That's what I was thinking to do next - disconnect at the GPR fuse. I have
noticed two modes of operation of the GPR - sometimes the current slowly
decreases after the engine starts, other times there is an almost
instantaneous jump from pegged minus amps to 30 amps plus. Seems it ought to
be consistent.

 suppose it's possible.

That's interesting that VW had such a sunroof. I'll bet it was a Webasto

could retrofit that sunroof to an MB?

According to Mombusa, Max, you don't exist. Isn't that comforting!

VW had manual sunroofs. push the button and crank one way for the
tip up vent. Crank the other way to open the sunroof.

I used to own an '85 300TD which was a grey-market import. NA engine,
manual heat control, no AC, five speed transmission. It had a manual
sunroof, which was a real pleasure once I'd properly cleaned and lubed it.
I would really like to have manual sunroofs in my 124 cars if they could
also incorporate the rear pop-up feature.

Ditto here. Out of half a dozen cars I've owned with sunroofs, the
only ones that never gave any trouble---no leaks or jams---were
manual. And unlike windows or locks, where I think you can make a
case for power operation as a safety issue (being able to lock all the
doors, or roll a window other than the driver's up or down, without
stretching halfway out of the driver's seat), a manual sunroof, if
designed right, can be operated just as easily as a power one. On my
'89 BMW 325iX, the control was a simple drop-down crank--half a turn
one way popped up the rear of the roof, and a few turns the other way
slid it back. On my '80 Saab 900, you grabbed a handle at the front
of the roof, squeezed it together to unlatch it, and then pulled it to
the rear, over your shoulder, much like the motion used to drop the
top on a Miata---a wonderfully straightforward and quick operation.

Re: [MBZ] Battery drain - was: Ammeter installation wire size

2011-03-28 Thread Rich Thomas
A coupla weeks ago the battery in my truck went dead, there was nothing
obvious about why it drained. I put a charger on it, the radio (or the
speakers I guess) started making weird noises, relays up in the dash
somewhere were buzzing, I popped out the radio and that stopped but the
battery would not charge (or at least it would not start the engine
after charging). Took it to get it checked, it showed full charge and
OK. Hmmm. So I put it back in, it drained again. h. finally took
it out, charged it up, then before I put it back in I started yanking on
the starter cables, ground wires, etc. Put the battery back in and it
has been fine since. h. Never really did anything other than yank
on the wires, which led me to suspect a loose ground or something was
creating some weird path for the battery to drain and cause the buzzing
and all.

Re: [MBZ] 1987 300SDL Driveshaft

2011-03-28 Thread Ralph Robertson
An update to my long story: I have a vibration at certain speeds in my '87
300SDL. The vehicle is in super condition, with about 130K miles. This is
what I have done thus far:
replace transmission output shaft bearing and seal.
replace drive shaft center carrier bearing.
replace both front and rear drive shaft flex discs.
replace differential mount.
remove and switch rear axles from left to right.
Had motor mounts and trans. mounts checked, but not replaced. Apparently
they are all still good.
Had the drive shaft removed, checked out and balanced at a specialty shop in
Atlanta, Ga. It was out of balance slightly, and they added a weight to
correct this.
The vibration still is noticeable when under acceleration at about 25-30
MPH, then smooths out. At about 45-50 it returns until about 58 MPH, then
again smooths out and is not noticeable. At about 70-75mph, I can feel it
again returning slightly. After having all the above done, the vibration is
somewhat reduced and I assume the new rubbers are dampening the issue.
The strange thing is the weather seems to have an effect. When the temp. is
around 55F., I can feel this issue, but if it is above say 70 degrees F, it
is practically unnoticeable, except for the higher speed vibration.
Except for replacing all the mounts, I am at a standstill! Any ideas?

I use the low-concentration spray religiously any time I have to
detach an electrical connector from its mate and put it back together,
even the kind often found on late-model cars where the terminals are
protected from the elements by a tight-fitting housing with a little

cleaning the RCA jacks on used audio and video equipment. One swipe

[MBZ] Slower '91 300D 2.5T

2011-03-28 Thread Larry T

Hi Gang -

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about Reverse slipping severely - something which
started overnight.  I spoke with several technician including a MB technician
and of course, the brain trust here.  All said a new/rebuilt AT was needed.

