Google XP 9 in 1 and download the *.iso and burn it to a CD. It's a
bootable CD that contains 9 different versions of XP. Select the one
you wish to install based on your license key, and you're good to go.
It's a great tool for computer admins that manage multiple different XP
flavors, Home, Pro, MCE as I have under my care at the Y.

However, I've (luckily?) never had to install XP from scratch---always

Hence a dumb question: Am I right in thinking that the point of buying
a key-less XP disk, say this one:

would be to install it on a VM using a license key from another
computer that originally came with XP installed? I have at least one
broken Thinkpad I bought for parts which came with XP Professional.
Do I need an XP Home key for an XP Home disk, or will the XP Pro key
from the bottom of the Thinkpad work? What's the difference between
Home and Pro, anyway?

A call to your local gas company will answer that question, I'll bet.

The gas folks are very safety conscience and will have that info at their
finger tips for your local area. Somewhere on your home gas regulator
there is a sealed adjustment they can "tune " to meet requirements. [do
resist the urge to try this yourself].

Viking is a serious bit of kitchen equipment with a high end purchase
price.. well supported by Viking for repair parts last contact I had with

Enjoy it. Hope you can cook. You just lost one excuse for not.

Um, yes - extended changes is what you do with that pricey artificial oil.
I have extended it as far as 22,530 klicks (OM603) and the analysis came
back fine. The suspended soot indicated it could have gone 50% more.

Far less, I would think. When my Porsche 944 developed startup lifter
clatter, Mobil 1 stopped it in 200 miles. And it wasn't the lifter but the
drainback check valve in the top of the block. Admittedly, the oil flow in the
engine is not the same as an MB but the effect was the same. That is, the oil
supply for the lifters had drained down through the pump into the crankcase.
I was using Kendall GT-1 at the time.

The term comes from the sound of a hammer striking a large nail. A short
sharp "crack" with no regular pattern. It's a combustion noise caused by a
less than perfect spray pattern due to an injector defect. Either water
damage which is permanent or muck which can in theory be flushed out in situ.

It is certainly not heard from deep in the block.

Nailing was the reason for thirteen injector replacements during my '78
300D's warranty period and before I installed the water separator. In that car,
it was heard mostly during low flow conditions, such as at idle or pulling
away from a stop.

Pulsating brakes can be caused by not breaking in the new pads/discs,

Chinese rotors and/or internally failed brake lines (acting as a one way check valve, causing the brake pads to drag on the rotor, heating it up and warping it). Brake lines that are over 20 years old have probably out lived their service life.

[MBZ] 190d charging

2012-02-04 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Was checking some stuff on the kids 190d and was driving it down the street all
the sudden the charging light comes on dim. So I check the voltage and it's
about 13.5. Whats the spec with the engine running? Pulled the regulator did
not appear way worn down to me but swapped in another with slightly longer
contacts. Same thing. Swapped in another alternator with the swapped in
regulator(so same alt and reg off parts car) and same thing. Both alternators
have bosch rebuilt stickers on them. Should I trial and error with other
alternators or get a new one? Or do I have a false light coming on? Does not
seem low enough to turn the light on

I basically don't go to Autozone, Pep Boys, or the like anymore. I go
to NAPA, or Car Quest, though here I prefer the NAPA shop.

Last "deal" I got at AZ was on oil and a filter, but that invoved
sending in separate rebate forms on the oil and the filter. Sorry,
spending time filling out their little form, $0.40 postage and waiting 8
weeks for a $2.00 check, then taking that to the bank just isn't worth
it. And I'm sure that's why they set it up that way.

P.S. You can do a quick evap check on one of these even in winter. With
the car running and the climate control on Auto, press and hold the REST
button until the display enters diag mode. Press the left Auto button
until you reach item seven, that's evaporator pressure in bar. It
should read three in cool weather with the compressor off and go as high
as 14 or so when cycling. Make sure it doesn't read zero.

Chinese rotors and/or internally failed brake lines (acting as a one way check

It looks to me that the front end is high, meaning no engine. So
that + andrew's engine would likely still leave you short parts. And
you would be short the factory hydraulic pump for the suspension and
a means to drive it.

My guess is the new filter and a valve adjust would cure the 300D.

Re: [MBZ] 240D blower control

2012-02-04 Thread Curt Raymond
Dug into the '78 240D today to replace the blower motor control. A quick Google
shows Dimitri went through this a few years ago but nothing specific.

This job is a BASTARD since I couldn't figure out how to remove the plate the
controls mount to, thus all your fiddling has to go through a 1 1/2" gap
between that panel and where the radio is. Getting the old one out was bad, the
cable (still don't know what its for) had siezed up. If I'd realized that
before I could have lubricated it I think.

Once the old unit was out (turn the switch ON to extend and remove the cable)
replacement was the opposite of removal except everything is harder because you
can't see. Its hard to get the electric connected, hard to get the cable
connected, hard to move everything into position and hard to be sure you've
done it all right... GAH!

Anyway its all in now, the replacement came from Hammie (RIP), it makes me feel
good to replace something with a part from one of my old cars.

I even had time to put in a replacement radio for the stupid Becker whatever it
was that I HATED. This one is marked Becker Mexico CD Pro and I like is
ergonomics much better. I need a manual bad though, I don't understand how to
program presets for instance, or how to get it into manual tune mode.

