Re: [MBZ] Another piece of good news
Curt Raymond wrote: Again as with yesterday the car fired right up, its maybe 25F, and idled fine with merely a small worrying tick somewhere in the valve train. **snip** The worrying tick goes away at low speeds but comes back above about 2500rpm but other than that the car seems to have proper power and if anything the throttle responds a little better than it did before. Is it possible that massively overheating didn't hurt much of anything? Yup. Those iron block, iron head engines are tough. Watch for water in the oil, oil in the water, white foam in the oil breather. But you might be fine. So my plan tomorrow is to go buy two more gallons of Mobil 1 15w50 (which is what I was running anyway) and change the oil. If the worrying tick remains I'll add Lucas oil additive (which is just viscosity improver) until the noise goes away. Years ago my cousin let his sister drive his Ford LTD (the horrible little one) while he was away at college, she never added oil and the engine ticked like crazy. He changed the oil and put in 2 quarts of STP until it quit making noise and drove it for years like that... Err, not applicable. The Ford would have had hydraulic lifters. The OM616 does not. Valve ticking on an engine with hydraulic lifters can indicate the self-adjusting mechanism isn't doing it's job and thicker oil can help that problem. With solid lifters like your 240 has, it can't do the same thing. Like Mitch said, maybe it's time to check valve lash. Yeah, I know - fun job in the snow. It's supposed to be done with a cold, cold engine - but if it were me, I'd probably run the block heater to warm the engine and help alleviate cold fingers. Just set the lash a bit tighter. -- Philip ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Car-part does have some $600-$700 engines, I was considering a newer, higher performance engine, didn't they change in '83 to have more power? '81, I think. I could at least get one with new type pencil plugs. I've got pencil plugs in this one but I'm not sure the retrofit type are as good as an engine designed for pencil plugs. My odd-ball '81 that seems to be a mix of the old and new came with parallel glow plugs. My retrofit in the '78 seem to do just as well as the later ones. The guy that did my 1979 300TD did lead. He was a third generation German coach builder (his great-grandfather built and repaired carriages and coaches) who was an absolute artist. No lead on the 300TD, as we used all new metal, but I got to watch him do some on another car one day when I was visiting. Sadly, he's gone as is his shop. If you can access both sides of the panel then lead is nice. Downsides are that the heat burns away the protective coating on back side of panel. i have seen plenty of hard drives fail SMART tests but work completely fine. sometimes it is just a matter of what testing they support. i have not seen a bad hard drive make the computer shut off. i would be looking at failed/failing components such as motherboard and daughter cards including the connections between them that may support charging, etc. since you have 2 of these you could try replacing parts from one to the other, but the risk is that you'll end up damaging the good one. personally i would just junk the one that doesn't work unless you have a support contract. It's not as secure, but you can have each browser remember the login for a given account so you don't have to login to each every time. I have over 16 different browsers (all free) in one tab that I use for testing web apps. Each could go directly to the inbox of its own mail account. [MBZ] Olympia portable typewriter
Folks, Our 18 year old daughter who drived a 1984 300D turbo (mercedes content) oddly asked for a typewriter for Christmas. I had a number of them and accidently gave her a Remington portable that has a french keyboard layout. It works fairly well but is pretty useless with the AZERTY key layout for most of us. So, it's up on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=200870328999ssPageName=ADME:L:LCA:US:1123 I also snagged her this beautiful Olympia (SM-9 model i think, perhaps also called Monica) on ebay before Christmas, but it didn't arrive until boxing day, today. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Olympia-International-Manual-Typewriter-with-Case-/221166298904?_trksid=p2047675.l2557ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:ITnma=truesi=L9t6IOSwhvhV%2BGGCc5x9CqwtGDY%3Dorig_cvip=truert=nc The made in Western Germany Olympia is probably from about 1969 and REALLY performs perfectly, but she hates it! It has a cursive script font. I did some cleaning and lubrication on it and everything works. I guess it'll go back on ebay for about $100 or perhaps even more. If they work well, nice typewriters seem to command pretty high prices, now, on ebay. I guess i'm in the market for another Olympia with a more conventional type font. She is happily typing away on it now. I wonder how long it will remain interesting to her. Re: [MBZ] hardware testing
Sounds like an intermittent problem in the motherboard. You might try a fan blowing right on the MB to see if that prevents the problem. Of so, it's something thermal and you'll probably play hell finding it. I had similar symptoms with two PCs that were fixed by new motherboards from online surplus places. On the other hand, maybe you'll be lucky and spot a fractured solder joint that opens when hot. Scott -Original Message- From: Mercedes [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Kaleb C.
