I seem to be the odd man out here but i've always felt that the CC
system
in my '87 300D was the least surge-y of any car I've driven. Other
cars
seem to be constantly on and off the throttle when cruise is active,
even

on a level road.

No, our '86 SDL's cruise was (is?) nearly perfect in operation.
Kicks the stuffing out of our 10-year-newer pickup.

Yes, it does (at least with MB's). I only know of one engine MB USA
permitted regular unleaded in, the 3.8L M116.

Cool, I'm sure it is! The E250 BT's 0-60 time is the same as the '94
E420 I had (7.1 sec)! Waiting for the mpg reports to start coming in!
The 46mpg hwy Cruze diesel, apparently can get up into the high 50's
straight highway!

Have you had a chance to look at/test drive the new CLA? Rated 38mpg
hwy, not bad!

You don't need them for the rear springs on the W123 sedan. The fronts
 are a VERY DIFFERENT story!

 Craig

And you've got to do something with the calipers or hoses to let the
suspension down far enough to get the springs out.

Re: [MBZ] changing 123 300TD rear springs

2013-09-24 Thread MG
Very easy, no spring compressor required. I've done both sedan
and TD. The springs are under less then 1 of compression held by
the shocks with the wheels off the ground so not much pressure
there.

It's best to undo the hoses at the top of the shocks while the
car is on the ground. Make sure you cover the ends of the hoses
and the fitting on the shock to keep dirt out.

Then lift the car and disconnect the brake hoses and the outer
swaybar ends. Put a jack under the control arm, lift a couple of
inches and undo the top fastener of the shock, let the jack down
and undo the bottom of the shock and drop it out the bottom of
the arm. Remove spring.

When you put it back together the toughest part is getting the
shock to stay extended while you try to put it in from the bottom
and then while you get inside and fasten the top.

Get new rubber spring cups for the top of the spring as well as
new top shock mount kits. I used the thickest cups I could find
(19mm?). I couldn't order the exact spring type I wanted just
generic one size fits all available any more.

it is another problem to which factory is a really good answer, similar to
the question of your 140 brake discs.

people get very tunnel visioned regarding solutions. they spout some
rhetoric about the stealership and jump up and down in great delight over
how cleverly funny that expression is, missing the point that the 90s are

see what you can find out about those bilstein springs., i know they are
german made and the few people i've sold them to seem a lot happier with

(lower vapor pressure?) of the unleaded. We can't use synthetic oils in
aircraft engines due to the lead in avgas.
My eninge is low compression, 80 octane is plenty. I don't think my exhaust
valves are sodium filled, but don't know for sure. They might be.
Special approval (an STC) is required for both the engine and the airframe
to use automobile gas, which I have for this aircraft.
I truck my own fuel here, but most airports only have 100LL, so I have to
run it when going cross country. I don't see any difference between the
two, but then again, I've only been doing this for a short while.

2013-09-24 Thread mlh

i seem to recall that back in the day diesel was around the same price or
less than regular and now it is always sold as a premium.

Back in the day, cars got 8-18 mpg, and for every gallon of gasoline, you
had to get rid of x amount of diesel and y amount of propane that came in
the crude oil along with the gasoline.

Now the refineries have the ability to break down the heavy molecules to
make more gas out of a barrel of crude, so selling a gallon of diesel
means you can't make 1.x gallons of gas out of it. Fuels are being sold by
the BTU now.
(I really miss 50 cent a gallon propane and cheaper than regular diesel.)

Yes, for the sedan, you need to take the brake calipers off and hang them

[MBZ] OT: Western deserts and badlands

2013-09-24 Thread Gerry Archer

Chinese entrepreneur wins UN Global Drylands Champions award

The founder of a Chinese enterprise was honored on Monday with the Global
Drylands Champions award by a special UN body on anti-desertification.
Wang Wenbiao, chairman of the Elion Resources Group in China and also a
member of the standing committee of the National Committee of the Chinese
People's Political Consultative Conference, has spent the last 25 years in
combating desertification in the Kubuqi Desert.

Wang received the award at a gala dinner party held on the sidelines of the
ongoing 11th Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the UN Convention to
Combat Desertification (UNCCD), which opened here on Sept. 16.

The Global Drylands Champions award is a UNCCD initiative that recognizes
individuals who have made significant contributions to the UNCCD process and
leadership in sustainable land management, especially in the drylands.
At the awarding ceremony, Wang said his Elion Resources Group has turned
more than 5,000 square km of the Kubuqi Desert into green lands.
He stressed that only through the joint efforts of the government,
businesses, individuals and the civil society, can the arduous task of
combating desertification be achieved successfully.

I suspect it's a T-tail of some sort (DC-9, VC-10, or whatever
Illiushin made to copy the VC-10) with engines added to the wings by
computer.

No one ever built anything like that, the T-tail configuration has
been around for quite a while, starting with the Caravel in the early
50's, but it's only really useful if you want a very high lift wing
configuration (Boeing 727, specifically) where you need huge leading
edge slats and amazingly large trailing flaps. Engines on the wing
interfere with the airflow.

For six (or ten) engines, just hang them on the wing is, I suspect,
easier. See the history of the B-36 for an example.

The extra engines you are seeing at the aft tail is an optical illusion

Hard to call it accurately due to the stealth paint job... no markings..

That's the way I'm seeing it... general profile fits in both the frontal
pic and the side view...
