Offset is way too big or way too small, I can never keep straight
which. They sit way too far in towards the center of the car and rub
on the suspension. BTDT with my old C107 which the DPO had put 124
wheels on (with spacers).

The late Marshall Booth, an incredible collector of
information about Daimler Benz diesel automobiles, was a firm
believer in replacing the fuses - even if they looked okay.
Sensible advice since a fuse could have cracked and opened but
still appear functional.

He would often use ALL CAPS to add emphasise his writing.

Some figure he was nearly a god. Other figure he was loose
devil opposed to any deviation from what the MB engineers
designed.

Either way, he had a lot of experience, a knack for organizing
and remembering information, and he was very generous is
sharing his storehouse of data with the rest of us.

Thus faced with a question about an unexplained loss of
funtion (in my browser), Dieselhead drew from our memory of
Mashall and reminded me to CHANGE THE FUSES. *smiles*

I have a number of years worth of Marshall's posts to this
list organized to be browse-able. I think Kaleb was going to
put those up on the okiebenz host.

It appears to be directly beside the IP, between IP and engine, or on

All of the injector fuel lines are dry, and no wetness around the injectors.

Check the hoses to the fuel heater in the heater hose line at the rear of
the driver's side.

If you have not replaced the fuel lines, this would be a good time to do

Re: [MBZ] Hey Hendrik

2011-10-03 Thread Dieselhead
I know 124 wheels are not supposed to work on a 123, but i want to
try one anyway to see what is out of whack. The tires on my project
240D are bad. In fact 2 blew apart completely in the last year, just
sitting still with probably under 30 PSI in them. Very rotten. So I
am thinking of putting the set of almost new Blizzaks on the 300D
(124) and taking the summer wheels to put on the 123 to keep it off
the ground until it is ready to go on the road. I would not be
driving it, other than maybe to move it somewhere to store for the
winter.

Curt, What color is the interior of your 83?

I finally found time to try the 14" wheels from my '84 190D on my
'83 240D after Hendrik assured me they would fit.

It appears they do fit, but the center will NOT stay on the wheel
when mounted on the car. The bearing cup pops the plastic center
right out of the wheel. I didn't bother to try putting the wheel
bolts in when the center popped out, clearly they aren't made for
each other.

Most likely is a return hose. Next most likely is the fuel heater.
Also possible that an injector line is cracking, as mentioned.
Generally they don't crack if all the clamps are in place. I am sure
you have maintained the clamps, So I discount that possibility.

Try holding the throttle so the engine runs around 3000 RPM for a
while. With a warm engine, you might see the leak.

I'd say a fuel line, either hard or rubber cloth covered.

2011-10-03 Thread clay monroe
Italians sort of screwed the pooch on their prosecution and evidence. This was
a railroad and sensationalist circus from the start. If the italians has done
a proper job of looking deeply into the crime, I am sure the outcome would have
been very different.

As it is, the poor girl spent four years locked up. We may never know for sure
if she did the deed, or if some other evil doer was ultimately responsible.
Amanda will make a mint, her folks may get some of the cash they spent on her
defense back, but nobody will get their lives back.

BTW, she went to the same high school my kid did. The teachers and those kids
who knew her provide a fairly good set of character witnesses. She was not
evil. She was a standard kid who did standard kid stuff. Smart and well
liked, not known to engage in antics.

If she picked up some other behaviors while at university, I can not comment,
but she should have had her act pretty together to get into the university, and
to go to Perugia for study. May be that the Kirchner girl got herself into
something she should have been more careful about, and it was easy for the
italians to pin it on the gringa girl.

On the SDL I had a line that corroded/broke against the injector, it
would expand as it heated just enough to drip, then stop after
cooling. Of course that was obvious in mine because I bought it that
way, so I don't know how it first started.

For other leaks I've traced a chalk line of the car in the black
parking lot at work; makes it easy to see where the fluid is coming
out, at least. Plus it gives my coworkers a chance to make fun of me
for doing a dead-body trace of my car. :)

Best,

That, to me sounds like one would need another transmission rather than

It is an adjustment, but most of the external failure modes lead to harsh
shifts. It might flare from wear, from weak springs (k-1 spring??), or
maladjusted vacuum valve or modulator. If something goes wrong where you have
weak or no vacuum, it shifts hard.

I think I'd discount flaring as a sign of wear if the time from park to reverse
was good. If it takes more than two seconds to engage reverse, then I might use
flaring as an additional sign of wear.

