[MBZ] Online EPC down?
Has anyone else not been able to get into the online EPC lately? After logging in I click the link that says Launch EPC-Net Online---then almost immediately I get a small box saying Unable to launch EPC and under that a window saying Requested http://epc-prod.startekinfo.com/EPC-net/servlets/epc.jar. Failed to load resource. I've deliberately not updated the version of Java on this machine since I started using the online EPC, because I know it's sensitive to that---wonder if they finally changed it so that now it requires a *newer* version of Java instead? I'm running XP SP3, if that gives anyone any ideas. (Other than that I should try doing this in Linux.) Re: [MBZ] MBCA car show...
Get a bigger hammer Roger and tell us what magic you used on the near new C class to impress people. The problem I see is that if it is anything like last year, there will be people parking their precious things near trees. The horror, imagine if a bird flew over a shiny car andno I can't say it, just the thought of it drives me to declare that any future car shows must be conducted indoors. You're best off not to post pictures of the show, we would be horrified to see MB cars outdoors. And don't forget Prokofiev. The third piano concerto is - for want of a better word - shocking. No transitions between themes, great vehicle for a virtuoso, terrific orchestration. Knocks me for a loop every time I hear it, and the ending takes your breath away. The William Kapell recording from the early 1950s is the gold standard for this piece. Re: [MBZ] Bearing kit and special tool? Now chaning a cv, shaft too...
Philip, If it helps on two different 300D's both 83's, I have measured from 5 to 6 lbs boost at 55-60mph. So if yours is doing that then I would think it is pretty much normal. The max boost I have measured on both is right at 9lbs so the 5-6lbs is not due to the bypass valve opening. BTW on one of these the turbo is rebuilt so everything should be in good condition and therefor normal as from the factory. I can't see any way to increase the boost at highway speeds other then to use a different turbo (smaller or larger?) that would turn at higher RPM to increase boost. Re: [MBZ] Bearing kit and special tool? Now chaning a cv, shaft too...
Proper boost is 11psi. Youd be surprised how much of a diff 2-3 psi makes. You might be able to increase cruising boost by using a manual boost controller. The waste gate will start opening as it approaches max psi, making for more of a curve, with the mbc you get a straight ride up and then a direct fall off. -Rolf On 07/29/2011 10:43 AM, MG wrote: Philip, If it helps on two different 300D's both 83's, I have measured from 5 to 6 lbs boost at 55-60mph. [MBZ] For Kaleb: Routes around NYC
Kaleb, Depending where you're coming from, (Maine?) You may want to hook up with I-84, shoot across CT into NY, across the hudson river and pick up the NYS Thruway to I-287, where you can get several westbound Interstates (I-80 and I-78). You can avoid the I-95 traffic headed to NYC, and the city itself, if you want to. Wanna go to the Jersey Shore, stay on I-287 and pick the the Garden State Parkway. Exit 100 is Ocean Grove (my favorite) and Asbury Park. Just south of there, you can pick up I-195 and head back to the Jersey Turnpike (I-95) towards Philly or wherever else you want to go. Just some suggestions. Drive Safely... Re: [MBZ] Philly
Hi Kaleb, My son went to college in Philly. There is a straight shot from Philly across southern Jersey to the Jersey shore, via the Atlantic City Expressway. If you are coming thru NYC, you would take the Garden State Parkway to the shore, rather than go to Philly and then head east. NYC traffic really depends on the day and time of travel. I-95 in southwestern CT can be a 20 mile + parking lot if you time it wrong. Don't even think about it during morning (7-9am) or evening (3-6 or even 7 on a Friday) rush hours. Other than that it isn't bad unless there is an accident that ties things up. On a good day I can make it straight thru the city and across the Hudson River in 90 minutes from here (about 115 miles). That is exceptional, however. And You-know-who wasn't riding shotgun. On the other hand, on a bad Holiday weekend, it has taken me 8 hours to get to NYC. I don't know what your travel time frame is but if you do go to the Jersey shore, you could continue south to Cape May, NJ, take the Cape May -Lewes, Del. ferry, drop down to Ocean City MD, and then come across the DelMarVa peninsula to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge at Annapolis, and then on to Washington, DC. Has the family ever seen Washington? The Chesapeake Bay Bridge at Annapolis is not for the faint of heart, btw. It is a thin ribbon in space, high and spectacular--- I love it but it scares the bejesus out of my wife. Let me know if your itinerary brings you through SE CT. I am very close to I-95, but I am headed to Maryland the first weekend in August for a big car show for a different German vehicle. Re: [MBZ] One music composer - was: GUMP is DEAD
