Court to Hear Fort Hood Suspect's Shaving Appeal
 Oct 03, 2012

FORT HOOD, Texas - A military appeals court wants to hear oral arguments
before deciding if the Army psychiatrist charged in the Fort Hood shooting
rampage can be forcibly shaved before his murder trial.

Fort Hood released the decision late Tuesday from the Army Court of
 Criminal Appeals.

Maj. Nidal Hasan says he grew a beard because his Muslim faith requires it,
despite the Army's ban on beards.

He is appealing the trial judge's order that he be forcibly shaved, which
his attorneys say violates his right to practice his religion without
 substantial government intrusion.

The appeals court, which is on Fort Belvoir in northern Virginia, will hear
from prosecutors and defense attorneys Oct. 11.

Hasan faces the death penalty if convicted in the 2009 shootings that
killed 13 people at the Texas post.

I've got a Rockwell (aka Delta), and ended up putting a new top wheel tilt

I also shimmed out the upper wheel to bring it into alignment.

The lower wheel was warped, but a dial gauge to measure runout and a large C
clamp to judiciously apply pressure to tweak it seems to have largely cured
things.

(Next up, something in the 2hp range and some browning cast iron bushing type

[MBZ] Flashers, etc.

2012-12-21 Thread Jim Cathey

The Frankenheap (200D 115 Euro) has _always_ had trouble with
its turn signals 'sticking'. Like the proverbial cat at the
door, I wanna come in, I wanna go out, they would either
flash or not at their whim. Usually grabbing he flasher
knob (red-dot pull knob on console) and cycling it a bunch
would bias it towards working, but you never could tell.
I've opened it and cleaned the contacts several times over
the years, and resoldered the PCB. It helped, but pretty
much at least once a week the lights would stick on anyway.
I've done a _bunch_ of flashing by hand using the stalk,
which is annoying but at least is possible.

Anyway, since the last time I operated I'd gotten some
Caig Deoxit, which I had used to miraculous effect elsewhere,
but I was out of it. (I'd bought it at Radio Shack, it
was a 2-pack of tiny spray cans, one the usual 5% product
and one for Gold contacts.) The Gold product only has
a tiny fraction of the ability to clean and protect non-gold
contacts that the regular has, but I used it anyway as it
was all that was left.

I did not want to purchase that particular package again,
as too small and 50% something I didn't want anyway, so
I mail-ordered generous supplies of the good stuff:
a large spray can of the 5% solution, a needle drip
applicator of the 100%, and a spray can of fader cleaner,
for use on scratchy radios, dimmers, etc.

_Anyway_, the flasher is inside the knob/switch, and is
oddly constructed: the knob is attached to the PCB and
pulls it back and forth. There is a row of eight or so
copper contact patches at one edge, and a bunch of springy
contact fingers that ride on them, and which are connected
to the external pins of the switch. The spring contacts
look normal, but the copper patches are just raw copper
and oxidize quickly.

No amount of cleaning or burnishing would last for all that
long. I'd used regular contact cleaner the first time.
It lasted a little while. Then again, but with burnishing
of the copper and protective grease. It worked, for awhile.

This time I shot it with the Gold spray. It is now working
perfectly again, probably better than it ever has for me.
If it should go out again I am now armed with a lifetime
supply of the good stuff. (Needle applicator, for switches
that are opened up. The spray is for quick jobs, and which
I will no doubt exhaust long before the bottle.)

The Caig stuff works, the dome light in the Frankenheap is
now reliable, from both doors and the overhead switch, and
has been for years. (I think the driver's door switch might
need another shot, as once in awhile now you might need to
jiggle it to get the light on.)

 Folks

I drove my 82 300td to asheville, nc from athens, ga, yesterday. I
dragged a trailer and hauled a 1000 lb letterpress down the mountain back
 to athens.

I saw temps down inth the 30's up there and the daytime highs were nice
 at about 70f.

Only problem seems to be a coolant leak at the thermostat and that short
 big hose

i have one and must change it

According to Airbus's Middle East President Habib Fekih the prince can

long

the customisation will take.

As the largest stakeholder in News Corp outside the Murdoch Family,
Prince

following the phone tapping scandal.
Looking relaxed in a pair of shorts and sunglasses he famously
declared that

News Corp's then chief executive Rebekah Brooks 'has to go', which many
believe effectively ended Brooks's career at the company.
A spokesman for Design Q, the Worcestershire-based company who will be
carrying out the customisation of the plane, told the Independent the
plane

Re: [MBZ] Ft Hood

2012-12-21 Thread G Mann
At any other time in history, this POS would have been given a summary
courts martial and shot the following morning by duly appointed [by the
commander in charge] firing squad.

We are at war [review the facts, if you can't make that decision]. Wartime
rules dictate such attacks are dealt with promptly and with death, the
method and timing at the discretion of the commanding officer at capture of
the offending criminal.

