Believe it or not, I grew up directly across the street from Dr. Moore and did

he also had a Countach and a Trans Am that he stuck a 600hp engine in. I can
vouch that all his toys were well taken care of. He is partly responsible for my
love of all things automotive and for that, I owe him a hearty THANK YOU ! If I
didn’t already have a 500E in my garage, I would be begging for a kitchen pass

But as the article says,

As for the powertrain, we’ll have whatever Mercedes’ design
team is smoking. Individual electric motors power each wheel
 – not that far-fetched – but a “hydro-tech converter” fueled
by recycled water stored on the roof is transformed into
hydrogen, which powers the space-age G for a claimed 500 miles

So she will be able to drive it as a green vehicle and not need to
worry about emissions. Parking will be quite another thing, however.

[MBZ] OT -- a car for the boy

2012-11-29 Thread Rich Thomas
The boy, who is in medical school in DC, asserts that starting next
summer he will need some sort of basic urban transportation device to
get to his various off-site locations in which he will be doing medical
edumacashun kinds of things. I guess various hospitals in the DC area.
I still have his 300SD here but he says that is too much trouble and he
has no time or inclination to fool with it. IOW he need something that
is cheap, reliable, and will not cost a fortune (or effort) to maintain
in the DC area, nor likely be a target for miscreants. He asserted $5k
would buy something. [How he arrives at that figure, having no money of
his own to contribute at this point, is a mystery, but whatever...]

I am thinking of a basic cheap japmobile of some sort, but I suppose
anything would do. He has a bike, but going various distances night and
day, rain and shine, hot and cold, etc a car seems to be indicated.

So the challenge for y'all is to come up with some ideas for something
that would fit the bill. And if anyone has or knows of something that
might be available in 6 months or so that would comply with the
specifications, feel free to offer. I did not win the lottery drawing
last night, so I am a bit constrained on the budget for this adventure.

He needs the special synthetic hazard fluid that is rated for extended

lifetime factory load that was only used that one year due to
transient government regulations in place at the time, and not meant to
be serviced.

I would suggest a Ford Focus. You can get a good example from the mid to late
2000s in that range of dollars.

They are cheap to maintain, easy to fix when necessary, and economical to
operate.

I have two if them, a 2004 wagon and a 2005 sedan. The wagon has about 159,000
and the sedan around 175,000. Both have been relatively trouble free during my
ownership.

I thought the stuff that was NLA could be identified by a push-on-push-off

Don't the rocker type switches generally indicate that the vehicle is able to

If near the end, it might be wise to lease or buy a new small car.
You carry the cost for the first year or so and then he takes over.
I know most of us on the list are not true believers in new vehicle
purchases but it is probably the best way to almost guarantee he has no
issues.

My elder son moved 1300 miles away this past summer. He had been driving
a 2000 Nissan Maxima that his brother and I maintained for him. We were
afraid he would spend way more than the car was worth quite quickly if
he had to have every little problem addressed in garages so we
encouraged him to swap it for something newer. He chose, with no input
from me, a brand new Mazda 3. He is earning enough to cover the costs so
I could hardly argue, but I would likely have recommended a Honda Civic.

For me, I would agree that a Camry, Accord, Altima, Sentra, etc. would fit your

have problems that might not be that easy/cheap to maintain.

I would suggest a cheap $2000 American car. Really. An older Buick. ANY GM
car with the 3.8L V6. They would be cheap to maintain, cheap to own and even
cheaper to insure. OR, a Ford Taurus from about 2002 to 2006. They are
unbeatable for basic reliable transportation. There are zillions of them out
there, parts are cheap, lots of people work on them. I would hate driving one
because they are so boring, but they are good cheap transportation.

Agree with the Focus idea, we have an '02 and it has had only normal
maintenance needs and a few inexpensive repairs since we've owned it.
It's at about 160K miles now.

They are cheap to maintain, easy to fix when necessary, and economical to

I have two if them, a 2004 wagon and a 2005 sedan. The wagon has about
159,000 and the sedan around 175,000. Both have been relatively trouble free
 during my ownership.

Well the problem I believe is that the public transpo might not go to
the places he needs to go at the times he would need to go there, in a
safe and timely fashion. He actually has little interest in a car

that, mostly.

Best place to look for a low-mileage Buick is probably an estate sale,
unless the estate sale is happening because a geriatric driver crashed
his Buick.

Buick Century: named for the average age of its owners.

Speaking of which, I saw a car today with 245/30ZR20 tires on it. It
looked rather odd. The outer diameter was about what I have on our '95
E320, 205/55R16, and what would have been stock, 195/65R15