In pure terms of innovation during a composer's time period, I would order (from greatest to least) them as such: Bach, Beethoven, Wagner, Mozart. I think greatness should be evaluated mostly on how much new technique they foster that makes an impact for many years to come. Mozart's mature works aren't as obviously mature as they follow the same harmonic structure and normal Classical era form rules. It's hard to put him last based on the amount of music he wrote, but it's all similar Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Mozart. Beethoven Wagner are similar that they expanded and created grand works of a genre. Beethoven combined the choir with the symphony more than once (Fantasia for Piano, Chorus, and Orchestra, Op. 80... 9th Symphony) and Wagner used leit-motif in his opera's that expanded to 4 5 hours. Both have definite differences between young works and mature works. Bach, IMHO, has not been surpassed in his counterpoint (many composers have tried since and NONE have equaled even Bach's modest works, let alone his greatest: The Art of the Fugue) and his chromatic harmony. Bach was alive during the transition from Meantone to Equal temperment and had the luxury of an organ in his early years that was tuned Equally, allowing him to explore chromatic harmony that many composers didn't touch for over 100 years. Study his 150 Cantatas (as I did this summer) and you will find many chromatic chord progressions that boggle the mind. He also wrote a fugue based on his own name, using the notes B-A-C-H (in modern terms B=B-flat H=B-natural) that are 4 neighboring half-steps. L, Master of Music in progress... ..Get a bigger hammer Roger and tell us what magic you used on the near new C class to impress people. What puzzles me is why these pictures make you so angry. Do they make you feel guilty because of the state of your vehicle? Although because of the poor quality of your posted photos, I couldn't be sure. Face it, a lot of people like to maintain their capital equipment which also can be a hobby. Now that I think about it, I doubt any of these machines are smoked in. This event is not a Concours but a social event with some minor awards. For example, there is a People's Choice award where all car owners and spectators vote by ballot on the car they liked best. At the 2009 show, the President told me later that my car was one vote short of winning that award (I never vote) which surprised me since it's always a Gullwing or similar that is chosen. It must be the color and the lack of dirt. I intend to post pictures of the 2011 show in two weeks but I'll forewarn you since I would hate to bring on one of your spells. Re: [MBZ] Bearing kit and special tool? Now chaning a cv shaft too...
Boost starts building at ~1800rpm, 1500rpm is where I am out of stall, ymmv on an automatic. More boost does mean you are burning more fuel automatically because of the ALDA on those cars equipped with them, the electronic IPs are a different beast altogether. Engine efficiency does not equal MPG as does optimal not equal minimal. I am pretty sure fuel is not increased on load as the bench tests dont involve load. Again on the mechanical IPs. If fuel did increase on load you would not have to move the pedal when you go up a hill. I could be totally wrong on this part, the OP mentioned that a heavy load ruined his axles, this is actually possible IMO, as it happened with me (atleast this is my theory). As your rear sags (in my case I lowered the car) the angle that the joints work at changes. Youve spent a hundred thousand miles at essentially one angle. Then bam, you've changed the angle, increased the load on the joint and the balls start tearing into new metal. Then the trip is over and suddenly you are back to the 100k wear mark but suddenly you have alot more area to move in. -Rolf On 07/29/2011 03:33 PM, Curt Raymond wrote: Why 1500rpm? The turbo isn't kicking in at 1500 rpm... More boost doesn't equal more fuel being burnt automatically, the load on the engine plays into that. I don't know HOW but it does. The turbo makes the engine more efficient not less, if you're not into the turbo you're not making optimal efficiency which is where optimal fuel economy will come in. An OM601 IIRC has its peak torque somewhere around 2500rpm so with my '85 190D I used to endevor to keep it there. With the 5spd that was somewhere around 62mph in 5th. In later testing I realized it didn't make a whole lot of difference to my fuel economy what the speed of the engine was, it was more on the speed of the CAR. The sweet spot still seemed to be around 62mph, slower than that and I went stir crazy, faster and the fuel gauge dropped faster than I like. -Curt Date: Fri, 29 Jul 2011 13:56:07 -0400 From: Rolfr...@winmutt.com To: mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] Bearing kit and special tool? -Curt ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Bearing kit and special tool? Now chaning a cv, shaft too...
