Re: [MBZ] OT - DC-7
No 7s for me. I flew on a DC-6 on an interisland flight when I was a kid. 1965. Hnl-Ito My first flight on a prop driven plane. Right after my first flight on a jet - PanAm 707. THAT was FLYING! The 6 was a blast for me. over water, it started vibrating, and eventually they feathered #2, closest to my window. A lot of people started to go nuts, but the pilot came on and told us there was no worry, so the fools settled down. I knew the plane could reach Hilo from where we were on 2 engines, and land safely, so I thought it was a blast to be on a flight where something happened and see how the crew handled it. Back then the crew could fly with the cockpit door open. On the return trip we flew the other airline on F-27, and I thought that was neat too, because I could look out the window and see the RR on the engine. I flew ON one when I was a kid. --R On 3/17/12 9:48 PM, Mountain Man wrote: What a beast. Did Wilton ever fly a massive craft like this? The DC-7 was a very short-lived aircraft. The long range version (the 7C) with Wright Trubo-compound engines and a wing stretch could fly non-stop New York to London, but two years after it entered service Boeing introduced the 707, and piston engined airframes were history on long routes, just about as fast as airlines could put a 707 or DeHavilland Comet in serivce. If the glow plug light comes on during driving, either the glow plug relay is faulty or there is a momentary disconnect in the ignition supply to the relay, that resets the relay to the pre-glow condition. Re: [MBZ] 300 ACC Issue
Thanks, Manfred, I'll contact you next time I'm going up that way and bring along the ram just in case. Gerry From: "MG" From what I remember reading on their web site you can use any oil and even mix and match the various refrigerants. In my case I had been using 134a and had the ester oil in there. There was enough in there to have about 5lbs pressure. I just shook the can and then inverted the can and ran it in like it said. I actually put in one can last year with the 134a to get the system up to cooling right near the end of the summer and it worked just the same as the 134a alone. Over the winter most of everything leaked out so now I have pretty much just the envirosafe in it. The leak seems to be at the fill valve so not having any way to recover the stuff I guess I will just have to wait till it leaks out again and then replace the valve. I seem to remember having done that before but they don't seem to last very long. They do say not to put the stuff into a vacuum so maybe you will have to put just enough 134a in there to get about 5lbs and then go from there. Two cans was just right for mine so you probably don't need any more then that. If you want to come over some time I have some extra so we can put that in right quick. Re: [MBZ] Use of synthetic oil in older diesels
Speaking of Oils and Walmart's Branded Oil "Super Tech 15W40", I had the Lab test a sample from a new bottle of this that I had just bought at WallyWorld. See the 1st column below - Since I didn't run these Oils in my cars the only numbers that tell a story are the Additives - all other values are dependent on engine use. So, we have the following Additive Levels - Sodium - 7 15 Potassium - <10 <10 Molybdenum - 42164 Phosphorus - 1124 1375 Zinc - 1262 1328 Calcium - 1105 3456 Barium - <10 <10 Magnesium - 83553 Antimony - <30 <30 Vanadium - <1 <1 A test of a new sample of 0W20 Mobil 1 has Additives with values shown in the 2nd column. Obviously, the big differences are in Molbdenum (a lubricating additive and in some situations a indication of Ring Wear), Calcium and Magnesium. There are some minor differences in the ZDDP additives whose abilities are pretty well known. The Calcium is used as Detergents, dispersants, acid neutralizer. The Magnesium is used as a Dispersant, detergent additive, alloying metal. I will leave it at that - I have 1 or 2 other samples of new oil that was done -- I'll dig them out and see if they are relevant - Have a great weekend! Some extended interval might be possible, but you need to use oil analysis to determine soot levels to arrive at change intervals. THe OM60x engines don't get as much soot in the oil as the iron head engines do. ULSD fuels in theory should produce less soot in the iron head Diesels too. The arguments come in whether the CI rated M1 oils still contain high enough levels of some components to adequately protect older Diesels. Beware of Castrol syntec and other "synthetic" oils. They provide NO extended change interval capabilities. Jury is still out on Royal Purple and Valvoline synthetic. List member LarryT can help with oil analysis. In them there are references to using M1 oil, and I am a bit confused/curious. I have been under the impression that the older diesels should not be using synthetic oils, and not to switch from dino to synthetic. Am I wrong here?? You have a dead mobo -- probably swollen capacitors. If you can get it to start, check the CPU temp in BIOS - very likely it will be 65 or 70C in a minute or two from ripple current leaking into the CPU DC power. They will usually start up stone cold, but get flaky fast with lots of read/write errors, BSOD, etc, and eventually trash your OS install by damaging files due to disk write errors. The CPU gets HOT, which can also give you fits, especially if the temperature overload emergency shut down doesn't happen fast enough. A mew mobo, or a good used one isn't that expensive. Re: [MBZ] 603 turbo WAS:smokin SDL
