Dan is exactly right. You must have a national registry before you can
control guns. Concerns: (1) What are the odds it will be error free?
Suppose someone fat fingers your serial number or the spelling of your name?
If there are meaningful penalties, you go to jail. (2) How do you enforce
this without unreasonable search and seizure? (3) This is exactly how the
civilian gun elimination programs began in relatively benign places like
England and Australia as well as less benign ones like Hitler's Germany and
Stalin's Russia.

Everyone knows that such gun controls cannot achieve the stated purpose
(prevent crime). So advocates are either stupid or lying, because they have
a different goal: power shift from the people to the government.

Now, we have a government that can't balance a budget and usually can't even
enact a budget into law (one of their few mandatory constitutional duties).
And that's just for starters. We have "leaders" who value their theories
and prejudices above the law and the Constitution. So how much power do we
really want to trust to them?

124K miles for $2150 seems a reasonable value of those listed with
prices.May be a better deal if you call the ones that don't list

Well, which of the original ten amendments to the constitution give
you a "right" to drive a car? Driving is a privilege, and should be
licensed.

A better analogy would use the first amendment. All journalists,
reporters, editors, actors, directors, musicians, broadcasters etc.
who produce any written works, music, video, or live performances,
must be licensed and regulated by the state, and registered in the
federal database.

Any "free speech" must comply with current federal, state, and local
law. Slander is illegal, as is yelling "fire" in a crowded theater.
Threatening any government official is also not allowed.

Only those properly permitted and current on their "free speech"
fees may communicate with their elected representatives. Violations
may result in loss of "free speech", fines, and imprisonment. Want
to post to your blog? Need a permit for that. Put a sign up on
your property? Show us your license for that. Purchase a computer
or get a smartphone? Need to be registered, get a background check,
pay a fee, pass a test to make sure you know the law...

So, you still have "free speech", right? No infringement there?

First requirement to become a liberal is denial, which includes owning
guilt for acts which are caused by the liberal. The required liberal

Most conveniently, liberals can then be "without guilt", since "it's not my

[MBZ] Bomber captured alive

2013-04-19 Thread Gerry Archer
02.52 (21.52) We're getting a bit more detail about how tonight went down:
a man in Watertown decided to flaunt the police orders to stay indoor and
walked out to his yard, where he noticed blood on his boat. He walked up
to it and removed the tarp, to find a man covered in blood lying inside.
He ran back and called the police.
Authorities surrounded the boat and exchanged gunfire for around an hour.
Police tried to open negotiations but he was apparently not communicating.
An FBI SWAT team eventually stormed the boat and took him alive. It sounds
like the suspect is very seriously injured, potentially having gone nearly
24 hours without his wounds being treated.

and said in a very sexy voice "I'm a big believer in barter, and wonder if you

2013-04-19 Thread Jim Cathey

Amnd 1 is all about protecting your intellectual freedom, and
ability to discuss governmental changes. Amnd 2 is all about
protecting your physical freedom, and your ability to defend
yourself against criminals --- _including_ against a criminal
government, whether foreign or domestic. All as intended by
those smart guys who spent quite a bit of time thinking about
this stuff, and had plenty of training in the history of good
(and ill) intentions vs reality. Most of those suggesting
'modern' changes to these aren't intellectually qualified to
even empty the night jars of our founders.

Outside. Looks not so good, but is likely to feel better.

What type of glue would you use to replace it???

That's a thermally extreme environment, do not use lame glues.
Personally I'd reach for either Shoe Goo, or preferably JB Weld if
that would work. (Color, etc.) Cyanacrylate glues don't tend to
hold up long-term.

Not so. The only records are kept locally by the individual gun dealer. By

I am trying to think this out logically, without any sort of political or
personal aspects.

I would agree. Just like having a driver's license, for example, why would
establishing a database of guns be unconstitutional? Sure, the government
knows you have them, but if you bought them legally, they already know you
have them, correct?

And yes, as with establishing any database of existing items, it will take
some time for everything to be collected/entered, and there will always be
some outside of the database. It will take time, but with the full
cooperation of owners and manufacturers it's certainly a realistic approach.

I can see where some people might be concerned that the government might
attempt to use its powers to confiscate or somehow control gun ownership
using this data, but I fail to see this being a valid argument. We would
have to be in a martial law or serious domestic situation for this to
happen, and even at that, it's likely the populace would rise up in
opposition if it was attempted.

Isn't that the way it is in other countries, such as Canada and Australia?"

I pulled my '84 190D 70-80 miles at 60-65mph with my Ranger on a tow dolly no

Its not 2.2TB for the 4 minute file though the 2.2TB is the RAW files converted
into Quicktime files you can actually edit. There is no such thing as editing
the RAW 4K file, there has to be some conversion, in this case DPX and we can
see they've already given up 2 bits of color in dropping to 10bit, well
maybe... Another hassle with all HD formats is that there is no "standard" as
such, so theres 12bit, 10bit, 8bit. 24fps, 23.976, 23.98, 25 30, 29.97, 60,
59.97, 2K, 4K, 5K (which is kind of a joke) and 8K, 1080, 720 and good old
NTSC/ATSC/NTSC-J/PAL/SECAM...