Got the rebuilt transmission from Rusty  had a shop install it for me.  The MB
dealer was too pricey but were willing to install a rebuilt AT from a non-MB
rebuilder - kind of surprised me when they said, Sure. Course they
wanted $1050. ;-)

My shop did it for $650 plus fluid.  He did the RR overnight which I thought
was pretty fast.

Anyway, I am writing l ooki ng for  help with an unrelated (I think) problem.

After I lost reverse and knew a new AT was needed, we kept driving it as we
wait ed for the AT to arrive.  The forward gears began to slip and it felt like
the turbo was not putting out the power as usual.  I thought it was related to
the transmission and would get better when the AT was replaced.

It ran poorly and shifted poorly after I picked it up and I quickly found a
disconnected vacuum line and fixed it.  It is much better than it was and
shifts smoothly as it should. But when driving at a steady speed of sa y,
45mph, and I attempt to speedup, it feels like the turbo isn't working at all -
it very slowly builds speed.  If I use the Kick-down, it accelerates better,
but I didn' t need do that before all the trouble started..

If I put the pedal on the floor and leave it there it shifts at ~4300rpm as it
should and feels relatively fast, but the power when cruising feels very low.

I know the turbo must spool upbefore it produces significant  HP but before all
this happened with the AT, it accelerated much better.  I have searched for
more vacuum connections lose and bad hoses, even the accelerator linkage - and
all looks in order.  Also checked the air filter and changed the pre-fuel
filter.  I haven't changed the primary filter in about a year/12,000 miles but
I don't think it's time for that

The things I have NO clue how to check are all of the black boxes that control
the various systems.  No idea where to start.   Could a bad ALARA (is that
right) cause this?

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Indiana is actually in better financial shape than its neighbors, particularly
IL and WI. Especially IL. Bloomington in particular is faring better than
much of the nation, our recently announced county unemployment rate was 6.6%.

A couple of big construction projects here are University projects, ultimately
public dollars, though the University has done a good job managing its finances
despite state funding cuts and its bond rating has actually improved. They are
taking advantage of currently low construction costs to make infrastructure
improvements.

There is also brisk activity in apartment/condo construction. Several major
new high-rise (which here means ~10 stories) complexes have been recently built
and more are underway. I have no idea who rents these (probably students with
mom and dad's money) but they are going up all over the downtown area. The
city is trying to encourage compact urban development so they are approving
those types of development more than they are new development on the fringes,
which they term sprawl.

~100psi air.  Reassemble and test drive.  In most cases that takes

I picked up my '91 300D today following installation of a rebuilt AT

Rusty says he has sold thousands of these ATs with only 3 problems -
2 were installer problems and one was fixed easily. Which gives me
confidence in the AT.

It shifts a little on the firm side but I suspect that's to be
expected since it's new and will become more fluid as it is broken

experience in - breaking in a new AT. Suggestions ?

Also, the engine doesn't seem as peppy as it was - like maybe the
Turbo isn't spooling up properly . Are there any specific problems
that might cause this? It started doing this before the AT died all
the way - Tomorrow I'll check filters and vacuum hoses ... initially
I thought because the tranny was slipping that that caused the slow
feeling but that's no longer the case.

And I'm not sure if it's me or the control logic - but it seems to
want to shift too quickly - but not all of the time .. Is this
because the AT is new? Or does something need adjusting? Also, Is
the vaccuum modulator adjustable?

One more thing - the switch that telecopes the steering column only
clicks in the rearward direction - it will not move the column at
all forward. Does that sound like the switch? Wiring? Motor?

Thanks to all -

I have to agree with Peter, used Filter Queen from eBay or Craigslist is a good
buy. Several years ago, a Filter Queen rep talked my wife into a demo of the
unit and we both had to be there and if we demoed the unit then some crystal
doodad that my wife wanted was free to us. It was an impressive unit and
sucked lag bolts from the ground to over my head to the canister. All in all,
one of the quietest vacuum cleaners that I have ever used and it has a good
pickup and did a good job with the cat fur that is everywhere.

The total price was something like $2000 after being financed for 3 years and
interest charges tacked on. We politely thanked the rep and walked her to her
car and then started shopping eBay and was able to find a complete set with
some Filter Queen air purifiers thrown in for around $500. It was the best
vaccum cleaner that my wife and I have owned and when it dies, back to ebay for
another one.

I just paid $500 for a used Filter Queen.

Less than $500 and you want new, go to Sears, but you won't be much under that
$500 even there (base models only).

