I'd guess the accountants figured out they could save $0.13 per
car if they made the change.

Re: [MBZ] Fuel leak

2012-12-11 Thread Dieselhead
Suffered a massive fuel leak while driving from Columbia SC to
Charleston today. The fuel shut-off valve, built into the hollow
bolt on the main fuel filter, came apart on the road. Fuel was
pouring out, pressurized. I noticed the fuel gauge was dropping
rather quickly, then noticed the blue cloud rolling out the back.

Pulled off at the next gas station, patched as best I could, made it
another 30 miles before the patch gave out, patched again and made
it home.

Some knuckle head, not the present owner, removed the retaining pin
which would have prevented this. New valve, $129, is on the way
from Q.

Hood pad was pretty well fuel soaked, so I've scraped that off,
ordered one of those as well. Washing the car and the engine
compartment now.

Probably lost about fifteen gallons of diesel.

[MBZ] Fuel leak

Re: [MBZ] WAY OT: ASCO cable ?

2012-12-11 Thread John Reames
Actually, the output of the 5150 or 5110 is rs485 and labelled. The input side
that connects to the ATS control or the "SCI" port on the power manager is not
485; it is definitely TTL with the exception of the power pair (1=GND, 2=+24VDC)

It's not straight through (tried that!) either. I believe the +5V pins are
likely outputs and the others are likely inputs; I'm guessing a transmit, a
receive, a device present, a presence detect, and a pair of flow control.

The port is capable of ASCObus I, ASCObus II and MODbus, but runs at TTL levels.

I suspect there is less than $12 of parts (at Radio Shack prices!) in the
cable, but they figure that no one can either terminate a solder pot DE9
(usually incorrectly called a DB9!) or make crimps for a proper DE9.

Maybe the Suzuki dealer also sells Fords.

Maybe the people with the problematic Ford in the original post had a
mechanic they trusted who happened to work at the Suzuki dealer.

Maybe the Ford dealership doesn't sell Suzukis, but is owned by someone
named Suzuki (a very common Japanese family name, almost like "Smith" or
"Jones").

Maybe they had a coupon.

C'mon people, have some imagination ;)

[MBZ] WAY OT: ASCO cable ?

2012-12-11 Thread John Reames
A while back there was a brief mention of ATS's (auto transfer switches).

I'm wondering if anyone might have access to either an ASCO 4000,7000 or "power
manager" that uses the DE9 to connect to a "connectivity" module... Or at least
to the cable that goes between 'em.

If so, could you pop open the DE9 hoods and note the wiring? (Or take a picture)

8" DE9M->DE9F is better than $100. (And its not made by AudioQuest!)

I've been able to guess that its to carry power on pins 1 and 2, and TTL
everywhere else. (And they aren't straight through)

It looks like there are 3 lines held high (+5V), and 3 "floated" low (it starts
at about 0.1V and runs down to 0.01V), with one that's an additional (signal)
ground.

There aren't that many possibilities, so I will put a scope on the +5V lines
at startup and see if any of them look like they might be data lines...

Unfortunately, the devices are multilayer boards that are heavy on SMD's; one
of them has no externally visible signal traces...

Oh, the boards are heavily conformally coated which makes it hard to read the
chips... But maybe I need better light and a magnifying glass for my old eyes!

Anyhow, thanks in advance!

(Btw ASCO won't provide a wiring diagram)

They took it to Suzuki? Why would they do that? Suzuki is shutting down
all of their dealerships in the USA.

Sounds like someone was ignoring the light(well, the check engine light has
been on all along, it means nothing) on the drive home and destroyed the
engine.

Or, did they mis-diagnose altogether? Was it the heater core that was
leaking to begin with or something else? Was it a head gasket issue from
the outset? If the motor is locked up, one might think it ingested fluid
and hydrolocked. The check engine light would not come on for a leaking
heater core but if fluid was getting into a cylinder and causing a
mis-fire the computer would report a bad plug.
I think I would be inclined to get it out of there immediately and have
someone else have a look at it.

Then find a used engine and drop it in. Unless the truck is in wonderful
shape a 99 probably does not justify a new engine.

Sounds like it ought not to be a problem.
We had a Ford that ingested water due to a major rain storm a number of
years ago.
My son called me from a local McDonalds to tell me the car was blowing
pink guck like a strawberry milkshake out of the filler tube etc.

We drove it to a shop close by and had them change the filter and fluid.
No more problems and it never caused any long term harm.

So long as the transmission is not damaged by lack of oil.

