No, but it can't cross a transformer. So typically this means one
_service_ - that is, it won't reach the neighbors.

Unless several houses share one transformer, like in our neighborhood.

Wireless is a _shared_ medium. CAT5, using the (now-common)
switch is _parallel_. Wherever possible I recommend wired
installations, for maximum reliability and speed. A can
converse with B, without impacting in the slightest C's
conversation with D. If you have your TV sucking up most
of your wifi bandwidth, is there any left for a laptop?
Is your TV feeding off of a stored program, not streaming?
Media server? Wouldn't affect the wifi at all then.

We have wired all our fixed devices, leaving the wifi
for the roving ones.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833704164

Prices go up from there.

Regarding the terminology. A "router" is a device that function as
a "gate keeper" between two separate networks - like the internet
and your in-the-house local network. It often has firewall
functions too.

An "ethernet switch" is effectively a "smart hub" and for none
administrators just know that a "switch" is better than a "hub" -
but hubs are now hard to find. This devise functions like a
telephone switchboard allowing all the devices plugged into it to
"talk" to each other.

A "wifi access point" is a device that links wifi and wired.

A very common device is a "wifi router" that is a combination of
router, ethernet switch, and wifi access point.

So - it seems you have a router in the office. This is the gate
keeper between your house and the outside world. It probably has 5
or so ethernet connections on it - 4 for inside, 1 for outside.
Maybe it has WIFI on it too.

For the living room to have internet access, you need to connect
the router. If
 * the office router has WIFI
 * the signal is strong enough
 * every living room device has WIFI

then you are all set. If not, (you don't want to trust the WIFI
signal), then you will need more equipment.

If the office has WIFI and it covers the living room well, then you
won't need another access point.

If you have multiple devices in the living room, then you probably
need an ethernet switch.

To connect the living room to the office, you need a CAT5 (or
greater) cable - or equivalent. If there is a practical cable
path, I would recommend CAT6 cable. Otherwise, one of those
ethernet-over-power-wires could work. Another option is a
"backwards" access point that will turn WIFI back into wired that
can be connected to the living room switch.

Attached is a quick sketch.

No, but it can't cross a transformer. So typically this means one
_service_ - that is, it won't reach the neighbors.

Re: [MBZ] 1984 300D Air conditioning

2013-08-27 Thread Jon Agne
What Rick said!

My system had been changed over (half-a** job) by the prior owner. R-134a was
in the system, the low pressure conx was 134, but the hi press conx was still
r-12. Go figure. I was never happy with the AC before the compressor died so
I decided to change back to R-12.. In the meantime, I learned about Enviro-safe
products. Use the Industrial ES-12. It really does make a difference, and
cools much better than the 134a or plain ES-12. The drawback is that it has to
be shipped as hazmat. I think it's worth it. R-12 is good also, but it's WAY
.

It appears that they call it r-134a replacement now. Understandable,
considering r12 hasn't been used in two decades now. It is the same as ES12.
You can email or call them for details.

The plastic connector that hooks the wiring harness to the alternator in the

If not, it looks like standard female spade connectors might work?

[MBZ] Wheel bearing fiasco.

2013-08-27 Thread dseretakis
While finally getting to my front brake job, I encountered a failing drivers
side wheel bearing. There was discoloration and shallow pitting on the outboard
race. BTW, how much longer would this bearing take to actually fail?
Needing the car back on the road I went to my local autozone and picked up a
set of timken front bearings, inboard and outboard. I paid $30 for the pair. I
happily took them back home only to discover that the outboard bearing was too
small!
I then traveled to my local MB dealership and picked up a front bearing kit. I
bargained them down by 20% and paid $117 for the kit from their full retail of
$147. I still overpaid but as I said I can't continue to have this car off the
road!
The outboard bearing was made in Germany, but sadly the inboard was made in
Japan. Also with the kit came a new grease seal, grease cap, radio interference
spring ( I needed one anyway) and spindle nut locking bolt.

Re: [MBZ] 1984 300D Air conditioning

2013-08-27 Thread Jon Agne
SorryI am late to this thread, but I just did all of this. My R-4 bit the
dust last November, so I put it off until the spring, and decided to use ES-12
as my refrigerant. Bought a new Behr (made by that same company in Dallas)
compressor from FCP Euro along with a new drier and expansion valve. I ran out
of time in late May, so I took it to my local INDY and had him remove all of
the aforementioned parts and do a compete flush. It worked great for three
weeks, and then the compressor imploded.

Compressor was replaced under warranty, and they even sent me another drier.
Another flush, and this time I used the Industrial ES-12. Followed the
directions, and I have had the BEST cooling for the best 2.5 months. I'm in
Atlanta now, and I feel great in my car.

Hope it all works out for you.

Jon

[MBZ] POTS (no opera content)

2013-08-27 Thread Rick Hawkins Java

Folks,

In athens georgia, i got DSL service probably 20 years ago right
downtown got it at home, about 8 blocks from the central office,
a few years later.