In spite of no official inflation, prices on manufactured (read
Chinese) goods are VERY high in comparison with what most people make.

[MBZ] OT - Firebird

2011-03-28 Thread Randy Bennell
We had our World of Wheels, car show at the convention center this past
weekend. Lots of odd ball show cars, a dozen big block Camaros etc. Not
as interesting as it sometimes is but I went with 3 other car guys and
quite enjoyed myself.

One display was of a very nice old Firebird - 1967 or 68 probably - with
the over head cam inline 6. Pretty much perfect. A labour of love. 5
years of work by a fellow who had enough garage to mount it on a
rotisserie (sp?) and do it right.

The really interesting thing was a couple of photos of the car when he
got it. It is hard to describe. I wish I had the forethought to pull out
my cell phone with camera and take a photo of the photo.

It had been in an accident and the front end was damaged. The owner,
then chose to modify it big time. It ended up with old style fenders and
hood and an oval grill out of some 1930's or 40's truck.

It was about the wierdest thing you have ever seen.

I told the fellow that I thought it a real shame that he had put it back
the way it started. It was quite the show car in it's altered state.

If you look long and hard you might come up with it. It was apparently
in a magazine - Carcraft or something similar - many years ago when they
did a feature on the 10 ugliest cars ever.

Sounds like the 1965 Mustang that my dad wouldn't let my brother buy.

He traded it in on a demo Vega GT hatchback when he got out of high school. He

The only way to make money, is if I had welded it back together with period
correct microwave oven parts, and those weren't easy to come by in the late
70s early 80s. She wanted $1500 for it, while it was still one piece.

I paid near $1000, or just a bit over for the first microwave oven I bought
for my Mum not too many years after that. I'm sure the car has been turned
into soup tins many times over, but my Mum still has that microwave oven.
In hindsight, I was probably wise to put the money into the oven rather than

[MBZ] 240D out of fuel - the end of the story

2011-03-28 Thread Curt Raymond
You may remember last week when my wife ran my 240D basically out of fuel. She
went to the store and got 4 quarts of 5w20, put 'em in the tank and got to
refuel and was on her way.

Saturday I replaced the filters, NASTY. The small see through one looked like
it had tadpoles in it. When I drained the canister one into a bucket I found
little dots of strained tadpole bodies... Glad that stuff didn't get into the
engine.
New filters and the acceleration is back to gradual instead of glacial.

slip and it felt like the turbo was not putting out the power as
usual. I thought it was related to the transmission and would get
better when the AT was replaced.

It ran poorly and shifted poorly after I picked it up and I quickly
found a disconnected vacuum line and fixed it. It is much better
than it was and shifts smoothly as it should. But when driving at a
steady speed of sa y, 45mph, and I attempt to speedup, it feels like
the turbo isn't working at all - it very slowly builds speed. If I
use the Kick-down, it accelerates better, but I didn' t need do that
before all the trouble started..

If I put the pedal on the floor and leave it there it shifts at
~4300rpm as it should and feels relatively fast, but the power
when cruising feels very low.

I know the turbo must spool upbefore it produces significant HP but
before all this happened with the AT, it accelerated much better. I
have searched for more vacuum connections lose and bad hoses, even
the accelerator linkage - and all looks in order. Also checked the
air filter and changed the pre-fuel filter. I haven't changed the
primary filter in about a year/12,000 miles but I don't think it's
time for that

The things I have NO clue how to check are all of the black boxes
that control the various systems. No idea where to start. Could a
bad ALARA (is that right) cause this?

Any ideas?

Thanks!

The only help I can offer is that to say this is a strange one

replace transmission output shaft bearing and seal.
replace drive shaft center carrier bearing.
replace both front and rear drive shaft flex discs.
replace differential mount.
remove and switch rear axles from left to right.
Any ideas?

It is the driver's fender in the USA and the non brit world. That is
the left side of the car, but it is the right side if you stand in
front of the car and look at the car. It is the same side the intake
manifold is on. Not the air cleaner. I am assuming a 2.5 is laid
out the same as the OM603. The line runs from the intake manifold to
the gizmo on the left fender. Blow out the line, and the nipple in
the manifold.

Howdy - You said left inner fender surely you mean RIGHT inner
fender?I eplaced the rubber hose that runs from the connector to
the vacuum do-hicky directly above the Turbo (about waist high) - I
hope that's the one you're talking about? . Should I do anything
to that thing? Also, another vac hose runs to a thing after of the

Take loose the line from the intake manifold to the left inner

~100psi air. Reassemble and test drive. In most cases that takes
care of the sluggish problem.