Come to think of it, I never had that particular problem. Mine was of the

Rich,

Plan on it. I may not lower the price quite that much, but if you behave I
will throw in a jar of my artisanal jalapeno pepper jelly, made from NW DC
back yard, organically grown peppers, free from any unnatural resources.
This goes great with lamb chops, brie cheese, and (if you believe our
Belgian friend) oatmeal.

I love to use the word "artisanal". It makes me feel like a doer rather
than a thinker.

If you want to keep the car, consider purchasing a good used transmission
from a 1985 300D or SD. Trust me, no matter what band aid you apply to the

improvemnets over the earlier models, shifts better and usually lasts twice

Can you split the two? At our house it was cheaper to buy DSL without
anything else, than pay Time Warner the incremental cost for
RoadRunner. Well, and Time Warner had serious rain fade due to an
ongoing maintenance issue...

We have been streaming-only for a few years now - I have a PlayOn
server set up on a computer downstairs, and PS3s on the televisions.
Our 3Mb pipe is enough for two streams in a pinch, as long as you let
one buffer before you start watching. I highly recommend it if you're
willing to geek out during the setup, and everything you want to watch
is available on Hulu / Netflix / ESPN / Nick / CBS / MLB / etc.

A couple years ago PlayOn was very much a beta program, but it has
stabilized as video providers have locked down APIs, and I have had
very few complaints (from SWMBO/CWMBI) of late.

Best,
-Tim

Re: [MBZ] Heater only hot when parked at idle.

2011-10-03 Thread Michael Canfield
No kidding. Summer is gone and I have not accomplished near enough. I want
to come get the 240 but I keep getting kicked in the ass every time I try to
make plans. I just sold a Suzuki engine I had so I figured ,cool, a bit of
extra cash for a road trip. The very next day my septic system ends up
full. Going out today to dig it up and get them to come pump it out.

Like my friend Jon says, "If it's not one thing, it's all of them."

I need a trailer hitch for the 300d, I could tow a 240 on a dolly with that.

At the end of the month the monstrosity is going, one way or another.

I'm pretty sure one or maybe both of those fittings has a restrictor in
it. Drilling this out will give you more vacuum than you need on that
circuit.

I'd call Rusty for a price on a new main vacuum line. I replaced mine a
few years ago, and it was not all that expensive.

Went this weekend. Absolutely some of the best $60 I have ever spent.
Lots of free swag and Mazda had a sign and drive with skip Barber Racing
school on a close course. You only got 2 laps but it was still lots of
fun. The vettes and jags were awesome. The Audi R18 was whisper quiet.

Re: [MBZ] FIOS (Verizon) vs. Brighthouse

2011-10-03 Thread Curt Raymond
Its funny how they'll treat you like they don't need customers... When we moved
here I'd had Comcast for my cable modem but no internet in the apartment
before. For the house they wanted $200 to flip a switch to enable the cable
modem. No house visit required.

Verizon GAVE me a DSL modem and enabled the service for free. I asked Comcast
to wave their fee which is still a good deal for them as they were $10/mo more
expensive. They wouldn't budge. I said "I'm going to go with Verizon" to which
they replied "You do what you've got to do". So I did and I've been very happy.

Right now I can get all of their digital and HD channels (we've never had the
"premium channels) with phone and 35Mbps Internet including a whole-house DVR
and a total of six (6) TV boxes, three which are full-blown boxes with
everything, three that work with the whole house DVR and have all of the cable
channels (no PPV or interactive menuing) for $127.00/month.

That's with a two year commitment and lifetime whole house DVR.

I'm paying $120/month for two boxes, a "regular" DVR, phone and 15Mbps internet
with Brighthouse.

I would prefer to go with FIOS, myself, but mainly due to the internet speed. I
had this at the inlaws, and it screamed compared to BH.

FWIW, I called BH the other day to see if they would come to the table and just
give me the next tier of Internet speed (25Mbps) to keep me as a customer, and
they blew me off.

In all seriousness the B2 fix is more than 30 minutes, as you need to
drain the transmission, might as well do a filter change then, and while
you're in there I'd do the K1 spring upgrade as well, as it takes only a
few more minutes.

Also you need to be quite attentive to cleanliness any time you open up
the transmission.

Yeah, it sounds like the pretty easy/cheap B2 repair is what you need,
but who knows? Assume you might need to buy a rebuild from Rusty
(unless you have the tools/skills to do a proper rebuild yourself) and
factor that in to your price/bargaining.