We still have an ATT landline with slowest DSL. Our ATT cell service
isn't particularly robust, especially in the summer when there are a
lot of leaves on the trees, altho we're a few blocks from the center
of the town.

My service is supposed to be something like 1.4 mbps but usually runs
about 1.2 during the daytime hours. I've made video calls all over the
world with ichat and skype for probably 15 years or more. It works
pretty well.

Last night i talked for an hour on an ipad, connected wirelessly to
the network (g router), using skype. I was not supplying video since
it was a first get ipad, but he was and the video was pretty solid.

Down on tybee island (by savannah) we have a house and the neighbor
who supplies me with internet wirelessly, just changed to uverse. It
is faster than the previous 8 mbps dsl BUT speed varies a lot and in
the month or so that he's had it, it's was out several times, for a
minute or for a day or so. I'm not sold on uverse.

I think they also gave him a UPS battery backup for the modem/router

thanks,

xx rick

They are running fiber optics. That should be the major cost and will be

Yes it is convenient, when you got kids you can't go without it, phones,
tablets, laptops, gaming consoles, even the printer, all on wi-fi.
The only things plugged into the net are my ancient desktop and the pay
TV, which is hooked up via net over power.
Speaking of this internet over power thing, not looked into it much but
doesn't it work on just the one power circuit?

Wifi is slow and unreliable compared to copper wire. But it can be
convenient. Wifi is typically faster than the connection to the
internet. But I do a lot of internal network stuff (LAN) and a
CAT5 cable is easily 10 to 100 times faster than wifi. When I'm
transferring a 10 Gbi file I like using copper wires.

2013-08-27 Thread OK Don
A few years ago when we were rolling out wireless connectivity across
Oklahoma, we found a couple of communities in the S.E. corner that did not
have POTS yet. They relied on CB radio to call from one ridge to the next
one, where someone would use thier POTS to make the call. I don't remember
if they had the radios hooked to the phones on the receiving end or not. No
cell service, no Internet, nada. THey did have a road and electricity,
which does beg the question of why there were no POTS lines, other than $.

Subject: [MBZ] OT power line ethernet

So on this discussion of this power line home ethernet deal, what I am
wanting to do is have a line from my upstairs office down to the main TV

Isn't this usually indicative of crud in the system from a dead compressor
killing the next one? Should flush the whole system, not just replace
parts. And put in a genuinely new compressor, not a rebuild.

Most of the ones listed on Newegg say 200 Mbps; some say 500 Mbps.

Anything you can stuff onto one Cat-5 cable you can put onto a
ethernet-over-powerline adapter. The individual devices put their traffic
on the cable simultaneously with different addresses; they don't care
what the transmission medium is.

So, yes, you can do what you want.

Absolutely.

Most of my house is wired with CAT6 but the back portion doesn't have
enough clearance in the attic for me to get to the interior walls. My
oldest son likes to game online and often bitched about his wireless
connection, despite being about 10 feet away from one of the access
points, so he bought one of the Ethernet over power setups.

One node plugs in to a receptacle right next to my core switch and the
other to a receptacle in his room. He claims it's faster but I
personally doubt it.

With our painting and moving and changing room functions around, I have
been thinking about using that option for my "new" office instead of
crawling up into our horrible attic and running Cat V cable.

There is a city in the northwest (Portland, or Seattle maybe?) that
at least used to provide citywide wifi internet access. The

Err, but you are the one that threw out the challenge. We now know
what you mean by city - but if we don't know what you mean by wifi,
how can we answer?

Wifi is "wireless ethernet". It simple replaces a CATx cable.
Wifi does not equal access to the internet. Internet access is
provided by some form of connection to an "internet service
provider" (ISP). Common methods of connection to an ISP are:
dialup, DSL, cableTV modem, satellite, radio (wifi, mesh, etc),
fiber optic.

So are you really asking, "Name me a city without broadband
internet access"?

Re: [MBZ] parts site?

2013-08-27 Thread Richard Hattaway
So why don't you put in a wireless router?  Only cat cable I have in my house
is the run from the cable modem to the wireless router.  Almost everything else
runs on wi-fi.

I say 'almost' because I do have a cell phone system that requires connection
to the internet, and it is hard wired to the router.  My server is also hard
wired, but only because the router sits on top of it.

Laptops, a desktop, all the pads, and my TV all run on wireless.

I thought this was more common than free long distance.  I guess that living in
the woods in Smallsbury, 65 miles from the nearest >250,000 'city' is not so
bad ??

Yes - but you spend money on the equipment - and being electronics
it has a much higher failure rate than copper wire.

So - save time and effort (over power) or money (CATx cable).  You
pick. *smiles*

Same here in the West Central Florida backwoods. DSL runs Youtube okay
except during peak hours when speed gets down to 700K. Would probably have
ditched the telephone service but for the "I'vefallenandIcan'tgetup" service
daughter wants me to have with a company that wants a copper wire
connection.

is a TV/Net cable running down the road right out in front of my driveway

There's a digital switch 1/2 mile from me, I think it's about a year old.

