Re: [MBZ] '91 350SDL bad news

2013-07-20 Thread Peter Frederick
The lower half of the IP is oiled by the engine oil system. If the
seals on the plungers fail, it's quite possible for fuel to get into
the oil, usually with bad results.

Cure is replacement or rebuild of IP.

I can agree it is not fish oil. That is no problem. I read the MSDS and

[MBZ] Michelin tire recall

2013-07-20 Thread Gerry Archer

Michelin announces voluntary recall of 100K tires

By CHRISTOPHER S. RUGABER
AP Business Writer
Michelin is voluntarily recalling 100,000 tires after a retailer discovered
that some had holes and quickly deflated.
The recall affects certain sizes of Michelin's LTX M/S 2, X Radial LT2 and
Latitude Tour tires. The tires are typically used on light trucks and SUVs.
The puncture, in the sidewall, was caused by machines used to handle the
finished tires. The tires were made in Michelin's Lexington, S.C. plant.
There have been no reports of damage, death or injury. Michelin says about
2,500 of the recalled tires may have the defect.
Customers who may have purchased the tires will be notified by mail
beginning next week. Customers who have already replaced the tires may be
reimbursed.

Well, it's a W116, so you know that it has a terminal case of rust and
the climate controls don't work, regardless of what the seller says.
And it's an OM617, so you know that it has been run hard and put away
wet, because everyone knows those engines run forever with no
maintenance.

Call me cynical, but I have just about stopped going to look at old
cars for the time being because of so many mendacious, malicious, or
just plain moronic sellers. I think the last straw was the guy with a
123 240D who told me on the phone that the heat and A/C in the car
worked just fine. When I got there, there was no belt on the A/C
compressor, and the heat was blowing full force all the time
regardless of the control settings--he told me that the way to control
the temperature was by opening and closing the dash vents.

Interesting. So do head gaskets fail suddenly rather than gradually in
the rodbender scenarios? Could the fact that you caught it early have
saved the engine from bending a rod? If I recall correctly the problem

They plug it from the INSIDE then put a patch over the plug, That will

The recall affects certain sizes of Michelin's LTX M/S 2, X Radial LT2 and

The puncture, in the sidewall, was caused by machines used to handle the

Very true! We all learned various OS's, Office Suites, etc and now we
get new software that has changed for no logical reason other than the
manufacturer wanted changes to justify a new product. I cold live with
MS Word of 1997 quite happily thank you, but MS keeps adding something
new called functionality - even though 90% of people never use that
stuff. Same for excel and Access, etc. I learned what I needed to do
my job and after that it was icing on the cake, IMO. i'm some can
justify bar and pie charts that can be fancier than we made in 97 -
although we managed to do all that was needed - yet we get more and more
changes - all with new commands we mus learn.

2013-07-20 Thread Curt Raymond
At least with Win8 I understand the concept, trying to unify the PC and tablet
platforms. Stupid idea but at least they had some kind of a plan.

I've been living full time on Puppy Linux for 5 days now and I'm very pleased
with it. Other than a few hiccups (I can't figure out how to import my Chrome
bookmarks into Chromium) I'm quite pleased with it. This is a work laptop that
is being replaced (the schedule advances now). I was planning on making this my
home PC to replace a big old clunky tower. I still plan on that but now it'll
be Puppy as the OS.
I'd given up on Linux because I couldn't find a distro that would reliably play
web video. As we watch all our TV online that was an absolute requirement.
Puppy seems to play everything fine. Amazon, Youtube, Hulu all seem to work,
this might be a winner.

I had planned on investing in an SSD for quick quiet boots but it works so well
off a USB drive I might just hang a 32GB key on it and use it that way keeping
the internal drive for storage.

chain mail from the right side would be True (but it doesn't mean as much as
the sender claims it does).

Re: [MBZ] (SPAM?) TCP/IP not working on WinXP computer

2013-07-20 Thread Peter Frederick
I think Microsoft is finally going to die from petrification, along
with Intel -- they used their (illegal) monopoly power to force us to
use bad software on lousy chips for too long, and neither company is
capable of responding to market forces (Intel has announced they want
to force people back onto PCs using superior x86 junk).

It took 30 years, but maybe, just maybe, we can get out from under
this crap. Everyone else always made better stuff than Microsoft, and
Intel became a brain-dead monopoly about the time the founder died --
no real significant research since then, just kept tarting up a dead-
end power hog design.

I'm greatly amused that NONE of the smart phones use anything from
Intel. Before long no laptop or PC will either, unless they get rid
of that ancient crap.

