't think that will change for the foreseeable future, until the world economy goes off a cliff again. The '83 300D model is capable of decent mileage at 55 to 60 mph, but there seems to be lots of variation between models and mileage is also affected by how people drive. I think that the condition of the injectors, the injection pump, the injection pump timing, the timing chain, the valve adjustment, and the quality of the fuel all come into play. Some of these variables you can affect for little cost or no cost, some will be expensive to 'fix' and the ROI in terms of fuel savings won't justify the cost (for instance $500 or more to get the injection pump calibrated to realize a 2 mpg or 3 mpg improvement). So you may want to find a newer MB to get better mileage, like a 190D (1984 to 1988?) or a 300D 2.5 (1990 to 1993?) or an E300 (1994, 95?). A 240D with a manual transmission would be an excellent choice as well. My '87 300TD gets 26 mpg around town, and 28 mpg going 70+ mph on the freeway. My '95 E300 gets 26 in town and 31 on the freeway. I had an '85 190D with five speed manual transmission; at 60 mph it returned 41 mpg _once_; most of the time it got about 36 or 37 mpg because I drove faster. I would imagine that limiting highway speed to 60 mph would return 30 mpg in my wagon and 34 mpg or better in the E300. If my wife were driving, the mileage drops by 20% or more, as she does lots of in-town short trips and also likes to use the car as an office (sitting and idling in a parking lot while making calls or sending email). -Max From: Peter Hertzing To: Mercedes Discussion List Sent: Fri, February 25, 2011 12:21:09 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] (SPAM?) 1983 300D Yea - but I gotta justify the purchase with saving some green on fuel costs.. Re: [MBZ] wax?
Not very do-able in Winnipeg these days. Minus 30 this morning. Even automatic car washes give up and close when it gets too cold. I ran my truck through on Wednesday as it was only minus 15 or so and it would sit in the sun long enough to dry out and not freeze solid. That is the best time to wash in winter as it then stays clean for a bit until the weather again warms up enough to make the roads messy. Cheaper, cleaner, and no nasty crap left over. The one time I remember going through one of those "touchless" washes, it sprayed the entire car with this red, green, blue glop crap after the wash, let it sit for half a minute, sprayed it off, then air-knifed everything dry. [MBZ] Valet lock
Hello Allan I dunno about the W116, but I do know about the W123 valet lock. It is a keyway and a key - nothing else. The valet key will not unlock the trunk. Will unlock the driver's door and the ignition key switch. Keyway on driver's door and ignition lock are wedge-shaped, wider at the entry than at the tip, and may appear quite worn. They're not. They're made that way. Keyway on trunk is narrow and fits the regular key. Valet key will not enter it. Lock the trunk with the regular key, give the valet the valet key. He can't unlock the trunk. He can of course break in. He can lock/unlock the driver's door and the ignition key switch. Hope this is of some use. It is all true. I found out by doing my homework the hard way. I have a valet key for my car, bought from the Benzes, and it wasn't easy to do that. It's somewhere. [MBZ] OT computer problem
I use a service that lets me into government databases for land titles etc. Unfortunaetly it is a bit of a dinosaur I guess. I let Java update itself to jre6u24 and that caused problems. The applet won't load. The help desk tells me, just uninstall that and revert to the previous version which is jre6u23 and all should be well. Did that but it still does not work. Neither Explorer nor Firefox seems able to see Java. Anyone have ideas? We have uninstalled and reinstalled various versions of Java and nothing seems to change the fact that it does not show up in the browers. I spent about 3 hours on the phone with a fellow on the help desk at IBM yesterday without success. 1. How shoudl I go about starting it? Freshly-charged battery of the right size. Make sure glow plugs are glowing. Start normally. Unless gunked up with algae, these things can sit happily for a long time and start right up, I think the Frankenheap had about 10 years on it when I got it. I drove it to the gas station to get more fuel, diesels are nice that way. 2. If it is good, what kind of mileage can I expect? Low to mid 20's, probably.