Oil gets in compressor naturally from oil breather in head. The oil feed pipe runs right over the exhaust and I've had one break there dripping on exhaust. Haven't really kept up with the thread, sorry. It's a shame I just sold my old one for $80 on ebay :(. The euro manifolds (sans egr) can be had for not that much money and do wonders for the looks of the engine bay :D -Rolf On 3/16/2012 10:23 PM, Dieselhead wrote: How would you get oil in the compressor if the oil feed was leaking? It accounts for leaking outside the turbo, but not oil inside the turbo. Anyhow, I had it just about done by noon, then found a tin ring on the ground. Figured out it must have been inside the flex coupling between the turbo and exhaust pipe flange. So I took the tail apart and slid the ring in. The last bolt was the inner bolt for the hanger at the back of the turbo (not the one behind that that supports the exhaust flange). It took me hours to get it in. finally got it by loosening everything more, and taking the bracket loose from the manifold. The inside nut on the bracket to the manifold is a bugger too. I robbed a allen capscrew from the EGR to bolt the turbo to the football eliminator pipe. That kept me going without having to run out and find a bolt to buy. Since I forgot the EGR eliminator kit, I got a 3/4" copper sweat coupling, sawed through it lengthwise, unwrapped it and flattened it, then held it to the ERG nipple on the football eliminator pipe while I scribed a mark. Oh, I annealed it as described on here a few months ago. Then I cut out the circle with tinsnips, tapped around the edges holding it to the manifold nipple and then clamped it on. One half of the EGR eliminated. I went out and bought a bolt, then used the remaining chunk of copper to use as a gasket/plate under the EGR. That blocked the other side of the EGR, but still left the EGR hanging. Not pretty, but functional until I get the plate attached to the engine on the next trip. Changed the serpentine belt, and took it for a road test. Lots of smoke at startup, and heavy smoking at low speeds. At one stoplight, smoke was coming out from under the hood and being drawn into the interior ventilation. got to to stoplight highways and that gave me a chance to spool up the turbo several times, with much smoke. then onto the interstate, laying down a smokescreen that would make a destroyer skipper proud. Out on the interstate for 5 miles cleaned out a lot. Up to 80. Then took an exit, got off drove around and then back on with it floored. That laid a really good smokescreen down. Had it close to 80 at the top of the ramp. That was the last smoke I saw. drove back along stoplight highway. I could not see any smoke when i floored it on takeoff. After I got back, there was no oil dripping and everything seemed good, so I packed up the tools and started to get ready for the trip home. (1987 300SDL) Oil in compressor is from intake not turbo. Garret or KKK? It looks like some things are accessible from above, and some from below. What is the best method for getting the turbo out? ***prior post*** I think I am on to something. With the crossover off, the insides are abnormally clean. Like a complete M1 wash. No gunk, no black, except where oil has pooled a little. Started up the engine. when I revved up the engine enough so that the turbo started, and held it there, there was oil climbing up the throat of the turbo and running counterclockwise to the high side of the throat. if I ran the RPM up to 3k or so, then the air blew away the oil. It is not enough to get a bath. I am suspecting that what I am seeing is enough to wash the crossover/intake clean, smoke, especially on startup, and washdown the port side of the engine through the crossover pipe not being sealed well. My guess is that any visible oil is too much oil. Is this correct? The turbo seal failures I have heard of have been catastrophic. This is not. But I suppose it could go catastrophic at any time. Any body got a cheap source for a turbo cartridge? Les Blumner had a source that was something like $80. Re: [MBZ] 300 ACC Issue
From what I remember reading on their web site you can use any oil and even mix and match the various refrigerants. The directions on the can only mentions gasoline engined cars and the fact that one can (150cc) will "treat" 19 gal. so I'm a little apprehensive about using the fuel filter procedure as I'm wondering if this high a concentration of this stuff would be safe in a diesel?