Howdy Gang -
I picked up my '91 300D today following installation of a rebuilt AT
I bought from Rusty. So far it is a huge improvement - of course,
going from not havong reverse and some forward gears will do that ;-^

Rusty says he has sold thousands of these ATs with only 3 problems -
2 were installer problems and one was fixed easily. Which gives me
confidence in the AT.

It shifts a little on the firm side but I suspect that's to be
expected since it's new and will become more fluid as it is broken
in ((fingers crossed). This is one area I have little to no
experience in - breaking in a new AT.

Re: [MBZ] why MB?

2011-03-28 Thread Curt Raymond
I drive too much to have a nice car and you can't get much Honda for $1500
while you can still get a pretty decent 240D. A $1500 Honda will be a horrible
ride, a 240D while pokey will at least be comfortable.

My '84 190D has about $4000 in it right now and today just passed 5000 miles
under my ownership. I figure to put at least 100,000 on it. I did 90,000 on my
last one but it had more miles when I started.

In the end my cost per mile is pretty low.

Because I have been a Mercedes owner for decades and I honestly believe
that all in all, despite all their past problems, that they are better than the
rest. I like the way they feel on the move. I like the build quality even
though my earlier cars had plenty of trouble during their early lives before
half the moving parts were replaced. I am a car hobbyist and no Asian label
car has ever interested me enough to buy one.

Further, it took me a long time to train my dealer which makes life easier

BTW, a B-Class is not a car but a baby minivan.

Now, what's your excuse?

[MBZ] 190D fuel cap

2011-03-28 Thread Curt Raymond
I've been noticing that my '84 190D doesn't do anything all that exciting in
the fuel mileage department, 34mpg is pretty normal. This concerned me as my
'85 did more like 38. I'd just about passed it off as auto vs manual (the auto
really wants overdrive) but tonight while filling up I realized the side of the
car was wet with fuel. Spent a minute fiddling with the cap and realized it
didn't really click into place like my other cars do. Its also smaller than the
cap on my other cars. In fact I think its an oil cap... I'd always wondered if
the caps were the same size.

I got home and swapped the cap with the one on my '83 240D which is bigger in
the part you grip. This cap clicks into place and didn't leak on the 240D back
when I was driving it. In fact one time when the tank vent plugged I had a heck
of a time getting it off.

We'll see...

Re: [MBZ] 1987 300SDL Driveshaft

2011-03-28 Thread Peter Frederick
This sort of vibration can be tires, wheel bearings, diff mounts (you
replaced that) subframe mounts, or a bad half shaft. Check the axles
for rotational play (that is, click-click while rotating back and forth.

You should also check for excessive wear in the spider pinion --
there should be very little backlash while turning a rear wheel
before the other one moves, along with the pinion (driveshaft). If
one wheel can be move a significant amount independent of the others,
the diff is worn out. Will clank sometimes, and can vibrate. My
220D was shot, and I think the new 300D is going to get a
transplant soon, as it's bad as well.

Weak shocks can permit wheel tramp a resonant speeds, so check those,
and make sure the sway bar bushings in the rear and the links are all
good, they allow the sway bar to vibrate if they are bad.

Good luck!

2011-03-28 Thread OK Don
What he said - but it's a pressure line, not vacuum. there are little clamps
on it. You also need to clean out the fittings the hose attaches to, not
only the hose. As Dieselhead said, it's the side opposite of the turbo. It
measures the pressure in the intake manifold that is created by the turbo
and sends it to the control mechanisms. I think I just repeated what he said
- oh well.

It is the driver's fender in the USA and the non brit world. That is the

Not the air cleaner. I am assuming a 2.5 is laid out the same as the
OM603. The line runs from the intake manifold to the gizmo on the left
fender. Blow out the line, and the nipple in the manifold.

Howdy - You said left inner fender surely you mean RIGHT inner fender?
I eplaced the rubber hose that runs from the connector to the vacuum
do-hicky directly above the Turbo (about waist high) - I hope that's the one
you're talking about? . Should I do anything to that thing? Also, another
vac hose runs to a thing after of the turbo but up about waist high.
Should I do anything to that?

You are measuring net charge. If the GP's (for example) were sucking
hard on the alternator there would be little left for charging, except
they draw less current as they heat up, so it might appear to be a
slowly-increasing charge followed by a jump as the GP relay shut off.

