Pretty sure this is because of some whacko EPA rule that says you cannot replace R12 with anything but R134a, but it's OK to replace R134a with one of the "alternative" refrigerants. So to be strictly legal, you first have to "convert" to R134a then convert again to the alternative. A more legitimate reason may be that if the system still has the R12-style service valves but is actually charged with something else you could end up contaminating the R12 recovery machine if it's ever serviced later at a shop. But you're also supposed to clearly mark any AC system that's been converted to any non-OE refrigerant. -- 1983 300D ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Some adapters screw over the original fitting, some require removing the valve and have one in the adapter (MB comversion fittings are the second type, I've ruined a couple schreader vavles putting them on). They are usually glued down with blue permatex -- if they don't unscrew easily, just heat them with a propane torch and soften up the adhesive. Re: [MBZ] Rotella in OM-617
Back when I was consistently doing 30k/yr with my '85 190D it was doing about 1qt/6,000 miles on 12k changes with M1 5w40. I haven't driven the '84 190D enough yet to really know as I'm only just closing in on the first 10k. Looks like a qt/3k right now but improving, its only had M1 for about 6,000 miles. Interestingly my '78 240D might be the least leaky/consuming 616 I've yet had. I had to add this week but I think thats around 2,500 miles since the last time and when I was driving it to work full time 2 weeks ago I was driving it HARD to burn out the carbon. Hard driving on a 240D tends to consume some oil. -Curt Date: Wed, 8 Jun 2011 13:53:06 -0400 From: John Reames To: Mercedes Discussion List Cc: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] Rotella in OM-617 Message-ID: <886242e3-5506-4cfa-8a93-d477bd333...@comcast.net> Content-Type: text/plain;charset=us-ascii I find that only one quart per change is needed (if that!), even when I drove 40k miles in 9 mos (oil changes were due at approximately 18kmi intervals) Now if the thing didn't have the snappy glow plugs! -- John W Reames jream...@verizon.net Home: +14106646986 Mobile: +14437915905 On Jun 5, 2011, at 12:15, "Max Dillon" wrote: > You are correct, when the low oil light started blinking, I added half a > quart, which was actually at 5500 miles, so roughly 1 qt per 11,000 miles. > > It's my first fill of M1 in this engine, so it may get better, but I'm happy > with current consumption. > > -Max ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Hope you're back on the road soon. Spent the moring out in a friends Boxster, in very hot and humid weather. The old SC seems to be running well, but needs a few small trim bits installed. Ester oil is failry benign stuff. Worst case, it eventually works its way out of the compressor and puddles in the condenser, reducing the system's ability to get rid of heat. PAG oil, on the other hand, has nasty reaction by-products when exposed to water and R12. For that reason, I don't think PAG is ever used in R134 conversions. Re: [MBZ] AC & Freeze 12
The Mamabenz (300SD) has been converted to 134, these last coupla weeks it has been getting less and less coolie, was fine when we got it 2.5 yr ago. I put a can of 134 into it the other night and it was BLOWING ICE COLD in 85+F temp. So I don't know about performance issues, it seems to be OK. The boy brought his SD here over Mem Day and is leaving it, it had R12 in it and was working OK when we got it 4 years ago, but it has leaked down and does not cool. I was thinking to put one of these alternatives in it and see if I can get it to BLOW ICE COLD, but was also thinking I should replace the seals and such -- so does anyone know where to get a set and where to put them on the system? --R On 6/8/11 1:22 PM, Dieselhead wrote: Take it back to r12/freeze 12 or the Cathey test blend. Since I had my '84 300D converted to R134a many moons ago when there was indication that R12 would no longer be available, the AC in this car has never been really good on hot days even when the R134a has been topped up. Cathey's troubleshooting guide. The ACC system in my 300D does not have air blowing through the center dash vents when the AC is on and I get maximum heat no matter where the temperature wheel is set, whereas the ACC system in the 300TD seems to operate fine so I hope I get some clue as to the cause of the maladies with the ACC in the 300D. Re: [MBZ] AC & Freeze 12
Take it back to r12/freeze 12 or the Cathey test blend. An MB r12 system is marginal at best. When converted to 134, it is good to only about 85 F and worse than running with the windows down at temps over 90 when you really need it. Since I had my '84 300D converted to R134a many moons ago when there was indication that R12 would no longer be available, the AC in this car has never been really good on hot days even when the R134a has been topped up. The '85 300TD I purchased from my brother this past year had never been converted from R12 and hadn't had a recharge in many years, so I had a Freeze 12 charge with fresh oil added. Since the Freeze 12 in the 300TD seems to cool things down a lot better than the R134a in the 300D (Note: returning from a visit about 15-18 mi. during an afternoon when the outside temp. was ~86-88F and humid, I ended up turning the temp. wheel off MIN and the fan setting to low; it reminded me of a GM car) I'm considering switching from the R134a to Freeze 12 in the 300D after I do some troubleshooting/comparing of the performance of the ACC system as per J. [MBZ] FLAPS was: Rotella in OM-617
Around here it is Arnolds, a small regional chain, then oreally? then NAPA (who used to be really good, but now they ignore the counter trade to concentrate on the shop trade) then carquest (who used to be Jockos and were really good), then Advance. Autozone was so bad they folded up several years ago. Always entertaining when a walton has to fold up. It was also interesting to watch the walton-walton battle of oreally driving out autozone. Car Quest is very good in some places, but not here. Arnolds and NAPA have almost all the shop trade, including the stealer-dealers, who claim to only use OE parts... (Charge for a GM new starter, put in a reman.) Interesting. Our Car Quest guys are totally top notch. The Autozone guys are hit or miss but generally if they're a miss they won't last long but they ALWAYS show up at Advance later on. I'll only buy stuff at Advance if I have to, like when I needed calipers in a hurry and Advance was the only place that could get them for Sunday delivery. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
