don't discount the router and/or its power supply. For a quick test,
open a command prompt and issue:
 ping -t google.com

250/275s are dirt cheap, I paid $42 for two of my 275s and $36 for the other
two, all in very good to excellent shape.

350/400s seem to be $50-100.

500s/600s tend to go $100-150, and few people keep the boxes (but I've still got
boxes for any speakers I bought new).

700s seem to go around $200, sometimes a little more, unless you find them at
Goodwill (usually after a cat thought they were giant scratching posts) for $50.

Don't see them on eBay as often as the 500s and 600s.

1000s are the top of the line, I never see them for sale. You can look for
online reviews, but if I recall correctly it's said they are better than windows
at reproducing the sound spectrum but inferior to windows at projecting the
soundstage throughout the room.

I'd audition them, make sure every driver is emitting sound. If he's the
original owner, he probably knows that the DCM logos go to the inside of the
pair. Serial numbers should be consecutive on a factory matched pair.

It never hurts to offer a guy $250 if he's asking $300. If there's a fuse,
driver, or crossover problem, offer him $100 or $150. You can get used drivers
on eBay, fuses are easy, and recapping a crossover shouldn't be a big deal for
you (less of a deal than getting to the crossover anyway.

You should also remember that HP started out as an instrumentation/

far. All computer driven, but they sorta forgot all that in the

I'm wondering if this would be too complicated to power with one
generator
and auto cut-over switches? Perhaps two small generators would be
better?

During the construction and tear-up of our electrical feed I
rectified our two-meter situation and now the wellhouse is
on the single meter. I still, however, did not get what I
want, which is a single cutoff switch, so that I could tie
into the system and power both the well and the house at the
same time. (With the eventual plan being a generator hut
out by the main meter/switch-that-I-didn't-get.)

So we still have two generators. One for/at the house, one
for/at the well.

[MBZ] 124 blue interior - parting out - pristine condition

2011-09-03 Thread Danny Goldberg

I don't often post, but have been a long time (going back to mbz.org) follower.

I have a 1990 124 white on blue parts car that got totaled a few years back, in
what should have been a relatively minor mishap, except it bent the frame. I
have used the power train to revive another 124, but SWMBO now wants it off the
driveway, since there is another 124 parts car on the horizon.

So, i will be parting out a pristine blue interior from a well kept car with
90K that still has the MB factory warning decals on the doors, visors etc. (Car
has been under a cover since it's been off the road there is no sun or water
damage.

Would much prefer to sell the entire interior (all vinyl parts) in one go, but
if not, will consider selling individual seats etc. The sheet metal (doors,
rear panels and front fenders are banged up; there is a pair of headlights,
turn signals (yellow not clear) with the plastic windows in great shape as
well. Not really interested in selling the interior electrical items and gages,
which i plan to keep, still have 2 other 124s on the road.

Did you ever figure out the size? Should be cast on inside if the spare, part
of the code that tells the off-set.

Regarding the caliper return, I'm half tempted to bring all my excess parts,
new stuff that was wrong for one reason or another, and either set up a flee
market table to see if I can recoup some fuel money or maybe trade it back to
Rusty for credit on my next order.

We are still planning the trip, well, maybe just me, SWMBO didn't seem too
enthusiastic about it when I reminded her this a.m.

I just returned from a short week in Italy, drove about 200 km in a Renault
rental, diesel with 6 speed transmission. Fast enough, plenty of room, got 41
mpg in combined driving. Mostly I was in town, but made two trips between
Naples and Gaeta. Once I figured out where the speed cameras were on the
autostrada, I started keeping pace with the faster cars; let's just say I drove
pretty fast but not as fast as some.

On your Main entry panel you have a Master breaker . Have your electrician
replace this with a double throw breaker [come to the electrical supply
house, bring money. For a 200 amp service expect to pay above $800 for
one.].

These type breakers are ON/OFF/ON so you can dedicate ON to power grid. and
the other ON to the generator connection. It's manual so you have to
physically throw the switch but it puts you into total control of your
choice of power.

With such a Master Breaker in place you disconnect from the power grid [very
desireable] and reconnect to your generator without having to fuss. All your
wiring remains the same.

During the construction and tear-up of our electrical feed I
rectified our two-meter situation and now the wellhouse is
on the single meter. I still, however, did not get what I
want, which is a single cutoff switch, so that I could tie
into the system and power both the well and the house at the
same time. (With the eventual plan being a generator hut
 out by the main meter/switch-that-I-didn't-**get.)

So we still have two generators. One for/at the house, one
 for/at the well.