I know many years ago, my father helped out a fellow with a 240D. A tranny line
cracked and was leaking. My father replaced or repaired the line in some manner
and the owner was able to drive it home from his cottage on Lake of the Woods
to Columbus Ohio.
However, he ended up replacing the transmission. I don't know what he did to it
or how much he drove it before my father worked on it.
So, keep your fingers crossed that this did not cause any other problems that
will show up later.

Hard telling, but in the page for the Mobil1 ATF it says very clearly
that no discounts or coupons are valid on it.

I suspect that Mobil doesn't want them selling it at a discount...

All of the other ATF I look at in the FLAPS are very vague about their
specs. This troubles me.

I may end up subsidizing the Mobil1 ATF purchase if I can't find
something suitable.

This is a starving college kid, so I want to try and keep his costs as
minimal as possible.

I just checked. Put a group 49 gold battery in my cart for $138, added coupon

Subject: [MBZ] OT Ford Truck problem

I have a friend who sent me the following email this morning:

"Okay, we have a pretty big problem and I need your help getting someone to
help. Forrest has a '99 Ford pickup and we took it to Suzuki last week
because it was leaking fluid. They told us it was the heater coil that
needed to be replaced. We had to pay $1,200.00!!?!?!?!? to get it fixed.
They finished it Friday and Saturday morning we went to pick it up. Mark
and Forrest drove it home and it started shaking and then died. They were
able to get it in front of our house. We had it towed in AGAIN to Suzuki
and they called Mark today and said that they checked the check engine light
and it said it had a blown gasket and the motor is locked up. More or less
it needs a new motor BTW, the check engine light was on the first time
we took it in. We believe that it was misdiagnosed. Mark has not talked to
them since this morning and the truck is still there and we're not sure what
to do."

To me it sounds like maybe they did the heater core and failed to fill it
back up with coolant or they filled it and it had lots of air in it and it
wasn't burped. But, that would mean they drove it while it was overheating.
Any thoughts?

In the thread I read there were some people saying the III would slip where

clean fluid and the transmission was worn, or because of the fluid itself.

Sounds like IID is the right stuff, if you can get it, but they were saying

but the IID is more forgiving.

You can get a lot of M1 ATF with the $40 Autozone coupon, by the way, if

Re: [MBZ] Failed Opacity Test

2012-12-11 Thread Bob Rentfro
See I have a project scheduled for each day off on this old thing.
Yesterday it was door seals. Next day off it's going to be valve
adjustment. The day after that is probably going to be shocks. Etcetera
etcetera.
It's just kind of annoying. I've taken cars for opacity tests over the last
30 years and none of them have failed. This 1 wasn't even close to failing
as far as the amount of smoking this coming out the tailpipe. It just bugs
me when people can't do their job correctly.

MBWorld seems convinced that it should be IID or IIE, and that MBUSA will
sell you III. So take that for what it's worth.

Looking at the symptoms of folks who have used III I wonder if the shop
replaced the transmission fluid in my 300D with the wrong stuff last time,
and that's why I was having all that slip trouble. Guess it's time to DIY
it again, it was just meant to be a temporary change to get the mud out
anyway.

Best,

Re: [MBZ] Failed Opacity Test

2012-12-11 Thread Bob Rentfro
That's the trouble when you buy the $800 beater...you know none of these
things until you check. It is not smoking at all. I talked yesterday to my
indy and he said that lately he's heard stories from other older diesel
owners having issues with failing opacity. They are finding out it's
because the knowledge of how to use them correctly and keep them up is
almost nonexistent among the kids that work in the emissions stations.
I'm going to drive like a wild man this week, run a can of diesel purge
through, get a tank of biodiesel and then try a know good emissions station
downtown where indy says they know what they are doing.

[MBZ] ATF

2012-12-11 Thread Dan Penoff
Dexron-II is the correct stuff for a 300E (1992) slushbox, right?

I don't have access to my service stuff right now, and all of my previous cars
I have put Mobil1 in, so it's never been an issue in the past.

TIA,

Dan

Re: [MBZ] 300SDL vibration

2012-12-11 Thread Mitch Haley

I do have a Benz diesel question. My 87 300sdl has become quite loud at idle,
not an exhaust noise, more of the engine vibrations being transferred to the
body it appears to be running smoothly in spite of the tach not working, could
this be a failed motor mount? The engine does not lift when I engage forward or
reverse gears. Ideas anyone? Thanks again Ron Courcy

Could be.

Mitch.