Re: [MBZ] 1987 300SDL Driveshaft

This sounds very similar to the vibration I had in the '87 300SDL that I
traded to Kaleb a while back -- I didnt' do all that you did, but I never
could figure out what it was. My Indie at the time (may he rest in peace)
put it up on the rack, had his wife run it up through the vibration range
(65 MPH, IIRC), and couldn't find the source, though he could reproduce it.

 is
what I have done thus far:
replace transmission output shaft bearing and seal.
replace drive shaft center carrier bearing.
replace both front and rear drive shaft flex discs.
 replace differential mount.
remove and switch rear axles from left to right.
Had motor mounts and trans. mounts checked, but not replaced. Apparently
 they are all still good.
Had the drive shaft removed, checked out and balanced at a specialty shop
 in
Atlanta, Ga.
After having all the above done, the vibration
 is
somewhat reduced and I assume the new rubbers are dampening the issue.
The strange thing is the weather seems to have an effect. When the temp.
 is
around 55F., I can feel this issue, but if it is above say 70 degrees F,
 it
is practically unnoticeable, except for the higher speed vibration.
Except for replacing all the mounts, I am at a standstill! Any ideas?

Re: [MBZ] Slower '91 300D 2.5T

2011-03-28 Thread Jim Cathey
it feels like the turbo isn't working at all - it very slowly builds
speed.  If I use the Kick-down, it accelerates better, but I didn' t
need do that before all the trouble started.

If the Boost signal from the manifold to the injection pump
is not making it, either in full or partially, then you will
not get all the fueling you are entitled to and the acceleration
will be weak. What is the stall speed of your (new?) torque
converter? Get the car warmed up, stand on the brakes, and
floor it. Note the engine RPM. Get back to us.

2011-03-28 Thread Jim Cathey
Had the drive shaft removed, checked out and balanced at a specialty
shop in
Atlanta, Ga. It was out of balance slightly, and they added a weight
to

correct this.

Just how familiar are they with 2-piece MB driveshafts?
My money's still on that, especially if you are familiar
with the different feel of the roughly 3x vibration frequency
of drivelines versus anything else. Could the driveline have
been mis-phased when it was reinstalled? About 27 wrong ways
to line the two pieces up, one right way. See:

Re: [MBZ] Battery drain - was: Ammeter installation wire size

2011-03-28 Thread OK Don
Yes - I am measuring net charge - the meter is pegged on the minus side when
glowing and cranking, then goes to about -15 amps, slowly heading to 0, then
jumps to 20 or so on the plus side.
I was wondering if that might be the case - I need to sit still long enough
to log this in 5 second increments or so, and log the ambient temp to see if
there is a correlation. Perhaps at some temps the GPR does that after
starting glow thing, and at others it just turns off abruptly.

2011-03-28 Thread Dieselhead
I chased this on my first SDL also. One thing that helped: after I
changed the carrier and the rubber mount again, I noticed the new
rubber mount for the carrier is not as thick or stiff as the older
ones. THis allowed the carrier bearing to sag at rest, and to float
around while running. A definite source of vibration. I cleaned the
rubber good with brake cleaner, then took blue permatex and built up
the mount below the bearing, with the driveshaft wired in as near
centered as I could make it. This helped.

I have suspected that the new carrier bearing mount is not stiff
enough to do the job, but never could prove it, since I don't have an
old rubber mount to compare to.

As Jim said, if any fool takes the driveshaft apart, there are 20
some wrong ways to put it back together, and only one right way.
Even when you try to mark the halves, it is hard to get them aligned
right.

This sort of vibration can be tires, wheel bearings, diff mounts
(you replaced that) subframe mounts, or a bad half shaft. Check the
axles for rotational play (that is, click-click while rotating back
and forth.

You should also check for excessive wear in the spider pinion --
there should be very little backlash while turning a rear wheel
before the other one moves, along with the pinion (driveshaft). If
one wheel can be move a significant amount independent of the
others, the diff is worn out. Will clank sometimes, and can
vibrate. My 220D was shot, and I think the new 300D is going to
get a transplant soon, as it's bad as well.

Weak shocks can permit wheel tramp a resonant speeds, so check
those, and make sure the sway bar bushings in the rear and the links
are all good, they allow the sway bar to vibrate if they are bad.

Good luck!

Peter
