Re: [MBZ] rear springs 126 - '87 300SDL
I think replacing all the rubber parts is the way to go, especially with the age of this unit. Thanks. Ralph On Tue, Jun 28, 2011 at 12:05 AM, Dieselhead 126die...@gmail.com wrote: IF the rear camber and toe in are ok without load, (and you are using the proper Bilstein shocks) then you can probably contact Air LIft for some air bags. Before you do that, you probably should inspect the upper and lower rubber spring pads and take the springs out and measure them. The rubber spring pads are most certainly worn. There are many rubber components in the rear subframe assembly. The only way to improve things that is not haphazard is to replace everything rubber. Subframe mounts, LCA bushings, Diff mounts, spring pads. From your description, I would guess the main problem is the spring pads and maybe subframe mounts. 30 odd years ago, I put air lift bags in the rear springs of my 200D. They work well, but take some work to install. BTW, they still hold air, but are shot. There is no difference in the wear pattern on the rear tires. Are these rubber bushings a part of the spring setup? I will get these eccentric bushings from Rusty and try it. Sounds like it should be a simpler job than replacing the springs. I had thought that adding air bags would be the answer, but had not heard anyone ever mention putting these on mercedes. Thanks. Ralph On Mon, Jun 27, 2011 at 8:59 AM, Dieselhead 126die...@gmail.com wrote: Replace the rubber bushings in the rear. Makes a world of difference. I doubt buying new springs will make any difference. Rusty also has some eccentric bushings that will help correct this. Do you have more wear on the inside of the rear tires? I suspect that the rear springs on my '87 300 SDL are weak as the car sags considerably when passengers are in the back seat. I replaced the rear shocks, but that did not correct this. Are there any other options other than replacing these springs? Thanks. Years ago when I was learning to fly, I was doing touch and gos with my instructor. There was an air guard base at the airport, those guys would go up ripping around in their F-100s, shooting approaches or whatever they did. Me: 39 November at 1600 downwind for touch and go on 22 Tower: 39 November clear to land on 22. Military xxx your traffic is 12 o'clock and one mile at 1400, you'll pass 200 feet over. About 2 seconds. Instructor and I both grab the throttle and yank it back and shove the yoke forward. We hear and see an F-100 pass immediately above us, MAYBE 200 ft above, probably less. We get the airplane organized and look at each other and say at exactly the same time, OH SH**! Instructor: Tower 39 November downwind for 22 we almost scraped some paint there A few seconds go by... Tower: 39 November please make full stop landing and contact the tower as you taxi in I heard something unintelligible from one of the jet jockeys, it might have been some sort of expletive. So I land and we go by the terminal/tower and I drop off my instructor and taxi on over to the FBO, get the plane organized. I go inside and everyone in there is like, You need to change your pants? The instructor shows up a few minutes later, still shaking and really angry. He reamed the controller fiercely. I don' think there was ever anything official done, but things tightened up a bit at the airport after that. And the jet jockeys did their practicing somewhere else for awhile after that. The air commander or whatever he was called over later and apologized to the instructor, though it really wasn't his guy's fault. The incident involved a loaded Egyptair Boeing 777-300 fueled for Cairo and a Munich-bound Lufthansa Airbus A340-600 with 286 on board. When the Egyptair jet missed its turn, the two jets were rolling toward each other on the active runway as the Lufthansa accelerated for takeoff. Audio of the event includes comments from pilots of nearby aircraft. They include, Yeah. That was quite a show ... thought it was going to be a short career. The German jet was on the runway accelerating for takeoff when the Egyptian crew missed their taxiway and turned onto the runway ahead of the German airliner. Controllers immediately told the Lufthansa Airbus to cancel the takeoff, which called on the jet's pilots to stop the jet, and its 10 hours of fuel, as quickly as possible. Controllers explain by saying, There's a ... as you see what's going on. No need to speak about it on frequency. The jet did successfully stop, and another voice on frequency is heard saying, ... those two were comin' together. Once secure, the Lufthansa pilots expressed concern that maybe we have hot brakes now, so, maybe we take a minute... . The German plane was allowed to taxi off the runway at its discretion. Its brakes were inspected to determine if they had overheated or suffered other damage and the aircraft departed an hour and a half later. The Egyptair jet, which had been taxiing for departure when it missed its turn, was released about an hour after the event. Controllers asked the crew to call to report a possible pilot deviation upon landing in Cairo, and provided a phone number. Re: [MBZ] Shades of KLM @ Tenerife
