[MBZ] Vacuum pump. Was: First experiment with HF tools
Mine also came with oil. Used it ten or twelve times so far with no problem. It also does an oil change much faster than a shopvac. The motor on a shopvac seems to get quite hot when doing oil changes. (Too hot?) Autozone tools have been OK so far. (Sears is a long drive.) Gerry '83 300D '83 240D From: Allan Streib str...@cs.indiana.edu Peter Frederick psf...@earthlink.net writes: A friend of mine bought an AC vacuum pump from them, then spent the rest of the day looking for the oil for it. Nice pump, but no vacuum pump oil in the store, no sign that it was necessary, the whole thing was a pain. I also bought an AC vacuum pump from them a year or two ago. Mine did come with oil. It's worked well for me so far, though I only use it on my own cars, maybe a couple of times a year tops. In a shop environment where it would see frequent use it may not be a good choice. I have never tried their hand tools, though. I'm hoping they are at least a step above Wal-Mart tools, but if they are not at least it's not a lot of money ventured. I'm guessing for moderate-to-low torque applications they will be fine for my purposes. Brian Toscano wrote: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SK_Hand_Tools In 1985 SK became part of Facom Tools. So that's why I started noticing warranty trouble in the spring of 1986. Just minor stuff, the girl at the hardware store, instead of handing me a new tool, spent ten minutes looking the tool up in her warranty book and inspecting it for 'signs of abuse which would negate warranty' before handing me a new tool. I said 'my warranty paperwork from ten years ago says 'unconditional lifetime warranty', she said 'if I don't go by the new book we won't be reimbursed' and I said 'so long, S-K'. I have bought a S-K flare nut wrench since then, after paying too much at a FLAPS for a 'Made in USA' Cal-Van that never would have passed Harbor Freight's quality control. Charging S-K level prices for tools that are uglier than Craftsman on the outside is one thing, when the tool is too ugly to use on the surfaces that grab the fastener, it's unacceptable, so Cal-Van earned a spot on my 'avoid for life' list over 20 years ago over that little $11 line wrench. Anyone have a good sunroof lid assembly for an 83 300TD? This is the manual type. It seems the one on my 83 has a bit of a rust problem at a couple of points so I figure that before I get it painted I will put a good one in there. [MBZ] fixed a fuel leak
Dieselvolk, You may remember that my '95 E300 had begun to use more fuel per mile. I tried changing the fuel filters, but that did not help (as I suspected). A couple weeks ago, just once I could faintly smell diesel at the front of the car after it had been driven, but didn't have time to investigate further (and I really wasn't looking forward to pulling off the intake manifold). Yesterday it really started to reek of diesel fuel, so I pulled off the cross-over intake pipe and the plastic cover over the injectors and return lines. Nothing. Finally found a wet spot under the intake manifold (which was still in place) at the fuel pre-heater assembly. Fuel is supplied from the lift pump, heated, then to the pre-filter. Supply line from the lift pump is held by a hose clamp, and it was loose; apparently I failed to tighten that up last year when I replaced the injection pump timer and vacuum pump and engine wiring harness (and all the associated plastic clips and gaskets). Using a long regular screwdriver I rotated the clamp so I could tighten with a second screwdriver without removing the intake manifold. I love cheap fixes, but hate it when they're self-inflicted! While I was there I took a look at the EGR and associated workings. On this car there is a butterfly valve just before the EGR which operates in concert to restrict clean intake air so that exhaust gas flow from the EGR is increased when called for. I wired the butterfly valve in the full open position, then plugged the hose for the EGR. Later I'll fashion a blocking plate. Not an issue on this car, a small blessing; drove to work this a.m. just fine. I have an app on my Android, RaceDroid, which provides a horse-power graph as well as other data from a 0-60 run. Someday when I have time and an open road, I'll gather some data, then re-enable the EGR and gather more data to see if there is any change. I expect to see a small gain in HP with the EGR disabled. Re: [MBZ] OT Stereo stuff
My motivation for going the FLAC route is to get uncompressed files. After listening to compressed versus uncompressed I am convinced I can tell a difference (FLAC vs. MP3, fir example.) As for speaker impedance, the Magnepans are rated at 5 ohms, and The Fisher has taps for 4 and 8 ohms, so I will run it at 4 ohms and see how things go. With ncompressed, bitrate is a meaningless number. Unless you are looking at disk space. Flac also supports Replay Gain, and the tags can include almost anything. When I rip vinyl LPs, I make the entire disk one flac file, use Audacity and a marker track to mark the beginning of each track, export the marker track as text to create a cue file. This cue file can be used to burn a CD or to make a separate file for each track, encoding in flac, ogg, or I suppose even MP3. This cue file, an photo of the front and back cover, and the audio all go into the master flac file. Thus I have one file that is a full archive of the LP. I haven't done very many yet... I have some concerns about my Fisher 400c being powerful enough to drive the Magnepan speakers I have. It does drive them, but I am not in an environment where I can set them up properly nor drive them to higher sound levels. Hopefully in the near future I'll be able to do this Check the impedance. I don't know anything about that vintage Fisher (mine is older), but the Magnepan speakers have a reputation of very low dips in the impedance. These could cause grief with your amp. After listening to compressed versus uncompressed I am convinced I can tell a difference (FLAC vs. MP3, fir example.) FLAC is a compression codec - but it is lossless. A .wav (or AIFF, or AU) is uncompressed. I certainly agree that uncompressed or lossless compression sounds better than overly compressed. My point that with a flac file, the bitrate has to do with the content of the audio and nothing to do with the quality. I have a test signal that is a 0 dBFS pulse every two seconds - the flac encoded file is small, so the bitrate would be low as compared to the 0 dBFS sine wave. Zero quality loss with either, so bitrate is a meaningless measure when dealing with lossless compression. I have some concerns about my Fisher 400c being powerful enough to drive the Magnepan speakers I have. Check the impedance. As for speaker impedance, the Magnepans are rated at 5 ohms, and The Fisher has taps for 4 and 8 ohms, so I will run it at 4 ohms and see how things go. That's a good start. :) My caution is related to the fact that on nearly all speakers the impedance varies with frequency. The 6 ohm rating in a nominal value - that is, a number to put on the spec sheet. What you - and your amp - will really care about is _minimum_ impedance. Since that amp has a 4 ohm tap, it will probably do okay. The danger? If the load impedance is too low, it will cause the amp to run out of current before it runs out of voltage and not all protection circuitry will respond to over-current. This will be especially true if the amp is undersized, as it is in your case. So the impedance issue shouldn't matter until you get the amp working near full power. --Philip ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

On a W123 sedan trunk, the default position is horizontal. Turn it clockwise 90 deg to vertical to be always locked. From horizontal, turn it counter-clockwise 45 degrees (spring return) to override a vacuum lock state to allow pressing the button to open the trunk. On a S123 wagon hatch, the default position is vertical. It functions like the doors, so no spring-loaded temporary unlock. Up here in the north we use methyl hydrate to unfreeze locks. Can usually buy small squeeze bottles or aerosol spray cans at gas stations here in winter. More than once I have been low on fuel and unable to get the darned cap open to refill at the pump. I think WD40 might prevent freezing but doubt it will do much for you once it is frozen.