We worked in 4K 10bit DPX for our conform (37MB/frame @ 24fps =
888MB/sec). We have 3TB+ of footage data for the whole project: Phantom
Flex4K Cine (RAW) files are ~700GB and 4k 10bit DPX conversions are
2.2TB for a project that is less than 4 minutes in its final edit. These
files made the 1080P ProRes444 QT's we use for editorial seem tiny! We
had less than a 7:1 shooting ratio for the live action elements, and
executed most of the shots in only 1 take.
"

At 2.2TB for a 4 minute file, I'd venture a guess that the aren't
working with compression until the Vimeo upload.

Re: [MBZ] 4k 1000 FPS Camera

2013-04-19 Thread Curt Raymond
24p is the framerate, the original references 1000 FPS, 24p is 24FPS, the P is
for progressive which is to say every frame is completely drawn unlike normal
TV which is interlaced.

4K is 3840×2160, compared to 1080 which is 1920x1080 or SD which is 720x486.
Color is 12bit, most SD and much HD is 8bit, some is 10. 4K and its cousins 2K
and 8K are considered "Ultra High Definition". In the television industry
they're considered a bit of a joke as its usually self important douchebags
that are saying things like "The Real Housewives is gonna shoot in 8K next
season for sure!" and then telling you how 3D is the best thing ever.

So what is 4k? 4096 what? It certainly cannot be 1024x4

I presume 24p is 24 bit (3 byte) color.

IT was fully harvested, but not by me. I sat on her for months on end and
finally SWMBA read me the riot act, as it was sitting in the middle of the
drive, blocking her access to the garage and autumn was coming on. I had been
in the process of head gasket replacement when we found out the engine was
scrap anymore. I thought I could source a fine used engine, but that came to
naught. No plan for a replacement car at that point, so I put it up on CL for
the vultures to take what they needed at overly liberal prices. Tried to empty
the parts bins as well, but I have too many parts and nobody wanted those as
much as they wanted what was on the car and looked new and good. Front end was
given a new home in three or four other cars, from a R107 to both diesel and
vergasser 114/115. Refinished Bundts went to the SL as well.

About the only thing the crusher got was the dead engine, body and some
interior parts. A pity nobody took the glass. Body was really straight but
ugly as sin with the paint flaking away. Oh, and the crusher took the blower,
which not a soul what brave enough to save. Good blower motor too.

These are the emails about which Dan asked us to inform him.

It seems one gets them when one replies directly to one of his emails. I
have gotten five from my reply earlier this afternoon and have forwarded
him the details.

My guess from postoffice.home having a non-routable address [10.0.0.1] is
that it is something Dan's running, but I haven't heard back from him yet.

Tell us about duco cement.

This is a challenging repair due to the heat cycles in the life of an

Re: [MBZ] (SPAM?) Re: Solar Tree for charging EVs

2013-04-19 Thread Randy Bennell

Maybe, if one waits too long but more likely it just becomes an
expensive repair.

The condos across the way from my office have a sort of garden area in
the middle with the condo units around the outside ring.
The garden area is raised up one level and the parking garage is under
it all.

There are trees planted on the top of the garage and now they have
determined that the roof of the garage needs to be rebuilt at least in
part due to the tree roots etc.
I don't know all of the details but I have a client who lives in one of
the condos and he says it is going to cost each of the unit owners
something in the range of $15 to $20K as a special assessment.

Beware of older condos - around here in any event. We are hearing that a
lot of them need work and the contingency fund that they have built up
over the years is not adequate.

Not sure how solar power and green roofs can coexist, or which one is more
beneficial. I'd lean toward the green roof, since solar power is limited
in the amount of power it can provide per square foot.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Down in Flames!

2013-04-19 Thread Dan Penoff
I fear this is going a bit afield, but I have a hard time relating the
ownership of a gun to the government having the capability to listen in to all
of the rooms of my home. Knowing I own a firearm hardly equates to
surveillance of my communications.

As for internet communications, I can assure you that there is no privacy
expectations. Based on the recent Homeland Security rulings our personal
privacy relative to electronic communications pretty much went out the
proverbial window. For that matter, I believe, based on personal experiences,
that this has been the case for longer than we choose to believe. As a
certified network security professional I can tell you that the level and
ability to monitor communications that exists in todays networks is staggering,
and can be easily accessed and abused, for that matter.

With this in mind, if I want to avoid sharing information, I know how to do it
and it's not terribly difficult to do.

You are a law abiding, responsible citizen, with nothing to hide, right?

Would you have a problem with the powers that be having active phone taps

Well, which of the original ten amendments to the constitution give you a
"right" to drive a car? Driving is a privilege, and should be licensed.