Re: [MBZ] WD40

2013-07-20 Thread Curt Raymond
*sigh*

The MSDS says:
Aliphatic Hydrocarbon 45-50%
Petroleum Base Oil 25%
LVP Aliphatic Hydrocarbon 12-18%

Carbon Dioxide 2-3% - which is probably the propellant
Other 10%

Snopes says:
Solvent, naptha petroleum, medium aliphatic 60%

Petroleum Base Oil 15-20%
Corrosion Inhibitor 1-10%
Wetting Agent 1-10%
Fragrance 0-1%
Carbon dioxide 2-3%

Now match the two lists up.
C02 agrees so thats out.
Fragrance and wetting agent are probably contained in other so we can kick
that out.
Petroleum base oil matches so kick that out too.
If you add Aliphatic Hydrocarbon and LVP Aliphatic Hydrocarbon together you
more or less get Solvent, naptha petroleum, medium aliphatic so we can remove
those too.

So the only one left is wetting agent which also probably lives in other.

So what exactly are you talking about?

I can agree it is not fish oil.  That is no problem.  I read the MSDS and
it does not agree with what Snopes said.  Simple.  Read it yourself.

I am also the one who posted the link from WD40 saying it is not fish oil
so I am not still arguing that point.

I think thats the lamest ass argument I've ever heard. If you had
something, ANYTHING that was reasonable I'd listen but this is the kind of
argument a little kid thats losing an argument badly makes.

Go camp out at the WD40 factory and catch a picture of a truck dripping a
little water. Claim the water smells like fish and I'll give you a little
 credence.

Open source is a nice gimmick but still remains catch-up to windows or

years. Is there any hint how new tech will look? Or will new tech
merely be inclusion of old tech in different packages as we have seen
for 35 years? Something completely out of the box like apple/DOS/pc

Re: [MBZ] kick down switch

2013-07-20 Thread Dieselhead
Question - the Kickdown switch under the acelerator pedal - how much
movement should it have? I tinkered with it and it only moved
about 1/16 of a inch. I expected 1/4 or so but I've never
had to work on one before... Comments??

BTW, having new grommets on the shift rod makes a huge difference
in the noise level and shift accuracy - even on a automatic..I
think the front grommet was hanging by a thread when I was trying to
fix the rear one. and it came off completely when I worked on the
rear.

speaking of installer errors - Sadlly, if the AT must come out again
Sun Valley will not pay the RR labor - $550 in my case.

Kickdown switch on the SDL moved maybe a quarter inch. You can test
continuity if you want. A sure test is to unplug it. See if that
makes any difference. I'd guess that your switch should move more.

No. Like I said, regardless of auto this or auto that, there is no excuse
for not monitoring attitude, airspeed and altitude, especially in critical
stages of flight, and, no matter how bad things may get (weather, SAM's,
SWMBO digging fingernails into inner thigh demanding to know, What is that
noise? etc.) you must continue to fly the airplane.

As noted by a 777 pilot, it's possible to set the equipment up to
disable both the autothrottle and autothrottle failure warning during
normal flight. This is a training issue, but also one of those
pitfalls that should be designed out to prevent someone using an
inappropriate mode at the wrong time.

If they were flying on autothrottle and it neither controlled the
speed nor warned them that the autothrottle was not engaged, there is
probably no way they could have made a normal landing -- by the time
the speed drops below landing speed it's way too late.

We will see. We have intact controls, intact computers, and a live
crew.

I'm hesitant to just blame the pilots at this point, no one EVERY
intentionally splatters a plane full of passengers, and someone who
has been flying 747's for decades isn't a dud pilot.

I think Microsoft is finally going to die from petrification, along
with Intel -- they used their (illegal) monopoly power to force us
to use bad software on lousy chips for too long, and neither company
is capable of responding to market forces (Intel has announced they
want to force people back onto PCs using superior x86 junk).

It took 30 years, but maybe, just maybe, we can get out from under
this crap. Everyone else always made better stuff than Microsoft,
and Intel became a brain-dead monopoly about the time the founder
died -- no real significant research since then, just kept tarting
up a dead-end power hog design.

I'm greatly amused that NONE of the smart phones use anything from
Intel. Before long no laptop or PC will either, unless they get rid
of that ancient crap.

Peter

Petrification or putrification?

The biggest failure of computing in the past 30 years is the
keyboard. It is a miserable HMI (human machine interface) Surely we
can do better.

The big problem with programmers is that they want to add/change crap
just because they can (because they are nearly always out of control)
The focus should be on making a better product and providing the
customer better value.