Had this happened, for example, in WW2, just how long would his beard be?
Answer, as long as it would grow before the sunrise firing squad the day
following the attack.

We are now some years into this trial phase and stupidly arguing over if he
can make a statement to his fellow muslim terrorist by forcing the issue of
a beard.. so when he is put to death he can be treated as a shehad [died
while furthering the cause of allah] and thus go to muslim heaven.. thus
rewarded.

Question is: Why do we play these stupid games. Coat his worthless ass
with pig fat and shoot him with bullets dipped in pig blood to make an
example. Then, since he is a terrorist and we should fight to win, run him
through a wood chipper and feed the mush to pigs [as an example to all
islamic terrorist] so his LAST act on earth is to pass through a pigs ass.
Send a message such acts will not be tolerated, fight to win , finally.

Pissed, gonna stay that way, over this POS.

Would this mean that a million gallons was treated or one tank for test

And when they say it is likely it looks like a WAG with no explanation.

Court Marshall/marshal/martial?

If he/she is convicted via a court-martial and sentenced to extended prison
time, I think it's usually Leavenworth for long-termers. A short sentence
could be in a more local brig. I don't know, cause I've never had the

Re: [MBZ] Muslim killer

2012-12-21 Thread Dan Penoff
I have worked at Leavenworth as a government contractor. The prisons, that is,
not just the base. No direct contact with the inmates, other than a couple of
trustys.

Having a point of reference using both state and Federal facilities, I can
assure you that death would be considered a welcome alternative. Military
prisons are very, very unpleasant places compared to state or Federally run
facilities, in my opinion.

The MJRCF is the nice military prison on site. The nasty military prison is
the USDB, where the lifers are kept along with high-risk prisoners awaiting
court martial. I was told that the USDB is only used for prisoners with
lengthy sentences and commissioned officers along with prisoners sentenced to
death. There is also a Federal facility nearby, but I had never been there
other than passing by.

The USDB is now a Supermax facility, I believe, similar to the one in
Colorado which I was also privileged to work at, if you want to call it that.
It was rather nasty when I was there, which was prior to the remodel that
brought it up to Supermax standards. When I was there in the 90s it was
relatively unchanged from the original design, which was done in the 1920s, I
think.

Probably, but I doubt it, since neither she nor her family run in the rarified

You may have cooked the thermostat -- check to make sure you have
circulation in the radiator. If the thermostat is stuck part way
open, it can overheat. Ditto if the flap on the back that closes the
engine recirculation passage is damaged (which sometimes happens when
it's overheated).

After much farting around we're back on the road. When it wouldn't burp the
issue was not enough water. Once it was full up we were okay.
I stopped at a Mobil station for more water they also had clamps so I replaced
that. Stupid car wouldn't burp again. Finally we drove around shutting the car
off as it got hot and it got better. Headed south and it was okay, turned
around to head north and the temp went back up!
Turned south again and it was fine. Seems to do better on the highway than
around town. Is that a sign of a toasted head gasket?

Anyway we're doing dinner at Cracker Barrel hopefully we'll be good for home,
about 55 miles.

Thanks Fred, I'm glad to hear it.

Any breakdown you can drive home from is not that bad a breakdown. So almost 7
hours after leaving home we're back, we got all the way to north Haverhill,
about 150 miles round trip.

Couple interesting things on the ride home, we're definitely down on power,
hills we could accelerate up before we just held on, hills we held on before we
slow down on now, hills we slowed down on before we had to shift into 3rd on.

After dinner I thought we were home and dry but as we pulled onto the highway
the temp gauge started climbing again, I cranked the heat in the car and we got
some LOUD gurgling in the area of the heater core, when the gurgling stopped
the temp gauge dropped, it did that exactly the same as we started south.

Finally as we slowed down to come through town here I could here some valve
clatter. You know that valve noise when you haven't changed the oil often
enough? This car has been doing that first thing in the morning anyway but it
went away as the car warmed up but just now it was doing it ever so slightly
all the time.

Anyway I put the block heater on for tonight so the engine won't freeze with
mostly water in it, tomorrow I'll drain the water out. I don't intend to put
any coolant in since it'll have to come out for the headgasket anyway. I'll
have it towed to my Indy next week.

No, and she, indeed, wouldn't have one. Oh, 'just remembered, I DO have a
Crossman pellet gun; used it few times maybe 8 or 10 years ago to shoot
pigeons way up on the edge of the house gutters or up on the
widow's/captain's walk rail. I'd come walking back in the house after
dispatching a pigeon, and SWMBO'd say, How can you hit anything with your
hands shaking like they do? My reply, Don't shake with the gun up against
a tree on touching the brick wall. For what you're talking about, I doubt
that a pellet gun counts.

the leak looks to be where the thermostat goes in, so i'll likely just
change that

i replaced the big hose a few years ago with a good used on
because i had it, not because i was being cheap

mine had only failed because i had a leaking sls hose that dumped
precious citroen fluid one the thermostat area
