Fisher Space Pens
Fisher Space Pens has been an innovative American writing company since the
early 1950s. In 1953, Paul Fisher invented the first universal refill which
could be used in most ball point pens. However, always eager to discover the
next great pen invention, Fisher went on to invent the first pressurized ball
point refill. The refill was an overnight sensation. Made of a special
semisolid ink and then pressurized with nitrogen, Fisher's pressurized refill
was guaranteed to write upside-down, underwater and was dependable in extreme
temperatures of hot and cold. However, with the dawn of the NASA space age, the
Fisher Space Pen was about to make history alongside American astronauts and
space shuttles. Beginning with the Apollo 7 mission in 1968, Fisher Space Pen
has become the standard writing instruments used by American astronauts in
space. (They're currently on sale for $23 to $150)

Went to the warehouse to look at the range this morning. It's a Viking
Professional range but it's a household model. Data plate on the back says
certified for household use and it has a normal-sized gas connection and
ordinary 110VAC power cord.

It does seem to be in good shape, and the included hood is a plus. But good to
know that it's not actually commercial when it comes to bidding on it. Also
good to know there should be no code, insurance, etc. issues with installing it.

Re: [MBZ] A great racing flick

2012-02-07 Thread Rich Thomas
It was in widescreen HD on Netflix, and it looked pretty good for
using that archival footage and in-car cameras, but you are correct in
that BD would add nothing to it. I thought the flick was quite well
done, a straightforward documentary of a guy who was really really good
at what he did, and seemed to be rather humble in doing it, and quite
human in his awareness of his skills and his challenges. Alain Prost
came off as being a real ass (well, he is French...), but it seemed that
Senna got over it, and so did Prost toward the end. (Prost got kicked
off Ferrari at one point for criticizing the car, the Italians did not
like that insult I guess.) It was interesting to see that Senna beat
Schumaker in a race or two, clearly out-drove him but then I guess
Schumie was young and inexperienced at that point. In one interview
Senna really smacked Jackie Stewart for questioning his (Senna's) number
of crashes -- not in a blustering way but just really straightforward.
The F1 director of the time (some old French dude) came off as a
complete fool, and Senna smacked him a time or two as well for clearly
being in the Prost camp. Very interesting movie, esp as it covered the
time when electronics were just starting to become prevalent in the cars
and it was clearly a revolution over the drivers' skills. Senna really
described that well, and seemed at a loss as to how to deal with it (and
that seemed to be what in the end killed him though it was never really
resolved).

One thing that was missing was more about his personal life -- he seemed
very family oriented, and there were women about, but it only alluded to
one in particular who seemed to be his main squeeze, or wife, I couldn't
tell. He was very focused on his country, which I thought was very
telling about his personality, though it tracks with the (few)
Brazilians I know.

Every time I've developed brake pulse problems it came back to a warped
rotor. Why would it not be the case on MB car?

Thanks in advance. I await your learned advice.

Grant...

That is probably true in a 0 humidity environment like AZ, but in the
north, if the car sits a long time, particularly in the
winter/spring, the rotors rust, and they rust differently under the
caliper. This causes a pulsing the same as a warped rotor. Unless
there is really severe pitting under the caliper, this will often go
away with hard braking.

I recently had pulsing on a non-MB veeehicle, and in that case, some
genius decided to use ball bearings for the front wheel bearings to
save a nickle. When one bearing wears out or disintegrates, you get
pulsing in the brake. I would guess on an MB that extremely loose
wheel bearing could cause the same situation.

I installed a natural gas tankless heater (Bosch AquaStar) at our first
house (close to 10 years ago now) and overall it was great. I don't
know from experience but I think today's heaters work even better. They
are not without their quirks, at least ours wasn't.

They are sensitive to the incoming water temperature. Our tap water in
the summer can be almost 80 degrees right out of the tap, in the
wintertime it can get down below 50 degrees. If the heater doesn't
compensate for incoming water temperature (ours did not) you have to
adjust it seasonally.

Also, low-flow usage could be a problem. Below a certain flow rate, the
burner shuts off. So even though water is flowing from the hot water
tap, it might be cold. Newer tankless heaters may handle this better.