I plan to migrate biz computers to linux rather than any post XP

Can we be open to a perverse negative?
A perverse negative scenario stemming from viewing Children of Magenta
is... perhaps they were in the auto mode up until too late, at which
time they regained situational awareness and flew the airplane with
what they had, i.e. nothing. The auto mode may have destroyed the
entire plane, instead.
It occurred to me after watching the video that while the video shames
the auto mode addiction, perhaps the crew had in good time gotten off
the addiction and really did fly the plane with zero lift and zero
power, but they lifted the nose to avoid the wall, nixing the tail,
avoiding complete fireball and crash? Perhaps?
Actually... I know nothing... Stray thoughts occur from time to time
while I watch stuff.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Asiana

2013-07-20 Thread Peter Frederick
Well, the real point is was this a stupid pilot error or an error
the pilot made when he though he was doing something else, or
alternatively a training issue where the pilot did something he should
not have when he thought he was doing something else, and what he did
was what he was taught to do.

One does NOT land one of these things like one does a single engine
Cesna on a clear day with no wind, I suspect the only time they are
landed without autothrottle control is when something is wrong with
the aircraft. It's foolish to manually control the airspeed when the
autospeed does a better job anyway.

We will see, the NTSB generally does a superb job of accident
investigation, and what exactly happened will get ferreted out
eventually. Probably going to take some time, though.

This is similar to the AA DC-10 crash in Chicago back in the mid 70's
where the engine came off just after liftoff. The crew failed to
correct for the loss of lift on the affected wing due to leading edge
slat retraction upon hydraulic failure and the aircraft rolled over
and crashed. It was very easy to compensate for, all the crew had to
do was retract the slat on the other side to balance the lift, so you
could call that pilot error. However, since the power for the mis-
match slat extension warning was supplied only by the engine that
ripped off, there was no warning and the plane rolled over too far to
recover before the crew could fix it. They DID cotton on the the
problem, but only after it was too late to save the plane.

Was that pilot error? No, every single DC-10 pilot who flew the
accident on a simulator crashed the plane, every time. If the slat
mis-match warning was enabled, every single one flew it out with no
issues and landed safely.

Pilot error? Not really.

If the Asiana crew thought the autothrottle was set and working, as it
always was on landing a 777, and it did NOT control the speed as the
aircraft approached the set landing speed AND there was no audible or
visual warning that the speed was not being controlled by the
autothrottle, is that pilot error or a training/equipment problem?
There is, from what I've read, at least one flight mode where the
autothrottle is deactivated AND the speed warning/autothrottle failure
is ALSO deactivated (look up FLCH trapon the 777).

Remember, SFO ATC is well known for not giving final approach
clearance until the landing aircraft is past the inital flight slope
and too high, requiring some fancy flying to get the plane down to
glide slope and into stable approach conditions. The ALPA has been
complaining for decades, this is not a new problem.

So think this scenario: ATC doesn't give landing clearance until the
ASIANA flight is past the initial point on the glide slope. This is
against company rules, since it requires an un-stabilized approach,
but it's routine at SFO. It's also not a big problem, but to get down
to glide slope, it's necessary to idle way back on the engines and
descend a bit faster than normal. This is a computer operated plane,
you don't manually handle the throttles much, you select the speed you
want and the rate of descent. However, since you are over the glide
slope, you have to use some flight mode on the computer that lets you
do so, and in this case, if the crew selected FLCH (flight level
change) and did NOT realized that doing so deactivates the auto
throttle AND the auto throttle failed to engage -- speed too low
warning, we are in a situation where the crew expects the autothrottle
to control the speed and is NOT watching the rate of speed loss very
carefully, they are watching to make sure they achieve glide slope and
don't have to go around to avoid an over-run by landing too fast too
far down the runway.

During the last few seconds of the approach, the engines don't come
up, speed starts to drop below set landing speed, crew has to figure
out why (remember, they always use auto throttle speed control), and
oops, crash. By the time the failure of the engine power to come up
when expected gets processed by the crew and they ram the throttles
wide open, it's about 10 seconds too late to avoid the crash.
Throttle application on a 777 is timing critical, that bus descends
fast and takes a lot of thrust to stop a descent. By the time the
speed drops below selected landing speed you are at least 5, probably
10, seconds LATE on throttle application and there is absolutely
nothing that can be done to fix it, you are going to stall.

Obviously, the crew expected the speed to be automatically controlled,
and it was a very nasty surprise when it wasn't.

Now, where is the error? Is it stupid pilots who recklessly fail to
set the autothrottles? Is it improper training -- never use FLCH mode
to descend to glide slope (did anyone make sure the pilots knew FLCH
would leave them with NO
