Re: [MBZ] Fwd: I win! (on topic)
I made all four kids change a tire by themselves before I allowed them to "solo" in the car. Years later, two of them remembered and are self-sufficient, the other two call for help. I figure 50% is good enough. I made male offspring change tars, all, engines and whatnot. However #1 daughter got a pass because she was in Deutschland the year she turned 16. She had great grades before, and was scholarship material. On return, the Dumb SOB Ass'tant principal told her that being a foreign exchange student was the same as being a dropout. Even though the classes in Germany were much tougher without the language barrier, he refused to give her credit for the year. So she had to complete 3 years of HS in 2 years, and keep her grades in the stratosphere. Because of that, I gave her a pass on things like lawn mowing and learning to change tires before she soloed. I also gave her a pass on getting a HS job, because her potential to get scholarships was more valuable that the total she might earn in HS working at a menial job. She did that in college and after. She held a job for 7 years, and put up with crap I never would up with put. After she quit and moved South, the store closed. Seemed like they couldn't live without her. She did escape HS with very good grades in spite of the DSOBAP, so I am proud of her for that. She survived all the stupidity a major university can put out, and got her degree. She does well at whatever she tackles. 10 days ago she got certified as a Zumba instructor and Saturday she had her first class, an "open to the public" thing on the town green. It was a success. I was not surprised she was successful with the first class. Some of her "firsts" are still entertaining. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Flat spotted wheels
Some years ago I was cruising up RT 95 at 90+ mph and picked up a screw in a rear tire of my Dakota, fortunately it just slowly deflated but things were pretty squirrely for a while there, the back end wanted to break out but I managed to get it into a rest area. I got the spare down and installed (truck was maybe 5 years old at that point) and got back out on the highway. Turns out the spare was banana shaped from hanging under the truck for those years and was VERY hard to handle for the first couple miles, the rear end kept kicking sideways. So I headed up the shoulder at maybe 25mph. After a fashion things got a little better and I could go a little faster and on and on. I finally got up to maybe 60mph before finding an exit with a tire shop that shot a plug into the bad tire and reinstalled it. Fast forward to when I got my '83 240D back on the road after a year of sitting. At speeds faster than 60mph it would shudder like crazy! I never did figure out what was wrong with it. Dwight had given me a set of studded snow tires which I had installed and the problem went away completely. Could have been one tire out of balance I suppose but winter was coming on and I wanted the snows anyhow... -Curt Date: Mon, 24 Sep 2012 18:25:24 -0400 From: Max Dillon To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: [MBZ] Flat spotted wheels Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 How long do flat spotted wheels last? Re: [MBZ] 1985 Mercedes Benz. 380sl Roadster - $3500 (Dunes West)
regarding broken plastic guides, the usual symptom is noticeable chain slap on startup leading to a chunk of guide falling down into the crank sprocket and a jumped chain, hence bent valves and a no-run situation. There are two cures -- replace the guides periodically or do what another MB mechanic does -- cut off the small part that breaks off before installation. That way when the chain starts to wear badly as it always does in those cars, you get the slap and warning to change the chain but no chunk of guide falling into the sprocket. No bent valves that way so long as you check the chain stretch often enough. B-52 tires often get flat spots, especially when sitting for several days in cold climes such as Michigan UP. Start taxiing with such, and we'd lope up and down a bit while they were in sync; make some turns putting them out of sync, and we'd start shaking and rattling; they usually "rounded out" by the time we'd get to runway for some really serious wheel turning. Re: [MBZ] Flat spotted wheels
hi Max! going to guess you mean flat spotted tires, not wheels,... i'd suggest making sure the tires are at the proper operating temps and gradually get it up to speed and keep it at highways speeds for closer to an hour to get the tires up to full temp. depending on the tires, it might require heat cycling like this a few times, but barring the loss of any weights or anything else evil, that should do it. cheers! e On 24/Sep/12 15:25, Max Dillon wrote: How long do flat spotted wheels last? Re: [MBZ] 1985 Mercedes Benz. 380sl Roadster - $3500 (Dunes West)
If you buy it, be aware that the upper chain guides are prastic. They get brittle and break. I was so impressed that #1 daughter noticed a couple years ago when hers broke the left top guide. She got it home and parked it until I could get there and swap the chain and guides. A local shop was kind enough to loan me a homemade tool to roll in the new chain. It made the job so much easier! That engine is squeezed in there so tight. I can't imagine how they squeeze a 560 in there. But if you do buy it, be aware that sometime it will need new top end guides. There is an updated version Rusty has available. I did not get in all the guides I bought for the block, but the ones I left in were the traditional aluminum rails with coating and looked ok. The guides that fail are on the heads and are pretty easy to replace once you get the valve covers off. Unless the valve cover gaskets feel soft, figure on ordering valve cover gaskets with the guides. Dieselhead <126die...@gmail.com> wrote: All 85s were double row out of Stuttgart. Can't tell without taking a valve cover off, but should not be a problem, unless the engine has been swapped for an early version. Rust around fender lips, dogleg in front of rear wheel, behind headlights. Many were babied and not driven in salt. A lady that drove hers every day in chicago for 18 years had rust. most are not too bad. So, where are the common rust spots? Should have the conversion to double row timing chain, can that be determined looking through the oil fill? Might take 20-30 miles of highway driving. I'd not worry about it unless there is side to side movement over 1/4" indicating slipped belts. How long do flat spotted wheels last? [MBZ] SOLVING LOTS OF 123 PROBLEMS AT ONCE
FOLKS I haven't been really happy with how my 1982 300td has been running, shifting, shutting off, etc for quite a while, but the car has been soldiering on. Saturday, I took about a 3/32" drill bit and reamed out the holes in the vacuum fitting on the main vacuum line between the vacuum pump and the brake booster. Mine is the style with the plastic fitting with two nipples that supply most of the vacuum system. I just spun the bit in my fingers in the hole of the nipple. Anyway, after that, the car shifts perfectly with no more hard shift and miracle of miracles, it shuts down perfectly!! It's an amazing difference. This coupled with my tennessee replacement of the RR CV axle and cleaning and adjusting the injectors has taken 10 years off of my car. Saturday night i took a 31 mile trip out into a nearby rural county for a party (62 mile round trip). Even though i went and returned after dark, not a single deer did i see. It's either my old eyes or the hunters have them all spooked and hiding wherever they hide. So, the moral of the story is be sure you have sufficient vacuum before you mess with anything else!! thanks, xx rick Rick Hawkins www.javaphoto.com www.javacycles.com LETTERPRESSES FOR SALE www.ricktheprinter.com www.letterpressmachinery.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Then it boots and runs and the OS thinks it's in a metal box with it's own motherboard, drives, network cards, etc. This does mean you will need to install an OS on the guest, so you will need an install disk (or ISO image). -- Philip --- Can I download an image to a VirtualBox from a remote HD running Acronis?
