They strobe due to the lack of wattage. Raise the wattage and the things slow
down. I looked at the resistor thing and load balancer, but I do not want to
have to bugger each bulb to make it draw what the old electronics wants to see.
I know it will only draw when in use, but still... There are all sorts of
formulae that spells out how much resistance I would need. Means I have to
booger the used to be side marker, as well as the one in the box below the
bumper, and the set in the tail light.

One would think the chinese would have known this was an issue and just put a

So?

The problem I now have is that they are not playing well with the
blink relay.

Naturally. As a convenience/safety feature they're calibrated to
require the correct load in order to flash at the normal speed.
You will need to open up the relay and find the timing components
(R, C) and change them to no longer care about the proper load.
A nice bit of reverse-engineering. (My towing flasher in the pickup
does not have that variable-speed feature. It's different than the
'normal' flasher.)

Of course, if one of your lights _does_ fail you will no longer
have any warning about this.

Series resistance is not what you need. To make the flasher
run at the right rate you need a _parallel_ resistance, and
rather a small one, to restore the current draw that the relay
expects. So, having done that what was the point of all this
work? I find that light bulbs last a very long time, and I
_really_ hate the jarring fast strobe on/off cycle of the LED
lights. The slower rate of lumens change of an incandescent
bulb is _much_ less jarring to the people looking at 'em.

One would think the chinese would have known this was an issue and
just put a dang resister in their little lights

A resistor that consumes nearly what the old incandescent did?
For a turn light, maybe a 20W resistor? It'll get just as hot
as a light bulb, and so will need to be in a physical package
much the size of a light bulb. What was the point again?

Uh oh. I think you have limited options.

Replace the capacitor or resistors in the flasher.

Or add ballast resistance to get the current back up to where
the existing components work right again.

Or build you own flasher.

On a USA car with a standard flasher, a heavy-duty flasher is
available that doesn't depend on the lamp current as part of
it's time cycle. I don't think such a device is available for
Mercedes.

So this morning my wife sends me a text early (late for her, I
think she
was up at like 4AM) and says the hot water was minimal when she
took a

shower. First thought was, well it helped wake you up, but that is
beside the point.

So I ponder this a minute and remembered having a warm shower
yesterday

evening (warmer than ambient, which is quite warm at this time) so
figured the water heater was pretty much OK, yesterday anyway.
Then I
recalled she had done like 4 loads of laundry, so figured that
drained
down the tank (80gal electric) but it should have recovered
overnight.
So then I remember there is a control box the electric company
has in
there that supposedly they could control the thing. Now the PO
of the
house told me as near as he could tell it never did anything,
but he got

a break on the electric bill so let them put it in. I put in a new
water heater 3 yr ago, and as near as I can tell the control box
never
did anything either, but I hooked the WH into it anyway when I
replaced
it (and I thought about bypassing it, but did not as it was
easier just

to wire into it).

So I go look at the WH in the closet, and shonuff the light on
it is
blinking. It has some sort of smart controller with an LED
blinky,
and the code said Failed Initialization or something. I am
not sure
how a WH initializes, other than just turning on and off, but
there you
go. So I push the reset button and the light goes steady, I
hear the

coils start to heat water, bueno. I guess it initialized happily.

So then I go look at it a while later and the green light is
completely
off, and the controller box LED display says P whereas before
I think
it said O and of course there is nothing on the box to
indicate what P
and O mean. I figure P means off and O means on, whatever sense
that
makes. It has Bypass and Vacation buttons, the Vacay
button turns
the controller off (or some other symbol lighted up, I forget)
and back

on, the Bypass button doesn't do anything at that point. Anyway,
after awhile it comes back on again, with an O showing and
there was
hot water for evening shower. I guess it recovered OK during
the day

when it was running.

I am figuring since it is fairly warm these last few days the
electric
company is actually doing some controlling and the controller
confused
the WH smart controller to where it was having fits. I am
wondering
if that external power on/off is going to bugger my WH or WH
controller

at some point.

Technology marches forward. We are in the woods with not a lot of
direct sunlight at any given time during the day, or I would
seriously
consider augmenting the thing with a solar panel water heater of
some sort.

The LEDs themselves are not the problem; the way the engineers designed
the drive circuits for the LEDs is. On some LEDs, you can get more light
out of them by pulsing the current driving them, with a higher peak
current but the same average current than just driving them with a
constant current. If the engineers just drove them with a constant
current, the illumination would be constant.

[MBZ] OT Drug Costs

2012-07-06 Thread Randy Bennell

Just to continue this a bit further.

I use a puffer for asthma - or allergies - take your pick.

Morning and Night, I take a puff from a little cylinder in an orange
plastic holder.

I have paid anywhere from $8 to $45 for the same thing at pharmacies
that are only a few blocks apart.

The big chain stores charge the most.

We are getting little one man independent pharmacies in medical clinics.
They are the ones who undercut the big places.

I was amazed when I used the small shop as I had been buying at the big one.

A friend takes a fair amount of medication. He found that he could get a
better price at the small ones and approached the owner of the one of
the big places and said he would continue buying there as he always had
if they matched the price. The declined.

Re: [MBZ] Leds flashing

2012-07-06 Thread RELNGSON
LED bulbs are great at lowering the amperage over all.  The problem I
now have is that they are not playing well with the blink relay.  The
things are now too fast instead of proper timing.  Anybody have enough
 electric
thinkers to point me toward how to fix this?..