There are moments in aviation that you never forget. On my Instrument check ride with FAA Check Pilot on board and running the show I was under the hood shooting an IFR approach to minimums. The FAA Check Pilot instructed me to shoot a downwind approach and cleared it with the tower. At the very last moment the FAA Check Pilot ripped the hood off, grabbed the throttles and yoke and at 100 ft altitude did a 90 degree full power bank into the tower missing it by a few feet. As the dust settled, I noted the arriving airliner touching down, having just missed a head on with us by seconds. Lovely day !!! Somehow I passed that check ride and spent the next 3 days filling out FAA incident forms, bonding with FAA agents and just having all kinds of fun. We're from the FAA and we are not having fun until you are not having fun Grant... Left rear quarter panel, tailgate and grill has a dent. No glove box door ( I have a spare). The good: the rest of the body is rust free, third row of seats, new rear heated glass, self leveling rear works, trailer hitch. Has been my daily diver for four years and the transmission just quit. Thats another one of those where I'd want to know more about the specific problem, maybe a tranny service with a new filter and M1 would clean it up... With a used trans in the mix it might not be a bad deal. Interestingly my '81 wagon had the same hole in the floor of the rear passenger side. Mine was a rust bucket though. If I had more time I'd offer $700 on this. -Curt Date: Tue, 28 Jun 2011 16:58:39 -0400 From: Fred Moir fred.s...@verizon.net To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: [MBZ] Fwd: Mercedes 300TD diesel - $1000 (Brighton) Message-ID: 4e0a407f.9000...@verizon.net Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Curt? et al. No rocker arms here, hydraulic compensators. Cams on the camshaft push directly on the hydraulic compensators (aka lifters). Do I need to keep the lifters with their head, and in the original hole? I'm not planning on doing that. Linksys wusb600n or the new Linksys USB one. Available at Sam's Club, Wal-Mart, or cheaper refurbished from Amazon. Download the driver from ralink. Works in at least rhel, centos, fedora. I'm using 128 of them right now. If you have a cardbus slot you will probably already have the driver for anything you pick up, but you will have to find a cardbus NIC first. Still, an alternative. I have researched a lot of drivers, so if you can't find a driver let me know. For what it's worth the 11n USB NICs are more likely compatible with Linux. -Tim On Jun 28, 2011 7:04 PM, diese...@pisquared.net diese...@pisquared.net wrote: Well, we made it out and are now at the Glorieta Conference Center east of Santa Fe. Re: [MBZ] 17 OM603 head vs camshaft, injectors
You can try looking on the EPC to see when they changed cams, but I'd run the later one if the rust isn't too bad. Try polishing it off - can you get it smooth? Is it on the peak or the back side of the lobe? Worst case is that you'll wear out lifters - so keep some from the old head as spares. The bad: Bad transmission, engine smokes on start out but starts even in the dead of winter and runs fine, one small spot of rust on passenger rocker panel and rear passenger floor pan needs patching. Left rear quarter panel, tailgate and grill has a dent. No glove box door ( I have a spare). [MBZ] Post Mortem of Ign Switch RR
I looked carefully at my old ign switch and found the part seen from the drivers seat had separated completely from the half hidden behind the dash! Luckily it never jammed so the key would not turn! The reason I replaced it was because the key was difficult to turn but never took more than 1 or 2 semi-forceful twists. My wife had trouble turning it but my son and I always just turned it even though there was a definite “catch” where it was hard to turn. The lesson here is to replace it at the 1st sign of trouble. I was gonna post it on CL for $1k, see if I get any bites. --R ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] Post Mortem of Ign Switch RR
Yes, indeed, or it could cost $700 to $800 to cut it out if the key will not turn that one last time to position 1 for the easy 30-second replacement. Wilton - Original Message - From: Larry l02tur...@comcast.net To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Tuesday, June 28, 2011 11:09 PM Subject: [MBZ] Post Mortem of Ign Switch RR I looked carefully at my old ign switch and found the part seen from the drivers seat had separated completely from the half hidden behind the dash! [MBZ] OT: Hanging Doors
I am looking for advice or a good tutorial on how to replace existing doors in the house. I plan to replace all 10 of the interior doors, and I will need a template for the router to cut for the hinges and the lock set recess on the opposite edge of the door. I already have all I need for installing the new locks. I will be using the existing cutouts on the door jambs.I would be looking for any time and labor saving devices. Thanks in advance. Re: [MBZ] OT: Hanging Doors
I've replaced/hung from scratch and framed out many door openings. I'm kind of old fashioned in my techniques so I just chisel everything out. As far as knowing where to place the hinge on the door, I put the door in the opening, shim the bottom so all spaces are perfect then I mark on the door the location of the hinge with respect to the existing hinge on the jamb. It works perfectly. Sent from my iPhone On Jun 28, 2011, at 11:49 PM, Jerry Herrman jer...@san.rr.com wrote: I am looking for advice or a good tutorial on how to replace existing doors in the house.