Somebody had posted some time ago a website that listed the Beckers with their
actual model numbers and pictures, does anybody have that link?

some other box (a Compaq), and used a key from a dead computer someone
gave me (which is a system builders key on an old Compaq) , it phoned
home and was happy. My son had an old Acer laptop that was gorked, it
had WinXP MCE on it, but he did not have the recovery disks and Acer no
longer has images on their web site (per MSFT request!) so I found it on
the tubes, downloaded WinXPMCE, burned it to a disk, and installed it,
and used the key on the laptop -- it phoned home and is happy now.

I would not pay for a disk, you can find them on the tubes and download,
then use your valid key to activate it. I would not bother with the
"keys" you find on the tubes, MSFT still trolls for them and kills them
occasionally. Oh, and I think all the XP versions are on the disk, it
all gets installed then when you activate a key it activates whatever
version/features are associated with that particular key.

Short answer: yes.

(Thanks for sending out the compilation email, Loren, BTW.)

A 30" Apple Cinema LCD, I presume?

I have a 128 Mb Radeon 9800 Pro card in my Sawtooth G4 which does
dual-link DVI. Got it to run a 26" Doublesight monitor at 1920x1200
which the previous card I had couldn't. (That was a Radeon 8500,
itself an upgrade from the stock ATI card, slow and low-res by modern
standards.)

Not all the Radeon 9800 Pros are dual-link DVI capable, and not all
have Mac-compatible BIOSs, so caveat emptor. IIRC I paid about $50
for mine a couple of years ago on fleaBay.

I have the MB service manuals on CD if you want a copy. I think they

Just got back from looking at it.

Nothing obvious going on, he uses the local Pennzoil oil change place, so
there's no telling what sort of garbage they're putting in it (the sticker said
10W-30). Ouch!

I gave him a spare Mann filter I had on the shelf and a shopping list. He's
going to go pick up some Mobil 15W-50 today and we'll probably change it this
afternoon or tomorrow.

Any opinions on how long it will be before this stops (it didn't do it when I
was there.) 10,000 miles? Less?

He works close by, so he doesn't put a lot of miles on the car. I suggested
after we get the oil changed that he take a road trip on I-75 for 20-30 miles
to get it worked up.

Thanks, everyone.

[MBZ] Useful computer stuff this week

2012-02-04 Thread Dieselhead
I compiled a listing of the computer tips from this week. I thought
this week was particularly fruitful. It is mostly penguin or
penguin/winders interaction. Mac content is the FreeNAS, a penguin
that can sport AFS.

FREENAS Fileserver
http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/01/how-to-set-up-a-home-file-server-using-freenas/

I've started using OpenBSD at work. I like it. Simple, stable, and
tweaking is NOT encouraged unlike many Linux distros. It just works
and otherwise stays out of your way. Allan

If you want a *real* command line on Windows, install cygwin. First
thing I do on any new Windows workstation.AllanYou can run
UNIX programs, with UNIX real shells

http://www.libreoffice.org/

And you can get a better command line back again! A bash shell
running in MS Win. I have it installed on the virtual machines
running XP. Better than DOS, but will still run the DOS commands.
http://www.mingw.org/Or if all you really want is an alternative
to command.com, use minGW. It gives you a bash shell it
tab-completion, emacs-type movement (ctrl-a, ctrl-e, alt-d, alt-b,
alt-f, etc).

WUBI Google for "wubi", it allows you to install Ubuntu linux on a
Windows machine, and dual-boot. No permanent changes are made, and
windows stays available. If the penguin isn't the thing for you, you
can remove it via the add/remove programs menu in control panel. It
uses the windows file system, and runs bare metal on the hardware.

Install Ubuntu, install VirtualBox, install XP on a VirtualBox VM. By
running Samba on my host, XP can use a directory on my host as a
network drive so all my data is on the host.

Same calipers? I would start to doubt the calipers...

I have Akebono pads, installed with new rotors on my 300D less than two
years ago and they are pulsating. This will be the second set of rotors
gone bad. May try to have them turned if they are not rotted out. I
seem to have trouble with rotors rusting...

That leaves G5 and some G4s.

Part of my 'upgrade' plan was to buy the G5 I now have,
then keep an eye out for a fast quad at the right price.
This one would then become the backup. I do also need to
find the right video card for this one, the one it came
with can't run the 30" display at full resolution.

SWMBA's future laptop will be the first Intel crap in
the house. (I count not the Grid with the plasma screen,
or the cheap $20 Presario that has Linux on it.)

Re: [MBZ] M103 Lifter tick

2012-02-04 Thread Hendrik & Fay
Weel, you can use M1, however..I have had the tick on
various M102/3 engines, tried M1..tick tick tick, stick Diesel
engine oil in the M103 and after a while we have no tick tick tick.

Diesel engine oil = more detergent.

Hendrik
who has no scientific proof of the effects of a high detergent oil

Most weeks they have 2-4 Imacs available. nothing of the intel
vintage has showed up yet. That leaves G5 and some G4s. Don't know
about a power supply alone. Probably won't see that.

Do they have any of the flat screen iMac machines? Or any PSU's for the
same?

Friend has a ppc iMac (G5?) with a boffed PSU, caps keep popin even when
replaced, otherwise was running ok. Have yet to check logic board...