There are turn light flashers that are not dependent on current flow for
the flash interval which I think are used when additional lights such as
trailers are added. The question is does MB use some goofball system that won't
accept a standard flasher unit. And, changing conventional bulbs to LEDs is
becomming more common so this is not a new question. Remember that these LED
replacement bulbs in standard sockets are very directional so don't show up
well at an angle.

Why not drop by O'Reilly's and consult with the counterman?

The LEDs themselves are not the problem; the way the engineers
 designed
the drive circuits for the LEDs is. On some LEDs, you can get more light
out of them by pulsing the current driving them, with a higher peak
current but the same average current than just driving them with a
constant current. If the engineers just drove them with a constant
current, the illumination would be constant.

I _really_ dislike the strobing in cars, too...

How many of you that see this strobing effect wear glasses?

I see lots of cars with LED lights and none of them do what you describe.
Just yesterday I was behind a new Cadillac SUV-thing with bright rear LED

We made ice cream on the 4th.
Enjoying a bit of ice cream today it occurred to me that the varied
experience on this forum might even know one of our favorite ice
creams. I bet there isn't an ice cream vendor in the country that
sells black licorice ice cream. Great taste and one we probably make

My wife makes wonderful ice cream with a KitchenAid stand mixer attachment.
The last time she asked what flavor I wanted, I requested green tea, made
with some bulk tea from my favorite Chinese restaurant. It was
astonishingly good!

More on topic: I have a cousin Mario who makes wonderful gelato:

http://www.amatogelato.com/index.html

I don't know if he makes black licorice, but he makes quite a few flavors.
In the past he has made Champagne and even Viagra flavored gelato (I don't
think this was naturally flavored!). Durian is a staple in his shop, that's
the one that has a lid over the container to contain the odor.

Never heard of the stuff, so I looked it up:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durian

The durian is the fruit of several tree species belonging to the genus
Durio and the Malvaceae family[1][3] (although some taxonomists place
Durio in a distinct family, Durionaceae[1]).

Widely known and revered in southeast Asia as the king of fruits, the
durian is distinctive for its large size, unique odour, and formidable
thorn-covered husk. The fruit can grow as large as 30 centimetres (12 in)
long and 15 centimetres (6 in) in diameter, and it typically weighs one
to three kilograms (2 to 7 lb). Its shape ranges from oblong to round,
the colour of its husk green to brown, and its flesh pale yellow to red,
depending on the species.

The edible flesh emits a distinctive odour, strong and penetrating even
when the husk is intact. Some people regard the durian as fragrant;
others find the aroma overpowering and offensive. The smell evokes
reactions from deep appreciation to intense disgust, and has been
described variously as almonds, rotten onions, turpentine and gym socks.
The odour has led to the fruit's banishment from certain hotels and
public transportation in southeast Asia.

The durian, native to Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia, has been known to
the Western world for about 600 years. The 19th-century British
naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace famously described its flesh as a rich
custard highly flavoured with almonds. The flesh can be consumed at
various stages of ripeness, and it is used to flavour a wide variety of
savoury and sweet edibles in Southeast Asian cuisines. The seeds can also
be eaten when cooked.

There are 30 recognised Durio species, at least nine of which produce
edible fruit. Durio zibethinus is the only species available in the
international market: other species are sold in their local regions.
There are hundreds of durian cultivars; many consumers express
preferences for specific cultivars, which fetch higher prices in the
market.

Also had the low oil pressure thingy in my 300TE, due to using a

I think it's more the instantaneous on/off of LEDs
vs. not-quite-as-abrupt brightening/darkening of an incandescent bulb.

Also if you are directly in line with the LEDs they are almost
blindingly bright.

And yes, I wear glasses if it matters...

My question was for those who see strobing, do you wear glasses? Since
you don't see strobing..

I see the same thing. There's a definite strobing effect with LED taillights
and brake lights. Definitely on GM products; not sure about MB.

To me, the LED blinkers are purely idiotic. The afterglow from an
incandescent bulb increases the chances that you will notice a blinker vs.
light that is instantly absent as the flasher cycles. And I don't buy the
argument that there are any significant energy savings to be had in such an
application.

I can. It's your correction.

Peception of halos is due to the image not being in focus on your retina.
Yes, cured by a new prescription.

Strobing perception is more likely due to neurology - same as those who
can't look at a 60Hz CRT monitor without getting headaches. You can
see strobe effects some times when watching the wheels of cars going past
you while sitting at a stop light if you swing your eyes one way or the
other. I don't thinkglasses will have anything to do with perceiving the
strobe effect.

Flicker perception is highly variable. My main objection
is the instant-on/off nature more than any modulation
artifacts. Very jarring. And yes, overly bright on-axis,
overly dim off-axis, and hideously expensive when something
does go wrong. I think LED's might have a place in marker
lights, but not for the big lumen jobs.

Piffle.

The W204 comes with ordinary yellow bulbs in the rear turn lights or with
red LEDs if the lighting package is ordered. My C300 had the red rear LEDs
which I have changed to the Euro yellow LED versions because I know they are
more visible. I've seen all versions and the LEDs , red or yellow, are far
more visible under all conditions and are impossible to miss. Far safer and
the LED flasher rate is more rapid.

Nothing to do with energy saving, for crying out loud.

I *think* they (LEDs) are controlled by pulse width modulation. Which
means_they_strobe. Imperceptible to most maybe, but my eyes constantly move
when driving. The movement of my eyes makes the effect noticeable. And no, I do
not wear glasses when driving. Only for reading. The maturation process sucks.

That's why I don't do it. Getting _older_, however, seems
