I looked over the pictures I took of the process and finally figured out what I did back in 2007: I replaced the ignition lock housing, which includes the ignition switch and the mechanism to turn the ignition switch. The housing is shown at http://www.buymbparts.biz/item.wws?sku=W0133-1605516itempk=14591mfr=Valeoweight=1.65 and has the note, Does not contain lock cylinder (tumbler) : does include ignition switch 202 545 01 04. It costs $195.13. The procedure is to take the housing and ignition switch out, take the switch off the housing, and see what's broken. In my case, the tangs that turn the switch were broken off the mechanism in the housing, so I had to buy the housing. [MBZ] suddenly, no shifting, 1983 300D
Driving into town today, everything seemed normal. Then went through a stretch of road work, stop and go for 15 minutes or so. Then at the next stoplight, when I started off the car would not shift out of 1st gear (or do these start in 2nd?). Anyway, no shifting in forward gears. Reverse works OK. [MBZ] W116 water under drivers seat
Opened up the 300SD today to air it out. We've had what's seemed like a month of continuous rain and finally today is warm and sunny. I've had it under a tarp (one of those blue poly woven ones) through all the rain, because when I got it it had water on the floor so I knew something was leaking. The tarp should have stopped most/all of the water from getting in, I would have thought. But there was a pool of water UNDER the driver's seat. No sign of leakage or moisture anywhere else. What sort of a leak would pool up there without getting anything else wet? Re: [MBZ] W208 CLK
...Anybody want to weigh in on the merits or faults of the w208?.. Yes, Mitch, I do know about them. But before I go farther, I'll wait a bit until all the posts recommending 123s and 126s subside a bit Whitenoisewhitenoisewhitenoise... Now that that's over, here's what I know. My friend JB bought a '99 CLK 430 V-8 new. It's a metallic red one with a sort of grey interior and I don't remember whether it's leather or not. He comes to my house every 5K miles to change the M1 0W40 with my Topsider. The car recently passed 100K miles and it has had very little trouble during that time aside from a few minor items, the last of which was as idler pulley of some sort. There is still no oil consumption. It is on it's 3rd set of tires, 17 inchers on staggered AMG wheels. Highway fuel consumption is in the mid-20s. I drove the car from Seattle to Portland when it was new and found it to be a bit noisier than my '95 C280 and the ride was bit stiffer which I attributed to the AMG influence. The V-8 exhaust sound is very nice, mostly outside. The CLK 320 uses the 3-valve V-6, twin plugs with a single cam per bank without variable valve timing and was used in other models including the W203 C320 and the ML320 since 1997. These engines, provided that Mobil 1 (10K changes with fleece filter) is used have been pretty reliable. They don't leak oil and don't blow headgaskets like some past designs we are familiar with. The CLK 320 rides on 16 inch rather unatttractive wheels, not staggered. Fuel consumption around town will be around 20-21 and best highway might reach 28mpg. Premium. Both models have a 5-speed automatic with neither a manual trans or a diesel engine available. The CLK is not cursed with the nightmarish electronic faults of the early W203 since the early W208 was based on the W202 which, looking back, turned out to be a pretty good car providing it wasn't one of the 4-cylinder models. I suggest consulting Wikipedia for more info.