Doesn't a manual boost controller just take the place of the waste gate? If so then I would still have just the 5-6 lbs at 55-60. The boost only goes higher then that when I really push the peddle down to accelerate fast and it will go up fast and then stop right at 9lbs. It doesn't matter if I am going 45 or 60 when I nail it the boost pops up and then stops at 9. When I let off to go to cruise the boost comes down just as fast to whatever the steady state pressure is for that speed. I can see where a manual boost controller will allow the boost to go higher at the top end but don't really see it increasing the boost at 5-6lbs. I don't think the spring is that weak that it would be letting exhaust by at that low a pressure, especially in the one that has just been rebuilt. From what I have read in a lot of different places 9lbs seems to be the most reported top pressure in unmodified turbos. I have been thinking of turning the spring adjustment to try and raise the top boost but haven't had the time to remove and dissect one of the turbos and do that. When I get to that I will let everyone know what I found out. Right now I just took time out to pull all the trim off the 300D and get the worst dents taken out and repainted. Looks quite nice but I wish I hadn't done it. Now I worry all the time about someone banging into it with their door. I've taken to parking farther away and walking a bit. May get over that in a while or I may just sell it so I don't have to worry about it any more. You might be able to increase cruising boost by using a manual boost controller. The waste gate will start opening as it approaches max psi, making for more of a curve, with the mbc you get a straight ride up and then a direct fall off. -Rolf ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
[MBZ] Composers
Luther wrote: n pure terms of innovation during a composer's time period, I would order (from greatest to least) them as such: Bach, Beethoven, Wagner, Mozart. Well said. Bach is certainly the most innovative and his genius is hard to argue with. 11 psi is the max for a 617, but 14 psi is normal for a 603. You will get a bit more power at 11 than at 9 on a 617, but you will get greatly accelerated engine wear above 11. Note that the intake pressure and fuel delivery are related but not by a fixed amount. The governor will reduce the fuel even at high pressure if the engine speed is correct, although if you are not at high load, this will also reduce the pressure, but not in a linear way. Re: [MBZ] MBCA show stopper
Well I guess I am not that much of a car nut, a bit of dirt on the family workhorse does not bother me, things not working does bother me. So what if my wheels are not shiny, if people want to judge me on the condition of my rims then I don't really want to know them. The pictures don't make me angry at all, if people get joy out of spending their weekend polishing a car then good luck to em, my weekends are taken up with maintenance (of 8+ pieces of equipment), home repair/improvements, doing the bookwork for the business, social events and spending time with the kids. Perhaps one day I will catch up with all the things I NEED to do and then I can do things that are superfluous, such as making the family truck wheels shiny. Yeah I suppose I need a better camera to impress people with the quality of my photos but there again I don't really care if they are not up to someone else's standard. I don't want to stereotype but I would think that most of the people who display their cars do not use them as everyday transport, don't let their kids (if they have any) anywhere near them and the local shopping center car park is a definite must avoid. If I had the time, money or space for a fancy model Merc then I would agree that I have somewhat of a responsibility to maintain that vehicle to a high standard but a common 300TE with crappy paint is not something I am going to get all weird about. Funny thing is that a 22 year old car can do the same job as a brand new car but I am not stressed if it gets another scratch, to add to the 100's it has acquired in it's 22 years of service and the thing is that if I maintain it, it may give another 22 years of service or until it is banned by the government. And Roger, if you're car was one vote short of winning, doesn't that mean it drew for 1st place? Although I do agree with you in the regard that a near new MB which has had a professional detail done, is not deserving to win a show, an old MB which was restored by the owner back to a concourse standard is deserving. I'll be sure to stock up on my medicine, which comes in cans or bottles, so I can view your quality pictures without dropping a valve. BTW there where some nice cars at the show and thank you for the close up shots of all those nice and clean wheels, almost makes me want to clean mine.almost, have to keep working on a couple of retaining walls, which will need cleaning once finished. You're best off not to post pictures of the show, we would be horrified to see MB cars outdoors. At a give RPM and a given fuel rack position on an engine with an ALDA adding boost will increase the fuel used. But that's not how most of us drive because we don't directly care what the power output is, we regulate the RPM against the load by changing the fuel used. With the turbo contributing generously, more heat energy from the fuel is turned into torque. So if you were to compare the fuel rack position on an engines with a matching load and RPM once with turbo and once without the non-turbo run would have the rack delivering more fuel. The ALDA would notice the lack of boost and decrease the fuel delivered. Still, the amount of fuel required by the non-turbo run would be more than the turbo despite the ALDA allowing more fuel. That's because the turbo increases efficiency, the fuel needed to maintain RPM at that load will be _less_ with the turbo because less heat is wasted. Add to the confusion the torque curve, the efficiency curve, air resistance curve, etc and it's pretty complex to try to calculate. However, efficiency _does_ equal MPG.