A better analogy would use the first amendment. All journalists, reporters,
editors, actors, directors, musicians, broadcasters etc. who produce any
written works, music, video, or live performances, must be licensed and
regulated by the state, and registered in the federal database.

Any "free speech" must comply with current federal, state, and local law.
Slander is illegal, as is yelling "fire" in a crowded theater. Threatening
any government official is also not allowed.

Only those properly permitted and current on their "free speech" fees may
communicate with their elected representatives. Violations may result in
loss of "free speech", fines, and imprisonment. Want to post to your blog?
Need a permit for that. Put a sign up on your property? Show us your
license for that. Purchase a computer or get a smartphone? Need to be
registered, get a background check, pay a fee, pass a test to make sure you
know the law...

So, you still have "free speech", right? No infringement there?

The manual for my 76 300D says it can be towed for up to 75 miles at no
faster than 30MPH with the rear wheels on the ground and the shifter in
Neutral.
It also recommends removal of the drive shaft if it is to be moved much

The simple answer, is that you cover the outside of the car with the
photo cells. I went to look at a bunch of solar cars that compete in a

Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT: Down in Flames!

Most conveniently, liberals can then be "without guilt", since "it's not my

Chicago is among the top (if not the top) cities with green roofs.

and

Not sure how solar power and green roofs can coexist, or which one is
more beneficial. I'd lean toward the green roof, since solar power is
limited in the amount of power it can provide per square foot.

We worked in 4K 10bit DPX for our conform (37MB/frame @ 24fps =

Flex4K Cine (RAW) files are ~700GB and 4k 10bit DPX conversions are
2.2TB for a project that is less than 4 minutes in its final edit. These
files made the 1080P ProRes444 QT's we use for editorial seem tiny! We
had less than a 7:1 shooting ratio for the live action elements, and
executed most of the shots in only 1 take.

"

At 2.2TB for a 4 minute file, I'd venture a guess that the aren't
working with compression until the Vimeo upload.

around 13.5MB/frame, at 1,000fps thats 13,500MB/s which would require extremely
esoteric storage so either theres some interesting post-processing going on or
theres compression. I'll go with the latter, probably lots of it.

When it gets to your TV your cable provide has cut the resolution to 1/2 and
the data rate to 6Mb/s (again pay attention to case, thats megaBITS) so the
compression artifacting ruins the image.

90% of what you watch on television today isn't even really HD, your local news
is probably DV25 16:9. That of course depends on where you are...

That footage looks cool but don't confuse a technology demo with what you'll
ever really see. besides the REALLY cool kids are doing 8k.

Oh, if you're into "The Deadliest Catch" I was talking to one of the editors two weeks

These guys had been in the US since 2000 or 2001 according to their
uncle (who wishes them dead), one went to UMass Dartmouth. No one
apparently saw this coming, thought they were nice regular guys. One of
them was recently posting stuff about following Allah or something. You

Chilling pics here of one of them standing next to little boy who was

Not Tea Party anti-tax 2nd amendment protesters, media trying to come to
grips with that, although "automatic" weapons are involved, so that is
somewhat comforting.

BOSTON (CBS) -- The uncle of the two men suspected in the Boston
Marathon bombings

says they had lived together in Cambridge for about a decade.

WBZ-TV spoke with the suspects' uncle, Ruslan Tsarni.

Read: 2nd Uncle Of Bombing Suspects: 'Yesterday He Called Me'

*WATCH NOW:* WBZ-TV Live Coverage

Tsarni says Dzhokar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev immigrated to the United
States around 2000 or 2001, and have lived at the same Cambridge address
since that time.

According to Tsarni, Dzhokar completed high school in Cambridge and was
attending college somewhere outside of Boston.

Tsarni, who says he hasn't been in touch with the brothers since around
2009, tells WBZ-TV he believes that the brothers' parents may have moved
back to Russia.

He described Tamerlan as a "loser."

Tsarni was shocked when he was informed of the unfolding situation that
left Tamerlan Tsarnaev dead in a shootout.

"He deserved his. He absolutely deserved his," Tsarni said. "They do not
deserve to live on this earth."

DRT guy appears to have been a long-time resident of Cambridge, a
"regular guy."

We Americans seem to be allowing some real "quality" immigrants into our

The German family that fled to the USA to escape persecution for the crime of
home-schooling their kids got deported because their asylum claim was denied.
Somehow I think they would have been more productive citizens than our average
immigrants.

[MBZ] OT: Shoe Goo

2013-04-19 Thread Jim Cathey

I used shoe goo again yesterday. Unusually enough for me,
on _shoes_! Wife's rubber boot, not old at all, split down
the side. I roughed/cleaned up the area and used SG to
glue a patch of bicycle inner tube rubber over it. Not
all that pretty, but maybe will work. I'm surprised she
threw 'em to me, she of the "new or nothing", but perhaps
it was more in the nature of a bone she was throwing...