One thing that makes the knife switch a big problem over a breaker or a
transfer switch is that it is not load rated, meaning that it is not intended
to be operated while under load. Doing so can damage and potentially destroy it.

You would have to be sure that everything was turned off before operating it.

That's one of the reasons why transfer switches are expensive - they are load
rated for the amperage rating.

Well stated, Peter.

I just finished listening to a biography of Jobs, and wasn't a bit surprised at
how he screwed up NeXT and nearly trashed Pixar. When he realized that he had
to leave some things to the people who knew their discipline best things
improved significantly.

I have a couple of friends who work at 1 Infinite Loop, and while they are
definitely pro-Steve, they don't drink the Kool-Aid. They have spoken
privately about some of the conflicts he created internally by micromanaging.
In fairness, they are quick to point out his innate sense of drilling down to
the simplest approach in many cases.

Probably the best way this shows up is in their product documentation. For the
most part, there is none, or a very minimal amount. Things should just work.

I've seen mechanical interlocks offered for sale which are basically a sliding
chunk of sheet steel that prevents you from turning a circuit breaker (connected
to the generator) on unless the main breaker is off.

Anybody who can cut sheet metal can make one of those and have it work, provided
that the generator backfeeds the panel through one of the breakers closest to
the main.

Does anybody know if those mechanical interlocks are code legal?

Many of the low cost and low amperage transfer switches use exactly that type

Nothing more than some sheet metal as a toggle that prevents closing of both

I think they are, but when we had our electrical service upgraded
recently, I chose to get a purpose-made, manual transfer switch.

I bought the Reliance Controls TWB2010DR from CSN Stores:

http://www.csnstores.com/Reliance-Controls-TWB-4-8-Circuit-200Amp-Transfer-Panel-Link-for-Generator-up-to-25000-Watt-TWB2010DR-RLC1055.html

We had a 60 A service and upgraded to a 200 A service. This panel
replaced the 200 A outside disconnect my electrician was going to have to
install, at a price not much more than the outside disconnect. I had done
searching around the web, so when I saw CSN Stores, we will match any
competitor, I went with them. The price I found searching was $361 plus
shipping. CSN Stores sold it to me for $361 with free shipping.

My electrician was pleased with the transfer switch and said it was well
made. I sized it so it will take the full output of our Kato generator
(whenever I get that hooked up to a prime mover). It will certainly take
the 15 A output of our homemade, propane-fired generator set that has a
Chevette engine as a prime mover.

(and the development tools became Xcode) so in that sense it was
ultimately a success.

Scully fired Jobs not because the products were a failure, but
because he was interfering in the operations of the BUSINESS. NeXt
failed for the same reasons -- operated by someone who sneered at and
belittled the people who make business operate. Took him a long,
long, time to figure out that people aren't going to drop half their
take home income on a flaky product that barely operates (or doesn't,
in the case of NeXt computers). Believe me, I used OS X 10.1, it
sucked really bad.

Once he got a couple corporate crashes under his belt, he finally
figured out he was neither a software genius nor a hardware designer
(you really do have to have the nuts and bolts theoretical background
for those things, and he didn't finish college) things got better.

We still have to suffer from his attachment to super thin and metal
bodied portables and his weird notion that people only use computers
for a few minutes at a time (and he hates fans), but at least he's
not driving designers insane with irrational demands.

He had a fabulous talent for figuring out new products when he's on a
short leash to the board and some checks them out first, though.

Will be a moot issue soon, as I don't expect him to live more than
six months or so.

Peter

The delay affects only the front light, not the back.

Re: [MBZ] SECOND TRY: Kaleb, How much for a W124 Lug Wrench?

2011-09-03 Thread Walt Zarnoch
We've got a set of 1 drive, hehe...

I just use a 1/2 drive impact rated socket and a 2 foot bar, then jump on
the end. Works perfect for removal.

Torque wrench for setting it.

 That's nice to know.

When you've got a stuck lug, you want at least 2' of bar. If I'm home
when it happens, I go straight to the 3/4 drive 4', which makes the
 task easy.

I would say so. My brother, who was a mechanical engineer for Kenworth,
 has a set of 3/4, but I sure don't.

Perhaps try and hook your computer directly into the modem with a cable
to see if the wireless router is the problem or the modem.

2011-09-03 Thread OK Don
Exactly! I only need the breaker bar with the cheater pipe when I get a
new-to-me used MB. Seems no one else bothers to torque the lug bolts. I take
the wheels off and haul them to the tire store for new tires, work, etc.
rather than let them touch the lug bolts.

Now that is an interesting idea. Don't you have trouble with the mileage

Nope - not at all. I just tell them what the mileage is, and they accept it.
At least at the one local store I've had to use it at.