We moved, and our current house has a standard tank-type heater. We
also got a front-loading high-efficiency clothes washer (LG) and that is
where the other potential issue comes in. When the washer fills, it
doesn't just open the water valve, fill, and close the valve. It fills
in a series of short cycles. Water is on for five seconds, then off.
The on, then off. Repeat until it decides it has enough. With a
tankless heater, I don't think the water would ever really get hot since
the burner would be shutting off only moments after it ignited. So if
you have appliances that use water in pulses, tankless may not be a good
choice.

What do you think about running one of these immediately downstream of the
tankless? It would provide hot water in low flow and brief draw situations where
the tankless can't handle it. A tankless with a modulating burner is probably
important too.

Some years ago I knew someone who installed a tankless system and they did
not like it. As I recall, the problem was that all his faucets became
clogged because the minerals in the water that were getting collected in
the water heater were making their way to his taps and shower instead.

I don't think water heaters last as long as they used to. I would probably
pay for a warranty if it can be used the way you want.

$338, and for the lifetime tank, $460.
Home Depot Supply (warehouse) sells the Rheem 50 gallon for $465 and the 40
gallon for $369. Having had the 50 gallon heater here at home and in a
rental, I see no advantage of a 50 gallon for four person, so I pllan to buy
 the 40 gallon this time.

But what brand? And is the lifetime warranty worth $200 more? This will go in
the garage with easy access, so replacing it would not be a big deal. On the
other hand, why buy a heater (or roof) that you know will have to be replaced
in your lifetime? Does it matter if the heater is the tall type? Any size
will fit where I am putting it. I would even consider a cosmetically damaged
one if the price was right.
I'd be interested in your comments and collective wisdom.
Oh, and I don't think I'm interested in a tankless. Too new fangled for me.

[MBZ] Prices

2012-02-07 Thread Dieselhead
Somebody bought my old VW manual on fleabay
today. In it I found a receipt in it from 1987
for Wabbit parts. Prices were interesting:

Struts: 19.95 Ea
Ties rods: 33.47
Axle boot kit: 9.95

But the big change is the shipping. 12 lbs was 2.56. UPS was reasonable then.

Kinda like my parents lamenting the nickle loaf
of bread when bread was 2 for 39¢.

Having a fiat currency means inflation or bust.

Shipping?? In 1987 we had a *good* imported auto parts store right in
town. Chain FLAPS put them out of business, but they don't sell
anything worth buying.

Well, this was a local place with 4 locations. The one with the most
parts was 100 miles away. the closest was 70. The guy at the one
100 miles away always gave me the tips of what to get and what to
avoid, just like Rusty. For 2.56, there is no way I could afford to
drive there.

Chain FLAPS put them out of business too. Earlier, there had been a
VW dealer 25 miles away, but VW shut it down.

My old Victorian was full-cut (actually rough-cut that had not been
milled down) lumber. Restoration meant cutting down the next size up of
dimension lumber, or going to the old local lumber company down the
street where they actually had full-cut local pine lumber, just like the
original stuff.

US modular construction is 4 increments. I don't know what the

2012-02-07 Thread Dimitri Seretakis
I just did a repair on my Italianate barn. I had to cut down some scrap 3x5
lumber to create a true 2x4. The 3x5 was left over from some skylights I had
installed where I wanted the dimensions and texture of the rafters to be
identical to the original. I had to go to some old timer sawmill and have them
saw down the wood to my specs-interesting place.

Well, I know that, but I meant the RTW equivalent to the US modular
building system. I'd guess it is 100mm increments, but I don't know.
It may vary by country, region, or continent too. What I saw in
Germany seemed to be a lot of tile block construction. (Stucco over)
Maybe 100 x 200 x 300 tiles Wood construction may vary too.

I grew up on a farmlet, and we had a big lumber pile for misc.
construction. (Salvaged from a brooder house, etc.) All rough-cut
2x4, probably cut on the farm itself, that's what a 2x4 was to me.
I was old enough to walk to a lumber store by myself before I found
out that 2x4's weren't 2x4.