ATT's web site would sell me either UVERSE phone (overpriced VOIP) or POTS, only
TV offerings were from satellite.

UVERSE installer told me that POTS was legacy, and they weren't doing new
installs of POTS in my area. Next week when the POTS installer finally got here,
he told me that UVERSE phone and TV was only for areas with the faster UVERSE
service, mine is limited to ADSL2 at 3mb/second. Anyway, POTS gives me perfect
sound, works during a power failure, and I get unlimited local outgoing calls.
UVERSE would have given me VOIP quality and only something like 50 outgoing
calls for about the same price, but those 50 calls could be anywhere, not just
local.

A dreadful idea, especially with regard to radio noise.

Allegedly it wipes out GPS, and that's keeping it from implementation.

I have CenturyLink (was QWest) and can see how they would want to keep

It's not free, it's part of a package so you don't see the cost (or it's VOIP,

I've got long distance blocked on my land line, so I use Google Voice to make my

I gotta put in a plug for Puccini. For sheer beauty and drama, no opera
music beats Tosca. The ensemble with Scarpia at the end of Act I of Tosca
blows me away every time I listen. The love duet in Boheme Act I seemingly
lasts forever, but it's so glorious you never want it to end.

With our painting and moving and changing room functions around, I have
been thinking about using that option for my "new" office instead of
crawling up into our horrible attic and running Cat V cable.

2013-08-27 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Well now that I have uverse been watching some Netflix steaming and the DVD
player with Netflix is always dropping the wifi connection and random and
having to buffer a lot, other times it works fine. I have the uverse router
upstairs but I do no routing thru it, I have my net gear n router behind it and
it works fine except for to the cheap DVD player. So I was going to run a cat5
downstairs and either put my netgear router or a different router at the main
tv to hook DVD and sat box to instead of using wifi. May look into this power
line deal, don't think I have heard o that before

Re: [MBZ] parts site?

2013-08-27 Thread Dan Penoff
Absolutely.

Most of my house is wired with CAT6 but the back portion doesn't have enough
clearance in the attic for me to get to the interior walls. My oldest son likes
to game online and often bitched about his wireless connection, despite being
about 10 feet away from one of the access points, so he bought one of the
Ethernet over power setups.

One node plugs in to a receptacle right next to my core switch and the other to
a receptacle in his room. He claims it's faster but I personally doubt it.

I think his problem was with the crappy Verizon router dropping packets over
the wireless.

2013-08-27 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
I live way out in the country. The only option was a wireless radio network
service, sat, or dialup. I had the first one for many years only ran 1mb. Then
the trees grew up and signal dropped. Switched to exceed abuut a year ago, runs
12mb but I often beat that sometimes by quite a bit. Problem is it is
expensive, 139 a month for 25gb a month. Just last week uverse is now available
and I just had that installed Saturday. I got the 18mb plan but it usually runs
about 12, is much cheaper and seems faster because it does not have the
700-1000ms ping time like sat.

First, define "city".

Then, what do you mean by "city without wifi"? Public, free
internet access wifi? Or without someone with a wifi router? Or an
ISP providing internet access via wifi?

oh, man, if you live in monroe, you are just one town past atlanta
suburbs. hang on there as 80 meg fibre is probably just a few miles away!
i lived in snellville, 2 towns over (unless you count "between" as a town,
which it isn't, but it's just between) and i was on fibre years ago.

i'm sure old jakob will tell you his horse is more reliable than some fancy
motorcar as well!

and it was nice to communicate with you here in email

Re: [MBZ] parts site?

2013-08-27 Thread Dan Penoff
Ethernet can be transmitted over power distribution, but only within an area
defined by that distribution system. When it hits something like a transformer
the signal won't get through, so you're stuck with working within a part of the
system only.

That's why the Ethernet over power works in your house, but not beyond it.

There may be more advanced forms of the technology out there, but in not
familiar with them.

Just remember:

"All people seem to need data processing"

Or

"Please do not throw sausage pizza away"

And my personal favorite:

"Please do not touch Superman's private area"

Gary,
Let's see about those kids and pads/phones. They get on blogs and fame each
other as they've lost communication/conversation skills. And then let's look at
service outages. I live in a valley so my cell is not a home use phone. I have
cable which goes out sometimes with bad lightning storms. But...my copper wire
phone service is almost never out, even when the electricity is out, which
would also stop my modem/router from working and I think cable based phone
service.
So, while the items you mention maybe make their owners smile and feel good, I
still prefer the stuff that has a higher reliability rating, at least with me.
And yes, I prefer to speak with people, not text, email, or blog them. Just old
school I guess, but not an Amish farmer.

the lesson here is not to fall prey to the idea that things are universally
one way just because they are that way for you

a violin maker had a shop in my old neighborhood in georiga. if that's
where you grew up and always lived, it would easy to think that violin
makers were everywhere

wasn't there some plan to transmit internet along the electricity wires?
